"Uphold justice, remain true to conscience..."
His foot had already stepped out before he even thought.
"Sir! Where are you going?"
Ryan called out from behind.
Dongjia did not answer. He pushed aside the soldiers blocking his way, knocked aside the enemy soldiers who tried to stop him, and rushed towards the place where the emperor had fallen. He swung his sword left and right, not to kill the enemy, but to clear a path.
"Protect His Majesty!"
He heard himself shouting, but the voice sounded unfamiliar and unlike his own.
Several Imperial Guard soldiers noticed him and followed, but many more were bewildered in the chaos.
Why is this knight, dressed in the armor of the Boreas family, protecting the emperor?
Donga finally reached George Lant's side. The young emperor was pale, but his eyes were sharp as swords.
"who are you?"
The emperor asked, his voice trembling with pain.
“Donga Grerat, Your Majesty.”
Dongjia knelt on one knee, using his body to shield the emperor from the approaching enemy soldiers, "Knight of Buyena Village".
"The Boreas family?"
The emperor gave a sarcastic smile, then stretched out his neck and said, "Take my head and present it to your Duke Ars!"
"No, Your Majesty."
Donga raised his sword. "I will fulfill my duty as a knight."
"Sir Donga, you are a true knight."
The emperor, clinging to Dongjia's armor, stood up. "I am grateful for your loyalty."
At that moment, three Bereas soldiers rushed at the same time. Donga also got up, parried the first sword, dodged the second one, and the third sword cut through his arm armor, blood gushing out. But he did not retreat. Instead, he took a step forward and pierced the throat of the enemy soldier at the front with his sword.
More soldiers surrounded him. Dongga's armor was already torn, and he was about to run out of strength. He knew he couldn't hold on for much longer, but he still stood there, like a wall blocking the emperor's way.
"Whoosh whoosh whoosh!"
Just then, the horn sounded again. It was the Boreas horn, but it was different from the orthodox Lion House of Ars; the sound was longer and deeper.
As the sounds of battle gradually subsided, soldiers on both sides involuntarily stopped firing their weapons and looked in the direction from which the sounds came.
In the north, a new army has emerged—a cavalry force of nearly a thousand men. Each of them is equipped with full-body black armor, carries a sword, and has a magical firearm that gleams in the sunlight on their back. Their equipment is breathtakingly sophisticated, and their banners, emblazoned with a black background and green lion emblem, flutter in the wind.
At the very front of the army, a figure rode on a huge black warhorse. The man was not wearing a helmet, his long emerald green hair fluttered in the wind, and his face was as perfect as a sculpture, as cold as a glacier.
Ziegharut Boreas Grerat.
Duke of the North, conqueror of the Demon God Empire, three sword gods (Water God Style, Northern God Style, Sword God Style), right arm of the Dragon God... his titles are too numerous to count.
His arrival silenced the entire battlefield. Sieghart slowly rode his horse to the center of the battlefield, his gaze sweeping over the corpses scattered on the ground, over the two opposing sides, and finally landing on a knight covered in blood who was still standing in front of the emperor.
"interesting."
Sieghart's voice wasn't loud, but it reached everyone's ears clearly: "A knight of the Bereas family is protecting the emperor against the Bereas family."
He dismounted, took the head of the Zeferos family patriarch from the bag and threw it on the ground. Then he walked toward Donga and the emperor with unhurried steps, as if he were strolling in his own courtyard rather than on a battlefield. The soldiers involuntarily made way for him.
Duke Arles saw him and spurred his horse forward, his face beaming with indescribable joy.
"Big brother."
Sieghart nodded slightly to Duke Ars, then looked at Georgeland on the ground, "Your Majesty."
"Minister Siegharut."
The emperor, his arm trembling, pointed his sword at him and asked, "Have you come to support me, or to support the rebels?"
"I'm here to end this war."
Sieghart said calmly, “Stark Zephyrus Grellat is dead. Your Majesty, you have lost. Now you are all alone.”
Then, his eyes locked onto Dongjia:
Tell me, sir. Why are you protecting the Emperor?
All eyes were on Donga. He could feel the gazes of Sieghart and Duke Yars, as well as the gazes of the surrounding soldiers—some incomprehensible, some admiring, and some hostile.
Dongga took a deep breath, pain shooting through his entire body, and then stood up straight to face the legendary Duke of the North.
