Using his Observation Haki, Matthew clearly sensed that the dark, evil aura had vanished.
Instinctively, a message entered Matthew's brain.
After a demon is killed, its soul is absorbed by the Devil Fruit Encyclopedia, and some of the fruits that were originally grayish-white in the encyclopedia now become vivid.
The fruits that became vivid were mostly ordinary fruits, including the Memory Fruit that Matthew wanted to materialize.
As for those rare Mythical Zoan, Logia, and Paramecia fruits, they remain grayish-white and cannot be materialized.
Clearly, this demon's soul power is insufficient to materialize these top-tier fruits.
With his goal achieved, Matthew was in a very good mood.
He glanced down, and as he withdrew his attack, the dust and smoke gradually dissipated, revealing a huge crater with a diameter of eight hundred meters.
The crater was charred black, filled with flowing lava, and wisps of smoke rose up, emitting an extremely thick and pungent odor.
Matthew looked up and saw the mist that had enveloped the town gradually dissipating with the death of the demon.
His gaze shifted to another direction, where he sensed an aura similar to that of the demon, though it was extremely faint.
It was so faint that unless his Observation Haki had been cultivated to a certain level, he would not have been able to detect it at all.
"Another demon?"
Matthew's eyes flickered slightly.
Golden light shimmered around him, and he shot off in a deserted direction, quickly disappearing into the horizon of the town.
Chapter Twenty-Five: Who cares if he's a mutant?
Soon everything calmed down.
After an unknown amount of time, a group of men who had previously gathered at the large supermarket arrived, armed with weapons, at the edge of the sinkhole, which was 800 meters in diameter.
They looked down at the scene before them, all frozen in place.
"Shit, was the ground bombarded by missiles?"
"Is this Sani Street? And Stan Avenue? They're gone."
"Look over there, is that lava?"
"Is the devil dead?"
"He must be dead. Even a devil couldn't possibly survive such an explosion."
"Did that boy do all of this?"
Everyone looked at each other in dismay. The shockwave from the explosion had almost reached the large supermarket where they had been. Fortunately, the supermarket was not made of wood; otherwise, it would have collapsed like some of the surrounding buildings under such an impact.
"It feels like a dream."
The police chief, hands on his hips, made a remark.
“He might be a mutant? Only those mutants could have such power,” a high school principal murmured.
"Those freaks?"
When mutants are mentioned, people react in various ways. Some frown and show disgust, while others are indifferent or grateful.
"He must be a messenger sent by God to destroy the evil and save us."
The old pastor in the church had a devout look on his face, and many people around him had the same expression; they were clearly believers.
"Who cares who he is? I just know that he saved us all when our family and friends were in danger."
At this moment, the old police chief, with a full head of white hair but full of energy and wearing a police uniform, spoke loudly while smoking a cigarette.
The old sheriff didn't care about any of that; all he knew was that the child had saved everyone in their town, including his wife, two sons and two daughters-in-law, and four grandchildren.
He couldn't imagine what would have happened to his beloved family without that boy.
His heart was filled with gratitude for the boy. He wasn't a believer, but if you had to say who God was, Matthew was God to him at that moment.
In the crowd, Nydy's eyes were filled with tears, and a pungent smell filled her nose. She could no longer hear the conversations and discussions around her.
Her heart was filled with grief.
She didn't want Jennifer to die. Having grown up together, Neydy knew Jennifer well. She knew Jennifer was never a bad person; she was just a normal girl who liked to show off, had fun, and longed for big city life.
Neety and Jennifer are inseparable, and Jennifer will not hesitate to protect Neety when she is bullied.
Even after Jennifer was possessed by the demon, she had countless opportunities to devour her, but whenever it came to the crucial moment, Jennifer would always push her away and struggle to escape.
She also witnessed firsthand how each time Jennifer appeared, the struggle on her face grew more intense.
She knew the devil wanted to eat her, but Jennifer resisted time and time again with her own will. During their last meeting, she could even see the reluctance in one of Jennifer's eyes before she disappeared.
Nydy understood that it was the final farewell.
Covering her mouth, Nydy cried silently, tears streaming down her face. Little did she know that a peculiar color flashed in her pupils.
.................
A light drizzle enveloped the area.
The town of Devil's Pot was almost completely destroyed. Only buildings in remote areas were able to remain intact. The rest of the buildings collapsed or were damaged to varying degrees due to the terrifying impact of the explosion and the earthquake.
The town's residents were gathered and settled in a large, temporary camp set up in the relatively flat southwest direction.
You can see various trucks transporting supplies into the town, staff in raincoats, police officers maintaining order, doctors and others busily moving around the camp, and bulldozers carrying out cleanup work.
Of course, some people are being questioned.
After all, the incident in Devil's Pot Town caused quite a stir.
On the crater created by the bombing, which is 800 meters deep, many people are busy. Inside the crater, some people are collecting information and data, and temporary tents have been set up at the bottom of the crater. Cranes and helicopters are used to transport people and equipment.
Inside the temporary camp, a middle-aged man wearing a black sweater and coat took a document from one of his agents.
"Sir, this is a summary of our questioning and on-site investigation data."
"very good."
The man nodded and began to flip through the documents. His agents, who had not been instructed to leave, waited patiently to the side.
After a long while, the man closed the document, a look of shock flashing in his eyes, followed by a frown that clearly indicated a headache.
"Devil's Jar, man-eating devil, boy who can unleash lasers, am I watching a movie?"
