It shares the same name as the Soviet Union's first artificial satellite, which shocked the world in 1957. The Soviet Union considered this the Soyuz's "Sputnik moment" in cyberspace.
The Sputnik search engine was advanced for its time: you could enter a keyword into the search box and within seconds it would find the most relevant results from the World Wide Web pages it had indexed and display them in order of ranking.
Similar tools are also under development in the West, such as web directories and rudimentary search systems being developed in several university labs. Sputnik, however, was the first officially released search engine with a complete index and ranking algorithm, open to users worldwide.
