There were screams coming from afar. Some were the wails of the infected, some were the screams of being torn apart by zombies, and some were the desperate cries of seeing their loved ones mutate.
The air was filled with the smell of blood and decay. Crows circled over the ruins, making shrill cries from time to time.
This place has become a living hell. There are fewer and fewer living people, while the number of zombies is increasing. Every new corpse may become a new threat.
Even the will to survive was collapsing. Some chose to commit suicide, some rushed towards the zombies like crazy, and some locked themselves in a closed space and waited for death.
Zhang Chen was checking the report from Northern Xinjiang in the conference room when suddenly an intermittent voice came from the communicator.
"Chief... I'm Xiao Ai..." The voice was so weak that it was almost inaudible, "We met in the south..."
Zhang Chen stood up suddenly: "Xiao Ai? Where are you?"
There was a rustling noise coming from the communicator, mixed with faint sobs: "There are things in the shelter... They are not ordinary zombies..."
Zhang Chen's heart tightened. Xiao Ai was a superpower he had personally trained. She had a strong character and never showed weakness easily. But now her voice was filled with fear.
"Hold on, I'll send someone right away..."
"It's too late..." Xiao Ai's voice suddenly became clear, "They...they can fly..."
Communications ceased abruptly.
Zhang Chen immediately called up the surveillance footage from the south. The shelter was dead silent, with only the occasional black shadow flashing by. The ground was littered with broken limbs, and the walls were splattered with dark red blood.
"Zoom in!" he ordered.
The picture zoomed in, and a blurry figure passed in front of the camera. It had wings similar to a bat, but its body was like a human. Its eyes glowed in the darkness, and there was fresh blood at the corner of its mouth.
"What the hell is this..." Zhang Chen muttered to himself.
He immediately contacted Xu Wan in Northern Xinjiang: "Something happened in the south, I need your support."
"Understood," Xu Wan's voice remained calm, "I'll bring people over right away."
Zhang Chen contacted Mu Qing again: "Gather all the superpowers and prepare to go south."
"Yes, chief."
But Zhang Chen knew that by the time they got to the south, it would probably be too late. Xiao Ai and her team members might have already...
He clenched his fists, thinking of how Xiao Ai looked when she first joined. That stubborn little girl was always the first to rush to the front. But now...
"Damn it!" He slammed his fist on the table.
In the southern shelter, Xiao Ai curled up in a corner, her left arm broken, blood staining half of her body.
"Captain..." a team member said weakly, "Are we...going to die..."
Xiao Ai gritted her teeth and said, "No... The leader will definitely come to save us..."
Suddenly, there was a sound of flapping wings. Xiao Ai's heart almost stopped beating.
"Hide!" she whispered.
But it was too late. A dark figure dropped from the sky, opening its fang-filled mouth...
The last sound coming from the communicator was Xiao Ai's scream.
Zhang Chen's face turned pale as he listened to the recording.
He knew that the disaster in the South was far more terrible than they had imagined.
Chapter 697 Trap
Xu Wan gently pushed open Zhang Chen's door, and the moonlight shone through the window onto her soft wavy hair. She held a pile of neatly arranged clothes in her hands and carefully packed Zhang Chen's luggage.
"I don't know how long this trip south will take..." She whispered to herself, folding the clothes one by one and putting them into the suitcase.
Zhang Chen leaned against the door frame, watching Xu Wan's busy back. The moonlight outlined her graceful figure, and her long hair swayed gently with her movements.
"You don't need to bring so much," he said.
Xu Wan turned around and smiled gently: "The situation in the south is unclear now, it's always good to bring more."
She squatted down and put a thick windbreaker into the box: "This is for warmth. It should be very cold in the south now..."
Zhang Chen looked at her profile, and a little warmth rose in his heart. But he knew that his small space was fully stocked with supplies.
"That's enough," he walked forward and gently held Xu Wan's hand.
Xu Wan looked up at him with worry in her eyes: "Is it really enough? I heard that the south is now..."
"Don't worry," Zhang Chen interrupted her, "I have a way."
Xu Wan wanted to say something, but seeing Zhang Chen's determined eyes, she stopped insisting. She stood up and straightened his collar for him: "Be sure to come back safely."
Zhang Chen held her hand: "Yes."
Xu Wan leaned against his chest and whispered, "When you come back, the ranch in Northern Xinjiang will be completely built."
Zhang Chen stroked her long hair, thinking about the situation in the south. Xiao Ai's cry for help was still ringing in his ears, and those flying monsters...
"I should go," he let go of Xu Wan.
Xu Wan nodded and watched him leave. She didn't know that Zhang Chen's small space not only had sufficient supplies, but also various weapons and equipment.
Zhang Chen walked out of the room and looked back at Xu Wan who was still watching him from the door. Under the moonlight, her figure looked particularly thin.
"Wait until I come back," he said silently in his mind.
Meanwhile, in the south, the shelter was dead silent. The flying monsters circled in the darkness, waiting for new prey...
Zhang Chen clenched his fists and quickened his pace.
Zhang Chen walked out of the gate of the Northern Frontier Base. The cold wind howled and blew up the snow on the ground. He looked back at the towering city wall. Xu Wan was still standing on the tower, with her long hair fluttering in the wind.
"Take care." He said softly, then turned and stepped into the vast snowfield.
In the Xiaogu space, the supplies were neatly arranged. Zhang Chen took out a special protective suit with a thought. This was the latest achievement of the North Xinjiang Laboratory, which could resist most physical attacks.
"The South..." he muttered to himself, and Xiao Ai's last voice appeared in his mind.
Suddenly, Mu Qing's voice came from the communicator: "Leader, we have arrived at the designated location."
"Very good," Zhang Chen said, "Act as planned."
