He saw people praising the "British captain's" bravery online, and the image of his face that day kept flashing through his mind.
Just when he finally couldn't resist going to find Section Chief Jiang, Section Chief Jiang took the initiative to find him.
"Ahem, let's have a meeting."
In front of the information board, Section Chief Jiang clapped his hands.
Li Zhanyi is in class at the university today, so only Lin Chen and Lucy are at the meeting.
"The case of Captain England can move forward. I have contacted my partner and confirmed that I will meet with her this afternoon."
Upon hearing this, Lucy turned and left.
"Let the children go, call me when they've started."
So, only Lin Chen remained by the information board.
Jiang Zhengge handed the documents in his hand to Lin Chen with a smile and said:
"This task is really suitable for beginners. You just need to find our partner and get some information from her."
Lin Chen glanced at the file in his hand: the photo showed a beautiful professional woman with a cold expression and a hint of arrogance in her eyes, with a beauty mark at the corner of her eye.
Her name was written on the side: Shen Xuanyi.
“This is Shen Xuanyi, the daughter of the chairman of United Concrete Group,” Jiang Zhengge introduced to Lin Chen. “After the media storm surrounding the Tiejiao Bridge incident, her father, Shen Tianhu, has been imprisoned and is under investigation. She is struggling to keep United Concrete Group afloat.”
“Our cautious director does not allow the Investigation Bureau to initiate a media war against the Foundation, but I think Ms. Shen Xuanyi would be happy to do it for us.”
"After all, according to the bureau chief..."
"She'll fight like a cornered beast."
......
Chapter 45 After the Rain, the Sky Clears Up (First Update)
Lin Chen originally wanted to go alone; he wanted to try acting alone and train himself.
Who would have thought that, just as he finished preparing his equipment and stepped out of the department office, Li Zhanyi sent him a message:
"Come pick me up from school! I want to go too!"
Lin Chen: ......
Half an hour later, Lin Chen stopped his electric bike and turned to look at the magnificent school gate across the street.
Yudu University, the best university in Yudu, ranks somewhere in the world, I forget exactly where, but I think it's in the top 5.
This is not knowledge that a down-on-his-luck art student who couldn't get into a top-tier university needs to know.
Lin Chen waited across the street for a while, and soon he saw a small figure in beige walk out of the school gate.
Li Zhanyi was still wearing that beige coat. Today she wasn't wearing the energy vest, and her loose white shirt accentuated a touch of girlish laziness.
Because it was a bit cold, the girl changed her usual calf socks into black tights, which made her look a bit taller.
Li Zhanyi stood at the school gate, looking left and right, occasionally flicking her hair, her indifferent eyes scanning her surroundings.
When she was alone, she exuded a cool and aloof aura, as if she were on a different level from the groups of college students around her, appearing somewhat lonely.
This was the first time Lin Chen had seen Li Zhanyi like this; she usually seemed so lively.
He rode his electric scooter to a more conspicuous spot and waved across the street:
"Over here!"
Li Zhanyi finally noticed Lin Chen, and a smile immediately appeared on her face. Then she made a "wait a minute" gesture.
The girl waited patiently for the red light, crossed the road with the crowd, and then jogged over to Lin Chen's side.
"Sorry for the long wait, I chatted with the teacher for a bit longer about the final assignment..."
Li Zhanyi reached out and picked up a few fallen leaves from the back seat, then got on the bike and gently supported Lin Chen's waist.
This series of movements was so practiced it was almost exaggerated. Before Lin Chen could react, he felt two slender little hands grab his waist.
"What? Let's go." Li Zhanyi leaned her head against Lin Chen's shoulder.
"Walk."
So, Lin Chen rode his electric bike, carrying Li Zhanyi, along the streets after the rain had stopped.
Wisps of pale gold pierced through the clouds, through the leaves of the trees lining the street, and turned into tiny specks of light that fell on the wet asphalt road and on the forehead of the girl beneath her wispy bangs.
