Another version of the story in Chapter 27

Back at the hospital, Pidan and her mother had already been brought there.

Gao He leaned close to my ear and said, "We've told the mother and daughter about the 'pregnancy,' and we've also spread the news among the neighbors. But we've only said it's to help us with our 'fishing' operation, and we'll help them clarify things later. As for whether the 'child' is yours or... yours! Hehe, you can go tell her yourself." He winked at me mischievously as he spoke.

This was the first time Pidan and I had met since the car accident. Pidan tilted his head and looked at the corner of my mouth: "It's still bandaged? Is it serious?"

I nodded, indicating that I couldn't speak, took out my phone, quickly typed a line of text, and held it up in front of her.

Pidan's eyebrows immediately stood up.

I shrugged at her and made a helpless gesture.

Pidan glared at Gao He resentfully.

The mother and daughter had just been taken away when, before I could put my phone away, Gao He snatched it away and whispered:

"Don't be afraid. We only brought you here to protect you... Captain Gao arranged for me to be the father of your child, to frame Jiangdong. I am now the real target of the murderer."

Gao He chuckled and handed the phone back to me: "You little rascal, you're really cunning."

Her smile vanished, and she asked me in a low voice, "Are you serious?"

I simply typed on my phone: "Of course it's fake. Sun Jing may be a pervert, but if he were really a bold person, he wouldn't have run away after the car accident. He would have killed me first and then attacked this mother and daughter."

Gao He nodded. "Just like someone who pretends to be drunk. However, I don't think he has mental problems. Otherwise, he wouldn't have been hiding behind the scenes and using Tong Liru to commit the crime."

When we returned to the monitoring room, there were about a dozen security guards gathered there.

Gao said to me in a low voice, "I had all the security guards gathered here. You might think that handling two cases at the same time will cause chaos. But neither case can be delayed, so this is the only option."

Seeing that he kept glancing at me, I turned around and walked out.

The monkey caught up and said, "I have a feeling that we've been tricked by that guy surnamed Gao again."

I said, "It's my own choice. Otherwise, Pidan and his mother would have to live in fear every day. When would that ever end?"

The monkey suddenly sighed: "You've still fallen for that little egg girl?"

I didn't say anything, just walked around the outpatient building with my hands behind my back, occasionally glancing up at the surveillance cameras in the corner above.

After passing through the annex corridor and taking the stairs to the eighth floor of the inpatient building, I took the elevator down to the sixth floor. As soon as the door opened, Gao He walked in with a smile, surrounded by several patients.

The elevator stopped on the first basement level. The three of them first circled the parking lot, and then arrived at a special underground building.

Looking at the blue sign with white lettering that read "Morgue," the monkey couldn't help but say:
"It is said that the morgue is connected to the gates of hell. Before the body is sent in, the spirit of the dead still lingers nearby. When it is pushed out, it is truly just a stinking carcass."

Gao patted my arm, gesturing for me to follow him to a nearby parking space with a 'No Parking' sign.

"This is where Bian Xiaomao saw the dog eating the corpse. However, my colleagues did not collect any human tissue or blood traces in the vicinity."

I said, "Brother Gao, to be honest, I'm still a student who got expelled, not some great detective. I don't have the ability to help you guys."

Gao He said, "Don't underestimate yourself. Besides, I didn't expect you to help me with anything. Didn't I say before that children's eyes are clearer than adults'?"

The monkey mumbled something, which neither Gao nor I could hear clearly, but from his lip movements, I knew he was saying 'shameless'.

I hesitated for a moment, then asked Gao He, "Did Bian Xiaomao only say what he said before?"

Gao He nodded: "What I told you is all there is to it. It's not that I didn't have my doubts, but after questioning him repeatedly, his story was consistent, and I couldn't force him to confess, right?"

I was the one who started this whole thing, so I definitely couldn't leave. The monkey, being a loyal friend, stayed too.

Of course, for him, besides genuinely caring about me, there was also a considerable element of curiosity.

Gao and others arranged for us to stay in a temporary caregiver's rest room and sent someone to buy us some basic toiletries.

Gao He closed the door, opened a window, lit a cigarette, and said, "Sanqi, what do you think about the 'dogs eating corpses' incident?"

Without thinking, I said, "Bian Xiaomao is lying."

Gao He's eyelids drooped: "You think he orchestrated everything? That he stole the woman's corpse?"

I said, "It's not that bad. But he definitely wasn't telling the truth. If you ask me, most of what he said was true, but he concealed another part, and that small part is the key."

Gao He's eyes lit up: "Tell me about it. Oh, don't worry, our people have already placed the entire hospital under close surveillance, centered around Pi Dan's ward. As long as Sun Jing dares to come, he definitely won't be able to escape."

I looked at the sky through the window, subconsciously shook my head, but said aloud:
"I heard a ghost story about a hospital. Would you like to hear it?"

……

It's also a fairly large hospital, and the protagonist is also a security guard on the night shift named Da Mao.

That night, when Da Mao was making his rounds, he encountered a female patient in the corridor who asked him for a light.

