Chapter 13 The Hunt for the Killer
Chapter 13 The Hunt for the Killer (Part 1)
A disfigured face was pasted tightly against the glass door of the clinic.
Those that can appear in broad daylight are certainly not fox spirits.
It was a person, but I mistook it for a fox at first glance because of its eyes.
Those eyes curved downwards, narrowing into two crescent moons, but the glimpses of pupils revealed a cunning glint.
Combined with other facial features that are distorted and deformed due to compression, at first glance it really does look like a fox's face!
The monkey behind me raised its voice and said, "What are you staring at? Trying to scare me to death? Hurry up and come in!"
The man outside grinned and pushed the door open, walking in.
That's when I realized that the other person was actually a very good-looking girl.
The girl's eyes were actually quite large, but they were naturally smiling eyes. Her eyes were not as clear as autumn water, but more like shining stars, revealing a mischievous and clever nature.
The monkey clearly recognized her. As soon as she entered, the monkey turned around and rummaged through the medicine shelf: "I figured you should come to pick up your medicine in the next couple of days. So, have you been to your follow-up appointment recently?"
"Stop talking so much nonsense, keep a close eye on me, don't give me the wrong medicine!" the girl said rudely, her cunning, fox-like eyes darting over me.
I don't know what got into me, but I just extended my right hand to her and said, "Hello, my name is Sanqi."
The girl paused for a moment, blinked twice, and then actually reached out and shook my hand:
"Hello, my math teacher is the PE teacher, and his cheating ex-wife happens to be my math teacher. So my math PE teacher taught me: Anyone who dares to give me a math problem, I'll make them pay!"
I withdrew my hand, folded it over my body and hung it down in front of me. "My name is really Sanqi. My grandfather sold wild herbs, and Sanqi is a medicinal herb. I was picked up by my grandfather, and he wouldn't let me take his surname."
The girl stared at me for a while, then suddenly her eyes darted downwards, startling me so much that I jumped back.
The girl burst into laughter, then turned to the monkey and said with a smile, "Dr. Zhao, is this your friend? Did he just move in? He looks like a complete idiot to me!"
The monkey chuckled, "Don't tease him. He's in the same profession as me, a junior from school, and we're neighbors. You never know when you might need his help."
The girl looked at me with surprise: "You're a doctor too? You don't look that age."
"I'm still a year away from graduating. I... I'm studying veterinary medicine."
"Hey! You look pretty honest, why are you swearing like that?"
I quickly said, "No, no, my major is veterinary medicine." As I spoke, I secretly pointed at the monkey, indicating that someone else was cursing.
The girl glared at me again, took the medicine from the monkey, said "put it on the tab," and turned to leave.
I was still in a daze until she walked out the door and disappeared from sight.
"Sanqi, you've never been in a relationship before, have you?" Monkey asked me.
"Not really."
I told you that when I first started working at the Sichuan restaurant, one of the waitresses seemed to have a thing for me. But when it comes to romantic relationships, if there's no spark, even glue won't work. Luckily, nothing came of it, because I later heard from someone that she had been having an affair with a fat chef in the kitchen all along.
The monkey nodded and said, "That's right. Just by looking into your eyes, I can tell you've taken a liking to her."
I didn't argue. I swear, before this, I absolutely believed that "love at first sight" should be changed to "love at first sight for life," and even then, it had to be a perfect match, because the "results" had to be mutually compatible. But it seems that the girl I just met has completely changed my understanding of this term.
I asked the monkey, "Brother Monkey, does this 'Preserved Egg' (a common term for naughty children in my hometown, besides 'Preserved Egg,' there's also 'Mischievous Monkey') live nearby? What's her name?"
The monkey's eyes lit up for no apparent reason: "You could even tell that?"
I was taken aback. "What do you mean?"
"That girl's name is Pidan. Her surname is Pei, and her given name is... I really can't remember it right now. She was more mischievous than any boy when she was little, so all the neighbors called her Pidan."
The monkey sighed for no apparent reason. "It's understandable for young people to have feelings for each other, but you'd better not get your hands on Pidan." "Why? Does she have a boyfriend?"
The monkey shook its head, opened the drawer, pulled out a medicine slip, and handed it to me.
Although I studied veterinary medicine, I still have some knowledge of pharmaceuticals. After glancing at them, my heart sank: "Why are they all hormones?"
“Cancer.” Monkey sighed again. “It was already in its late stages when it was discovered. My colleagues said she only had six months to live at most. But this rascal… slapped those doctors and experts in the face. Ha, it’s been a year and a half since the doctors gave that prediction.”
The monkey earnestly advised me, "I can tell you're a sentimental person, which is why I told you not to provoke her. Otherwise, you'll suffer along with the living. Let her continue being so carefree and live as long as she wants, that's fine."
Back at the rented apartment, the first thing I did was put my phone on ring and set an alarm. This was to prevent myself from falling into a deep sleep again. If I missed the time again, I really would have to go to a major hospital for a checkup.
The white fox from that night never reappeared in the following days.
I wasn't in a rush to find a job. I believed that Gao and his team would soon catch the serial killer based on the clues I provided. I could make plans when I got back to school.
That morning, I was killing time at Monkey's clinic when Gao called.
On the phone, he excitedly told me that they had apprehended the suspect just two hours earlier. He urged me to go to the city police station as soon as possible.
After hanging up the phone, I immediately drove over (being strapped for cash doesn't mean I'm not planning ahead; I tightened my belt and got my driver's license in my second year of university, which is why Liping left his Jetta to me).
After explaining my purpose, I was led to a small conference room.
It wasn't until 2 p.m. that Gao He slowly walked in.
"Sorry, we've been interrogating you the whole time."
I said, "It's okay, has the murderer confessed?"
"I admit it," Gao He said, but his expression was not good.
I didn't ask him for details, I just said, "Can you get me a certificate now?"
Gao He lit a cigarette, pushed the cigarette pack and lighter in front of me, and said while blowing smoke rings:
“Theoretically, it’s fine, but… before that, I want you to meet with the suspect.”
I was taken aback: "Why would I want to see him?"
Gao He took a deep drag on his cigarette. "It's just routine. You've had close contact with the killer, so even if you didn't see their face, you should have a general impression of them."
His statement meant that I had no room to refuse.
In the interrogation room, a man with a stubble-covered face and a bandage over his left eye was strapped to an interrogation chair. When he heard any noise, he merely raised his right eye to glance at the man before lowering his head again.
I looked him over carefully and found that although he was somewhat listless and unkempt, apart from his natural beard, he was actually a rather refined middle-aged man.
I was still looking at him when suddenly I heard him say coldly, "You're the one who hurt my eye?"
The other person didn't even look up when they spoke, but it was clearly directed at me.
Although I was startled, my gaze remained fixed on him.
After a while, I turned around, looked up at Gao He, and shook my head.
Gao He's eyes sharpened as he glanced at the suspect and asked me, "Isn't he the murderer you saw that night?"
I hesitated for a long time, then gritted my teeth and said, "It shouldn't be."
As soon as he finished speaking, the suspect suddenly raised his head and stared intently at me with his one eye.
