Dark Forest: Liberating the Three-Body Problem: Chapter 151: The ABCs of Communism, Workers' Uprising
In the Jiujiang Concession in Jiangxi Province, Victoria's patrolmen beat a dock worker to death for no reason. This incident acted as a fuse, causing a conflict between the workers and the patrolmen. Subsequently, American sailors joined the suppression operation and ruthlessly killed two workers with bayonets.
This incident was like burning kerosene, poured directly on the workers who had been suffering from unfair treatment. It was like igniting a powder keg full of gunpowder, instantly triggering strong indignation among the dock workers.
At first, more than 4,000 dock workers held a strike march, holding up banners and shouting slogans of protest. Victoria immediately sent sailors from warships to suppress the workers' anger by force.
The local association "Reform Society" responded quickly. They produced and distributed a large number of leaflets about the incident, exposing the atrocities of the police and sailors and calling on workers to unite and resist oppression. At the same time, they also reprinted and distributed Liaoyuan Weekly to let more people know the truth about this workers' movement.
Afterwards, the association's president, Yao Wuchang, personally went out to give speeches and agitation at multiple locations. He stood on a simple podium, his face firm, his voice as loud as a bell: "Workers, we can no longer endure such oppression and massacre! This is not the tragedy of one person, but the sorrow of our entire working class! We must unite and issue the strongest resistance to these oppressors!"
At their call, more than 10,000 industrial workers joined the strike, and the impact of this strike is even spreading beyond Jiujiang. Thousands of workers from Nanxun Railway, Changbei Dock and other places responded to the strike.
Under this situation, Chen Xiuquan was shocked.
"The power of the working class is not strong enough. This will ruin the revolutionary future of Jiangxi Province!"
He said to Mu Yuan: "Mu Yuan, I hope you can go to Gan Province and persuade them. They are taking too much risks. It is not appropriate at this time."
That's what he thinks.
Taking Shanghai as an example, there are only more than 500,000 workers, accounting for only one-fifth of the total population of Shanghai.
In Jiujiang, in Jiangxi Province, the number of workers is even smaller, and their proportion in the total population is also smaller.
Such a small group of workers is still very weak, so Chen Xiuquan believes that the working class today needs to accumulate strength and wait for the day when it can overwhelm the bourgeoisie in strength.
He felt that going to war too early with imperialism, the most powerful enemy of the working class, would deplete the strength of the working class and delay the day of the working class revolution.
Therefore, he has always emphasized that today's workers' strikes should be more about fighting for "management rights" and their economic rights, rather than political rights.
Mu Yuan nodded in agreement. He looked towards the west, with a light flickering in his eyes. No one knew what he was thinking.
...
...
Chen Xiuquan hopes that Mu Yuan will help the workers negotiate with Victoria so that Victoria can meet the workers' economic demands as soon as possible and prevent the scale of the conflict from continuing to expand.
His original intention was obviously good. In his view, the strength of the workers in Jiujiang area was absolutely no match for the imperialist power, and the strength of the working class still needed to be strengthened and could not withstand too many setbacks. Therefore, it would be a good thing for the workers to hold peace talks as soon as possible, end the strike as soon as possible, and meet the workers' demands as soon as possible.
But Mu Yuan doesn't think so.
The power of the working class will not become weaker or weakened due to repeated suppression.
The more capitalism develops, the more the working class will become stronger. This is an objective law of human social development. Objective laws will never change because of the bourgeoisie's brutal suppression and bribery policies.
Moreover, according to the number of people, the working class is weak... Could it be that in ten years, the number of workers in Yan country will become large? Did the number of working class in Tsarist Russia occupy an overwhelming advantage?
In the original history of the October Revolution, the Bolshevik Party before the revolution had only more than 300 members, while the number of industrial workers in the country was only more than 20 million. The total number of workers and their family population in the country was only more than million, accounting for less than % of the total population.
However, such Bolsheviks were able to defeat the bourgeois regime and repel the armies of fourteen bourgeois countries. At the same time, after the war, they still had the spare capacity to carry out various construction projects. For example, in the popularization of education, the Tsarist Russia's education expenditure in 1917 was 3.4 million rubles. By 1919, in Soviet Russia, this figure had become 38.8 billion. Taking into account currency depreciation, it increased nearly eight times. And this was during the war... The power of the working class is very strong.
In Mu Yuan's view, the strike of Jiujiang dock workers was a good opportunity for the workers in Dayan to move from strike to armed struggle.
