“My mother has blood from the Eastern Yang Continent, so I am of mixed blood.” Seemingly noticing the doubt in Ella’s eyes, the black-haired girl smiled and spoke, her voice clear and slightly weak, “Greetings, Your Majesty, my name is Lilia Betis, you can just call me Lilia.”

"Lady Lilia, hello." Ella responded politely.

Lilia was rather thin, wearing a loose-fitting burgundy dress with lace trim and a short, lake-blue shawl wrapped around her upper body. If she didn't speak, Ella might have mistaken her for a life-sized doll.

Behind Ella, the maid bowed to the girl in the wheelchair, slowly left the room, and gently closed the door behind her.

"Thank you for your visit, Your Holiness. Please forgive me for being unwell and unable to greet you in person." The black-haired girl extended her hand to a soft chair placed opposite her. "Your Holiness, please sit here. Winnie has prepared tea and refreshments, which will be brought over shortly."

Ella nodded, lifted her skirt and sat on the soft chair. Although she was a member of the royal family, her first impression of the girl was quite good. The polite and delicate beauty always made people feel protective of her.

"Lady Lilia, thank you for your hospitality. May the great God of Light bless you." Ella crossed her fingers in prayer, her devout face like a holy flower in the darkness. "If there is anything I can do to help you, I will do my best."

“Your Holiness, you may simply call me Lilia. I am but a mortal bound by illness.” Lilia placed her hand on the cherry wood tabletop. Her delicate forearm was also wrapped in bandages, with only the tips of her fingers showing. “As you can see, my body has been plagued by a strange disease since childhood. My skin burns involuntarily, and I can only barely suppress it by wrapping most of my body in bandages to prevent it from coming into contact with light.”

Does skin burn when exposed to light?

In her previous life, she encountered a creature with this problem called a vampire, Ella thought to herself, but she still had a conscience and was thinking about the problem of this strange disease.

The fact that vampires are scorched by the sun is due to their racial instinct, not a disease. And it doesn't seem to be as severe as this one looks. But generally speaking, diseases wouldn't have such strange symptoms that could cause direct physical changes to the body.

This is rather strange, especially since this is a member of the imperial family. In her previous life, she had never heard of such a person in the imperial family.

“Miss Lilia… if you don’t mind, may I take a look?” Ella also placed her hand on the table, gesturing to touch Lilia’s small hand wrapped in bandages.

“Please do as you wish, Your Holiness.” Lilia nodded.

Ella took off her gloves and gently grasped that delicate, boneless hand, even though her own hand was also small.

A subtle yet familiar sensation lingered beneath the bandages. Ella frowned slightly, her thumb tracing along the other's knuckles until it touched the exposed fingertips.

The moment my fingertips touched you, a very indescribable feeling came over me. Although the skin between my skin was cold, it felt like there was a surge of heat beneath my skin.

As if sensing an external stimulus, the heat seemed to seep out of her fingertips, and Ella quickly and gently raised her thumb to break the strange touch.

"Miss Lilia, when exactly did you contract this disease?"

“According to my mother, it was the fifth day after I was born.” Lilia gave a haggard smile. “My skin was like burning parchment, and if it weren’t for my butler, Mr. Winters, helping me in time, I might have died that day.”

"I'm so sorry, Miss Lilia, I admire your strength."

“It’s alright, Your Holiness, I’ve already persevered this far anyway.” After Lilia finished speaking, she coughed lightly, her hand twitched slightly, and her fingertips accidentally touched Ella’s palm.

Like a match striking red phosphorus, a blinding golden light suddenly shone in mid-air.

"Ah!" Lilia exclaimed softly, and Ella, quick as a flash, grabbed the gloves on the table and immediately covered her sparking fingertips.

A wisp of smoke dissipated, and Ella easily released her hand, revealing that Lilia's originally fair fingertips were now somewhat charred.

This disease is so strange, it really flares up with the slightest touch!

"Your Holiness, are you alright?!" Lilia anxiously tried to check Ella's hand, but her outstretched hand hovered in mid-air, hesitant to touch it. Suddenly, her gaze fell upon a shocking, scorched mark on Ella's once-fair palm, like a gruesome crack appearing on a perfect work of art. "Your Holiness... Your Holiness, I'm so sorry, I'll have Winnie bring some ointment right away..."

"Don't worry," Ella waved her hand dismissively. She wasn't some delicate noblewoman; she wouldn't even blink at such a minor injury. As for the scar, she could simply use a little evil god magic somewhere out of the way and it would heal itself.

