"I'm a little hungry, let's have one," Cheng Fei said after thinking for a moment, his tone casual.
"Huh? Okay." Lin Xuanqi was stunned for a moment, then quickly took the insulated bag out of the drawer, opened the plastic bag inside separately and placed it in front of him, her movements like those of a waiter at the high-end restaurant they had frequented many times.
The boy casually grabbed one from inside, looked out the window, and ate it with a blank expression.
"Honey, how is it? Is it delicious?" Lin Xuanqi rested her chin on her hands, blinked at him, and spoke in a light tone, regaining the pleasant smile that had appeared on her lips before.
"So-so." Cheng Fei shook his head, still thinking that the roadside stall he ate at last year's Lantern Festival tasted better.
"Let me try it." The girl also took a taiyaki, took a bite, chewed it, and nodded seriously. "It's just okay. Next time we'll go and get something better."
"Go by yourself, nobody here wants to go with you next time." With the idea of not wasting food, the boy quickly finished off the taiyaki in his hand.
"Then I'll go buy some and bring it back for my husband to try." Lin Xuanqi nodded again, looking completely unconcerned.
The boy glanced at her, then looked at the taiyaki on the table, suspiciously asking, "Did you really buy this from that electronics store? It arrived so quickly?"
Logically speaking, even if he got on the bus immediately after leaving the school, there wouldn't be enough time. He just said it casually, thinking that Lin Xuanqi wouldn't pay attention in class anyway, so it wouldn't matter if she was late because of this. He didn't expect her to actually buy it before class.
"Yeah, I had someone go ahead and prepare, and I also had the driver run a red light to take me back. On the way back, he drove straight to the teaching building, and that's how I barely made it." The girl's tone was nonchalant.
“You.” The boy stared at her, hesitating.
"What's wrong with me? My husband didn't say I couldn't do this, did he?" The haughty young woman lowered her eyes meekly.
"Fine, whatever makes you happy." The boy shook his head helplessly.
Anyway, doing this kind of thing in Academy City wouldn't have any consequences for Lin Xuanqi.
"Oh right, I also took photos. I'll send them to you if you don't believe me, honey." The girl suddenly remembered something and took out her phone.
"No need to give them any more, you can eat the rest yourself." The boy pushed the remaining taiyaki towards her.
Lin Xuanqi opened her mouth, as if she wanted to say something, when the class bell rang.
Mr. Zhang, the Chinese language teacher, walked into the classroom with a water cup in his hand.
The girl thought for a moment, then silently took the taiyaki and turned back without saying a word.
In the drowsy atmosphere, a class period quietly passed.
As soon as the bell rang, Lin Xuanqi skillfully turned the phone over, holding it with a smile, and said, "Honey, I'll send you some photos."
“I already said I don’t need it,” Cheng Fei said without hesitation.
"No, my husband ordered me to take these photos, I have to see them." Lin Xuanqi said stubbornly.
"Tsk, then give it to me." The boy held out his hand.
"No, that won't work either. We've already broken up. You can't look at my phone. I have to send it to you first." The arrogant girl shrank back again, then her eyes lit up with a mischievous, eager look. "So we have to add each other on WeChat first."
The boy understood what she meant and said irritably, "Add your head my foot, don't dream about it."
“This is an order from my husband, I have to do it.” The girl grabbed his arm and stared straight at him.
"Lin Xuanqi, are you never going to stop?" The boy stared at her.
There was a moment of deathly silence between them.
The mischievous smile on the girl's face vanished, her eyelashes trembled, and her expression turned sorrowful. She slowly let go of her hand, turned back, and lay face down on the table, as if all her strength had been drained away. She didn't move, but placed one hand on her leg, doing something unknown.
Cheng Fei watched her retreating figure, thought for a moment, but then said nothing and went about his own business.
A minute later, a pretty girl with twin ponytails walked into Class 6 through the back door. Her usually warm and smiling face was expressionless, drawing curious glances from the students who knew her.
This well-behaved girl went straight to the corner by the window, stretched out her hand to the boy sitting there, and said in an unquestionable tone, "You scumbag, give me your phone."
"What's wrong with Master Ye?" Cheng Fei glanced at Lin Xuanqi, who was still standing in front of him, and asked in confusion.
"Give me your phone right now." The obedient girl stomped her foot, a hint of grievance in her dark eyes that only appeared when the two of them were alone.
"Okay." The boy hesitated for a moment, then did as instructed.
Ye Shuang took the phone, unlocked it with the password, quickly tapped the screen a few times, and then handed it back to him.
