Infinite Hunter

"Aha!" The man was quite brave. He turned around and grabbed a gun from the car. "Oh, damn! I'll give you bullets! You beasts! How dare you steal my sheep! Blue! Blue, where are you? You lazy, greedy old dog!" The guy shouted and rushed to the animal pen. The guy kicked the door open. "Hurry!" "Oh, Holy Mary..." The gunshot rang out, followed by the sound of collision, and then just the sound of rattling.
Cheng Yijiu woke up early. As expected, the bed in this damn hotel was infested with bedbugs—a rarity in China. He'd tried this world before, and the ointment he'd brought with him did indeed repel bugs and relieve muscle pain, but the remaining part of the box hadn't returned the next day. This wasn't a place Apollo could reach. Cheng Yijiu planned to get gas first, then go ask the guy who'd suggested hunting wolves.
He had already asked the hotel doorman last night and found out the guy's address. Now he was slowly driving his jeep towards the house. Then he saw more than one or two police cars parked on the side of the road. There were three officers hanging around the house, and more locals gathered to watch the fun. "Something happened?" Cheng Yijiu wondered, but wisely he didn't get out of the car to ask the cops.
Cheng Yijiu drove away and took out his telescope to peer inside. "Oh, is this a corral? Such a huge hole? Did a bear do that? A grizzly in Montana, right? Grizzlies do something like that?" Cheng Yijiu muttered as he looked. Then he saw two people carrying what looked like a body bag into a van. They were probably sending it to the local coroner for an examination—it was definitely a corpse, but judging by the bag's shape, it was hard to say how much was left inside.
"I really wish I could go over and check the scene," Cheng Yijiu thought, and at that moment, he saw a police car approaching him. The policemen who got out of the car were a middle-aged man and a young man. The other party was somewhat polite, and nodded his bowler hat with his fingers as a greeting. "Where were you last night?"
"Last night, I went to the bar for a drink, then watched a terrible movie for about fifteen minutes. Around nine o'clock, I went back to the motel to sleep. Officer, could you tell them to clean the beds? They were full of bedbugs!" Cheng Yijiu asked. "What happened last night? A murder?" He pointed at the barn with his chin. "Hey, that's none of your business," the young policeman said, while the middle-aged policeman motioned him to be quiet.
"My name is Cole, his name is Scott, and we're the officers here. Did you hear or see anything unusual last night?" Cole asked again. "Indeed," Cheng Yijiu said. "What are you doing here?" Scott said unkindly. "Ah, I'm just passing through. I like hunting, and I travel around the United States and do some hunting. Oh, and it's all legal. I apply for a license every time I go hunting."
As a Minion, this hobby was a bit out of the mainstream for Minions, but as a Minion, Cheng Yijiu's safety was acknowledged by the police. "It's okay, I wish you a good hunt," the other party ended the conversation, apparently not wanting to tell him what had happened. Naturally, there was no way Cheng Yijiu would be allowed to inspect the corral. Racial discrimination was still quite serious these days.
Cheng Yijiu wasn't about to cause trouble himself. He stared at the hole—using a telescope, of course, at maximum magnification to carefully examine the edges. "Well, judging by the cracking, it seems like an impact from the outside in, with the tear extending to the inside. This doesn't seem like something a wolf or coyote would do. At least a grizzly bear."
Chapter 3 Doubt
As for whether it was a grizzly bear, Cheng Yijiu thought it would be better to try to explore the outside. After all, such a beast would always leave footprints when it moved. He couldn't enter the scene, but he could try to expand the scope. As an experienced hunter, Cheng Yijiu felt that he still had hope.
The police cordon was set up within a radius of 20 meters centered on the houses and livestock pens of the entire ranch. The area outside was not blocked, but a young police officer was left to guard it. Fortunately, his task was mainly to prevent others from breaking in. He didn't care about the harmless little yellow man Cheng Yijiu lying on the ground outside the cordon for inspection.
Although he didn't care, he was curious. The police officer walked up to Cheng Yijiu and said, "Hey, man. What are you looking for? We don't have General Tso's chicken here." In fact, the meaning of his words was quite racist, but Cheng Yijiu also understood that the other party had no ill intentions. This was just a normal situation in this era.
"I'm looking for bear footprints." Cheng Yijiu stood up straight and answered. He was even half a head taller than the police officer in front of him. Cheng Yijiu pointed to the hole not far away and said, "The only thing that can do this is a grizzly bear, right? So I'm looking for bear footprints, and then..." Cheng Yijiu took aim and pulled the trigger. "Pop. I have a specimen of a man-eating bear. Maybe it's worth a lot of money."
The officer laughed heartily. "All right, sir, you can go find your bear, but please don't step in here." Then the man walked away. Cheng Yijiu, using the hole as his center, walked around it 180 degrees, a fifty-meter radius, and frowned. "Strange, there aren't even any bear footprints here."