“This…this won’t do,” Lilia said with some guilt. She pressed the bell beside her and called softly towards the door, “Winnie, quick, the burn ointment!”

"It's really no big deal." Ella was actually more concerned about the strange flames that had just appeared than the injury on her hand.

The flames were not like ordinary fire with a pale red tail; instead, they were golden like the halo of the sun.

She had seen such fire in her previous life; it was the flame that the arcane mages of the Holy Temple under the Holy Temple of Light would summon.

His name is Sunfire Mage, and he belongs to the Sunfire Sanctuary, which worships Osmun, the god of the sun and fire.

How could this girl possess the holy flames of the Sunfire God?

Ella felt increasingly uneasy; the mysteries hidden within this strange illness seemed far greater than she had imagined…

In this world, when you encounter something strange that is beyond your expectations, it's best not to continue investigating out of curiosity, but to quickly avoid it.

This is a universally accepted truth for all players, and those who don't share this understanding are basically all dead.

Chapter Thirty-Seven: The Sunfire Vampire

The Winnie that Lilia mentioned was actually the little maid.

At this moment, the other party was bandaging Ella's burned hand. Perhaps because such things often happened in the house, the little maid's movements of applying medicine and wrapping bandages were very skilled.

Just as she had thought, she would remain extremely vigilant about matters involving deities. More importantly, her attempt to expose the evil god's abilities for healing in this matter had not yielded any high-value returns so far.

Saving a fallen royal descendant who might be suppressed by the current royal family might not bring any benefits, but the potential risks of displaying evil god magic are much greater. Ella couldn't even guarantee that her "healing holy light" tentacles wouldn't be shredded by the rampaging holy flames within this guy's body. If she failed to save him, or even convert him to a believer, or worse, if the conflict of divine power directly killed him, things would be in serious trouble.

Ella wasn't a bad person, but she wasn't the kind of person who would help just anyone. The person opposite her was suffering from an illness, but not on the verge of death; if she didn't help, she would die or something. Besides, in some ways, she was a noblewoman, and her life was certainly more comfortable than that of the beggars and poor people on the streets. If she were truly overflowing with compassion, she should have gone and saved those people.

The risks and rewards are unbalanced, and there is no moral bias. Being a "beautiful girl" might slightly increase one's emotional appeal, but it cannot be the deciding factor. Therefore, after thinking about it, Ella finally decided to express her inability to help Lilia with her strange illness. "Miss Lilia, although I am only capable of using some basic holy light magic, please forgive me, your illness is not something I can cure."

Hearing this, the haggard girl did not express her resentment, but said softly, "You are too modest, Holy Maiden. If you, as the chosen one of the God of Light, only know the basics of Holy Light magic, I believe that there is hardly anyone in the entire Holy Temple who would dare to say that they understand Holy Light magic. But... could you please let go of my obsession and tell me why you think my illness is incurable?"

How should I put it? Directly stating that your outfit might be the work of the God of Sunfire would be inappropriate, as I think it's best to avoid potential harm.

Ella pondered for a moment without showing any emotion, then said, "Miss Lilia, your illness is not an ordinary one; it bears traces of other forces and cannot be removed simply by using holy light magic."

"Thank you, Winnie. Please go and close the door for me." Lilia nodded to the maid who had finished bandaging me and put down the tea and snacks. Only after the maid left the room did she continue to Ella, "Is the Holy Maiden trying to say that the Holy Light magic couldn't dispel the residual divine power in my body?"

Ella's brow twitched slightly. She picked up the teacup on the table, took an elegant sip, and said, "Miss Lilia is truly knowledgeable."

"Since I can't go out, I usually just stay home and read to pass the time, so I've learned a little bit about it." Lilia looked at the teacup in Ella's hand. "The Book of Osmun says that the golden flame is the power of the god who controls the sun and fire."

“Miss Lilia must understand my concerns,” Ella said with a wry smile. “Although I am fortunate to be chosen by God, I dare not disobey the will of the true God.”

“Your Excellency can rest assured about that,” Lilia said, fiddling with the bandage wrapped around her right hand. “This is not a curse from the gods, but a blessing.”

"Blessing...?"

Lilia didn't speak, but slowly unwrapped the bandage on the back of her hand, revealing skin covered in burn marks and a golden pattern.

The pattern burned like flames the moment it came into contact with the air, producing white smoke, but Lilia endured the pain and did not wrap the bandage back up so that Ella could see it clearly.