Her head was right next to Lin Chen's shoulder, and Lin Chen only needed to turn his head slightly to see her long eyelashes that seemed to be shimmering.
"I felt sleepy during class this morning. I'll get a coffee later," Li Zhanyi yawned. "Where should we eat?"
"Have a meal?"
"You're going to work without eating lunch?" Li Zhanyi blinked. "Have you forgotten that you still owe me a meal? It's been a week."
"It seems like there's something to that..."
Lin Chen then remembered this, since Huihui had been cooking for him every day after school lately, making Lin Chen feel embarrassed to order takeout.
I always feel like ordering takeout is hurting a young girl's feelings...
“Then you choose, I’m not sure where to eat,” Lin Chen said honestly. “I haven’t spent much money since I came to Yudu.”
"Let's go to Mingzhu Beach District. There are lots of good restaurants in the Shuangjianghui area," Li Zhanyi glanced at his watch. "I checked the meeting place with my informant, and it seems to be in Mingzhu Beach District as well?"
“Yes, it seems to be in the business district you mentioned,” Lin Chen said.
Mingzhu Beach District is the most prosperous central area of the entire Yudu. With Lin Chen's previous income, he could only afford to go there once a year.
I have a feeling I'm going to spend a lot of money today...
"Don't worry, I won't rip you off," Li Zhanyi chuckled beside Lin Chen's shoulder, as if she could read his mind. "Let's not eat in the skyscraper shopping mall. I know a street-side restaurant that's affordable and tastes pretty good. What do you think?"
"Actually, it's okay to spend a little money..." This made Lin Chen a little embarrassed. Why was he making the girl worry about expenses?
He still has some money on hand. He got a commission of 1500 from the school case and sold the Azure Crystal for 4000. His savings have now exceeded 20,000.
“There are still places for you to spend money later,” Li Zhanyi patted Lin Chen on the shoulder. “After we’re done this afternoon, I’ll take you to the weapon shop to upgrade your equipment. Then you’ll see how money disappears like water.”
"Then it's up to you." Lin Chen smiled helplessly.
So, on the streets after the rain, Li Zhanyi used her phone to navigate, while Lin Chen hurriedly turned left and right on the street.
The electric vehicle drove out of Xiwang District and into Mingzhutan District, bathed in the pleasant afternoon sun.
Before long, Lin Chen saw the landmark building of Rain City on the horizon—
Rain City Star Radio and Television Tower.
The silver tower stands tall at the confluence of the two rivers, piercing through the misty fog. All the surrounding buildings are slightly shorter than it, like a group of generals surrounding a king.
Lin Chen had heard many stories about that tower. The official explanation was that it could detect all subspace fluctuations within the Rain City area and then send the information to the Anomaly Investigation Bureau.
There are also rumors that it fires lasers at unusual entities within a ten-kilometer radius, but no one has actually seen it.
"Come on, over here, over here, stop right here!"
Two blocks away from the business district, Lin Chen stopped his electric scooter, stood up, and rubbed his lower back.
"I'll definitely buy a car to commute once I've saved enough money." He stretched.
"Of course, I'm used to riding in Lao Jiang's accident-damaged car," Li Zhanyi said, standing up and brushing the dew off her skirt. "But riding an electric scooter is quite fun too, you can breathe fresh air anytime!"
"Rainy days are a real ordeal," Lin Chen chuckled.
"Then you should work hard and buy a car as soon as possible, so we don't always have to hitch a ride with Lao Jiang," Li Zhanyi nudged Lin Chen with his elbow. "Actually, buying a car for commuting isn't expensive. Look, I'll just pick one out for you randomly from the roadside, for example..."
Her fingers had barely moved when they landed on the dazzling pearly white:
It was a Ghost, parked on the side of the road, like a noble knight's white horse, with an arrogant posture.
"Uh..."
"It would be difficult to go without food and water for fifty years..." Lin Chen scratched his head.
This was the first time he had ever seen a car of this caliber in real life...
"How strange, would the owner of a car like this actually be interested in my little gem shop..." Li Zhanyi circled the luxury car twice with small, quick steps. "There's nowhere else to go around here..."
"That means your taste is correct," Lin Chen nodded seriously. "A hidden gem of a street-side shop that even rich guys love to eat at."
"You're quite good at praising people." Li Zhanyi smiled and nudged Lin Chen with her elbow.
Just then, a loud shout came from the shop across the street:
"What good is your apology! I'll make you pay with your life! Pay with your life!"
"Pay with your life! Damn it, how about we guys kill you right here today?"
What's going on...? Lin Chen and Li Zhanyi exchanged a glance, instantly switching to battle expressions, and rushed towards the small shop.
.......
Chapter 46 They Just Wanted to Vent Their Anger (Second Update)
Upon entering the small shop, the scene before him made Lin Chen frown.
A group of men were gathered around a dining table; some were holding bottles, while others were clenching their fists.
At the dining table, a woman in a white suit sat quietly, her long black hair obscuring half of her face.
"Are you going to die here or somewhere else?" a burly man said menacingly. "It's bad luck to die in someone's shop, isn't it?"
He didn't seem to be joking; he genuinely wanted to take action.
Lin Chen immediately stepped forward and shouted sternly:
"What are you doing! Don't do anything!"
Hearing his rebuke, the burly men all turned around and glared at him fiercely.
"And who the hell are you?"
Between them, the woman turned her face, and Lin Chen finally saw her face clearly.
Wait a moment...
Lin Chen recognized her by the beauty mark at the corner of her eye:
Isn't that Shen Xuanyi, the interim director of United Concrete Group?
Lin Chen was stunned for a moment. At this moment, a burly man walked up to him with a fierce expression.
"I'm asking you a question, you little brat. Who are you? Playing the hero here to save the damsel in distress?"
A strong stench of sweat mixed with the smell of secondhand smoke hit him, causing Lin Chen to frown slightly.
He had dealt with this kind of person many times during his time delivering food, and he knew that even if you were afraid of him, you absolutely could not show your fear, otherwise he would immediately take advantage of you.
Lin Chen is not afraid of him at all now.
He gently pulled Li Zhanyi, who was about to step forward, back slightly to shield him, then calmly took out his identification from his coat:
"Rain City Anomaly Investigation Bureau, Rapid Response Section 1."
"What good is the Anomaly Investigation Bureau here?" the burly man frowned. "You come here just because there's something unusual about it?"
"No, you seem a bit agitated," Lin Chen narrowed his eyes slightly, feigning an experienced demeanor. "I suspect your mind has been affected by an abnormal entity, and you're showing some violent tendencies. Why don't you come back with me?"
Lin Chen's words made the big man somewhat wary, but he still looked like he was looking for trouble.
"That woman, Shen Xuanyi, her shoddy construction work killed my niece!" the burly man whispered. "She deserves to pay with her life!"
Upon hearing that the other party was also a family member of a victim in the Iron Horn Bridge incident, Lin Chen's heart tightened slightly.
But he showed no sign of backing down and waved his identification again, saying:
“This is not a reason for you to resort to violence. The chairman of United Concrete is already in jail. She is innocent.”
"Go to hell... You want to be the Shen family's protectors?" The burly man became even more agitated.
“She’s our informant, assisting us in investigating the Iron Cape Bridge incident,” Li Zhanyi said sternly. “If you really want justice for the victims, then don’t do anything reckless!”
The burly man's face twisted as he looked at the two investigators in front of him.
Sensing that his emotions were getting out of control, Lin Chen tensed his muscles, ready to stop them immediately if they did anything rash.
If something happens to the informant on the first contact, all the credit he's earned will be forfeited.
Just when things were at their most critical, police sirens sounded at the door.