He quickened his pace, leaving a trail of deep footprints in the snow. In the distance, several helicopters were on standby.
"Chief!" Mu Qing came forward, "All personnel are in place."
Zhang Chen nodded, his eyes sweeping over the troops ready to go. These were the most elite warriors in the Northern Frontier, and each of them had a determined look on their faces.
"Let's go." He ordered briefly.
The helicopter roared into the air and flew southward. Zhang Chen sat in the cabin, closing his eyes to rest. He knew that a fierce battle was about to begin.
"Chief," Mu Qing handed over a report, "This is the latest situation in the south."
Zhang Chen opened his eyes and quickly read the report. The shelter had been completely destroyed, with only a few survivors. And those flying monsters...
"They seem to be intelligent," Mu Qing said, "and they can set traps."
Zhang Chen clenched his fists: "No matter what they are, we must destroy them."
The helicopter landed at a temporary base in the south. It was originally a military fortress, but now it has become the front line against monsters.
"Report!" A soldier ran over, "A large number of monster activities were discovered in the west area!"
Zhang Chen immediately ordered: "Everyone, prepare to fight!"
He put on his protective suit and checked his weapons. Xiaogu's space had everything he needed, but he knew that the real test had just begun.
"Chief," Mu Qing handed over a special gun, "This is newly developed in the laboratory, specially for dealing with those monsters."
Zhang Chen took the gun and said with a firm look: "Let's go."
The team quickly advanced towards the target area. In the darkness, the roar of monsters could be heard in the distance.
Suddenly, a black shadow fell from the sky. Zhang Chen quickly raised his gun and shot, and the monster fell to the ground.
"Watch out!" he yelled. "They can fly!"
More monsters came from all directions, and the battle started instantly.
Zhang Chen was shooting while observing these monsters. They were indeed intelligent and would cooperate with each other to set traps.
"Damn it!" A soldier was caught by the monster and dragged into the air.
Zhang Chen quickly took aim and shot the monster dead. The soldier fell to the ground, still in shock.
"Everyone, stay in formation!" he shouted.
The battle lasted all night. When the first rays of sunlight shone on the earth, the last monster finally fell.
Zhang Chen panted and looked at the monster corpses all over the ground. This victory was hard-won, but he knew that this was just the beginning.
"Report the casualties," he said to Mu Qing.
"Yes, chief."
Zhang Chen looked into the distance, and the outline of the shelter was looming. There, there were more monsters waiting for them.
In the northern border, Xu Wan still stood on the city wall, looking towards the south. She knew that Zhang Chen would definitely return safely.
But at this time in the south, a bigger crisis is brewing...
Zhang Chen led the team to continue advancing southward. The scene along the way was horrifying. The once prosperous city was now in ruins, with broken walls and abandoned vehicles everywhere on the streets. The air was filled with a rotten smell that made people sick.
"Be careful!" Zhang Chen suddenly shouted and pushed away the soldiers around him.
A huge supernatural beast rushed out from the ruins, its skin showing a strange metallic luster, and its eyes glowing red. Zhang Chen quickly raised his gun and shot, but the bullet bounced off it.
"Damn it!" Zhang Chen cursed, "This guy's skin is harder than steel!"
The beast let out a deafening roar, opened its bloody mouth and pounced on the team. Its teeth were like sharp daggers, flashing cold light.
"Scatter!" Zhang Chen shouted, pulling out a special dagger from his waist.
The speed of the mutant was amazing, and it pounced in front of a soldier in the blink of an eye. The soldier screamed in fear, but it was too late, the mutant bit off his neck.
"No!" Zhang Chen's eyes were bloodshot and he rushed towards the mutant beast.
He nimbly dodged the beast's sharp claws and jumped onto its back. The dagger in his hand fiercely stabbed the beast's neck, but only penetrated a little bit.
Chapter 698: Oh no! A large group of zombies are approaching us
"Roar!" The mutant beast shook its body frantically, trying to throw Zhang Chen off.
Zhang Chen held onto the beast's fur tightly, and with his other hand he pulled out a specially made grenade from his waist. He bit open the safety pin and stuffed the grenade into the beast's ear.
"Go to hell!" he shouted and jumped away quickly.
"Boom!" With a loud bang, the mutant beast's head was blown to pieces and its huge body fell to the ground with a bang.
Zhang Chen panted and looked at the mutant beast lying on the ground. He knew that this was just the beginning and there were more dangers waiting for them ahead.
"Keep going!" he shouted.
The team continued to advance southward, but not long after they went, they encountered a new obstacle.
A group of zombies emerged from the ruins, their eyes glowing with a strange green light, and their movements were much faster than those of ordinary zombies.
"There's something wrong with these zombies!" Mu Qing shouted, "They've been infected by supernatural powers!"
Zhang Chen made a quick decision: "Everyone, use special bullets!"
The battle started again. These zombies infected by superpowers were not only fast, but also incredibly strong. A soldier was caught by a zombie and was torn in half.
"Damn it!" Zhang Chen cursed angrily and kept shooting with the gun in his hand.
Suddenly, he felt a strong energy fluctuation. Looking up, he saw a huge flying monster swooping down from the sky.
"Watch out in the air!" he yelled.
The flying monster spread its huge wings, blocking out the sky. Its eyes were like two searchlights, emitting a dazzling red light. Zhang Chen quickly raised his gun and shot, but the bullet bounced off the monster.
"This guy's defense is too strong!" Mu Qing shouted.
The flying monster screamed and swooped down. Its claws were like steel knives, easily tearing open a soldier's protective clothing.
"Retreat!" Zhang Chen shouted, "Find cover!"
The team quickly hid in a nearby building. Zhang Chen leaned against the wall, breathing heavily. He knew that if they didn't come up with a solution quickly, they would probably be wiped out.
