That's right, princesses don't shed tears.
It was just a rude grain of sand getting into the corner of her eye, causing her body to react negatively.
This weapon, implemented in version 1.6, contains at least three foreshadowing elements that would continue into the Fontaine version and beyond—
1. The Republic of Lema and the Twin Wolves
The Republic of Lema is the Roman Republic, its history dating back to the legendary twins Romulus and Remus, raised by wolves. (Hmm, this is another pun from the Genshin Impact writers, seemingly trying to cut costs.)
In the history of Earth, the "Wolf Twins" brothers fought each other, with Romulus killing Remus and naming the city they founded "Rome".
In Teyvat, in "The Twins of Wolves," Remus defeated Romulus and established Remuria, named after Remus, which is the predecessor of Fontaine.
Incidentally, the previous water goddess Egoria was modeled after the second Roman queen, Egeria, and the new water goddess Frinna is based on the ancient Roman goddess of springs, Furina. (Yes, these are all puns; their English names are exactly the same. We can discuss this in more detail when we get to Fontainebleau.)
2. Primordial Fetal Sea
"It made the fragrant sea of the primordial universe shine brightly, and two of the three bright moons that caused the beasts of the Kingdom of Aranya to rage were shattered by the longsword that tore apart the edge of the world, turning them into fine sand that even the princess's demonic eyes could not see."
—The "Fragrance Sea of the Primordial Universe" here is the Primordial Embryonic Sea mentioned in the Fontaine storyline.
"Who in this world is not a child of sin? When the bells of judgment toll, the sarong of night will fall once more. And the struggle of man and beast within it is but a waltz in the dark night."
—Look, the phrase "The Sinner's Dance" already encapsulates the main storyline of Fontaine. You can imagine what kind of identity the "Princess of Judgment" holds.
3. The Kingdom of Aranya and the Three-Sided Bright Moon
The three bright moons need no further explanation; she is the "Goddess of March".
The deeds of the March Goddess are recorded in the texts of "Bamboo Forest Moonlit Night", "The Story of the Shepherd Boy and the Magic Bottle", "The Arrow Piercing the Moon", and "The Staff of Red Sand", so I will not go into detail here.
And this "Land of Aranya" is of utmost importance.
Because its English name is "Arianrhod Realm," which is a pun on "deducting money." Besides "Arianrhod," Arianrhod also has another pronunciation: Arianrhod, which refers to the "goddess of the underworld," "goddess of the stars," "goddess of the moon," and "mother of night and darkness" in ancient Celtic mythology.
Yes, it's "Night Mother".
II. The Night Mother and Heavenly Principles
In mythology, the Night Mother Ariond is usually depicted as a fair-skinned, blonde goddess.
Her symbols include a silver wheel, weaving tools, a full moon, and a sacred crown (Corona Borealis, "Crown of the North")—does this remind you of the "March Goddess," the "Loom of Fate," and the "Crown of Reason"?
She possesses the power to manipulate the "false heavens" and control "fate".
The weaver of destiny is the true principle that governs the fate of all beings in Teyvat, which is also known as "the law of nature".
In addition, the spider is also related to this goddess, because in mythology she weaves the fate of mankind with a spider web as white as a silver wheel—and in the character story of Abedo, he mentioned that he saw a large spider under the silvery ancient tree in the secret realm, and that it tasted delicious when roasted (this is also mentioned in the book).
The silvery-white ancient tree, the ley lines, and the World Tree are strongly related. The copywriter deliberately had Abe mention this matter more often, which was to stamp the identity of "Night Mother" = Arianrod = "Heavenly Principle".
Even more "coincidentally," the game text "Shattered Dreams" mentions the name of the Goddess of March.
Legend has it that at special moments, through clear gemstones, one can see the past, the future, or someone's true heart. Just as legend says, somewhere in the world, there is a vast field of dandelions, as boundless as the sea; just as legend says, in the past, there were three bright moons in the sky, their names being Arya, Sannata, and Kanon, the three sisters ultimately separated by death in a calamity; just as legend says, a witch who could face death directly ultimately perished because of the emptiness within her heart, while the thief who fled overseas always waits to reunite with her.
Aria, Arianrhod's... nickname...
At this point, we can confirm that the "Mother of the Night" in "The White Princess and the Six Dwarfs" is Tenri, Arya, and Ariond.
