"Don't be too nervous, junior. We just want to get to know this female classmate from out of town."
The senior students blocking the road smiled and turned their gaze to Greta, who was petite, in the crowd.
But perhaps it was Greta's doll-like cuteness that was truly stunning, for the leading male student's gaze suddenly froze when he saw her.
"...Ahem, hey, anyway, someone wants to talk to her. This is none of your business, so I advise you not to meddle."
"Ignore him, Greta. Let's go. There are so many students watching us. What can they do if they can't take us down?"
The female classmate next to Greta grabbed her arm and tried to pull her away.
"Hey, hey."
The unfamiliar student next to them immediately blocked their way with his tall and strong physique, saying, "You say you're watching, but who's watching?"
As soon as he finished speaking, his gaze swept across the area, and the students passing by all turned their heads away, even deliberately avoiding the group's location, as if a vacuum had appeared in the not-so-wide passageway.
This wasn't magic; it was simply human nature. These senior students were clearly nobles, and ordinary students wouldn't dare provoke them. They would simply ignore it, let alone report it to the academic affairs office.
"You...you're going too far."
Seeing this, the female trainee also became a little nervous.
Although they were nobles, there were also classes among nobles. While a purely free person might be fearless and have nothing to lose, they were still part of the noble circle. It always took immense courage for them to offend other high-ranking nobles who could potentially affect their families for the sake of a newly arrived classmate from out of town.
"Hey, you can't just say things like that. How did you 'deceive' me?"
The leader of the group smirked, "We just wanted to chat. Is it really okay for you to slander us like this?"
"you……"
"It's alright, Delilah, I'll go with them and take a look."
Greta remained carefree and cheerful, saying, "I'll be there soon. Remember to save me a seat at the restaurant."
"Greta, you don't know, they want to..."
When the classmate named Delilah saw that Greta seemed unaware of what was happening, she quickly spoke up to remind her.
"I know, they just want to bully me."
The girl's face lit up with a bright smile. "Isn't this quite interesting?"
"No, they're going to... eh?"
Delilah was stunned for a moment, unable to immediately grasp the logical relationship between the content of Greta's words and her tone.
"Ahem! Don't talk nonsense. We didn't bully anyone or anything. We were just exchanging magic. Everyone follows the school rules."
The senior student was somewhat surprised by Greta's excited expression, but in any case, he certainly couldn't give her any ammunition.
After that, the students in Class Two could only watch as Greta was surrounded by this group of older students and led to a side path.
Even if these senior students are foolish, they certainly wouldn't make a move in a crowded and inconvenient place.
A secluded path led to a corner of the academy, seemingly an open space next to a warehouse, where several students from Class One were already waiting.
As a young lady from a ducal family, Illyas naturally couldn't personally appear in such matters and leave any leverage for others. Only a few followers were there, responsible for recording their "victories".
The one leading them was none other than the Marquis Favina. Because of the death of the precious monster snake, she had been severely reprimanded by her father when she returned home, and she was still in a bad mood.
"Oh, so there's a deserted place hidden next to the training ground."
Surrounded by unfamiliar students with ill intentions, Greta remained as curious as a tourist, hunching her shoulders and looking around with wide eyes.
"You don't seem to realize your own predicament?"
The noble students in Class One were furious when they saw Greta's appearance. Some of them had been hit with ice spells by her in the previous class, and in this class, she used the guise of magic practice to electrocute them.
And then there's her annoying professor brother from out of town, who's quite an eyesore.
"Oh, these are the students from Class One. So you're the ones who want to have a chat with me."
Greta covered her mouth and chuckled, "Now that I've graced you with my presence, shouldn't you show some sincerity as well?"
"you……!?"
Favina hadn't expected this guy to be so arrogant, and her face immediately turned a deep purplish-red. She casually pointed at the tall, muscular male student next to her and said, "What are you standing there for? Hurry up and teach her a lesson!"
