Guang'an Street, washed by the rain, looked much the same as usual. The slightly cool air carried a fresh scent, and breathing it felt like a great relief.
He walked across the street to the upscale apartment building, holding an umbrella, and went up to the 36th floor, opening the familiar door.
The house was quiet, with small canvas shoes and sneakers neatly arranged in the entryway. The soles of the shoes were slightly wet but still spotless, making them an indescribably pleasing sight.
A cool, aloof girl with long, dark hair stood in the kitchen, holding a cup and staring expressionlessly at the kettle at the water bar, which was slowly boiling.
Hearing footsteps behind her, she turned around, her delicate brows furrowing slightly, her small face showing suspicion at seeing a rat that had been hiding its head and tail appearing at an inopportune time.
Cheng Fei opened his wet umbrella on the balcony, put his hands in his pockets, and walked up to the aloof girl who was observing him. He leaned closer to look at that cold little face that was familiar in every detail but he could never get tired of looking at.
Shen Xi stood motionless, staring at him and speaking coldly, "What is Cheng Feiyu doing swimming over here all of a sudden?"
"I missed you, so I came." The boy smiled.
"Fine, I'll let you continue with your sweet talk." The girl met his gaze, then subtly looked away.
"Even if it's just sweet talk, you don't like it?" The boy's smile remained unchanged.
"Stop spouting ridiculous fantasies. What is it?" The girl glared at him, becoming impatient.
The boy didn't answer immediately. His gaze shifted, first observing her small face with features as delicate and translucent as fragile glass, then sweeping over her flat chest, and finally landing on her slender, long, and beautiful snow-white legs beneath her skirt, his admiration undisguised.
The girl's brows furrowed, and she shivered with a chill. She covered her chest with her hands and took a half step back, her expression turning disgusted and wary. "Cheng Feiyu swam all the way here just for this? I've told you countless times, don't stare at me with those filthy, delusional eyes. It's really disgusting."
"Shen Xi, why are you so cute?" the boy exclaimed, looking at her earnest expression.
"Nonsense, I told you not to...?!" The girl's increasingly wary voice abruptly stopped.
The boy pulled her slender, frail body into his arms and held her tightly, just like the first time he did it a long time ago.
The girl was forced to bury her face in the boy's chest. She smelled the familiar scent, and her body tensed up at first, then slowly relaxed, letting him use his strength as if to merge the two of them into one.
"Shen Xi, I've broken up with you." Cheng Fei leaned close to her ear, which was hidden in her thick hair, closer than ever before, and smelled an alluring, faint fragrance.
As the words fell casually, out of the boy's sight, the girl's pupils contracted, and her pure, ink-black eyes froze.
"Trash, it's one thing to suddenly come and take advantage of me, I'm used to it anyway, but to dare to spout nonsense really makes me angry." The girl gritted her teeth and kicked him, her tone becoming annoyed.
"This time it's for real, Shen Xi. I've broken up with Lin Xuanqi. I've kept my promise." The young man gently stroked the back of her head and spine, pressing their bodies tightly together so they could clearly feel each other's heartbeats.
The girl in his arms fell silent.
A moment later, she broke free from his embrace, looked up at the boy's face, and frowned.
In the silence, the two looked at each other for a moment.
"Don't believe me? I called you by your name." The boy's smile turned to helplessness.
Shen Xi's long eyelashes trembled slightly. She took a deep breath, her small hand gripping the boy's arm tightening slowly. Her eyes lowered, and her voice trembled almost imperceptibly, "What did the man surnamed Lin say?"
"That kind of thing doesn't matter, the important thing is that I kept my promise." The boy looked into her eyes.
The girl took another deep breath, slowly buried her face in his chest, climbed up his back with her small hands, hugged him tightly, stood on tiptoe, and remained silent.
Where he couldn't see, her stubborn, delicate pink lips twitched slightly, silently curving into a smile.
"Teacher Shen?" The boy looked down at her.