It is true that the number of workers is small now, but their consciousness is relatively high. They have cultivated unity and discipline under the conditions of large-scale production. As long as they are organized, their strength is not weak. Moreover, they can form a united front and unite the urban petty bourgeoisie such as small vendors, small shop owners, and employees, and the peasant proletariat who make up the majority of Dayan’s population, and they will become an extremely powerful force.
With this idea in mind, he contacted Mu Yuan, who was thousands of miles away, and asked her to convey his opinions to the Communist International in order to obtain support.
After all, to promote an armed struggle, you need money, food and weapons.
Let’s do a simple calculation.
In 1920, one dollar could buy about 18 kilograms of rice. A worker ate 1.5 kilograms of rice a day, and 5000 workers ate 7500 kilograms, which is about 417 yuan. This was just the worker's expenditure on rice. If their families were included, the number would have to be multiplied by at least three.
An obvious fact is that during a strike, workers will not participate in production. If they do not participate in production, they will have no income and can only consume their savings...
However, food expenses are only a small part of the cost. The bulk of the cost is for weapons. A Mauser rifle costs about 20 yuan, 100 rifles cost about 2000 yuan, 500 rounds of bullets cost 20 yuan, 5000 rounds of bullets cost 200 yuan... Of course, this amount seems large, but it is nothing.
Another obvious fact is that the value that keeps workers reproducing their labor is much lower than the value they produce using their labor. The former is slightly lower than the wages paid by capitalists to workers, while the latter is much higher than the wages they receive. For 1251 workers, it is much higher than 10000 yuan, at least more than yuan.
And if the means of production were in the hands of these 5,000 workers themselves, allowing them to fully control the value of the production of their own labor, then their lives would be five or six times better than before. After deducting the part about expanding production, they would have enough money to organize an army of a hundred people.
Many people in later generations do not calculate this value, so they do not understand at all why the two five-year plans of the Russian Soviet Union could exceed the accumulation of other industrial countries in a hundred years.
They attributed this to the transfer of industries in capitalist countries under the economic crisis, to exports in exchange for foreign exchange, and to loans, but... all these things added together were far less than 1 billion US dollars. Even if a worker only produced US dollar in surplus value in a day, the billion US dollars was no more than the surplus value produced by tens of millions of Soviet workers in dozens of days, and it could only save them less than percent of their time.
In reality, a worker working eight hours a day produces far more than $1 in surplus value from his or her labor.
This is the power that is deliberately concealed from the working class. The bourgeoisie exploits most of their value, so even the workers themselves who possess this power often cannot see the power they possess.
Why did so many warlord governments in Da Yan fail after a short time? It was because they had no economic system and could not create value. In this case, no matter how much money they had at the beginning, it would be quickly consumed, and they could not even pay the soldiers' salaries.
This is why it is said that workers are the most important productive force. Productivity is the combination of means of production and workers, but means of production are things that need workers to use them. Without workers, productivity cannot be developed.
...
..
Soviet Russia.
The white birch trees outside the window swayed gently in the breeze. The morning light shone through the window lattice onto the desk. The room was filled with the faint scent of ink and paper.
Mu Yuan gently placed a copy of "The ABC of Communism" written in Russian on Vladimir's desk. The booklet looked a bit heavy, with the title printed concisely and clearly on the cover in a solemn and powerful font.
Vladimir looked up at her, his eyes full of doubt and expectation: "Did Mu Yuan write this?"
Mu Yuan nodded, with a smile on her face: "Yes."
Dark Forest: Liberating the Three Body: Chapter 152 The Road to Industrialization, Relying on Saving and Accumulation
Vladimir picked up "ABC" and opened the first page. The paper turned gently between his fingers, making a slight rustling sound.
His eyes quickly swept over the words, gradually becoming focused and deep. The content of the book was full of a deep understanding of communism and passionate expression between the lines.
He gradually turned to the chapter on economic development.
Economic construction in Soviet Russia had begun two years earlier, but many problems remained unresolved.
He, Mu Yuan and some theorists within the party have written many articles on economic development, but most of these articles are scattered, without forming a systematic theoretical framework or such systematic expression.
In the chapter on economic development, the ABC states:
“If our country had become a socialist country after the revolution, how would it work and build while being surrounded by capitalism all over the world?
