The other person seeks help from you.
This is true for both Tu Mi and her teacher Shen He.
The wait was long, lasting more than ten minutes, until the little girl on the bed stopped convulsing.
Shen He stared at the fresh stains on the bed for a while before slowly speaking:
"Zuo Le".
"Ok?"
"You can summon the void, right?"
"I'm not sure, but I can give it a try," Zuo Le said honestly.
His calm response, however, made Shen He somewhat nervous, causing his usually serious face to once again display a stiff and unpleasant expression:
“I know it’s wrong to do this, but she’s in so much pain. The church keeps telling me to wait for new medicine, but I can’t wait, and neither can she.”
I only had this daughter when I was thirty. I just want her to be a little more comfortable, Zuo Le, do you understand?
Having a daughter at the age of thirty is not considered early in modern society, but it's not late either.
However, in the Dark Star Era, which upheld the Three Eternal Commandments and the Ritual of Inheritance, it was definitely considered very late.
"I understand, teacher."
Zuo Le's answer seemed light and casual, but it added even heavier weight to the already unbalanced scales in Shen He's heart.
It became so heavy that he began to resist one of the three eternal commandments he had followed for nearly forty years: reverence.
[Reverence: Forever remember the catastrophe brought by the fall of the dark star; never abuse power.]
"Zuo Le, you've always wanted to obtain a more powerful spirit communication ritual, haven't you?"
"Yes, teacher, so what do you need me to do?"
Zuo Le's words, which were clearly the student's obedience, sounded like the whispers of a demon at this moment, causing Shen He to gradually sink into depravity.
Shen He straightened his slightly hunched back, raised his head, and closed his eyes.
There were no somber speeches, nor any sudden realizations.
It was like a silent decision made on an ordinary afternoon, by chance.
When Shen He opened his eyes again, his gaze swept across the entire room.
There were clean gauze sheets drying on the windowsill, children's clothes hanging on the clothesline, enamel bowls soaking in soup, and rice they hadn't finished eating.
Finally, he walked to his bookshelf and pulled out a book from an inconspicuous corner.
Dangerous Things
Although it was hidden in a corner, there was no dust, which meant that Shen He often read this book.
"Teacher?" Zuo Le asked, but Shen He raised his hand to stop him.
He opened the book; a few notes remained on the pages, and began to speak:
"The essence of psychic arts is to transcend the 'frequency matching' between space and the present world. Psychics broadcast their own frequency of existence through array patterns, spiritual power infusion, and mental fluctuations."
Some beings or spirits, if they sense a signal that resonates with them, may respond to the call and cross the rift, but responding is not the same as obeying.
This is the content of the first lesson in spiritualism, and it's something Shen He repeats every year at the start of the semester.
Zuo Le nodded in response:
“I know I can make them feel my presence, but that doesn’t mean they’re willing to listen to me. The inability to establish a contract is the reason I’ve always failed.”
In just a few words, Zuo Le summarized the original owner's failure in psychic abilities.
Shen He simply nodded indifferently.
"After the Dark Star fell, a large number of strange creatures appeared in this world."
Black beasts corrupted in the Dark Zone, star beasts floating in the sky disguised as stardust, or the spirits and grudges of creatures after death.
Spirit mediums communicate with these beings through spiritual rituals, establishing a tacit understanding.
However, tacit understanding is not solid, so the relationship between the two needs to be bound by a contract, and the constraints of the contract are diverse.
A physical spiritual bond is formed in a ritual using the blood of a psychic, known as a blood pact.
A covenant is made between a spirit medium and a spirit beast, using their true names and vows to establish an eternal oath, known as a covenant.
Using spiritual power to weave shackles, the summoned beast is anchored to the soul ritual bell; this is called a Spirit Pact.
Shen He snapped his fingers lightly as he finished speaking.
Zuo Le felt a sudden gust of cold wind pass by, and the temperature around him dropped by more than 10 degrees.
Beside Shen He, a drifting soul appeared.
It is completely semi-transparent.
A semi-transparent headdress, a semi-transparent shirt, a semi-transparent skirt, gently resting against Shen He's neck, quiet and silent, like a gentle wife who cannot speak.
Ghost!
Zuo Le had long known that Shen He's summoned beast was a ghost, but he never expected it to be in such a tranquil and beautiful form.
"This is the power of traditional psychics, and the path that every traditional psychic will take—complex, tedious, yet steadfast."
"So, what the teacher is going to tell me today is not within the scope of traditional psychics?"
Shen He nodded, his eyes filled with a mixture of relief and regret:
"Zuo Le, you are really smart and quick-witted. It's like we've gone back to when we first met. You've been stuck on this for the past few years, but it's okay, there's still time."
Zuo Le frowned slightly. When they first met?
Have I been getting stuck on trivial matters these past few years?
Before he could think further, Shen He grabbed the armrest, and the ghost obediently floated onto Shen He's back, gently wrapping its arms around his neck like a spoiled little wife.
"Some psychic spells do not require a contract."