"As expected of a stupid aquatic mammal..." the girl suddenly chuckled, her voice muffled as she buried her face in her hands.
"What do you mean?" the boy asked, puzzled.
"How could anyone in the world really give up the chance to stay by the side of someone like Lin and live off him for the rest of their life just because of a promise..." The girl didn't even look up, her cold laugh sounding like she'd heard a funny joke.
The boy opened his mouth.
“He just beckons and follows me around obediently. Cheng Feiyu, who thinks he’s so cunning, is nothing more than this…” The girl’s small hand kept moving on his back, as if she were looking at an interesting comic, trying her best not to laugh out loud.
The boy hesitated, as if he wanted to say something but then stopped.
"Cheng Feiyu likes me that much, and is willing to be my servant? Well, I've told you before that this is just how I am. She dared to argue with me back then, but now she's obedient and listens to me..." The girl's tone was more smug than ever before, as if she were a completely different person.
The boy looked at the girl who had buried her face in his chest and was talking incessantly to herself, and hesitated for a moment, "Teacher Shen, you're happy, right?"
"Nonsense, it's just that Cheng Feiyu kept her promise and broke up with the man surnamed Lin. It was expected, there's nothing to be happy about..." The girl's tone was cold and indifferent, but halfway through her sentence, a clear and melodious laugh like a silver bell flashed by.
"Shen Xi, you're clearly smiling, aren't you?" The young man was filled with doubt and quickly pulled her out of his arms, pressing down on her small shoulders to examine her closely.
The girl covered the lower half of her face with her small hands, her eyes narrowed as if glaring at him, and said coldly and without any politeness, "No one is laughing here. Has Cheng Feiyu finally gone mad and started hallucinating?"
"Why are you covering your face if you're not laughing?" The boy stared into her eyes and felt that even when she was glaring at someone, the girl's gaze was completely different from usual.
His eyes were as black as ink, and his eyebrows were curved, showing none of his usual fierce demeanor.
"What's it to you? Mind your own business!" The girl kept covering the lower half of her face, turning her head to the side to stare at the range hood, as if there was something on it that caught her attention.
"Teacher Shen, if you're happy, there's nothing wrong with just laughing out loud. What you're doing is too weird." The boy was shocked by her desperate attempt to hide her emotions.
"No one here is happy to hear this, so why is Cheng Feiyu still daydreaming?" The girl covered her face and glared at him again, her feigned indifference tinged with a lighthearted laugh, making one want to peek at the expression hidden beneath her small hand. "Don't think that breaking up with that Lin guy will solve anything. Anyway, I've seen through Cheng Feiyu's fickle nature now!"
"Sweetie, stop pretending, okay?" The boy tried to pull her hands away from her face.
"Don't come any closer! You're disgusting, filthy, and vile!" The girl leaned back to avoid him, her curses completely different from usual, with a mischievous, cowardly air, as she desperately covered the lower half of her face. "You're so shameless, touching high school girls inappropriately, your brain is filled with disgusting fantasies all day long, you're hopeless, Cheng Feiyu!"
"Sweetie, can I see you smile just once? I'm begging you, just once." The boy grabbed her arm, his tone becoming urgent.
“No one’s laughing here! Why can’t Cheng Feiyu understand?” The girl glared at him fiercely, her expression deliberately menacing.
"Why are you covering your mouth if you're not laughing? What are you afraid of?" the boy questioned, staring at her.
"I can do whatever I want, does Cheng Feiyu have a problem with that?" The girl raised her chin defiantly, her small hand still firmly on her face.
"No objection, but if I had known it would turn out like this, I wouldn't have broken up. I might as well just tell Lin Xuanqi that I was just joking, and she probably wouldn't mind." The boy shook his head and sighed, then took out his phone with an air of seriousness.
"Trash, how dare you?!" The girl's eyes changed, and she glared at him with a light gritted clenched teeth.
"Then let me see you smile, thank you. This is the only request I'll ever make in my life." The boy put his phone away and stared into her eyes.