Da Mao looked her up and down and asked, "Which floor are you on? Why aren't you asleep at this hour?"

As he spoke, he lit a cigarette for her and then lit one for himself. The female patient seemed like a heavy smoker; she wasn't particularly talkative, but she would always reply with a sentence or two for every three questions Da Mao asked. She mentioned which floor she lived on, her room number…

After finishing his cigarette, before continuing his patrol, Da Mao winked at her and said, "Go back to sleep now. If... you still can't sleep, come back here and I'll chat with you."

After Da Mao finished his rounds on the eighth floor, he was taking the elevator down when the elevator doors suddenly opened, and the female patient walked in.

Da Mao, who had been complaining, suddenly perked up.

He was already a bachelor, well into his forties and still single, so women held a great attraction for him. Moreover, this female patient was tall and had a very attractive appearance and figure.

Seeing that the woman didn't press the elevator button, Da Mao had a sudden inspiration. He deliberately turned to the side and looked at the woman, "Still can't sleep? Sigh, that's true. The hospital isn't your home. I'm still in bed."

As they were talking, the elevator had already reached the basement level.

Da Mao stepped out of the elevator first and called to the woman, "Smoking up here will easily get you caught by the night patrol doctor, and he'll definitely scold you. Come with me, I know where the 'hidden' spot is."

Da Mao had worked at this hospital for nearly six years, so he was naturally familiar with the place and led the woman to a 'private corner to relax'.

He took out his cigarette case, intending to offer it to the woman, but she handed him a women's cigarette first.

The two lit cigarettes and took a few puffs before Da Mao moved closer to the woman.

The woman kept smiling and did not resist, but when Da Mao mustered up his courage and put his arm around her waist, the woman suddenly lowered her head.

Da Mao subconsciously looked down to check, and upon seeing what he saw, he was terrified.

He noticed that the woman was not only barefoot, but also had a tag attached to her toes that indicated her 'special identity'.

The tag clearly shows the number – 000736!

……

At this point, I covered my mouth and took two deep breaths.

Gao He raised an eyebrow at me: "How do you know Bian Xiaomao is over forty? And that he's still single?"

Then, answering his own question, his eyes seemed somewhat bewildered: "I understand. You've seen those security guards, recognized who Bian Xiaomao is, and seen his situation. But... but are there really such extraordinary people in the world who can see so much with just one glance?"

I chuckled dryly: "I did guess who Bian Xiaomao was, but I'm no extraordinary person."

I turned to the monkey and said, "That guy's defining characteristic is his sleazy nature, he's incredibly sleazy!"

The monkey let out a strange cry: "It's the one on the far left, the one that's desperately trying to shrink back! Damn, with that rat-like face, it's no wonder he can't find a wife."

Gao He chuckled: "Young people's imaginations are indeed rich, but the fact remains that the body is missing. I've spoken with Bian Xiaomao face-to-face more than once, and he is indeed a bit of a scoundrel, but he is still a man. Regarding these details, I believe your deduction, but it's not very realistic to expect him to admit it. Personally, I don't think it's necessary, otherwise, how would he ever be able to face the world?"

The monkey asked, "So you believe what he said, that the woman's corpse was really eaten by the dog?"

Gao He immediately said, "He believes that he really saw an identical wolfhound that night."

He stood up and rubbed his hands together. I thought he was going to leave, but instead he walked to a four-poster bed and lay down. "Oh dear, I'm getting old, I don't have the energy anymore. I need to sleep for a while, otherwise I won't be able to work tonight."

I said, "You two should get some sleep too. Don't you want to know how someone can get lost in a parking lot? Hey, Sanqi, stop worrying. This isn't a movie shoot; don't worry about the killer disguising themselves as a doctor or nurse and sneaking into Pidan's hospital room."

I was initially feeling a bit lost, but after hearing what he said, my heart skipped a beat.

It was at this moment that I suddenly felt as if a pair of eyes were secretly watching me.

Following my instincts, I turned around abruptly, only to see a clump of green bamboo swaying gently in the evening breeze outside the window…

That night, I was half asleep when I was suddenly awakened by two knocks on the door.

As soon as the door opened, Gao He walked in, winking and saying, "It's time. Want to go on patrol together?"

I rolled over and mumbled, "Boring, not going..."

Gao He whispered again, "Zhao Wenqiang, hey, Zhao Wenqiang, are you going or not?"

I heard the sound of someone getting up from the bed opposite mine, followed by light footsteps, and I sighed inwardly.

Monkey King, you've finally been tricked by that guy surnamed Gao.

Given a monkey's nature, it would certainly be unable to resist its curiosity.

After he left with Gao He, I kept my eyes open the whole time.

"Buzzing..."

The phone vibrated, and I grabbed it, jumped out of bed, got dressed, opened the door, and went outside.

The lounge was located in a corner on the first floor of the annex. I slowly walked around to the outpatient building at the front, walked all over the building, and then returned to the corridor of the annex.

Just as I was about to walk down the corridor and reach the inpatient building, a sinister voice suddenly came from behind me: "Do you have a lighter?"