There really weren't any bear footprints, especially not large ones. Cheng Yijiu did find quite a few livestock footprints, from horses to pigs, cattle, and sheep. He even found footprints that might have been from dogs or coyotes, but no bear footprints. Cheng Yijiu stood up straight and looked at the hole. "How strange! What a shame I can't go in and take a look."
It's definitely not possible now. If you want to go in and take a look, you might have to wait at least several days, until the town's public security police are no longer squatting, but Cheng Yijiu probably doesn't have that much time. "I can only say that this may not be a bear. If it's a gray wolf... Impossible, it's simply impossible." What other beast in North America could cause such a situation?
Maybe he should go and find out the details - at this time, Cheng Yijiu felt that his identity as a yellow man was very inconvenient, but maybe he could find a local reporter to cover this matter and spend a little money or something...
The reporter covering the beast attack and murder case in this county was a woman. Cheng Yijiu spent some time searching newspapers and radio stations to find the reporter. "Marisa? She's a woman?" Cheng Yijiu drove to find the woman to get information. "Wait a minute, let me gather some information. If this woman doesn't have any exclusive information, wouldn't it be a waste of money?"
The hunt would last at least a week, plenty of time to gather intelligence. "I finally understand why Marissa is limited to reporting in the county newspaper. With her skills, she wouldn't be able to make it to New York or Philadelphia." He looked at the clippings in his hand, rambling on and on, but ultimately, he could summarize very little. The photos of the scene were blurry in the black-and-white newspaper—after all, it wasn't the high-definition printing presses of the future.
The photo was from inside the pen, showing the mess inside, but nothing else, and the blurry nature of it made it useless. The report stated that some kind of ferocious beast had broken through the back wall, entered the pen, and first killed the guard dog and ate most of it, then killed most of the livestock in the pen and began to eat.
The victim was discovered at night. He entered the corral and fired a shot. The bullet was found, proving he missed, and he was killed by the beast. Based on Cheng Yijiu's recollection of the body bag he saw, this unfortunate man should have been like his dog, with not much left.
"The use of an unknown beast proves that the police haven't found any traces of a bear." Cheng Yijiu thought for a long time, and then he drove to the town where Marissa was staying temporarily. "Excuse me, is this Ms. Marissa's residence?" Cheng Yijiu knocked on the door. Someone must have looked in front of the door from inside, and then the door opened a little, revealing the face of a woman with messy hair.
"That's me. What do you want to see me about?" The woman smelled strongly of cigarettes. Cheng Yijiu took out a few US dollars with a smile and said, "Hello, I have some information about wild animal attacks that I want to ask you. I'm a hunter, specializing in hunting those prey with 'stories'." The woman definitely didn't look good. She looked at the US dollars with contempt.
But the next moment she opened the door and said, "Let's go to the cafe and talk. This is not enough."
Cheng Yijiu also happened to be craving something to eat. He had about $3,000 in his wallet and backpack for this mission, so he figured five hundred wouldn't be a problem gathering information. This woman didn't meet Cheng Yijiu's aesthetic standards in any way: she was short and plump, with messy, greasy hair. From what Cheng Yijiu could tell, she also had a pretty bad case of body odor.
Fortunately, collecting the information only cost three hundred dollars. Cheng Yijiu then remembered that it was 1971, and a few hundred dollars was already a very good side income. Unfortunately, the "unpublished information" in hand was obviously not worth the price, because there was no more than what was in the newspapers and radio, and of course there was no police autopsy report.
Luckily, the other party had given Cheng Yijiu a few photos of the scene, so the three hundred yuan wasn't a big deal. Cheng Yijiu drove to a field and set up a tarp on the roof of his car between two trees, creating a relatively simple tent. Here, he began to carefully analyze the photos, starting with a photo of the scene that had been printed on a newspaper. Cheng Yijiu looked at the chaotic scene.
"I can't make out anything at all. The blood is splattered everywhere, and the ground is covered with the cops' boots. I can't see any decent footprints at all. The film negative of this photo is not big enough, and I don't have the time to enlarge it." Fortunately, the second photo gave Cheng Yijiu some clues. It was the hair on the edge of the hole. These hairs were black in the color photo. Cheng Yijiu instinctively thought that this was not bear hair.
Werewolves were even less likely. Cheng Yijiu hadn't found any large canine footprints, and was there any mystery in this world? He wasn't sure, but he leaned towards the opposite. The third to sixth photos were all close-up shots of the scene. Cheng Yijiu looked at a sunken mark on the ground and rubbed his chin for a long time... "I think this is a little unlikely... a bit too exaggerated."