"Okay, you're not allowed to delete it, or I'll..." The obedient girl glared at him quietly, left those words, and walked away as quickly as she had come.
Cheng Fei picked up his phone and found it was on the WeChat chat interface, showing a friend he had just added.
Then, a photo popped up, showing a familiar hand holding an insulated bag and pointing it at the sign of the taiyaki shop in the electronics district, as if to prove something.
The boy frowned.
The haughty girl who had been lying in the front seat turned around again, leaning on the edge of his desk, her rosy lips slightly pursed, staring at him nonchalantly. Only upon close inspection could one detect a barely perceptible hint of excitement on her charming face.
"What's the point?" Cheng Fei asked coldly, his voice devoid of emotion.
"It means I like you," Lin Xuanqi said softly, tilting her head and revealing a smug smile.
The boy casually picked up his phone.
"If you delete me, Xiaoshuang will be sad. You don't want her to be sad, do you?" The arrogant girl quickly straightened up to look.
The boy's finger hovered over the delete friend button. After a second of silence, he swiped the screen upwards and tapped an input box.
Lin Xuanqi cautiously tilted her head to look, quickly glancing at the boy's face, and asked curiously, "What will you save my name for, honey?"
The boy ignored her and silently typed text in the box.
"Netizen Xiao Z"
After saving, I put my phone away.
"Shen Xi is my online friend A, and I'm my online friend Z." The girl murmured to herself, then realized something, her eyes widening in disbelief, "So I'm the same as her?"
"Excuse me, 'a' means first place and 'z' means last place." The boy's indifferent expression remained unchanged.
"Oh." The light in the girl's eyes faded, and she lay back on the table, muttering to herself, "That's not bad either. You said I was ranked last, which means you care about me."
"I'd better just delete it." The boy's eyelids twitched, and he took a deep breath to pick up his phone.
"Honey, I was wrong!" The girl quickly grabbed his arm.
The boy tried to shake her off, but failed. He used his sharp gaze to make the girl let go on her own, then pinched his brow and sighed.
Then, under Lin Xuanqi's cautious gaze, he lowered his head and continued with his own business, ignoring her.
Seeing this, the arrogant girl secretly breathed a sigh of relief, then leaned down on his desk and stared straight at him, a lingering smile on her lips, as if the brief time they spent together during break was already enough to satisfy her.
……
On Tuesday night, it rained all night in Academy City, and the temperature plummeted the next day. The chilly air made people realize that another summer in their lives had become a memory that would never return.
On Wednesday morning, like all the other students around them, Shen Xi and Nagasaki Asuna walked into the school gate side by side with umbrellas.
The cool, aloof girl's phone vibrated, prompting her to open WeChat and see a message from a friend with a grouper-shaped profile picture.
"Ms. Shen, I'd like to participate in club activities this afternoon."
"Heh, what's gotten into Cheng Feiyu this time?"
"A day apart feels like three autumns; we haven't seen each other for six whole years. Don't you miss me?"
"I really want to, but I'll reluctantly agree."
"Could you please answer my question seriously first, or is it that the Earth orbiting its star six times is a trivial matter to the Protoss Queen?"
"It's full of nonsense and very noisy."
"Sorry, I disturbed Ms. Shen's eyes. See you this afternoon."
The expressionless, aloof girl put away her phone, a barely perceptible smile curving her lips before quickly disappearing.
"Hey, why are you suddenly so happy?" Nagasaki Asuna turned to look at her, her eyes widening slightly.
"Shut up." He narrowed his eyes again, showing no politeness whatsoever.
Lunch break.
"Ruan Jingyi, she's so annoying." Zhou Han sat in her seat, stirring the remaining pearls in her milk tea with a straw, making soft noises. Her round eyes were fixed on the blackboard that the class representative had wiped clean. Her tone was flat. "Why won't she give up? She's always bothering Cheng Fei. It's so annoying."
The quiet girl sitting next to me tilted her head and glanced out of the corner of her eye at the corner of the classroom near the window.
Lin Xuanqi lay down in front of Cheng Fei as usual, a smile playing on her lips, and said softly, "By the way, honey, the weather forecast says it's going to get colder these next few days, remember to wear more clothes."
Under the table, the girl gently lifted one foot, her calf, encased in thin black pantyhose, swaying slightly.
"You're being noisy." The boy, engrossed in his writing, didn't even look up.
"Oh." The haughty girl responded obediently, then thought for a moment and continued, "Honey, why didn't you reply to my 'Good Evening' and 'Good Morning' messages?"