It was a sun similar to the symbol of the god of light, except that unlike the symbol of the god of light which had an eye, it had two balls of flame with tails of fire connected end to end.

"I saw it, Miss Lilia, quickly put the bandage back on." To prevent the girl in front of her from suffering too much pain, Ella glanced at Lilia and quickly put the bandage back on.

She grasped those thin hands with both of hers, and the subtle sensation returned. With this unique feeling, Ella was now even more certain of what she had just seen.

Just like the thing on the back of my hand, that's a stigmata.

This Lilia Betis is actually the Chosen One of the Sunfire.

If the people of the Sunfire Sanctuary are informed, the Sunfire Sanctuary will immediately come and take this guy to be their saintess.

“I think I understand... but…” Ella frowned slightly, “why you, as the chosen one, were burned by the corresponding divine power.”

“Your Holiness is unaware of this,” Lilia Betis said with a helpless smile on her thin face. “To tell you the truth, my mother is a descendant of vampires.”

“…Huh?” Ella was stunned.

But the black-haired girl slightly opened her mouth, and even though the light was dim, Ella could still see two small sharp teeth on the side of her upper jaw.

Although ordinary people can also grow canine teeth, if you look closely, Lilia's two are clearly sharper than those of ordinary people.

Holy crap, it really is a vampire!?

Or a vampire blessed by the sun god?? That's too abstract!

Ella was dumbfounded; this was as outrageous as an evil god blessed by the god of light.

Wait a minute... it seems there really is such a thing, so it's not impossible for vampires blessed by the sun to accept it.

“This… Miss Lilia, if I may be so bold, is a bit beyond my expectations.” Ella admitted that she was truly astonished. “The blessing of the Sunfire God and the constitution of a vampire… it’s a miracle that you’ve survived until now.”

Lilia shut her mouth and smiled weakly. Even though half of her face was wrapped in bandages, revealing only a deep purple pupil, her pitiful and touching appearance was still undeniable. "So... Your Holiness, although it may be a bit offensive to say this... I actually want to know how you balance the conflicting forces within you."

Ella paused for a moment, then suddenly realized what the other person was referring to. Her eyes widened slightly in surprise. "I don't know what you're talking about, Miss Lilia."

“Your Holiness…” Lilia withdrew her bandaged hands and placed them in front of her. “I have been as honest as possible. In fact, you should also know that when I dared to reveal my vampire identity to you, who stands on the side of the Holy Temple, I was already certain of some things.”

She's right. The Holy Church's attitude towards vampires is the same as its attitude towards the Dark Cult: exterminate them without any room for negotiation.

As the Holy Maiden of Light and the representative of the Sanctuary, Ella's willingness to openly reveal her vampire identity suggests that she had a reason to take this risk.

The reason could be some information, or it could be some kind of trump card. Lilia didn't say it outright, and Ella can't guess it yet.

but……

The previously peaceful and friendly atmosphere instantly turned cold. Ella narrowed her eyes, her crimson pupils appearing eerily in the darkness. "Miss Lilia...aren't you afraid I'll kill you right now?"

Chapter Thirty-Eight: Open Schemes (Please continue reading)

“Of course I know that this is also a risk.” Faced with Ella’s threat, Lilia’s tone was calm and unhurried. “Holy Maiden… no, ancient deity, I am prepared.”

Ella sized up Lilia. She could tell that the girl in front of her wasn't as fearless as she appeared. Her slightly trembling shoulders and her somewhat heaving throat betrayed her inner feelings.

She shook her head, regaining her composure. "I'm sorry, Miss Lilia, but even so, I won't take unnecessary risks."

"Even though I've learned the truth, is the Holy Maiden still unwilling to take the risk?"

As Lilia said, when she revealed the fact that Ella possessed a power within her that contradicted the Holy Light, Ella was left with only two choices—

First, demonstrate that power to help her; second, demonstrate that power to silence her.

Otherwise, Lilia's existence would be an unstable factor beyond Ella's control, a bomb that could detonate her identity issue at any time.

It has to be said that the royal family is a real pain... This black-haired girl in front of me started by being frank and open, revealing that we are both vampires who are not accepted by the "mainstream" in order to build rapport and play the emotional card. Then she said that her illness was due to the conflict of the Sunfire God's Chosen in order to show her value and to show that the cure would not involve any risks. Finally, she revealed Ella's identity and forced Ella to choose between silencing her and getting treatment.