"You like to laugh, but I'll ruin that stinky face of yours today!"
As they were talking, a fellow trainee pulled out a rope and several bottles of medicine from his pocket.
"Forehead……?"
Now it was the senior student who had brought the person who suddenly hesitated, "Was it really necessary to go this far? Shouldn't a little lesson have been enough?"
While they might bully others, even noble children wouldn't dare to go too far in some of their transgressions.
Using alchemical reagents to disfigure someone right off the bat is already a crime.
Chapter Thirty-Three: Self-Inflicted Misfortune
"Are you an idiot? We said we asked her to help move the reagents, and she accidentally dropped them, so that's all that matters!"
Favina shouted angrily, "With so many witnesses here, are you afraid the registrar's office will punish you?"
Marquis is already a very high-ranking noble in the empire. With such a family background, even though Favina is only a first-year student, she can order older students around as if they were slaves.
Loren rarely saw such situations. Although there was a noble class, it was not uncommon for counts with their own fiefdoms to disrespect the dukes of their respective provinces in certain matters, let alone being bossed around like this.
But Aslan was different; the ultimate point of all national loyalty and pride was the royal family, or more accurately, that bloodline.
In other words, all the population, land, and property within the empire ultimately belong to the Aslan royal family, and the layers of official positions that follow the bloodline purity system are merely administrative ranks.
This also means that even if an earl maintains an army on land granted to him by the royal family, a marquis, who is one level above him, can transfer the army at any time if he wants.
Of course, this is a simplified situation. If this were to be done, the reasons would certainly need to be explained to the inspectors and the Aslan royal family. But this also illustrates, to some extent, the near-complete dominance of each level of officialdom over their subordinates in Aslan.
In Loren, fiefdoms belong to the nobles themselves, and a marquis has to issue a warrant to "request" an earl's troops. There are even instances where lower-ranking nobles unite to attack upper-ranking nobles due to differing political views, such as the civil war initiated by the Duke of York attacking the capital a few months ago. This would be almost impossible in Aslan.
The relationships among noble offspring are a microcosm of the political system, and the Aslan students' belief in this concept clearly stems from their parents.
Therefore, even though the senior male student was extremely unwilling, he still gritted his teeth and accepted the alchemical reagent.
Even as he walked up to Greta, the pink-haired girl stood rooted to the spot with her big, watery eyes, not needing any help from the other students to hold her down. She didn't even seem to want to move away.
Looking at the petite and adorable girl's delicate appearance, the male trainee felt even more reluctant to let her go.
But the resentful urging from behind grew louder and louder, "What are you still standing there for!?"
The snake bite scar on Favina's nose was still throbbing, and she felt an increasing loathing for the pink-haired girl in her eyes.
"You're out of luck, girl from out of town. You shouldn't be so arrogant."
The male student finally pulled out the cork, and with a heavy heart, splashed the reagent out of his hand.
"what!!!!!!"
The next moment, a scream ripped through the sky, and the girl covered her face with her hands and fell to the ground.
The power of acidic reagents should not be underestimated; like boiling oil over a raging fire, it instantly caused large patches of oil blisters to appear on that beautiful face.
"It's so noisy, tell her to shut up."
The new order came down, but the male trainee felt that the voice seemed to have become a little childish.
But the trembling in his heart caused by splashing the reagent made him disregard everything else. He had already done the most ruthless thing, as if he had crossed the line, and nothing else mattered anymore.
He kicked the girl in the stomach, and her scream stopped abruptly, turning into painful gasps. Several other students rushed over and started punching and kicking her, seemingly using her as a punching bag.
Their consistent bullying tactics meant that every out-of-town student they had ever disliked ended up being expelled from the academy in this manner.
Interestingly, they still harbored a sliver of belief that this was righteous—outsiders were smelly, ugly, and of low quality, as if defeating them would purify the beautiful empire.
