He didn't use the siren to treat the girl directly, because one should always be wary of others, and Lynn was still afraid of being betrayed.
The girl didn't move away; she just stared at him blankly.
"Thank you..." her voice trembled with tears, "Thank you for saving me..."
Lynn didn't say anything, she just focused on bandaging the wound.
He didn't know what to say.
If it weren't for that sudden hallucination, he would most likely have continued hiding in the tree and watching her die.
"It's wrapped up." He let go of her hand and stood up. "Don't cry, the crying might attract other people."
The girl immediately covered her mouth with her hand, forcefully suppressing her sobs.
Lynn sighed inwardly as he looked at her like this.
At the age of thirteen or fourteen, being thrown into this kind of murder game, yet still resolutely trying to save his competitor... what is this child's heart made of?
"What's your name?" Lynn asked.
The girl looked up and hastily wiped the tears and dirt from her face with her sleeve.
“E...Eileen.” Her voice was still trembling, but it was a little better than before. “Eileen Iris.”
iris.
Born into nobility.
But looking at her cowering appearance now, she really doesn't fit the word "aristocrat" at all.
“Lynn,” he said briefly, then turned to look at the hunter’s corpse.
The dampness had dissipated, and the body lay slumped in a pile of fallen leaves, blood still seeping from the wound on its neck.
Lynn walked over, squatted down, and began searching the hunter's body.
He had a short axe, of good quality, but he couldn't use it.
A leather water sac, still more than half full of water, a small bag of dry rations, and a dagger.
Lynn carefully put away the water pouch and dry rations, hesitated for a moment, then turned and handed the dagger to Eileen.
"Take it."
Eileen paused for a moment, then extended her uninjured left hand and took the dagger.
"Aren't you...aren't you afraid I'll use this against you?" she asked softly.
Lynn glanced at her.
"Since I saved you, it means I trust you."
Eileen opened her mouth as if she wanted to say something, but in the end she just lowered her head and gripped the dagger tightly in her hand.
Lynn straightened up and looked around.
We cannot linger here; the stench of the corpses will attract wild animals in the rainforest, and may also draw other successors.
"Can we walk?" he asked.
Eileen bit her lip and pushed herself up to stand.
"I can...I can walk."
"Follow me."
Lynn didn't waste any more words and turned to walk in the northwest direction.
That direction was an area he had explored before; it had water sources and the terrain was relatively familiar to him.
After walking for about ten minutes, Lynn slowed down after confirming that there was nothing unusual around him.
"What level are you in now?" he asked without turning his head.
"Level 40".
Lynn paused for a moment.
Level 40?
Ten levels higher than him?
He glanced back at Eileen's petite frame and timid expression, and for a moment he was incredulous.
"You're level 40, and you can't beat that hunter?"
Eileen's face flushed instantly, and her voice became even softer.
"I...I'm not very good at fighting..."
Lynn was silent for two seconds.
A level 40 warrior who doesn't know how to fight.
Fine.
This world has all sorts of oddballs.
"So what can you do?"
"I...I'm pretty good at swordsmanship," Eileen whispered in defense, "It's just...it's just that I'm a little hesitant to face people..."
They dared not lay a hand on anyone.
Lynn suddenly felt a sense of irony.
A person who dared not kill was thrown into a trial where he had to kill in order to survive.
Is this a cruel joke of fate, or some kind of cruel test?
"Alright, that's enough." Lynn waved his hand. "Let's find a safe place to stay first, and we'll talk about the rest later."
Eileen nodded obediently and said nothing more.
After walking for about twenty more minutes in the dense forest, Lynn led her to the stream they had discovered earlier.
He chose a recessed area surrounded by huge tree roots, which provided natural cover and made him difficult to spot.
"This is fine." Lynn sat down and handed the water pouch to Eileen. "Have some water and something to eat."
Eileen took the water pouch and drank it in small sips, but her eyes kept secretly watching Lynn.
Lynn leaned against the tree root, closed his eyes, but his mind was racing.
He was thinking about those pale golden eyes.
Who exactly is that person?
Is it another successor? Or some mechanism within the trial itself?
If it is another successor, then the other party's ability is too terrifying. Being able to directly inject illusions into the consciousness of others is a mental ability that is even more advanced than the Siren's Whisper.
And... what was that person's purpose?
Letting him see the girl's past and making him choose to "save her"... Lynn couldn't understand the intention behind this.
Are we helping him? Or are we using him?
Or perhaps... she's testing him?
Lynn opened her eyes and looked at Eileen.
The little girl was holding the water bag, looking at him timidly with her big, gray-blue eyes, like a wounded little animal.
"What...what are you thinking about?" she asked softly.
"I'm thinking about how to survive," Lynn answered truthfully.
Eileen lowered her head, her voice even softer.
"You could have simply not saved me; that would have saved you a lot of trouble."
Lynn shook her head. "This is my own choice."
He paused, then added.
"Besides, you saved that hunter before."
Eileen's body visibly stiffened.
"How...how did you know?"
Lynn did not answer the question.
He simply looked at her, his tone calm.
"You did the right thing, it's just that the other person didn't deserve your kindness."
Eileen's eyes reddened again.
She lowered her head, buried her face in her knees, and her shoulders trembled slightly.
Lynn did not comfort her.
He looked up at the dense canopy of trees overhead, with only one thought in his mind.
Those golden eyes were still watching him from the shadows.
He could sense it.
Chapter Eighty-Six: The Shura Field
Eileen cried for a long time, burying her face in her knees, her shoulders shaking, not daring to make a sound.
Lynn sat beside him, neither speaking nor urging him.
He understands that feeling.
Being betrayed by the person you saved is a far more devastating experience than simple physical pain.
After about five or six minutes, Eileen looked up, wiped her eyes with her sleeve, and took a deep breath.
"I'm sorry... I made you laugh at me."
“There’s nothing funny about it.” Lynn broke off a piece of hard biscuit from the food bag and handed it to him. “Eat something. After you’re done crying, you have to think about what to do next.”
Eileen took the biscuit, took a small bite, and chewed for a long time before swallowing it.
"Lynn..." she hesitated for a moment, "Why did you save me?"
Lynn leaned against the tree root, thinking about how to answer.
"Because I saw you save that hunter."
Eileen's hand stopped.
“You could have just ignored him.” Lynn looked at her. “A competitor was trapped by vines. Any normal person would have taken the opportunity to run away or finish him off while he was immobilized. But you didn’t. You went up and saved him.”
Eileen lowered her head and spoke very softly.
"I... I just felt that I couldn't just watch someone die in front of me and do nothing..."
"So am I too."
Eileen looked up and met Lynn's gaze.
“I think so too. We can’t just watch you die in front of us and do nothing.” Lynn shrugged. “It’s that simple.”
Eileen was stunned for several seconds, then the corners of her mouth turned up slightly, revealing a very faint smile.
That was the first time Lynn had ever seen her smile.
Although her smile still carried traces of tears and exhaustion, at least she no longer looked like she was about to cry at any moment.
"Thank you."
"Don't thank me." Lynn waved his hand. "If I thank you too much, I'll feel like I'm some kind of great philanthropist."
Eileen tilted her head, seemingly not quite understanding what he meant.
Lynn did not explain.
He stood up, stretched his stiff shoulders, and began to think about his next strategy.
Now, he has an extra teammate.