"Sir, this is a portrait drawn by a forensic artist based on the residents who saw the boy."
The agent handed over another sheet of paper. The man took it and saw that it was a sketch of a very young boy.
“Based on this sketch, we investigated his identity by comparing it with portrait images. He is Matthew Brown, who lives in Margrave, Georgia. He has an adoptive father, Daniel Brown, who served in the military for 21 years, participated in three wars, and returned to Margrave after his discharge to join the police department.”
"In May of this year, Daniel Brown was murdered while investigating a criminal organization. A month later, he took revenge, killing everyone involved in Daniel's murder, dismantling the criminal organization, and disclosing a large amount of evidence. Ultimately, the incident was suppressed by a joint effort from multiple parties."
"On June 7th, Matthew left Margrave and then completely disappeared without a trace. To this day, there are no records of his identity or class information at hotels, airports, etc., and there are no records of his bank cards and credit cards being used since that day."
The man raised an eyebrow and waved the document in his hand: "Disappeared for seven months without any record, and when it reappeared, it displayed this power, blasting out an 800-meter-deep crater."
"It seems that our Mr. Matthew has quite a secret."
"Sir, should we mobilize resources to find him?"
“I need to report this to the director. We need to understand the incident in Maggrave in detail. I need a detailed report.”
"Yes, sir."
................
Inside a luxurious villa, the maid left that evening after finishing her duties for the day, as was her custom.
Alexander Pierce sat on the sofa in a sweater, the living room lights were bright, and he was looking at a document in his hand while wearing glasses.
A cup of hot tea sits on the glass table in front of me.
The air was thick with heat, and everything was quiet except for the sounds of turning the pages of documents.
Chapter Twenty-Six: The Memory Fruit
After an unknown amount of time, Pierce finally finished reading the document, closed it, placed it on the table, and picked up his teacup to drink when he suddenly sensed something was amiss.
He calmly picked up the hot tea and took a sip, while keeping his other hand behind his back.
Good evening, Mr. Pierce.
Just as his hand touched the gun behind his back, a clear, young voice broke the silence.
Pierce jumped to his feet, drew his gun, and aimed it at the direction of the sound—the living room bar.
Two figures sat on the bar stools. When Pierce saw the face of one of the figures, his pupils widened slightly, and his heart sank.
"It seems you recognize me, Mr. Secretary General."
Matthew stood up from the bar stool, and Negri, who was holding a bottle of whiskey and examining it, put it down and followed him.
Pierce, as an exceptionally talented politician, was in no way inferior to Hollywood's top actors in terms of acting skills.
He looked bewildered.
"Who are you? Why are you breaking into my home? If you're after money, I can offer you some, but please don't hurt me."
"Save your breath, Mr. Secretary-General. You can control your facial muscles, your eyes, and your body language, but you can't completely control your emotional changes."
Matthew walked straight up to Pierce and reached out to take the gun from Pierce's hand.
The latter had the idea of pulling the trigger when Matthew approached, but the moment Pierce had this thought, a terrifying aura pressed heavily on his heart, and an overwhelming domineering aura locked onto him.
His will was brutally assaulted by that terrifying aura, and Pierce felt like a small boat on a vast ocean, being battered by a storm, and his consciousness began to blur.
His body was out of control, and he was horrified to discover that he could not even move an inch.
Fear breeds madness.
Pierce realized that his identity had been completely exposed, and regardless of how Matthew found out, he knew he was in danger.
Pierce's will to survive made him suppress his drowsy consciousness.
Forcing himself to stay composed, he said with difficulty, "You know who I am, so you understand what's behind me. Whether you want to kill me or use me for something else, you need to think it through, Matthew."
Matthew didn't answer. Instead, he bent down, picked up the document on the table, took a step back, sat on the sofa, and began to read it. He had no interest in talking to Pierce at all.
“Tsk, Secretary General, no, Hydra leader, I was quite startled when I first heard that.”
Negri came up to Pierce, looked him over for a while, and then clicked his tongue in amazement.
After all, no one would believe that the Secretary-General of the United Nations, such a prominent figure, was actually the leader of an evil organization despised by the whole world.
If this were to be disclosed, it would likely cause a huge uproar.
Hydra, a massive organization that once stirred up a storm in the world, nearly defeated the Allied Powers and changed the world order.
However, since World War II, Hydra has been completely dismantled and eliminated. For so many years, it was thought that it only existed in history, but it turns out that Hydra has never been destroyed.
Instead, they lie dormant, parasitize, and grow stronger.
Negri knew very well just how terrifying such a massive force was, not only in terms of its power, but also in its ambition.
When Negri pulled off the last piece of cloth, it meant a complete showdown between the two sides. Pierce understood that this was a fight to the death. Pierce suppressed his fading consciousness and racked his brains trying to speak up for himself and find a way to survive.
But Negrili was no longer giving him that chance.
He directly pierced through Pierce's brain, reaching inside before gently pulling his hand out. In his hand lay a long stack of film reels, containing Pierce's memories.
When Negri pulled out the memory roll, Pierce looked pained and almost fainted.
"Ah, what an amazing ability! I love this ability."
Negri began to look through the memory images belonging to Pierce on this roll of film.
"Let me take a good look at your memories. Hmm, what a rich and colorful experience. Strategic Homeland Defense, Attack and Logistics Agency, Project Paperclip, the introduction of German scientists, and the infiltration of Hydra researchers into the Strategic Homeland Defense, Attack and Logistics Agency."
"Dr. Zola also has the 'Insight' project."