First of all, it is certain that this kind of construction will not make our country an appendage of world capitalism, will not allow our country to be involved in the overall system of capitalist development and become its auxiliary industry, and will not allow our country to develop as an auxiliary enterprise of world capitalism, the so-called "world factory", but as an independent economic unit. "
This passage made Vladimir think. The book clearly and forcefully pointed out the issue of the independence of socialist countries in the capitalist world, which is a major challenge that the current Soviet Union and all future socialist countries will face. At the same time, it emphasized the importance of maintaining economic independence and put forward specific strategies.
"Secondly, this kind of development cannot rely on plundering colonies, using war reparations, obtaining loans by transferring business rights, etc., nor can it be achieved by obtaining large amounts of foreign loans and long-term credit loans like Victoria, America and other countries. These historical methods are capitalist methods, and should not be the methods of a socialist country. Our method is to rely on saving and accumulation, and to achieve national development through saving and accumulation of the value generated by the labor of hundreds of millions of people."
Vladimir saw this and a hint of recognition flashed in his eyes. The ideas expressed by Mu Yuan in this book are highly consistent with the current practical goals of the Soviet Union. Realizing independent industrialization is the key to the future development of the Soviet Union, and this is also the direction that many comrades in the party have been working towards.
"So, what should we do? There are only two ways, one is to take the agricultural road, the other is to take the industrial road. The former is to let our country retain its identity as an agricultural country, export agricultural products and import equipment, and continue in this way.
However, surrounded by capitalism around the world, if our country remains at such a stage that it cannot produce means of production and means of production, and has to let its national economy be controlled by those developed capitalist countries that produce and export means of production, then it will not be able to maintain economic independence and will inevitably become subordinate to world capital.
Therefore, we can only take the path of industrialization and become an independent industrial country that can produce the equipment we need on our own. "
"Industrialization should be the general route of our future construction. However, not all kinds of industries can be called industrialization. The core and foundation of industrialization is to develop the production of means of production and the manufacturing industry of the country, or simply put, to develop heavy industry..."
Vladimir read every paragraph of the book carefully, and some new ideas gradually emerged in his mind.
"This is a really rare good book." He whispered, with a glimmer of approval in his eyes.
Writing such a book requires not only a deep understanding of the theory, but also an extremely firm belief and eager expectations for the future.
Seeing his approval, the smile on Mu Yuan's face became even gentler.
"In fact, due to the limitation of length, many things are not written in this book. In the discussion on industrialization, Mu Yuan wanted to include the accounting content of industrial and agricultural economy under the planned economy, but as an enlightenment book, the length of this book should not be too long, so many things I wanted to write about could not be written down."
"This book is excellent enough," Vladimir said. "It provides valuable guidance and direction for our economic construction."
He had a big smile on his face.
"This book is well written and should be widely disseminated! We should not only distribute it to the whole party for study, but also give it to the Communist International for circulation, so that countless revolutionaries in the world will have the opportunity to read this book.
This will help them understand the path forward, help them avoid detours and strengthen their confidence in the process of socialist revolution and construction!"
...
Compared with the larger situation of world revolution, the matter of "ABC" is just a small matter.
At the following plenary session of the Communist International, Mu Yuan replaced Mu Yuan and made a report on the revolutionary situation in Dayan.
The expression on her face was firm yet gentle as she cast her gaze towards the delegates attending the conference.
The representatives looked serious and intently at Mu Yuan, waiting for her report.
"Comrades," Mu Yuan said, his voice clear and powerful, "Today I will report to you on the latest situation of the Great Yan Revolution on behalf of Comrade Mu Yuan."
Holding a detailed report in her hand, she began to describe the current social, economic and political conditions of Dayan from macro to micro.
"In the past period of time, Comrade Mu Yuan went deep into the grassroots level of Dayan, especially the working class to conduct research. He witnessed the miserable lives of the workers with his own eyes and deeply understood their needs and difficulties." Mu Yuan's words were filled with deep emotion as she recounted what Mu Yuan had seen and heard among the dock workers.
She described the appearance and life of the dock workers, and how they lived in extreme poverty. She used delicate brushstrokes to depict how Mu Yuan worked and lived with them as a worker, and how she felt the strength and hope of the Dayan working class in practice.
"Faced with such a difficult situation, the workers did not sit idly by. They began to organize themselves and spontaneously established many small organizations to help each other, demonstrating the spirit of proletarian solidarity."
Then, she elaborated on Mu Yuan’s analysis and suggestions on the revolutionary situation in Dayan in three aspects: economy, politics and culture.
