The cell behind him was empty, with only the iron chain swaying gently in the breeze. By the time those people found out, Zhang Chen had already disappeared without a trace, along with the entire team and the priceless treasures.
This extravagant capital city eventually could not escape the fate of destruction. However, Zhang Chen perfectly realized his plan in this chaos.
"The leader is the best!" Xiao Xiangxiang snuggled in his arms and said sweetly.
Zhang Chen just smiled and said nothing. These people who thought they were extremely powerful had ultimately become pawns in his plan.
Aman held the sword tightly, her eyes firm. As the most loyal maid of the kingdom, she had witnessed too much indifference from the powerful. For the safety of the federal country, the princess married and was ridiculed.
But they trampled on her dignity.
"Release Chief Zhang Chen!" She put the sword against the eldest prince's neck, "Otherwise I will cut your head off now!"
The eldest prince was sweating profusely: "You...you dare?"
"Why shouldn't I?" A'man sneered, "You people only care about power. Do you care about the lives of the people outside?"
"Those common people and lowly people, just let them die!" the eldest prince shouted arrogantly.
"Shut up!" A'man put more force on his hands, and a trace of blood oozed out. "If it weren't for General Zhang Chen, this city would have been destroyed long ago!"
The guards around him raised their weapons but did not dare to step forward.
"Do you know?" Aman looked around, "When the zombie virus broke out, who was trying to save people? When the nobles hid behind the high walls, who risked their lives to deliver medicine?"
"Those infected civilians are just numbers in your eyes. But General Zhang Chen takes every life seriously!"
"Humph!" The second prince sneered, "A foreigner is worthy of..."
Before he could finish his words, a flying knife flew past his cheek.
"Say one more word," A'man said with cold eyes, "the next knife will be your throat."
"Hurry! Go and release General Zhang Chen!" she emphasized.
Chapter 733: Still want to be king?
The guards ran to the dungeon, but found the cells empty.
“People…people are missing!”
"what?"
A'man was stunned for a moment, then he understood and a smile appeared on his face.
“Hahaha!” She laughed out loud. “General Zhang Chen is really smart! You idiots have been fooled!”
"What do you mean?" the eldest prince asked in horror.
"What I mean is," Aman let go of him and took a few steps back, "your vault should be empty by now."
"Impossible!" The third prince rushed out.
After a while, panicked voices came one after another.
"My vault!"
"The jewels are gone!"
"The basement has been emptied!"
A'man stood there, looking at these usually arrogant and powerful people in chaos, feeling indescribably happy.
In the camp, Zhang Chen looked at the information with a frown.
"Chief," Misha asked worriedly, "are we going back to save Aman?"
Zhang Chen shook his head: "No, A'man will be fine."
He thought of the moonlit night a few days ago.
Princess Annabell stood on the balcony, the moonlight gilded her with a layer of silver. She turned and looked at Zhang Chen, her eyes flashing with complex light.
"Zhang Chen," she whispered, "Do you think this kingdom can be saved?"
Zhang Chen did not answer immediately.
"Don't comfort me," Annabelle smiled bitterly, "I grew up in the palace and have long seen through the corruption here."
"His Majesty the King is obsessed with pleasure all day long, and the Duke and Earl are corrupt," she continued, "and my brothers only know how to fight for power and profit."
Under the moonlight, this seemingly weak princess shows a different side of herself.
"You know what?" She walked closer to Zhang Chen, "When I saw you leading people to treat civilians, I cried."
"After so many years, someone finally takes people's lives seriously."
Zhang Chen listened quietly.
"I beg you," Annabelle suddenly grabbed his hand, "Save this city! Even if...even if you have to kill all those corrupt officials and overthrow this dynasty..."
"You want me to seize power?" Zhang Chen asked.
"Yes!" Annabelle said without hesitation, "Only you can save this city!"
Zhang Chen looked at this stunningly beautiful princess and suddenly understood her painstaking efforts.
"You knew that the eldest prince would rebel?"
Annabell nodded. "They are all waiting for His Majesty to die. The funny thing is, they think I am just a weak princess."
"So you choose to marry?"
"Yes," she said with a sly look in her eyes, "I need a strong external aid. And you are the best candidate."
Zhang Chen couldn't help but smile: "You little fox."
"I know you don't care about the throne," Annabelle leaned into his arms, "but please help me save those innocent people."
The memories ended, and Zhang Chen looked at the imperial city in the distance.
"Aman will be fine," he said calmly, "because there is a princess behind her."
"Master, you are wise!" Xiao Xiangxiang said admiringly, "Even the princess has been conquered by you!"