Of course, she may have also secretly investigated Ella's movements to help her assess whether Ella would lean towards killing or saving when making that final decision.

With just a few simple words, he clearly stated the risks, benefits, and choices. This little guy had planned this open conspiracy against Ella from the very beginning.

but……

“But… Princess Lilia, if you were the reigning royal family, I might have been forced to make a choice based on these considerations.” Ella calmly sipped her black tea. “Unfortunately, you are not… In fact, your understanding of my true identity or abilities is merely a guess without any concrete evidence, right? Without proof, and without sufficient support to influence public opinion, even if you could guess something, the threat to me would be negligible.”

“I can’t hide it from you, Your Grace,” Lilia said with a wry smile. “You’ve even exposed my identity.”

The problem lies here: the most crucial part lacks sufficient supporting evidence. If, as Lilia claims, she is prepared for any eventuality, then she should directly present the evidence proving Ella's true identity, even stating that "if you don't help me or kill me, someone will hand this evidence over to the Sanctuary." That would achieve the best coercive effect.

But since she's already staked her life on the gambling table, the fact that she's hesitant to play her cards only means that her hand isn't as strong as she thought.

Ella stood up and bowed slightly. "The old gentleman who led me there at the beginning was not someone an ordinary member of the collateral royal family would be qualified to hire as a butler—he was a grandmaster-level swordsmanship master, wasn't he? In addition, considering the decisiveness and intelligence you just displayed, if you hadn't been suppressed, there's no reason why you wouldn't have made a name for yourself in the noble circles. Furthermore, considering the bloodline of your mother that you mentioned earlier and the illness you have, we can roughly deduce your current identity and situation."

Hmph, trying to fool me? You're still too naive.

Having lived two lives, Ella was not so easily manipulated by a little girl, even though the little girl was surprisingly cunning and shrewd.

"Your Holiness, if you are willing to help me solve my problems, I am willing to dedicate everything to you... Is that not enough?" Lilia looked somewhat dejected, her thin and frail body lying helplessly in the wheelchair.

“Your Highness, it’s not that I don’t want to help you,” Ella said helplessly, “but I’m not entirely sure I can help you. If the treatment fails and something happens to you, the result would be even worse than it is now.”

"I am prepared to face the risks, Your Majesty."

“But I didn’t do it well.” Ella shook her head apologetically. “You are very smart and brave, Your Highness, but I’m sorry I can’t take the risk of the treatment failing. I hope you can find a better way.”

Are you kidding me? If the evil god's power and the holy flames of the sun accidentally clash and kill this girl, wouldn't I become the one who assassinated a member of the royal family?

Even though I have the status of a saintess, and Lilia had her subordinates testify that I had nothing to do with her death, I was still inevitably in trouble because we were in the same room that day.

More importantly, there's absolutely no need to take this risk. Ye Xiao's side is almost able to dig up the Miracle Sorcerer's offerings; they have ways to improve their strength there. Why risk it using this identity?

"Your Holiness..." Lilia pleaded, her large, watery eyes seemingly brimming with tears, "I am truly prepared for anything."

"No matter how well you do, it's useless, Princess Lilia. I can't help you." Ella refused coldly and was about to turn and leave when she suddenly caught a glimpse of something strange by the curtains.

She looked closely and saw that on the large curtain next to where they were talking, the outdoor light vaguely illuminated the outline of a figure.

The girl with black hair and purple eyes was sitting below that figure, smiling at Ella.

With a ripping sound, the curtains were cleaved open by a sharp blade, revealing the night sky and instantly filling the room with the bright moonlight.

At the same time, the back of the soft chair that Lilia was sitting on was also split open.

The instant she noticed something amiss, Ella rushed forward and yanked the black-haired girl off the chair, narrowly avoiding the blade aimed at her neck.

Half of the curtain slipped down, revealing a figure shrouded in a black robe kneeling on the windowsill, a dagger in hand.

"You see, you will still save me, my saintess." Lilia, who had been attacked, lay in Ella's arms and smiled.

"Where did this assassin come from?! Where is your butler?!" Ella exclaimed in surprise.

“I sent Mr. Winster out as soon as you came in, otherwise how would I have attracted the assassin?” Lilia turned slightly and rested her head on Ella’s chest. “Now you don’t have to worry about the treatment failing, Your Majesty. I’ve brought you a scapegoat.”

"Huh...? Have you gone crazy, you little brat!?"

Ella had planned everything perfectly, but she hadn't anticipated that this guy would directly lure an assassin over.