Chapter 4 What
What Cheng Yijiu saw was a rather large, arc-shaped depression, blurred and trampled into the chaotic jumble of shoe prints in the photo. "The edges are broken, and I can't make out anything, so I can only guess it's crescent-shaped. It's huge, almost bigger than a human footprint." After confirming the possible trace, Cheng Yijiu lit a campfire. Camping out like this was actually quite dangerous, considering the beast that killed the man was still roaming around.
The night was quite cold. Cheng Yijiu used fallen trees as chairs. A broth of rice, canned meat, and dehydrated vegetables cooked on a campfire. His rifle was at his side, ready to fire at any moment. In the darkness beyond the firelight, Cheng Yijiu could clearly see pairs of glowing eyes. They belonged to opportunistic coyotes or raccoons—one of the two, anyway.
They must have been lured in by the aroma of the heating food, but Cheng Yijiu didn't want to waste a single bullet on either of them. So, after quickly finishing his meal, he washed the dishes and put them away. He then looked at the photos over and over again. Finally, he climbed into the jeep, found an insulation blanket, covered himself, and fell into a vigilant sleep. "What a shame! That dog sculpture is completely useless," he muttered before falling asleep.
Sleeping in the car was warmer, even without the canopy or doors, but it was enough to keep out the cold from the ground. Before going to bed, Cheng Yijiu even heated up a canvas bucket of water, washed his feet, and then washed and dried his socks. Washing your feet is definitely best in the wild, as keeping the inside of your shoes dry is very beneficial to your health. Will the beast come? Cheng Yijiu felt he could stay alert.
The night passed uneventfully, and the discarded cans were licked clean. After washing up, Cheng Yijiu took his rifle and patrolled the area again. He found several raccoon tracks, but none of the tracks he'd seen in the photos. Perhaps he needed some bait, like half a pig, but that would attract more coyotes... Cheng Yijiu drove over and bought half a pig directly from the farmer in town.
He used chains to hang the pork from a tree, about three meters above the ground. At that height, it would be difficult for a coyote to jump and steal it. Perhaps a raccoon could climb down the chain from the tree to eat it? But how much could a raccoon eat? This was also used to lure the beast. "If it attracts a grizzly bear, it's just bad luck." Cheng Yijiu's actions attracted the attention of the local police. "Hey, you're really planning to hunt animals here. If you don't have a license, I think I'll have to arrest you."
"I've done it, Sheriff." Cheng Yijiu took out the license he bought at the local forestry department office, "Look, it allows me to hunt a grizzly bear, and coyotes and raccoons are not on the list. I shouldn't be arrested by you for hunting them." The police officer named Michael smiled, "Do you want to hunt that man-eating beast? I wish you success." The police seemed to have no intention of killing the beast, perhaps because they had to go through the procedures?
The next day, Cheng Yijiu saw many hunters and police officers, divided into several teams, searching the area. However, Cheng Yijiu found it difficult to approach them—they were all white. If he approached them, he would likely be discriminated against. In rural America at that time, if he was discriminated against, he would be arrested. The rural sheriff was the real deal...
So Cheng Yijiu just sat and watched. He now had some ideas about the beast he might be hunting, and it seemed he needed these people to verify it. He had asked the officer from earlier, but he refused to tell him what kind of beast it was. Cheng Yijiu watched the men disperse. He also slowly began to pack up, rolling up the tarp and other things again, and drove the jeep after them at ten kilometers per hour.
He was about two kilometers away from the group, driving and stopping, occasionally standing on the car to watch through binoculars. Finally, he stopped. "It's quite lively up ahead." Cheng Yijiu heard the sound of gunfire, a continuous stream of gunfire. He pulled the car to a higher point, stood on the hood, and picked up the binoculars. The first thing he saw was someone firing in the distance, probably killing a few coyotes, and a black animal lying on the ground, but he couldn't see what it was.
Cheng Yijiu only saw this through his telescope. When he turned to the side, he noticed something moving. He put down the telescope and rubbed his eyes, then raised it again to adjust the magnification. "Holy crap!" he cursed. "What the hell is this?" He thought back to the beasts he had hunted before, but found no words to describe it. If he had to say it, was it a wild boar?
It looked like a wild boar, but larger. It was moving through the valley, and its exact appearance was unclear. Cheng Yijiu recognized it as a wild boar from its tail and shoulders. "Maybe this thing is the second generation of a domesticated pig that has been reborn into the wild? I remember that domesticated pigs can grow much larger than wild boars after being reborn into the wild," Cheng Yijiu thought. The creature was moving through the valley at a remarkably fast speed, charging towards the police officers and hunters.
It was not until this time that Cheng Yijiu could see clearly what the head of this thing looked like. His first feeling was, "It's big, with a really thick jaw. The head is relatively flat, but the mouth is really big, and those fangs, is this thing a wild boar?" Cheng Yijiu began to doubt his previous judgment again. This thing looks like a wild boar, but it looks more like some kind of radiation mutant. There are warts on its face that look like bone spurs. Is this what a wild boar looks like?