"Because he is the legitimate emperor, Your Grace."
Dongjia's voice was hoarse from exhaustion, but every word was clear: "A knight's oath is to protect the weak and defend justice, and a fifteen-year-old boy should not die in conspiracy and betrayal."
"I remember you, you self-proclaimed chivalrous wretch who disrespects the Boreas family."
Sieghart was amused by his serious demeanor and also remembered how he had given his son a severe beating many years ago. "Don't you have even the slightest bit of gratitude for the kindness shown to the Boreas family?"
"I also swore an oath to the Boreas family..."
Donga looked at Duke Yars and said, "Lord Yars is the regent, the duke, and the legion commander, not the emperor. His Majesty George Lant is the rightful ruler of the Asra Empire."
Whispers arose from the crowd, and Duke Ars's face turned extremely ugly.
“Following the Duke into this war is a betrayal of justice, and I cannot allow the Duke to bear the guilt of regicide and patricide.”
Dongjia looked around, at the corpses scattered on the ground, at the broken city walls, and at the bewilderment in the eyes of the surviving soldiers.
He thought of the villagers of Buena, of little Tom, of Aisha waiting for him at home, and of his son whom he might never have.
"I don't know what honor is left in a war like this. I only know that when I see the emperor fall from his horse and about to be killed, I cannot stand idly by. If this is an honor, then I would rather not have it."
Sieghart stared at him for a long time, his brown eyes seeming to see something in him.
Then, the Duke of the North turned to face the entire battlefield.
"The war is over."
His voice was as cold as ice and as unquestionable as an iron law: "Victory belongs to Bereas. The Emperor of the Anemoi family has lost to the army of the Bereas family. The knights of the Bereas family protected the Emperor's life. Lay down your weapons and stop the killing!"
Sieghart's voice echoed across the battlefield. After a brief silence, a commotion began to spread—not cheers, nor protests, but a weary, bewildered disturbance.
The soldiers looked at each other, their grip on their swords tightening and loosening repeatedly. Most of them showed no joy of victory, only the numbness of surviving a catastrophe. Corpses piled up like mountains, and blood seeped into the soil, turning the plains outside Roya City dark red. The air was filled with the smells of rust, gunpowder, and rotting corpses.
"Brother, we've won this battle."
"That's what Siegharut said calmly."
"But the victory wasn't honorable enough."
Ars sheathed his sword, his voice hoarse and filled with suppressed anger, "If the first person you killed when you arrived here was George Lant instead of that traitor from the Zeferos family, the Boreas army and the Royal Guard wouldn't have suffered such heavy losses."
"Especially since he's still alive."
Ars looked at the Emperor and Donga beside him, "My father created the Asura Empire, and I should inherit his legacy. But today I can only win by force. George Lant's existence is a scourge to the Boreas family, not to mention there is a knight who protects the Emperor."
Donga felt his throat go dry. He could feel the eyes of the Emperor, Yars, and Sieghart, and he could see hundreds of eyes staring at him. At this moment, he was no longer the poor knight from that remote village, but an unexpected fulcrum in this war, even affecting whether Yars could rightfully claim the throne.
“I need to give the Empire a decent explanation. Both I and the Emperor have lost too many people. If the Emperor is willing to fight to the death, I can still win with an overwhelming advantage. I believe this is not an ending that most people can accept.”
Ars looked at the emperor, "Blood ties bind us together. In a dignified manner, I will pass the throne to the Boreas family. I will guarantee your safety, give you a suitable fief, and allow you to live out the rest of your life in peace."
"I demand trial by combat!"
George Lant's hands were trembling, whether from blood loss or anger, Donga could feel the tension in the boy's body, the resentment almost tangible.
"According to tradition, any one of you shall engage me in a one-on-one duel! If I win, the Boreas family shall withdraw its troops; if I lose, whether you kill me or do whatever you wish is entirely up to you!"
"No one would want to duel with the emperor... it's utterly undignified."
Sieghart said, "Your Majesty may choose a knight who is willing to fight for you to duel with the knight chosen by the Boreas family."
"If Your Majesty's knights win, you will continue to rule, and the Boreas family will lay down their arms, acknowledge your authority, and accept any punishment. If you lose, you will voluntarily abdicate the throne and crown Duke Jars of Fituia."