Furthermore, according to the textual records related to the Goddess of March—this goddess even competed with her own clone for a man… (was she cheating on herself?)
III. "The Goddess of March" and "The Loom of Fate"
In Teyvat, the "March Goddess" controls the "false heavens" that weave destiny.
In the main storyline quest "We Will Meet Again," Dain and the Traveler intercepted a secret letter from the Abyss Order.
According to the interpretation of the Latin etymology, the secret letter means: Fatae Parcae (the three Fates), Fati Textrix (the weavers of fate).
The Parcae mentioned here are the collective name for the three Fates of ancient Rome, similar to those in Greek and Norse mythology. One of the three sisters was responsible for weaving the thread of life, one for measuring it, and one for cutting it.
The Abyss Order's "Loom of Fate" project, which aims to reshape human destiny, originates from the legend of Parquet, the three Fates.
The stories related to the March Goddess are actually more numerous in Inazuma, especially in Tsurukan. We'll talk about those in the Inazuma chapter.
Regarding how the Goddess of March "weaves" human destiny, there is circumstantial evidence in the game—
The weapon in version 3.0 of Sumeru, "The Abundance of Fullness," contains the following passage:
"Actually, the moon isn't always as round as a pearl..."
That was a very, very long time ago, a very terrible story. Fortunately, it's just a story, not my memory, nor yours.
The moon had once taken the shape of sharp teeth, a grinning face; its light no longer filtered through the leaves to fall on the grass, turning dewdrops into pearls.
Five hundred years ago, Teyvat had a record of the moon waxing and waning, which was considered an ominous sign because it was when the "dark calamity" would occur.
We know that the "Dark Calamity" caused the forces of the Abyss to invade the ley lines of Teyvat—and this anomaly was reflected on the moon of the "False Heaven."
At the same time, we also know that Teyvat has "souls," and those souls return to the ley lines.
Therefore, it can be basically inferred that the goddess of March weaves the fate of mankind by manipulating the "reincarnation" of human souls in the ley lines.
To put it bluntly, they control how a person is reincarnated.
Being born as a peasant and being born into a "prestigious family" are obviously two different levels of difficulty in life, right?
With the disappearance of two March goddesses and the slumber of Heaven's Law, the Destiny System is now in a state of system hosting. The events of five hundred years ago by Kanria dealt a heavy blow to this neglected system.
In this sense, Kanria's "Dark Calamity" can be compared to "tearing up the Book of Life and Death" or "wielding ten thousand banners to slay Yama"—at least in a positive sense, it served that purpose. As for the harm they caused, that's a separate matter.
IV. The Prince of Light and the Deepest Chamber
Why does this book mention the "Prince of Light" and the "Third Adventist," who is likely the Airman?
This story begins in the "Deep Chamber" of Canria.
In version 4.2 of the storyline, there's a scene where Jacob mentions Reiner's sharp critique of Rheindorf:
While analyzing the materials to find a solution, I shared the results with René. Although there was still no response, I felt René would show his usual expression and criticize the Primitive Institute for putting the cart before the horse, neglecting the fundamental principles to delve into trivial techniques, even reversing the order of alchemy for other purposes…
It seems that a Kanriel alchemist named "R" participated in a secret society, and judging from the few fragments of records, they may have achieved great things. But the materials collected are scarce… If René didn't recover, and the Narcissus Cross Society slowly dissipated; if we were all wrong, and there were no behemoths, no apocalypse, will there be people like me now, studying the traces we left behind?
This is what we previously criticized in our study of the original teachings of Hermeticism: Canria reversed the order of alchemy, placing "red" before "gold".
Of course, there was a reason why Rheindorf would teach Aberdo this way; they practiced alchemy to create "original beings," which was different from what Rene pursued.
Our focus is still on the "Secret Institute" mentioned in this passage.
Let me first introduce the "Deep Secret Institute" (the Universitas Magistrorum).
In this word, *Universitas* is Latin, originally meaning a social group. In medieval Europe, it came to be used as a "guild of trades" (an academic guild composed of professionals whose purpose was to impart knowledge and skills), and became one of the prototypes of the modern university. The English word *University* is derived from this word.
Magistrorum is the genitive plural form of the Latin word Magister, meaning "teacher, sorcerer." In the Middle Ages, it referred to a title for someone certified to teach philosophy and literature. Magistrorum can be understood as "of the teacher, of the master." (Remember how René was called "Master" in the Fontaine storyline?)
