Hagrid's eyes immediately lit up: "Really?"
“Of course,” Vera nodded with a smile, “but before that, we need you to promise us a few things.”
"What is it?" Hagrid asked urgently. "I'd do anything for Hemera!"
Vera glanced out the window and lowered her voice: "First, we need to keep this a secret. No one else, besides the four of us, can know of Hermella's existence."
Hagrid nodded vigorously: "Of course!"
Well, Voldemort probably knew as well, and Dumbledore probably knew as well too, not counting those two devils.
“Secondly,” Vera continued, “I need you to provide some expertise on raising fire dragons.”
Although that place is safe, you can't go there all the time; I need to keep a close eye on the fire dragon's situation.
Hagrid immediately patted his chest and assured him, "Leave it to me! I can give you all my books and animal husbandry notes!"
“Wait, Vera,” Hermione suddenly interjected, “that place you mentioned… is it safe? I mean, really safe from being discovered?”
Vera gave her a reassuring look: "At least it's safer than placing it in Hagrid's cabin or in the Forbidden Forest, and no one will find out it exists."
Hagrid looked like he was about to cry again, but he nodded resolutely: "Okay...alright. As long as Hemera's safety..."
Harley leaned closer curiously and asked, "When can we send Hemera over?"
“Let’s wait until everything is arranged.” Vera shrugged. “Right now, the most important thing is to ensure Hemera’s safe passage through childhood.”
The fire dragon has just been born. If you put it in the hospital at this time without feeding and care, it would be abusing the cub.
We'll have to wait at least a week or two before Hemera can go in on her own, but we'll still have to go in and look after her every day.
But staying with Hagrid meant he was constantly at risk of being ambushed by Quirrell and Voldemort.
As for leaving the magic scroll with Hagrid… Vera didn’t think it was a good idea.
“We need a transition plan,” she said after thinking for a moment. “Hagrid, can you guarantee that you will stay by Hemera's side at all times for the next week?”
Hagrid nodded vigorously, his eyes shining with determination: "I can do it! At worst, I'll keep it in a pocket close to my body wherever I go, and take it with me everywhere!"
Hermione frowned. "But Hagrid, you still have to patrol the Forbidden Forest, it's very dangerous there..."
“The Forbidden Forest is actually safer for it.” Vera shook her head. “There is no more reliable protection than Hagrid’s side.”
Don't underestimate a half-giant! As long as Hemera is within his protection zone, it's hard for her to get into trouble.
Moreover, she will remain vigilant throughout the coming week and be ready to leave the castle to provide support at any time.
She has to stay connected to the castle all the time, which puts a lot of pressure on her.
But this is a necessary sacrifice.
Hemera seemed to sense the change in atmosphere, wriggling uneasily in Vera's palm and emitting soft whimpers.
Vera gently stroked its head: "Don't worry, little guy. You'll have a new home soon."
As she spoke, she gently picked up the little dragon, and Hermella immediately nuzzled her fingers affectionately.
“It really likes you,” Hagrid said enviously.
Vera smiled slightly: "It will like you too, Hagrid, it just needs a little time."
She carefully handed Hemera to Hagrid. The little dragon was initially somewhat resistant, but under Vera's reassurance, it eventually curled up obediently in Hagrid's large palm.
“Remember,” Vera looked at Hagrid seriously, “no matter what happens, never let Hermera out of your sight.”
Hagrid nodded solemnly: "I swear."
Hermione looked at Vera, who was looking very serious, with some doubt. Although she found it strange, she did not ask Hagrid about it.
And so they lingered there for a while longer, watching Hermella gradually adapt to her new environment under Hagrid's care, feeding her one more time, before bidding farewell to Hagrid and leaving the hut.
“Vera,” Harry asked eagerly as soon as they left the cabin, “where is that safe place you were talking about?”
Vera smiled mysteriously: "I will take you to see it when the time is right."
Harley pouted: "You're keeping us in suspense again."
