"Do you need help?"
A soft voice suddenly rang in his ears, and Humphrey looked up sharply. On the stairwell outside the door, a burly figure was slowly walking towards him.
The figure was ridiculously large; the black cloak was stretched taut by the bear-like body, almost completely blocking the entire stairwell.
"Who are you?!" Humphrey exclaimed, but he was still pushing hard at the corpse stuck in the door crack.
Perhaps the god of light heard his inner prayer, for the snarling baron actually pushed the corpse out of the crack in the door.
He immediately ran back behind the door and tried to push the heavy iron door shut, but the next second, an arm with festering skin and only bone left suddenly grabbed the edge of the door from the outside.
Then came the second hand, the third hand...
Countless rotting hands gripped the edge of the door, forcefully pushing the heavy iron door open along with Baron Humphrey's body.
Humphrey stumbled and fell to the ground, his eyes filled with fear.
Because he saw those withered arms, all of which were extending from under the cloak of that burly figure.
"Monster...monster!!!" the Baron cried out in terror, shuffling backward along the floor.
"Monster?" The enormous figure bent slightly and squeezed into the doorway, which seemed rather low to him. Countless skeletal arms covered in rotting flesh extended from beneath the black robe like blooming chrysanthemums. "Which one of these do you think is a monster?"
“Lelph? Boken? Wood? Jack?…” The massive figure slowly approached the despairing Humphrey, placing a dozen arms on his trembling shoulders. “Don’t be nervous, Baron.”
“Come, take a closer look at those bodies that you have whipped.”
"Why can't you keep a proper eye on things even at this point?"
Several withered, bony hands gripped Humphrey's dazed face, sharp fingers waving in front of his wide-open eyes.
"Still can't see clearly? With those noble eyes of yours, can't you see anything even now?"
"Then what's the point of keeping it?"
"Ah ...
He trembled and fell to the ground, groping in the darkness as he tried to escape.
But it was no use. A tremendous force pierced through his back chest. He tried to scream, but the leaking air in his lungs prevented him from making a complete sound.
"So noble, yet after death he's just a pile of mud."
The burly figure retracted his densely packed bony arms, and his face, hidden under the hood, slightly raised. Suddenly, his gaze shifted, and he saw a man in a travel cloak standing at the door, and a girl with long pink and white hair riding on his shoulders.
There were several deep red teeth marks on the man's face and collarbone, clearly the work of the girl who was still riding on his shoulders and biting his head.
"Ah... I didn't expect this to be a couples' suite. Sorry to disturb your time together." Ye Xiao scratched his head sheepishly upon seeing the bloody scene inside. "I'll leave now."
Chapter Thirteen: Templar Knights and Necromancers
"Eunice...did she bring you here?"
The deep voice echoed from the massive figure inside the room, yet remained as calm as ever, showing none of the madness one would have displayed after killing the Baron.
"I guess so, but for safety's sake, I had it wait outside." Ye Xiao shrugged. "You want to see her?"
"No." Besolini extended a skeletal arm from under his cloak, pulled a knife from the desk, and gently stroked the blade with his other skeletal hand. "Let's... end it here."
"I have no reason to fight you." Ye Xiao shook his head. "I'm not familiar with the person on the ground either."
“There are hundreds of undead souls inside my body, and my suppression of them is almost at its limit.” Besolini’s voice remained calm. “Next, this body will be guided by the undead to Gray Gold Town. After killing the people of Gray Gold Town, it may go to Liangqiu Village, or it may go directly to the Imperial City.”
"So, you want me to settle things with you here."
“I’m just telling you what I’m going to do.” Besolini’s massive frame approached the doorway. “What you do is your choice.”
"Perhaps I have a way to save you?" Ye Xiao was also planning to try Ella's version of the healing holy light.
He didn't actually have much ill feelings towards this dull necromancer.
"Living... is no longer salvation for me."
"Alright." Ye Xiao took Greta off his head. "Be good, my maid, at least let me look like a human being when we're going through the story."
"Hmph!" The little maid stood aside, dissatisfied.
"Do you need to get it bandaged first?" Besolini asked in a friendly manner.
"It's just a superficial wound, nothing serious." Ye Xiao wiped the few drops of blood from his forehead with his right hand and pulled out the staff from his back with his left.
It has to be said that Greta's bites when she's angry are actually quite painful.
"Brother, if you're determined to die, could you do me a favor and just surrender?"
“I want to too.” Countless hands bloomed like lotus flowers from beneath the black cloak, and Besolini’s deep voice became somewhat weak, “But I can’t.”
As soon as he finished speaking, countless skeletal arms, like a volley of gunfire, instantly covered the narrow doorway. At the same moment, Ye Xiao threw his staff into the doorway.