The "Deep Secret Institute" is a gathering place for all sorts of extraordinary people. As described by Silky, its members are a group of "people who pursue the ultimate in certain aspects," such as Rhinedoth's pursuit of the ultimate in alchemy.
Some Kanriar texts mention the concept of the "Four Pillars of the Kingdom," one of which may refer to the "Deep Chamber."
The name of the institution, “Shenmi Institute,” was first explicitly mentioned in the copywriting of the 4.0 business card, “Achievements and Trajectory.”
But actually, this organization was foreshadowed quite early in the game.
For example, Abedo's card pool is called "Secretum Secretorum". Secrettum Secretorum is Latin for "The Secret of Secrets", which literally means "Secret of Secrets".
This is the title of a medieval natural history treatise (hereinafter referred to as "The Secretary"), written around the tenth century, whose author is unknown. For a long time, it was believed to be a letter from Aristotle to his student Alexander.
The Book of Secretaries covers a wide range of topics, from the ethical problems faced by rulers to health and physiognomy, to plants, minerals, astrology, and alchemy. It encompasses both science and magic, discussing astronomy and geography as well as the five cardinal virtues of human relationships. The Book of Secretaries is one of the most widely read texts of the High Middle Ages (perhaps even the most widely read), translated into multiple languages, and is among the most frequently cited academic papers of its time.
(“You see, a secretary needs to know so much. That’s why we sent Qixing to do business and let the secretary manage the country.” — Gan Yu)
Therefore, besides serving as a research institution, the "Deep Secret Institute" also assumed the responsibility of being the royal think tank of Kanria. This is why we say that the positions of Rhinedoth and the "Prophet" are somewhat similar to those of Kanria's "Grand Tutor." (The "Clown" Piero held a grudge for five hundred years after failing to become Grand Tutor.)
Additionally, when we fight in the Spiral Abyss, we will obtain an artifact box, which is called a "Pryde's Relic Box".
The achievement nameplate for the Spiral Abyss is called "The Deep Mystic". Furthermore, there's a buff in the Spiral Abyss called "Benediction of the Abyss".
—This shows that the word “deep secret” is strongly associated with secrets and the abyss.
We can now understand "Deep Secret Institute" as "Abyss Secret Research Institute".
Finally, let's take a closer look at the description of that 4.0 masterpiece pattern:
The Deep observed that the twin stars (the Traveler Twins) had been captured by the gravity of Teyvat and predicted that their trajectories would intersect again and they would descend together on Canria. This suggests that the arrival of the twins may very well be a product of the Deep's summoning.
Let's recall the plot of "The White Princess and the Six Dwarfs": Why did the "Prince of Light" suddenly appear in "Moonlight Forest", and why did he save the people of "Moonlight Forest"?
—Because the "Prince of Light" is a hero summoned by Canria.
Okay, all the reasoning is now complete.
If you go back and read the chapters I wrote, "The White Princess and the Prince of Light," especially pay attention to the dialogue between the six dwarfs, I believe you will be able to see more.
Based on our current research, Canria's abilities in all aspects have indeed reached the level of "the light of humanity".
Despite the many negative portrayals of Canria in the game, there are also many bright aspects that represent humanity's hope.
The nation of Kanria incorporates many archetypes, such as those from Norse mythology, but based on our current research on these archetypes—
I think the story of Canria will probably be a story of "Qi Tu Su," a hymn to humanity that is a hymn to courage.
Chapter 347 Who betrayed Giliana?
After comforting Sister Giliana, the group returned to Mondstadt.
The Anemo Archon of Mondstadt kept telling jokes to liven up the atmosphere, which cheered up the previously gloomy Ziliana considerably. At least she was able to chat and laugh with Venti for a while.
Yura deliberately slowed down this time and walked alongside Han Fulai—there were many things about what had just happened that she couldn't let go of, especially the fact that she had seen Han Fulai's "wicked smile" again.
"Why are you so sure that this matter is over? Or are you just lying... to comfort her?" Yura asked in a low voice.
She was certain that the encounter with the treasure-hunting gang was accidental, and that Han Fulai was clearly not familiar with Sister Giliana, let alone the members of the gang…
She had also listened in on Sister Gianna's experience, and theoretically, she and Han Fulai had obtained the exact same clues. But no matter how positively and optimistically she tried to think about it, she couldn't reach the same conclusion as Han Fulai.