“This is for safety’s sake.” Vera pushed her wheelchair forward. “The fewer people who know, the better.”
Hermione nodded thoughtfully. "That makes sense. But..."
She looked at Vera hesitantly; something had been off to her ever since.
Why did Vera give her a sense of tension, as if facing a formidable enemy, and why did she deliberately conceal this emotion, not wanting them to know?
“Vera,” Hermione whispered, “are you worried about something? Besides legal issues?”
Vera paused, looking somewhat helpless.
It's really hard to keep anything a secret when you're with Hermione.
So, after a brief silence, she could only resort to the mysterious riddle she had mentioned earlier and start rambling: "I just... have a bad feeling."
Harley immediately tensed up: "You have another premonition?"
Vera said she had a premonition last time, and then they encountered a troll!
Vera chuckled and gently patted Harley's hand. "Don't be nervous, it's just a feeling. But better safe than sorry, right?"
Hermione nodded in agreement: "In any case, it's always good to be cautious."
The three of them returned to the castle along the path. Sunlight shone through the clouds onto the grass, and a gentle breeze carried the fragrance of flowers.
After that day, Harley and Hermione soon noticed that Vera's complexion was starting to worsen again.
Not only do he have faint bluish-black eyes, but he also looks listless and often loses focus when he is in class or talking.
Harley and Hermione were so frightened that they didn't even listen to her explanations. After this continued for a few days, they simply took her to the school hospital.
Mrs. Pomfrey gave Vera a thorough examination, then her usually gentle brow furrowed.
“Child, what are you worried about?” she asked softly, her fingers gently resting on Vera’s wrist. “Your magic is being overused, and your mind is constantly under high tension.”
Ha and the other two, who had been granted permission to stay because they had visited so many times, panicked upon hearing this.
Harley instinctively tightened her grip on her hand.
Vera could only manage a weak smile: "I'm fine, it's probably just that I've been under a lot of academic pressure lately."
In fact, maintaining constant contact with the castle did take a lot of her energy, and she would be awakened by the slightest sound every night when she was trying to rest.
The result is that she looks like she's about to faint at any moment.
But she had no choice in order to keep an eye on Quirrell and protect Hermella.
Mrs. Pomfrey shook her head in disapproval; clearly, she didn't believe that the intensity of first-year studies alone could have turned a student into this state.
She turned around and took a bottle of medicine from the medicine cabinet: "You need to rest well. This is a sedative. Take one spoonful before bed every night."
“We’ll keep an eye on her,” Hermione said earnestly, taking the small medicine bottle.
Harley nodded repeatedly, "That's right! We'll take good care of her!"
Mrs. Pomfrey nodded in satisfaction, gave a few more instructions, and then let them leave.
Back in the dorm, Harley and Hermione escorted Vera from either side, afraid she would sneak off to study again.
“Starting today,” Hermione said sternly, “you cannot study for more than three hours a day.”
Harley added, "And you have to go to bed on time! We'll keep an eye on you!"
Vera looked at the two little ones, who seemed to be facing a formidable enemy, with a mix of amusement and exasperation: "Aren't you two overreacting?"
"That's no exaggeration!" Hermione exclaimed, hands on her hips. "Do you know how terrible you look? You look like you've been doing homework for three days and three nights without sleep!"
Harley laughed at the analogy, but quickly straightened up again: "Hermione's right. Vera, you need to get some rest."
Looking at the two of them with a bit of helplessness, Vera felt the familiar feeling of being controlled again, which was strange but also somewhat heartwarming.
When she occasionally puts Harley and Hermione in her place, do they feel the same way?
“…Okay.” The moment Vera nodded in agreement, she realized that she would probably be under the control of these two for the rest of her school years.
Hmm, perhaps her condition will improve once her leg heals?
She thought to herself, her eyes crinkling into a smile, and obediently lay down under their gaze: "Is this alright now?"
There's still a while before curfew, so theoretically she can sleep a little longer.