The spatial fluctuations vanished in an instant. Ye Xiao, who had been teleported into the house using his staff, dodged the barrage of skeletal arms. He gripped the hilt of his sword with his right hand and drew his longsword with a fierce motion.
The menacing blade slashed at Besolini's bear-like back, tearing through his cloak but being stopped by the hard bone armor beneath the fabric.
Several skeletal arms tore through the cloak behind him and reached for Ye Xiao. He flicked the tip of his knife and somersaulted back to the desk behind him, barely avoiding the waving sharp bone claws.
Bersolini's black cloak fell away, revealing a bloody and grotesque body.
It looked like a dozen rotting corpses stitched together, their twisted forms intertwined to form this massive shell.
The protruding limbs swam in a sea of rotting flesh, with several pale heads surrounding them opening and closing their jaws, spewing out thin mists of blood.
"The biotechnology of this world is always eye-opening." Ye Xiao marveled at the other party's strange physiological structure, and slightly raised the hand holding the staff, "Fireball."
Dazzling fireworks exploded in the not-so-spacious room, and the raging fire spread, but it did not leave many marks on the huge body.
Enveloped in firelight and smoke, Besolini manipulated the skulls on his body to open their mouths, spewing out thick green smoke to dispel the flames.
But just as the flames dissipated, the blade, wreathed in golden light, pierced through the thick smoke and struck the cluster of outward-extending bone arms.
Besolini's eyes, hidden beneath his hood, widened slightly, and his massive body retreated for the first time, stepping onto the stairwell outside the door.
Several skeletal arms, scorched by holy light, fell to the ground, whereupon a travel boot crushed them into ashes. The baron's sword held by one of the skeletal hands also fell to the ground with a thud.
Ye Xiao, gripping a long sword enveloped in golden light and clad in armor shrouded in holy light, slowly emerged from the house.
“A Templar Knight…?” Besolini was somewhat surprised. With his rich experience, he had already noticed the other party’s extraordinary skills upon their first meeting; otherwise, he would not have asked the other party to execute him.
But he really found it hard to associate the frivolous-looking, casually dressed man in front of him with the solemn and dignified Templar Knight.
Of course, Ye Xiao didn't actually pursue the Templar's legacy. He barely had time to practice the Assassin's legacy that Artoria gave him, so naturally he wouldn't have time to learn Templar's skills.
The swordsmanship and skills of the Templars that he possessed were all learned by Ella during the High Priest Evans's quest to recall the Battle of Bards in the Windwind Valley.
Although his lack of high affinity with holy attributes limits his power, his skills inherited from the Extraordinary Templars are incredibly effective against the undead type Besolini.
Ye Xiao pushed off the ground and instantly appeared, unleashing a golden arc with a sword enchanted with holy light.
In the narrow corridor, Besolini's massive body became a hindrance, and he could only use the hastily summoned bone shield spell to block the slashes.
But the thin shield was easily pierced by this one slash. As the blade pierced into the massive body from top to bottom, the scorching blade burned the rotting flesh and emitted thick black smoke.
The heads attached to it all emitted painful howls, which echoed in the empty stairwell, making one's eardrums ache.
“It seems… we didn’t choose the wrong person…” Despite the immense pain coursing through his body, Besolini only let out a soft sigh, like the murmur of a dying man.
Ye Xiao pulled out the blade and shook off the rotten flesh that had been burned to ashes and was stuck to it.
He gently raised the tip of his knife, aiming it at Besolini's gaunt and broken face beneath his hood. "Rest in peace, old man..."
Before he could finish speaking, a thick black mist suddenly burst forth from the body that was contracting in pain before his eyes.
The dark mist that rushed towards him quickly corroded the holy light armor that wrapped around Ye Xiao, and even the glowing blade was covered in dark black spots.
Ye Xiao quickly retreated, and when he looked at the knife in his hand, he saw that it was covered with black spots that looked like mold.
With just a gentle flick, several iron filings fell off the blade.
"...I can't hold it in any longer...I'm leaving it to you..."
Besolini's whisper drifted out from the black mist, sending chills down Ye Xiao's spine.
"No, please hang in there a little longer!"
No one responded to Ye Xiao's calls from the black mist that filled the corridor. Countless hideous faces materialized on the surging black mist, emitting a continuous stream of piercing screams.
Enveloped in layers of black mist in the confined space, Besolini found it difficult to get close, and even the Holy Light Armor could not withstand the intense corrosion.
Ye Xiao tried to bombard the black mist with fireballs, but in the narrow corridor, the black mist was only briefly exposed by the impact of the firelight, before it immediately churned and gathered back.
At this rate, there's absolutely no way to get close to Besolini, who's shrouded in black mist. Spells can't break through it, and any blades that try to cut in will be easily corroded.
He needed an open area where the black fog could not quickly gather after it dispersed.
Ye Xiao pondered for a moment, then dropped the rotten knife in his hand and retreated to the doorway of the room, facing the black mist.