Yura could certainly see Giliana's predicament, which was why she agreed to let the treasure hunters go.
Just as Sgroch said, he left information about Gianna in their hideout. If Sgroch fails to return, Gianna's information will be exposed to the leader of the treasure-hunting gang, and Gianna will face even more troublesome retaliation.
If the Knights of Favonius were to protect Gianna and her family, they would have to report to the Order why Gianna had gotten involved with the Treasure Thieves, and Gianna's secret would naturally be exposed. Bringing the Treasure Thieves back to the Order would have the same result—the Order would not let Gianna's past crimes go unpunished, and she would likely have to go to jail.
Therefore, letting those members of the treasure-hunting group go was a last resort, essentially a way to "pretend nothing happened."
However, this only temporarily suppressed the impact and did not completely solve the problem.
In Yura's view, there is indeed only one way for Gianna to solve the problem once and for all—to wipe out the entire group of thieves.
As a fellow "sinner," she genuinely sympathized with Gianna and admired her courage to reform.
From the perspective of the Knights of Favonius, she could neither support Giliana in committing murder nor use the Knights' authority to help Giliana silence witnesses. At most, she could only use the pretext of strengthening security to have her guerrilla squads enhance their defenses and prevent the Treasure Thieves from contacting Giliana's family again.
However, she also knew that "guarding against thieves for a thousand days" was not enough.
It's fair to say that Gianna's life doesn't have a "happy ending" that can maintain her current peaceful existence.
At least that's how Yura sees it.
However, Han Fulai dared to confidently tell people that he would give them a "happy ending." What made him so confident?
Faced with Yura's question, Han Fulai once again showed that familiar smile.
"All the things that happened to Miss Gianna were actually orchestrated by someone behind the scenes... Miss Yura, didn't you realize that?"
Yura gritted her teeth. "Yes, Deputy Minister Han. I would appreciate your guidance."
It's quite rare for that arrogant Yura to admit, "You're stronger now."
Han Fulai's smile widened even more.
“The answers are all in Sister Giliana’s experiences. Let me give you a hint.” He held up two fingers. “First, Miss Giliana said that she ran away from the heist, and no one knows where she went. Moreover, in order not to be discovered by her former accomplices, she also changed her body shape, so her appearance should be very different from before.”
"In fact, she did live a peaceful few years, got married in Mondstadt, had a daughter, and became a nun, completely breaking away from her past."
"Why didn't the heist gang find her after all these years, but suddenly bumped into her at this year's 'Badminton Festival'? And according to Gianna, Sgroch even came to her door and threatened her family. Think about it, how could a former accomplice, whom they hadn't seen for years, suddenly recognize Gianna, who has changed so much, and even investigate her family so thoroughly? Is that something a petty thief from a heist gang could do?"
Yura stopped in her tracks.
Thinking along these lines, this extortion case seems to have been unusual from the very beginning.
Han Fulai shook his finger again, "Secondly, how did that 'Tibetan Silver Crow Seal' end up in the gift Rudolf gave to Gianna this morning? Let's rule out Rudolf first. This husband is obviously an honest man who knows nothing about his wife's past and would not scare his wife with such a thing."
"According to Sister Gilliana, Rudolph asked four good friends for help with the gift: Miss Marjorie of 'The Wind of Glory,' Miss Sarah of 'The Deer Hunter,' Mr. Quinn of the fruit stand, and Miss Vera, who frequents church. We can tentatively assume that the suspect who put the raven's mark in the gift is one of these four. Miss Yura, who do you think it is?"
Yura frowned and thought for a moment: "Miss Marjorie is Guild Master Serius's daughter, so it's not surprising that she would have some spoils from the treasure-hunting group... But she's also a representative of Mondstadt's commercial district and one of the Adventurers' Guild's logistical partners... Given her position, it's impossible for her to do something like this for the treasure-hunting group..."
“Miss Sarah and Mr. Quinn are both very honest merchants with no record of violations, and it’s impossible for them to be involved with the heist group…”
"So the most suspicious one is that freelancer, Miss Vera, who's always wandering around various places, right? Could it be that she's an inside agent for the heist group who infiltrated the city?"