“Of course not.” Harley opened the bedside table and took out a bottle that was already more than half full. “And a massage before bed.”
"A calming potion is also essential." Hermione smiled and took out the new medicine bottle for today.
Vera: ...
Somewhat resigned, she grabbed the blanket and pulled it over her head: "Come on, no need to say more."
Since I've already been pressed so many times, one more time won't make a difference.
Harley and Hermione exchanged a glance, and after seeing the triumphant look in each other's eyes, they each got busy with their own tasks.
Vera lay on the bed, feeling Harry's gentle massage, and drank a sip of the calming potion Hermione handed her.
The bitter taste of the medicine spread across the tip of the tongue, yet brought a strange sense of calm.
"Is this alright now?" She looked up with difficulty at the two girls who had serious expressions.
Hermione checked the markings on the medicine bottle and nodded in satisfaction: "The dosage is just right. Now close your eyes and get some rest."
Harley tucked her in: "We'll stay with you. Just call us if you need anything."
Vera wanted to say that she didn't need to be taken care of like this, but the warm bed and the effects of the medicine had already begun to take hold.
Her eyelids grew heavy, and her consciousness gradually faded.
Before she fell into a deep sleep, the last thing she saw was Harley and Hermione sitting on the edge of the bed, talking quietly.
Honestly, how could she listen to them so easily?
Chapter 123 The Dragon Thief Arrives
She drifted off to sleep in the middle of the night, a dreamless and peaceful sleep thanks to the medication. But halfway through her sleep, Vera was jolted awake by a sudden wave of panic.
She suddenly opened her eyes and saw that the sky outside the window was still dark, and the dormitory was gloomy. She could only make out her surroundings with the help of the faint moonlight.
She carefully sat up and looked at the bed opposite her—Harley and Hermione were both fast asleep and had not been awakened by her movements.
Vera lowered her eyes, her fingers unconsciously touching her chest. The sudden palpitation still lingered in her heart, as if something bad was about to happen.
“Knox?” she called softly, but her cat wasn’t in the room.
Suddenly, Vera frowned, mustered her strength, and activated the magic circuit's connection to the castle.
Almost instantly, a strong warning signal surged through her nerves like an electric current; the castle was warning her—
A thick black mist flowed out of the castle and spread towards Hagrid's Hut!
Vera's heart raced instantly. She quickly rolled out of bed, her simulated legs landing silently on the ground with the help of magic. Her fingers lightly touched the wall, and the castle's feedback became even clearer.
She sensed it; Quirrell had left his office and was preparing to cross the castle perimeter towards Hagrid's cabin!
"Damn it!" She bit her lower lip, quickly changed into her outer robe, and tucked her wand into her waistband.
Just then, Knox, who was sitting by the bed, suddenly appeared from the darkness, lightly jumped onto her shoulder, and his tail gently brushed against her cheek.
"Where did you go just now?" Vera asked in a low voice, while quickly tidying up her equipment.
Knox didn't answer, but nuzzled her chin with his head and looked out the window.
Vera looked in the direction it pointed and saw a dark shadow moving vaguely at the edge of the forbidden forest in the distance.
“I have to get ahead of him.” She said, then hesitated for a moment and glanced back at the sleeping Harley and Hermione.
At times like these, it's best not to wake them.
She gently pushed open the window, and a chilly night wind rushed in. Vera put on her invisibility cloak and leaped out of the window.
Knox followed closely behind her, his silver-gray figure almost blending into the night under the moonlight.
With her previous experience, Vera's movements became more skillful this time. She landed on the rooftop with ease, moved quickly along the outer perimeter of the castle, and leaped and darted between the buildings.
She had to get to Hagrid's cabin before Quirrell to warn him of the impending danger.
As it turns out, taking a shortcut is indeed much faster.
When Vera arrived at Hagrid's cottage, it was still peaceful and serene, with faint candlelight filtering through the windows.
She cautiously approached the window and peered inside through the glass.