Just as the black mist that filled the corridor was about to engulf the windows, Ye Xiao released his staff with his left hand and stomped hard on the baron's sword that had fallen at the doorway.
The exquisite noble longsword sprang up from the ground. Ye Xiao grabbed the hilt with one hand and kicked the end of the falling staff with the other. The staff pierced the air with a whoosh and flew straight out of the window.
Then, he abruptly pulled Greta, who was yawning against the door frame, and with a shout of "Shifting Shadows," the two vanished into thin air.
The next second, the surging black mist completely covered the entire corridor.
Chapter Fourteen Last Wish
"Whoa, what are you doing?!" Greta cried out as she plummeted through the chaotic wind outside the tower.
"Let's find a more open battlefield." Ye Xiao said, releasing the little maid's slender arm and grabbing the staff that was falling with her, then firing a fireball upwards.
At the same time, the enormous body inside the staircase, enveloped in black miasma, burst out of the window, only to be met head-on by a flying fireball.
A blinding burst of light erupted, and the thick black fog in the clear high sky finally dissipated, revealing the enormous body that had been covered by its layers.
Bersolini thrust his pale, bony arm, which had been protruding from his body, into the outer wall of the tower and charged toward Ye Xiao below, causing his tattered black cloak to flutter like a spider wearing a scarf.
The massive, surging figure quickly caught up with Ye Xiao, who was falling freely. The white, skeletal arms, shrouded in black mist, shifted and merged into a pale, giant scythe, which slashed down fiercely.
Just before the opponent got close, Ye Xiao threw his staff at the tower wall. The staff, which should have fallen down with the tower, bounced off the wall and flew in an arc to the top of Besolini's head.
He immediately grabbed Greta's arm and disappeared into the air just as the giant scythe of bones was about to strike.
The scythe cleaved through the rocky outer wall, accompanied by a shower of sand and gravel. Ye Xiao, having once again used the teleportation technique, had already appeared halfway above Besolini, holding the little maid.
The black mist, dispersed by the fireball in the open sky, hadn't even had time to regroup. Seizing this fleeting opportunity to get close, Ye Xiao gripped his longsword, infused it with holy light, and delivered a powerful vertical slash.
The golden blade pierced through Besolini's emaciated head, slicing through his decaying body below as well.
The dozen or so grotesque skulls on it emitted a piercing howl once more, but this time, it was a mournful cry that was about to dissipate.
Watching the massive body, scorched by the holy light, fall helplessly, Ye Xiao tossed the little maid he was holding onto his back, gripped his knife with both hands, and plunged it into the tower wall to stop his descent.
The sharp blade sliced through the stone bricks, drawing a vertical line downwards on the outer wall of the tower.
……
After finally stopping his fall, Ye Xiao first used the teleportation technique to retrieve the staff that had landed earlier, and then searched for Besolini's figure at the bottom of the iron tower and stone brick building of the refinery.
It didn't take long before he saw Besolini's enormous figure beside a pool of molten iron glowing red-hot.
"Luckily, he didn't fall into that pool." Having found Besolini, Ye Xiao put the little maid who had been punching him back on the ground from behind, and slowly approached Besolini lying on the ground with his knife in hand.
"..." Besolini, who was lying on the ground on the verge of death, noticed Ye Xiao approaching, but remained silent.
Ye Xiao casually tossed the baron's longsword into the molten iron pool beside him; he didn't want to be mistaken for the baron's murderer because of it.
"He's about to die, can't you even offer some profound advice?"
"Sigh..." Besolini's muscular body gradually withered like a deflated balloon, wisps of black smoke rising from him and dissipating into the air. "...I overestimated myself...In the end, I couldn't hold back..."
"You inscribed runes on your body, dismantled it, and placed it around the Gray Gold Mine to appease the souls of the dead who were being suppressed there?"
After digging out the severed arm, Ye Xiao asked Greta about the meaning of the incantation on the bandage wrapped around her arm before tracing the next source of the scent.
The maid, skilled in necromancy, gave the answer without much hesitation—a spell to appease and suppress the spirits of the dead.
Later, Ye Xiao learned Besolini's real name from Eunice, and that this guy was once a necromancer wanted by the Human Federation.
Greta said that, generally speaking, the souls of the dead in this world do not linger in any one place, but rather dissipate naturally over time. Unless, of course, they possess some kind of strong will.
The continuous gathering of the dead will be like a bomb that is constantly being loaded with gunpowder, which will eventually lead to a terrifying outcome.
Perhaps Besolini realized that too many wronged souls lingering here would eventually cause disaster, or perhaps Besolini knew those poor miners and didn't want them to wander in suffering forever.
It's also possible that this infamous necromancer simply tried to create something from these wandering undead, but failed because he couldn't control or suppress them.