The boy looked up at her, his brows furrowed slightly.
“Of course, if my husband doesn’t want to come back, he doesn’t have to. I don’t care,” the girl quickly added.
The boy suddenly pulled a test paper from the drawer, slammed it in front of her, and said in an unquestionable tone, "Do this for me."
Lin Xuanqi was stunned for a moment, then looked at the test paper and then at him.
"These are today's orders. Any problems? Either do them now, or stop bothering me." The boy said impatiently.
"Okay, I'll do it right away." The girl straightened up, then her eyes lit up. "But if I don't know how, can you teach me, honey?"
"Did you get your ranking by having the teacher change your score?" the boy asked, puzzled.
951. Shen Xi wants to hear an explanation.
“She’s only ranked in the teens at most, unlike my husband who’s always first in the grade. It’s normal for her to have questions she doesn’t know.” Lin Xuanqi tilted her head down, revealing a submissive and pitiful expression.
"Tsk, then I really won't ask again. Don't blame me for being impolite if you ask any more basic questions." Cheng Fei shook his head, giving up on arguing with her.
"Okay, my husband is so good to me." Lin Xuanqi cheered up, took out a draft paper and pen, and began to write her test paper on the boy's desk.
"Can't you just turn around?" The boy frowned slightly.
"It's easier to ask questions this way, is it really not allowed?" The haughty girl tilted her head again, her charming little face showing a docile obedience.
"No, turn around." The boy said, emphasizing each word.
"Oh." The girl gently bit her rosy lips and obediently turned back to her desk.
The air between them was silent for a few minutes.
The girl turned back, pointed to a spot on the test paper, and asked with a hint of eagerness, "Honey, if I say I don't know how to do this question, do you think that's reasonable?"
"Is this something I decide based on whether I think it's reasonable or not? Don't you know whether you can do it yourself?" The boy was speechless.
"Oh." The girl obediently turned back.
Another minute passed.
"Honey, I don't think I can do this question." The girl turned back, pointing at the test paper and scrutinizing the boy's expression, still eager to try.
"You're like a headless chicken, Lin Xuanqi. If you keep talking nonsense, you can do it all yourself." The boy said irritably.
"I was wrong, honey, don't be angry." The girl lowered her head without hesitation, turned back to pick up her pen, glanced behind her, and a sly and smug smile appeared on her lips.
The two people in the corner by the window in the classroom probably spent their lunch break in this kind of situation.
……
As the bell rang for the end of the last get out of class in the afternoon, Cheng Fei packed up his things and left the classroom, watching Lin Xuanqi watch him leave as if nothing had happened.
The wisteria in the long corridor had been rained on all night and was shedding leaves along with the ginkgo trees in the courtyard. A boy walking by with his hands in his pockets caught sight of this scene and stopped in his tracks. He came to the ginkgo tree and, with an incredibly light and precise movement, caught a falling golden leaf, causing a girl who was watching him to cover her mouth.
The boy held the leaf in his hand, examined it, and confirmed that its shape and color were perfect. He carefully dried the water off his clothes, continued walking, climbed to the rooftop of the club activity building, and pushed open the only door.
A cool, aloof girl with long, dark hair sat alone on a steel tube chair, her small face expressionless with her eyes lowered, just like countless times before.
The only difference was that the pair of slender, snow-white legs under the table were encased in black over-the-knee socks. From the long, curved calves to the small, rounded ankles, and then to the delicate uniform shoes, everything was blended into an immaculate black, making one want to understand the indescribable beauty emanating from them, unable to look away.
“Teacher Shen, I knew it.” Cheng Fei came up to her, placed the ginkgo leaf between the pages of her book, and looked down at her.
"Know what?" The girl stared at the familiar leaf, her pure, dark eyes blinking. She looked up at him again, puzzled.
"Why won't you wear white? You know I like it." The boy moved a steel pipe chair next to her and sat down, taking out various documents and starting to read.
The girl glanced at the black over-the-knee socks on her legs, her delicate eyebrows furrowed slightly, and her expression turned disgusted. "Hopeless. You can go find your vixen if you like something. Anyway, she's the one who's most willing to satisfy your disgusting fetishes."
"That's possible, but Nana is a different story. In my opinion, Teacher Shen is irreplaceable," the boy said with certainty.
"Sweet talk is fine, but if you really think you're irreplaceable, then look at him carefully. I'm here to satisfy you out of kindness, so stop being so picky." The girl kicked him lightly with her uniform shoe.