She pointed out that although the working class in Da Yan still had shortcomings in many aspects, they already had the potential to become the main force of the revolution.
Then she talked about the workers' strike that was taking place in the Dayan Jiujiang area.
Dark Forest: Liberating the Three-Body Problem: Chapter 153 The Communist International has arrived, and there is hope for the future of Dayan!
Mu Yuan's voice was loud and echoed in the conference room.
"The Communist International should support them!"
She proposed to use the Communist International's Dayan Affairs Bureau as a medium to provide various forms of support to the workers in Jiujiang, including materials, funds, personnel, and even weapons!
The conference hall fell silent. The delegates had different expressions. Some of them agreed with the proposal, their eyes sparkling with determination, while others were lost in thought, their brows furrowed, and their faces hesitant.
This is an issue that must be considered clearly. Revolution is not a dinner party, but a bloody and violent struggle.
Will such support undermine the strength of the working class of Dayan and encourage the arrogance of counter-revolutionaries, or will it help to strengthen the strength of the working class?
A European representative slowly stood up. His voice was steady and powerful: "Comrades, we must make careful decisions. Any action should be based on the long-term interests of the working class. We need to assess the risks and benefits and ensure that our support will not become a handle for counter-revolutionary forces."
Another young Asian representative was unwilling to back down. He said excitedly: "Are we going to watch the workers in Jiujiang being suppressed? They are fighting for their freedom and future, and they need our support! If we don't act now, how can we say that we are the vanguard of the proletariat in the future?"
Mu Yuan looked at them and took out a specific support plan document.
This included providing materials and funds through secret channels to ensure the basic living conditions of the workers. At the same time, experienced revolutionaries were sent to Jiujiang to help the workers organize and guide them in effective resistance. Weapon assistance was prepared in advance. If the situation deteriorated to the point where the workers had to arm themselves for self-defense, weapons support was immediately provided to arm the workers.
The conference hall once again fell into a heated discussion, with everyone thinking about the feasibility and possible consequences of this plan.
Seeing this, Mu Yuan said in a deep voice: "Comrade Mu Yuan, who is far away in Dayan, will personally implement this plan."
This sentence seemed to have magical power, silencing many people who held opposing opinions.
Although Mu Yuan no longer holds a position in the Communist International, his name still has an irrefutable persuasiveness.
A European representative who had originally expressed opposition put down the documents in his hand and agreed: "Since Comrade Mu Yuan is in charge, I believe this plan is feasible. We should do our best to support him and provide the workers and revolutionary organizations in Jiujiang with the help they need."
An Asian representative's eyes lit up: "Comrade Mu Yuan has accumulated rich experience in the revolutionary practice of Soviet Russia. His leadership and execution capabilities are beyond doubt. If the Jiujiang operation is carried out by Comrade Mu Yuan himself, that would be great. There is absolutely no possibility of failure."
Soon, a consensus was reached. Most of the delegates agreed with the plan implemented by Mu Yuan and decided to start preparing for the support operation immediately.
The meeting decided to send special personnel, including the former Asian representative of the Communist International [He Qing] and the former Communist International’s resident representative in Dayan [Gao Tu] as special envoys, who would be responsible for the allocation of materials, funds and personnel, as well as liaison with the revolutionary organization in Dayan and other related matters.
...
...
"Gao Tu, isn't Comrade Mu Yuan in the Magic City?"
After the meeting of the Communist International, He Qing rushed to Dayan, but when she arrived in the Magic City, she found that Mu Yuan was no longer there.
"Sister Qing, Comrade Mu Yuan has already gone to Jiujiang."
As Gao Tu explained, he handed her a newspaper reporting on the situation in Jiujiang.
He Qing took the newspaper and quickly glanced at it. The words on it were concise and clear. The local revolutionary organization "Reform Society" wrote a strike declaration for the workers and a letter of protest to the warlord government and the concession, and put forward four demands in a reasonable and orderly manner: punish the murderer, provide compensation for the dead, increase wages, and treat the workers better.
Seeing this report, she frowned and a trace of worry flashed in her eyes. Whether it was the warlords in Gan Province or Victoria, they were not good people. Would they really give in?
But soon, she regained her composure, took a deep breath, and looked at Gao Tu with a firm gaze.
"Since Comrade Mu Yuan has already gone to Jiujiang, there is no chance of any problem."