Zhang Chen laughed: "She was the one who schemed against me."
"So...what about us now?"
"According to the plan," Zhang Chen said, "When the city becomes chaotic, we will go back to clean up the mess."
He looked towards the imperial city, a meaningful smile on his face.
The show is finally about to begin.
As dusk fell, the city was in ruins.
Rotting zombies roamed the streets, tattered flags fluttered in the wind, and the once bustling streets were now only ruins.
"Everyone line up!" Zhang Chen's voice rang out on the street corner. He and the medical team set up a temporary aid station in an abandoned granary.
"Thank you... Thank you, sir..." A ragged old woman took the hot porridge, her hands shaking.
"Doctor, my daughter has a fever..." a man with a stained face said anxiously, holding the thin girl.
Doctors were busy shuttling back and forth, treating each patient. Zhang Chen personally boiled the medicine for the residents to take.
"Boom!" An explosion was heard in the distance.
"Leader!" The voice of the team member came from the communicator, "Area B has been cleared!"
"Very good," Zhang Chen responded, "Keep going, and be careful."
On the streets, the superpowers were clearing out the zombies. The fire-type superpowers were burning the zombies, the wind-type superpowers were clearing the poisonous gas, and the water-type superpowers were flushing the streets.
"It's General Zhang Chen's men!" the residents cheered.
"Thanks to them," an old man sighed, "otherwise we would have died long ago."
"I heard that the royal family escaped," someone whispered, "Only General Zhang Chen stayed to save us."
"Those nobles are usually arrogant and domineering," another person spat, "but now they are running faster than anyone else!"
Zhang Chen looked at these skinny people with a firm gaze. These were the people who were truly worth protecting.
In the distance, Misha was leading a convoy towards the northern border. Hundreds of carriages were loaded with stolen goods from corrupt officials.
"This gold and silver," Misha said as she looked at the convoy, "is enough to buy a lot of food and medicine."
"The leader really has a plan in mind," the guard exclaimed, "killing two birds with one stone."
As night fell, the campfire at the aid station remained bright.
"General Zhang Chen," a thin child pulled the corner of his clothes, "will you stay here forever?"
Zhang Chen squatted down and rubbed his head: "Yes, until everyone in the city is safe."
The child burst into laughter and said, "That's great!"
In the distance, several people with special abilities were walking over carrying supplies.
"Chief," the leading captain reported, "an underground shelter was found in the west district, with hundreds of survivors inside."
"Send people to rescue immediately," Zhang Chen stood up, "and bring enough food and medicine."
"Yes!"
In the darkness of the night, this dilapidated city gradually recovered its vitality under the leadership of Zhang Chen.
There was chaos in the palace hall.
"The granary is mine!" The chief of the royal guards waved his sword, "Who dares to steal it from me?"
"Bah!" The Minister of War sneered, "You are a civil servant, are you worthy of that?"
In the hall, the court officials who were once high and mighty were now biting each other like mad dogs.
"My father is no longer alive," the eldest prince said, holding the blood-stained sword, "I should inherit the throne!"
"Dream on!" The second prince laughed grimly, "You can't even protect your own treasury, and you still want to be king?"
The smell of blood filled the air.
"Quickly close the palace gate!" The Grand Tutor shouted from behind a pillar, "There are zombies everywhere outside!"
"The food is all in the East Courtyard!" someone shouted.
Suddenly, a group of people rushed forward, pushing and fighting. The brocade clothes were already in tatters, and the former etiquette and dignity were gone.
"Get out of here! This jerky is mine!"
"I want to occupy the imperial kitchen!"
"Who dares to touch my food storage?"
Several royal butlers hid in the corner, watching these big shots who were usually arrogant killing each other.
"Sir," a royal butler said timidly, "outside... there seems to be no movement outside..."
"Shut up!" the Minister of Revenue shouted, "You will die if you get out!"
Chapter 734 Then...then aren’t you jealous?
They clung to the palace, thinking that it was still hell outside.
Suddenly, a maid ran over and said, "Oh no! The granary in the west yard is on fire!"
"what!"
Everyone panicked.
"Someone must want to monopolize it!"
"Grab it! It'll be gone if you're too late!"
Amid the flashes of swords and sabers, bodies fell one after another, and blood stained the once glorious marble floor red.
“Hahaha!” The third prince laughed crazily, “You idiots! There’s no hope outside! We are the final winners!”
He was holding a box of gold and silver, but was stabbed through by his own guard.
"My lord, I'm sorry," the guard said expressionlessly, "I want to live too."
In the corner, an old royal butler sighed: "What a sin..."