But justice will never be satisfied just because one or two outsiders are driven away. Driving away one smelly and dirty outsider makes even those who didn't seem so unpleasant before appear smelly and dirty themselves.
There will always be something more annoying, something more disgusting. Outsiders are like cockroaches; we have to keep getting rid of them and keep purifying our beautiful empire.
Thinking about it this way, the reagent I just used doesn't seem so excessive. Disgusting outsiders should be aware of their own ugliness; having a pretty face is a desecration of my Aslan aesthetics.
"Help...stop hitting him..."
"it hurts……"
"Kill her!!! How could you let her make such disgusting noises!!! Kill her now!!!"
The male trainee couldn't tell whose roar it was anymore. He only felt that he and the people around him were like a raging bull, unable to vent their anger until they trampled the inhuman thing on the ground into a pulp.
He didn't know how much time had passed when a buzzing sound, like tinnitus, suddenly echoed in his brain. He felt as if he had been doused with cold water, and his consciousness gradually cleared.
In an instant, the feeling of exhaustion from excessive physical exertion overwhelmed him, but after calming down, a fact that suddenly appeared in his mind terrified him even more.
"Oh no...oh no, she's not dead, is she?!"
The group of trainees stared at the motionless object on the ground, their hearts sinking instantly.
"Hey!? Out-of-towner!? I'm asking you a question!?"
One of the trainees mustered up the courage to step forward and kick, but there was no response.
This really terrified them.
Those outsiders who are qualified to study at the academy are, after all, free citizens introduced by the empire. They are legitimate citizens, not undocumented immigrants or slaves. Even nobles will pay the price for killing someone according to the law.
While they may not face the death penalty, their futures will certainly be greatly affected.
"Damn it! Damn it! Could he really be dead?"
"Her brother is a professor, he'll definitely find out about us!"
"We need to find a place to bury her. Yes, bury her. As long as there's no evidence, even if it's her brother, he can't do anything to us."
"But where can we bury her? We can't possibly carry her out of the academy, can we?"
"Then let's fake it... fake it as an accident..."
"What should we do about the reagent on her face...?"
A group of terrified students chimed in, but their rationality returned, and they began to brainstorm, their minds sparking with unprecedented brilliance.
"Such crude false evidence won't do, her father will investigate."
A crisp, clear voice joined the conversation.
"Um... no, her father?"
The male trainee was taken aback. In his memory, the only relatives who came to Aslan with this trainee from out of town were his older brother and sister-in-law. "Who is her father?"
"Her father is the esteemed Marquis Mocardod, have you forgotten?"
A pleasant, soft laugh rang out, but it sounded like a bell from hell.
The trainees were stunned for a long time before slowly turning around and seeing the pink-haired girl from out of town sitting on a small wooden box, looking at them with her legs swinging back and forth and an undisguised smile on her face.
“You killed the Marquis’s daughter, so you can’t leave it unclean.”
"Whoaaaaaah!!!"
The already taut nerves finally snapped at this moment, and a group of students scattered and fled as if they had seen a ghost.
"Eh?"
Greta tilted her head. "What's wrong with these humans? They kill people and don't even dispose of the bodies. If they run away like this, aren't they just waiting to be caught?"
"Sigh, it's up to this kind-hearted person like me to step in."
Greta jumped off the barrel and walked briskly to Favina, who was lying on the ground, battered beyond recognition. She bent down gently and whispered as if in a whisper:
"Don't be afraid, don't be afraid. Hell isn't in a hurry to take you in yet. Come and tell me quietly, who's been scheming against my brother behind my back?"
Chapter Thirty-Four: The Demon's Curse
"what!!!"
Pharos suddenly opened his eyes and caught a glimpse of sunlight streaming through the curtains.
Daylight broke...
Thank goodness, dawn finally broke.
He sat up, the horrifying image of himself punching and kicking the female corpse in his dream still lingering in his mind.
He was the senior student who led the bullying of Greta in the abandoned warehouse.