The girl turned her face away, her eyes flickering. After a moment of silence, she said in a muffled voice, "No one will laugh if I tell you this."
"What's the point of hiding that you're not laughing? Are you crying?" The boy shrugged.
"..." The girl stared at the wall and fell silent again, as if some kind of world problem was written on it.
"Teacher Shen? Is she asleep?" The boy peeked into her field of vision.
"Trash, if you didn't laugh, you didn't laugh. It's ridiculous. Get this straight, I'm not some low-level creature like you. I don't make those meaningless, stupid faces all the time."
As soon as she finished speaking, the girl raised her chin as if to prove something, took a deep breath, and lowered her small hands that had been covering her face.
Cheng Fei looked at it carefully.
That delicate and pretty face still exuded a captivating charm. She stared at him expressionlessly, her pure, dark eyes seeming to hold a condescending disdain, completely devoid of the expected smile.
"How is it? Are you satisfied?" The girl raised her face defiantly.
The boy hesitated for a moment, then suddenly grabbed her wrists.
"Trash, what do you want? I'm warning you, if you dare to mess around, don't blame me for being impolite." The girl's eyes flickered, but she glared at him defiantly.
The boy met her gaze and tried to say, "Shen Xi, I've broken up with you."
The girl's face was tense, and she remained silent.
"I kept my promise and broke up with Lin Xuanqi," the boy continued.
The girl remained motionless, her lips twitching almost imperceptibly.
The boy raised an eyebrow. "I broke up with Lin Xuanqi as you asked?"
The girl's lips twitched again, this time a little more, before quickly tightening, revealing a cold indifference in her confrontation with him.
"I got her and then dumped her, are you satisfied now?"
"Pfft..." The girl made a strange soft sound, quickly pursed her lips, and her fair and soft cheeks puffed up like an inflated balloon, making her look cuter than ever before.
"I don't need to get entangled with her anymore, can we start over?"
As soon as she finished speaking, a second later, Shen Xi's twitching lips could no longer be suppressed and she could no longer suppress her smile. A clear and melodious laugh, like the sound of silver bells, escaped her throat. Her eyes narrowed slightly, and for the first time since the two of them met, her beautiful face showed a genuine and happy smile.
Before the boy could see clearly, the girl broke free from her grip and covered the lower half of her face again, causing everything to disappear like a fleeting dream.
880. Therefore, Shen Xi will not let Cheng Fei down.
Shen Xi covered the lower half of her face, leaving only her eyes exposed. Her gaze briefly met Cheng Fei's before shifting away, like a small animal peeking out of a cave, making it impossible to guess her thoughts.
"Sweetie, you really won't let me see?" The boy looked at her with his hands in his pockets, his tone filled with doting helplessness.
The girl remained silent, her eyes flickering as she stared elsewhere.
The sound of rain coming from outside made the atmosphere inside the house even more tranquil, and time passed by second by second.
After a moment of silence, Shen Xi slowly raised her head, met the boy's gaze, and then looked away. She then took a step forward, buried her face deeply in his chest, climbed up his back with her small hands, hugged him tightly, and silently tiptoed with her slipper-clad feet, transferring all her weight to him so that the boy could feel her slender silhouette.
"Greedy trash." The girl said softly and gently, kicking him with barely threatening force. "Just so you know, the weekly meeting has already passed. Daring to lay a hand on me today is practically a crime..."
"So?" The boy looked down; her face was buried and hidden by her thick sideburns, making it impossible to see her expression.
“However, given that you kept your promise and fulfilled the agreement, I…” The girl’s voice was barely audible.
"Teacher Shen, is the volume too low?" the boy smiled.
The girl took a deep breath, and you could feel her flat chest heaving dramatically.
Then, Shen Xi raised her head, her pure, dark eyes first darting left and right before finally meeting his gaze. Her tight little face held a certain determination as she looked at him and softly said, "I'm very happy, Cheng Fei."
The boy looked at her, a smile playing on his lips. "And then?"