Chapter 66 Forbidden Summoning
"Subspace summoning?" Zuo Le recalled the demonstration exercise in class before.
"No, it's forbidden spiritual communication," Shen He corrected.
"A taboo?" Zuo Le asked, somewhat puzzled.
"Taboos do not represent power, but taboos usually mean uncontrollability."
It doesn't follow standard procedures; it has only two steps, and the core logic of these two steps is completely opposite to traditional channeling.
As Shen He spoke, he reached out his hand to Zuo Le again, spreading his five fingers.
With his other hand, he drew a spiritual ritual on his palm that Zuo Le had never seen before.
In the middle is a twisted triangle with three tentacles extending from it, and a dot is wrapped in one of the tentacles.
Even though Zuo Le had never seen this symbol before, he could sense that it was related to the void.
"We can use bait as an attraction, and our spiritual power and spirit as a channel to complete a one-way summoning."
This kind of spiritual ritual requires no anchoring, no incantation, and no contract; it is called…a dangerous thing.”
"Is it the void?" Zuo Le gave the answer.
"Not entirely. According to the definition of the Council of Lords of Cinder, all monsters that do not originate from the Dark Star and exist independently of the Dark Star are considered dangerous."
The Void does not belong to the Dark Star, nor even to this world; it does not need to conform to the original Dark Star system.
This power is malleable and adaptable; I feel it... possesses great potential.
At this point, Shen He had already explained why he was able to tell at a glance that there was something wrong with the insects summoned by Zuo Le and that they were void creatures.
He has been studying the Void and even has some understanding of the characteristics of Void creatures.
This is why he kept looking at Zuo Le with hesitation, but resisted when Zuo Le took the initiative to ask him questions.
The warning of reverence should be kept in mind.
"Has the teacher tried it themselves?"
"I've tried it, but forbidden psychic communication isn't just about summoning spirits; it's about opening an unknown door. You don't know what's on the other side, and you're not sure if it will bite you before you leave."
I can't tell what's behind the door, and I don't know if I can handle it, but Zuo Le, you're different..."
"What's different?"
Zuo Le was aware of his relationship with the Void, but he also wanted to hear Shen He's opinion.
"I saw it. Those violent energies are very docile in your hands. Even the bloodthirsty and slaughterful Void Beetles are like obedient babies in your hands. You seem to have a natural talent for controlling the void!"
Shen He has seen enough, at least Zuo Le agrees.
Zuo Le looked at Shen Yuesheng lying on the bed:
"Void, could you make her more comfortable?"
Shen He fell silent again, and after a long while, he finally spoke:
“I know what she wants, Zuo Le, I have no other choice…”
"Understood, I'll give it a try." Hearing Shen He's confirmation, Zuo Le nodded and knelt on one knee to prepare for the spirit communication ritual.
However, Shen He knelt down first and grasped his wrist:
“Zuo Le, I actually have some other ideas, but I lack the experience and money to try them. You know, the Holy Light is great, and you don’t necessarily have to go down this path…”
Listening to Shen He's long and rambling speech, Zuo Le didn't respond, but just watched him silently.
Shen He himself lost the desire to continue speaking, so he simply knelt on the ground and lowered his head:
"Zuo Le, am I despicable? I actually seduced my own student onto a forbidden path..."
Hearing this, Zuo Le felt a pang of sadness.
Teacher, oh teacher, your disciple was not seduced!
Even before he transmigrated here, the original owner had already secretly searched for forbidden summons.
"This is not the teacher's fault; it was my own choice."
Zuo Le gave a vague explanation, but Shen He didn't seem to listen and continued talking to himself:
"I'm really useless, and I'm really tired. I didn't believe in fate before, but after experiencing all sorts of things that left me breathless, I started to believe..."
Looking at Shen He's expression, Zuo Le felt a surge of understanding.
A wave of bitterness and exhaustion washed over me, but I couldn't bring myself to say it. I had chosen this path myself, and everything that had happened was a consequence of my past choices.
There's nothing to complain about.
"My teacher has always taken good care of me, and there are some things I should do. Let's begin."
Zuo Le's voice was gentle yet firm, soothing Shen He's fear and giving him confidence.
"Okay, let's begin."
Shen He finally released his hand from blocking him and began to instruct Zuo Le to draw the spirit communication ritual on the floor, which resembled a void mark.
Then, very detailed one-on-one guidance began.
"Teacher, is this the trajectory of spiritual energy?"
"No, the flow of spiritual power does not require those traditional rules."
"why?"
"Because the void is chaotic, it does not follow the laws of traditional spiritualism, so there should be new rules."
Following Shen He's guidance and instructions, Zuo Le gradually corrected the void ritual.
After several attempts, the spirit communication ritual still could not be completed, so Zuo Le paused for a moment:
"What does the teacher think we should do?"
“I think we should discard all the original ideas of spiritualism and perhaps follow the ideas of the void in order to stabilize the spiritual rituals.”
At this point, Zuo Le suddenly laughed and said something that even Shen He didn't understand:
