Behind the counter stood a white plastic mannequin wearing a tactical tunic and a boonie hat, with a mustache painted on its blank face.
"Good morning, Tactical Uncle," Li Zhanyi greeted, "I've brought the new recruits to collect their onboarding gear!"
"Is this a person?" Lin Chen was taken aback.
“A friendly anomaly entity, remember ‘Police Officer’? They’re similar to these.” Li Zhanyi leaned against the counter.
"I'm not that kind of stupid cat!" The tactical uncle stiffly moved his joints, tilting his head to the side. "I possess a higher level of intelligence!"
"What does 1+1 equal?" Li Zhanyi asked.
"Currently, deep in thought... Okay, the customer has raised a question: What does 1+1 equal? It seems like a math problem, but I need to first consider the meaning behind the question..."
“See, not smart.” Li Zhanyi shrugged.
She tapped on the table, interrupting the tactical uncle's thoughts:
"Get a special uniform set, then come to Lin Chen and give him the card."
Lin Chen handed over the ID card, and the tactical uncle pressed the card to his chest and "beeped" it before turning away.
It rummaged through a white plastic box, taking out one piece of equipment after another.
"Speaking of which, what about the shotgun you mimicked the other day?" Li Zhanyi asked. "It should be the same model as the section chief's anti-gamma-class shotgun, right?"
"I hid it. If I brought it in, wouldn't you confiscate it?" Lin Chen answered honestly.
“Smart,” Li Zhanyi blinked. “What’s the principle behind this mimicry? I even played with that pistol you projected yesterday, and it’s no different from the section chief’s.”
“I can usually recreate things I’ve seen,” Lin Chen said, “but not things that are too big or too intricate.”
"Would the section chief's car be alright?" Li Zhanyi's eyes were full of anticipation.
"It probably won't work." Lin Chen shook his head.
Before assassinating Qingtian, Lin Chen had tested his projection ability, since the more things he could project, the more room he had to maneuver.
He discovered that he couldn't even project his electric car onto the screen.
It's not that he can't project it; to be precise, when he tries to project his electric car, his temples get so hot they feel like they're about to explode, so he has to give up.
But for some reason, Lin Chen had a hunch that he might be able to try projecting an electric car now.
Did those blue substances enhance his physique?
Not sure.
"The kit is ready."
The tactical uncle pushed out a plate and gestured as if to invite the customer to eat.
Lin Chen looked at the items on the plate: a pistol, three magazines, a box of bullets, two brand-new shirts and vests, and a communication headset.
"What color do you want for the coat?" the tactical uncle asked.
Lin Chen thought for a moment and made a decision:
"One set in black, one set in beige."
“Hey, you’re copying me.” Li Zhanyi raised his eyebrows slightly.
"Black is too serious, beige is more casual," Lin Chen chuckled.
Perhaps from now on I'll have to wear a bulletproof windbreaker when I go out... Lin Chen's heart sank slightly.
The tactical uncle quickly pushed over two trench coats and then handed over a large bag.
"Come on, let me introduce you."
Li Zhanyi glanced at the contents of the plate and first picked up a vest:
"This is a charging vest, look here."
Following her slender fingers, Lin Chen saw a USB charging port at the inside seam of the vest.
"Charging... a vest?" His mouth opened slightly.
“This vest has a built-in active defense system that automatically releases energy to counteract the impact of a high-speed object approaching,” Li Zhanyi tossed the vest into his bag. “This is very important, since it provides full-body protection and can be life-saving in critical moments.”
There's such a weird thing?
"High-tech stuff..." Lin Chen exclaimed, like a country bumpkin visiting a grand garden.
“Then this is the bulletproof trench coat,” Li Zhanyi tossed the trench coat into the bag. “The charged vest isn’t sensitive enough to slow-moving projectiles, since they’re usually non-lethal. But getting hit on the head by a rock isn’t very pleasant, is it? That’s where the bulletproof trench coat comes in. You just grab the hem and protect your head. It can stop stray bullets and the like. Even if the vest runs out of power, it can still withstand a few bullets.”
"However, no matter what, it's best to use a trench coat to block bullets when facing a hail of bullets. The energy of a vest is hard to calculate, and in actual combat, you have to assume that every bullet will hit you."
"exaggerate."
Looking at the Bureau of Investigation's standard equipment, Lin Chen felt as if he had walked onto a movie set.
Wearing both vests and trench coats, they really got things done elegantly.
At first, she thought Li Zhanyi was cosplaying and wondered how she could carry out a mission wearing an outfit that looked like a JK uniform. Now that she thought about it, she realized that she was really ignorant: her trench coat could withstand full-power bullets and her vest had a built-in active defense system!
This outfit is practically all about technology and ruthless skill.
“Well, and then there’s this sidearm,” Li Zhanyi picked up the small pistol. “This is a custom-made special pistol, the RBAI-320, a lightweight 9mm, which can fire some special ammunition. I’ll teach you about these when we’re on the move; I’m afraid you’ll get bored if I just talk about it in the air.”
“Not boring at all,” Lin Chen chuckled. “It’s quite interesting.”
"Really? Louis was actually annoyed with me back then, saying that I should just give him the instruction manual and that he thought I was being long-winded."
Li Zhanyi stuck out his tongue, clearly still bothered by that incident.
"How about we fire a couple of shots? We can pick up regular 9mm bullets every day," Li Zhanyi said, shaking his pistol. "You need to practice your marksmanship. You missed quite a few shots on the beach the other day, didn't you?"
"You saw all this..." Lin Chen scratched his head. "Alright, let's practice then."
Just then, someone behind them shouted:
"Hey, Little Zhanyi, you even brought a newbie along?"
Lin Chen turned his head and saw a muscular man wearing a black vest walk into the shooting range, followed by several brothers.
He took off his sunglasses and glanced at Lin Chen:
"Who's this? The new clerk?"
“Investigator,” Li Zhanyi said coldly.
"Huh, an investigator?"
The man walked up to Lin Chen. He looked to be about 1.85 meters tall, slightly taller than Lin Chen, but the masculine aura emanating from him made Lin Chen frown.
"Why does the department keep recruiting skinny guys?"
Here it comes, classic workplace bullying... Lin Chen sighed softly:
"Excuse me, could you move aside?"
......
Chapter 29 Classic Workplace Bullying (First Update)
"Excuse me?"
Seeing Lin Chen's expressionless face, the man turned around and burst into laughter with his companions behind him:
"Kid, you should at least show some appreciation to your seniors, right? Louis, who joined before you, at least offered you a cigarette."
"You dare bring that up again?" Li Zhanyi frowned, and Lin Chen saw the traces of anger on the girl's face for the first time. "I already told Section Chief Jiang!"
"Little Zhanyi, why are you so angry..."
The man looked at Lin Chen, his eyes darkening slightly.
"Let me introduce myself, I'm Marcus, the head of the Second Section," the man introduced himself. "Young man, what's up? How about a drink tonight?"
"..."
Lin Chen was actually too lazy to deal with this kind of person. He could easily figure out why the other person was so hostile: the first department had flexible working hours, better benefits, and more flexible hours. Zhan Yi could even work while attending university.
To put it bluntly, they want to use their seniority to put pressure on newcomers, gain some benefits for themselves, and subconsciously cultivate their own status in the newcomers so they can be easily bossed around in the future.
Commonly known as workplace PUA.
If you give in to this kind of person, you'll only be seen as an easy target.
"Let's go, Zhanyi," Lin Chen said, not really wanting to pay attention. "Let's go practice shooting."
Just as Li Zhanyi was about to follow, Marcus reached out to stop her.
"...!"
Before Lin Chen could react, his hand had already grabbed Marcus's wrist and stopped him next to Zhan Yi's arm.
My reaction... was that fast?
Lin Chen paused for a moment, then immediately spoke calmly:
"Don't rush, senior teacher."
Marcus seemed taken aback by the fact that "this greyhound grabbed my wrist?"
He froze for a full two seconds, his arm muscles throbbing with blood, only to find that Lin Chen's hand was like an iron claw, impossible to break free from.
Unable to move an inch.
"..."
Marcus kept trying, but he couldn't move at all. Beside him, the two staff members from the Second Section were clearly puzzled.
Taking advantage of the opportunity, Li Zhanyi lightly leaped up and came to Lin Chen's back.
She was clearly surprised that Lin Chen had managed to subdue the muscular Marcus, and whispered in his ear:
"Alright, let's not make things too tense!"
Lin Chen nodded, then extended his other hand.
Under Marcus's astonished gaze, he bent Marcus's hand into a handshake gesture, and then clasped it with both of his own hands.
The up-and-down motion is a vigorous shaking, like a new employee meeting their boss:
"My name is Lin Chen, and I'm a new staff member in the first section. I hope you'll take care of me from now on."
Lin Chen smiled at Marcus, whose expression was tense, let go of his hand, and took Li Zhanyi's hand as they walked away into the distance.
"..."
Watching Lin Chen's departing figure, Marcus rubbed his wrist, trying to suppress the pain from showing on his face.
"Boss, you're not drinking anymore?" The second section clerk asked, somewhat surprised.
This section chief of the second section even gives his own staff members a hard time on their first day of work, let alone those in the neighboring group!
"Damn, this kid's got some interesting traits."
Marcus finally realized what had happened, and looking at Lin Chen's retreating figure, he laughed in exasperation at the way he had been humiliated.
A new oddball has arrived in Department One... much weirder than the previous ones...
"Let's go back."
"Didn't you come here to practice your shooting, boss?"
"Practice my ass! Have you finished writing the report before you start practicing? Go work overtime!"
He hid his reddened wrists behind his back.
......
Lin Chen walked away while looking back, and only breathed a sigh of relief when he was sure that Marcus was not following.
He felt his hand being gripped slightly tighter. Looking down, he realized that Li Zhanyi, whose hand he had been holding, was squeezing back forcefully.
"You have such a strong hand!" she exclaimed in amazement.
Lin Chen quickly let go of Li Zhanyi's hand, feeling a little awkward: he had just done it subconsciously, and it wasn't very polite to grab a girl's hand so forcefully!
But Li Zhanyi seemed indifferent. She took small, quick steps, circling Lin Chen a few times, sizing him up:
"Do you also have a psychic ability that's... particularly energetic or something?"
"I just work out regularly." Lin Chen felt that his excuse was utterly weak.
“But you caught Qingtian’s fist that day, didn’t you?” Li Zhanyi pinched Lin Chen’s arm. “And you’re not that big…wow, but your flesh is very firm.”