The girl subconsciously looked up at him, her brows furrowing slightly as she stared back, as if forcing herself to look him in the eye, or perhaps re-examining him. Her tone was earnest, "Although from the moment we met, you've always been a smooth talker, fickle, two-faced, hypocritical, opportunistic, and treacherous..."
The boy opened his mouth.
The girl paused, biting her lip as if suppressing the urge to scold him, "In short, he acts like someone who is completely untrustworthy."
Cheng Fei scratched his head, smiling without a hint of guilt, "Teacher Shen must have had a hard time dealing with someone like me."
Shen Xi ignored him and continued to ponder, "However, after spending this year together, I've gradually come to understand that you're someone who seems terrible on the surface, and is indeed terrible deep down..."
"Is it really that bad?" the boy couldn't help but interrupt.
"Shut up and let me finish." The girl glared at him, her brows furrowed, as if she were explaining some serious academic issue. "Despite being terrible in every way, there are still some rotten people who have their merits."
After she finished speaking, she closed her mouth, her thoughtful expression resembling that of someone conceiving the next paragraph of an essay.
The boy mourned, "Teacher Shen, could you elaborate on the commendable aspects? I don't mean anything by it, I'm just curious because you've rarely been so frank."
Shen Xi paused for a second, then spoke reluctantly, "Your merits are: firstly, you're not without principles; I can sense that you have your own principles and bottom line, although that bottom line is outrageously low. Secondly, you keep your promises; you can do what you promise me, although you have no sense of responsibility for things you don't promise. Thirdly, you repay kindness; you haven't let me down on important matters, although you often do things that are sneaky and infuriating. Fourthly, you're fairly intelligent and patient enough to help me with various tasks, although you're far from being as good as me. Fifthly, you know when to stop and won't succumb to those ugly desires and force me, although..."
"Stop!" The boy raised his voice, his expression complicated. "I know you think I have a lot of good points, but you really don't need to add a 'although' to every single one of them."
The girl stared at him with displeasure, thought for a moment, and continued, "Especially now that you've actually fulfilled your promise to break up with that Lin guy, it proves that what you said back then was true. Even if you got involved with that vixen and Ye Shuang along the way, I'm somewhat willing to believe that you had no choice but to accept it and didn't want to let them down. Besides, you didn't break the promise you made to me when you were entangled with that vixen, so you weren't completely infatuated with her. I remember all of these things, and I can feel your sincerity. I also want to give you a corresponding response, so..."
"So you've decided to start dating me again?" The boy was overjoyed.
"Don't dream about it." The girl said without hesitation.
"..." The boy pursed his lips.
“So even though today isn’t a regular meeting, and we didn’t go out, and we’re just friends, I’ll allow it for now.” The girl stared at him expressionlessly, slowly buried her face in his chest, hugged him tightly with both arms, stood on tiptoe, and said in a barely perceptible tremor, “I allow you to do whatever you want to me.”
"Does 'doing whatever you want' mean...?" The boy was getting restless.
"No, stop with your ridiculous fantasies." The girl seemed to sense something and kicked him.
"So that means kissing is allowed?"
"That won't work either." The girl didn't even look up, her voice cold and devoid of any emotion.
"Teacher Shen, you've written such a long essay, but it still doesn't work out?" the boy asked hesitantly.
“Cheng Feiyu is beyond saving…” Shen Xi raised her head and stared at him, her expression becoming indescribable. “It’s not okay if I don’t say anything.”
"So what exactly is acceptable?" The boy looked at that pretty little face that always seemed to defy his thoughts.
The girl kept her mouth shut and didn't say anything, but simply kept her arms wrapped around his back and looked up at him with a cold expression.
"Teacher Shen, did the computer crash?" the boy asked, puzzled.
The girl bit her lip and turned her face away, her eyes flashing rapidly as if she were having an internal struggle. Then she looked at him again, her stubborn pink lips still tightly closed.
Under the boy's gaze, she stood there, not making any significant movements.