“Very well, I accept,” George Lant said.
At this moment, Ars pondered for a moment, then slowly nodded: "Then, who will fight for the Boreas family?"
Sieghart smiled slightly: "Of course it's me."
A collective gasp rippled through the crowd.
The Duke of the North, the Sword God of the Three Schools, the Conqueror of the Ghost God Empire... to challenge him to a duel is tantamount to suicide.
George Lant's face grew even paler. He looked around and saw that most of the Royal Guard knights were wounded, and the few who were unharmed avoided his gaze.
The young emperor's lips trembled as he looked at Dongjia.
Dongjia understood the meaning behind that look.
He was the only one on the field who protected the emperor in the final moments, the only fool who might accept this doomed mission.
"Your Majesty..." Dongjia began to speak.
"Jazz".
George Lant interrupted him, his voice suddenly becoming calm, "Would you be willing to participate in the trial by combat in my place?"
The question remains unresolved...
Donga could hear his own heartbeat and feel the sweat-soaked shirt under his armor. He thought of Buena Village, Aisha, and the villagers buried in the shallow pits on the edge of the hills at the border of the Fitoa and Donadi territories. He wanted to go back alive and continue that mundane yet arduous life.
But then he remembered the day he knelt in the hall of the Boreas family and took the oath, the feeling of Duke Ars placing the sword on his shoulder, and the words "Defend justice, be true to your conscience."
“I accept,” Dongjia said.
"It seems there are still true knights these days."
Sieghart nodded, seemingly having anticipated this answer. Duke Yars' expression was complex, a mixture of relief and admiration for Donga, while George Lantner's eyes welled up with tears, which he blinked hard to keep from falling.
Then, Sieghart turned to face the entire battlefield, "So, in accordance with ancient tradition, I declare: the dispute between Emperor Georgeland Anemoy Asra of the Asra Empire and Duke of Fituya, Imperial Regent Ars Boreas Grerat, will be resolved through a trial by combat!"
His voice was repeated by the Northern Legion's messengers, one after another, echoing throughout the entire battlefield.
"The trial will take place at sunrise tomorrow outside the main gate of Roya City! Sir Donga Grerath! Against Duke Sieghart Boreas Grerath!"
"The victor will decide the future of the empire!"
……
As night fell, countless torches were lit inside and outside the city of Roya.
On the battlefield, soldiers from both sides began to clear away the corpses in tacit agreement. Soldiers from the Boreas family and the Imperial Guard worked side by side, carrying away the bodies one by one and digging pits to bury them.
At first, no one spoke, only the sound of shovels digging dirt. Later, the soldiers began to exchange their items. Soldiers from the Fitoa and Usl territories tasted fine bread from the capital, while soldiers from the Royal Guard enjoyed Fitoa's red tea and strong liquor. Later, the soldiers, having removed their armor, drank and chatted, telling the most risqué jokes while revealing their true feelings for their sweethearts to their newly acquainted brothers.
Dongjia was placed in a barracks in Luoya City. The army doctor treated his wounds, and after the wounds were treated, he was allowed to wash off the bloodstains and change into a clean set of clothes.
After finishing the meal that Ryan had brought, he had just lain down when there was another knock on the door of the barracks. It was the Earl of York.
The Earl of Roya was not wearing armor, only simple casual clothes. The scars on his face were more obvious in the candlelight. He held a bottle of wine and two glasses in his hand.
"You've come uninvited, Sir Donga."
York sat down and poured two glasses of wine. "I think you need this."
Dongjia took the glass and drank it all in one gulp. The wine was strong, burning his throat, but it also helped to relax his tense nerves a little.
"You're crazy."
York said bluntly, "Challenge Lord Sieghart? Do you even know who he is?"
"I know."
No, you don't know.
York shook his head. "I saw him fight. Ten years ago, on the border of the Kingdom of Lanoa..."
“I beat up his son, you know that.”
Dongjia drank another cup and silently poured a third cup of wine.
"You might die, Donga. Not possibly, you definitely will die."
York's voice turned serious. "And even if you win... that's impossible... but even if a miracle happens, do you think the Emperor can sit comfortably in the Silver Palace? The Boreas family will not accept it, and this civil war will only continue in the near future!"
"I know."
Dongjia repeated.
"Then why did you do it?"