Anyway, this thing was incredibly large, comparable to a cow, and taller than a man at the shoulder—this was revealed when the monster crashed into them and the people finally spotted it and turned around to compare. Cheng Yijiu jumped into the jeep, quickly shifted gears, and rushed forward. He drove while holding a telescope in one hand, completely unconcerned about whether he would be hit or thrown into the air.
The thing bit a cop, nearly severing him in half. The others screamed like schoolgirls, and the gunfire was chaotic. Cheng Yijiu threw the binoculars aside. He had nearly flipped his car just now. He quickly bent over while driving, and a stray bullet hit his jeep. None of the guys shot at the monster so close, but instead, a stray bullet hit Cheng Yijiu, who was at least a kilometer away.
Fortunately, the force was not strong and only left a shadow on the jeep's exterior. Cheng Yijiu stepped on the accelerator and kept getting closer. The monster also rushed around and then ran away.
Chapter 5 Decadence
A jeep was just a jeep, after all, and its off-road capabilities weren't particularly impressive. So when the monster sped away along the hilly ridge, Cheng Yijiu couldn't catch up. He couldn't even get within effective range. The monster was incredibly fast, both injuring and fleeing. Cheng Yijiu felt it was no slower than a horse. Judging by its speed as it ran down the mountain road, it could probably reach around 40 kilometers per hour.
One redneck and one American cop were killed, and three were injured. The unfortunate hunter who died had been bitten almost to pieces in the chest, the wound looking horrific. The least injured of the three had sprained their ankle in their panic, another had broken an arm after being grazed by the monster, and the last had been gored by the monster, though not directly, and still vomiting blood. One of the two cars they were driving was damaged, so the remaining one quickly drove to the hospital with the injured.
Someone did stay, a cop. Before the car drove off, he radioed in to report the situation. "Giant monster, I don't know what it is, but Bill's dead. Carterham and the others are going to the hospital," he said in a panic. He wanted to run, but the car was too crowded. A broken-down car needed repairs before it could be driven. Fortunately, Cheng Yijiu was there. To avoid irritating the guy, Cheng Yijiu stopped fifty meters away.
The man also saw Cheng Yijiu, and now he had no racial discrimination and just waved his arms. Cheng Yijiu drove closer, and the officer named Johnny was about to cry, "Hurry up, let's go back to town." The man was probably scared to death, and the body was still there. "I think we'd better stay here and wait for the main force to come." Instead, Cheng Yijiu tried to calm him down, "Come on, have a drink and calm down."
Cheng Yijiu gave the guy a small miniature bottle of pure whiskey, hoping a little alcohol would calm him down. Cheng Yijiu carefully recalled the beast he had seen. First, it was larger than a bison, and its head was particularly large, like a scaled-up wild boar. The bumps on its face made it look like a warthog. The tusks weren't clearly visible, but the marks on the carcass suggested it was terrifying.
Officer Johnny calmed down after downing some whiskey. The key was that he was in a car ready to flee at any moment. "I knew it was bad! Damn United Chemical! It must be their sewage that caused the wild boar mutation!" the officer cursed. Fortunately, the sirens sounded, and several vehicles arrived at the scene one after another. However, some people hadn't been able to reunite elsewhere.
Cheng Yijiu suddenly became a completely unimportant person again. He had no intention of intervening in the conversation. He squatted on the ground, rifle in hand, observing the traces on the ground. They were like crescent-shaped footprints facing each other, but the size of a small basin. Cheng Yijiu felt that the creature was probably not a wild boar, at least not a mutant wild boar. There were pigs, but they were the second generation of wild domestic pigs. He remembered that in the documentary, after digging up the skull of a shot pig, it was found that this creature was only about 200 kilograms.
Hunters who boast about their kills tend to exaggerate their size. They claim the pig Sila weighs about 800 kilograms, but in reality, it's only a little over a quarter. The monster Cheng Yijiu saw must have weighed more than a ton. This wasn't just any wild boar, but a pig-like even-toed ungulate of this size had only appeared in North America 25 million years ago.
"How could this thing survive until now? Impossible. There must be a population, right? You're talking about something like Jurassic Park? Come on, it's only 1971. I'm more likely to believe it was done by aliens than to believe it was cloned." Cheng Yijiu's mind was in a tizzy. He couldn't figure it out. If it was really a Entelodon, how could it have survived for 25 million years? Did the local Indians have similar legends?
It was impossible to search now, so the only thing to do was to chase this monster - hopefully there was only one, because if there were a group it would be really troublesome. Cheng Yijiu listened to the meaningless cursing and howling of the group. The dead guy was wrapped up and ready to be sent away, while the rednecks and cops started to go crazy again when they saw more people. At this time, gunshots were heard in the distance, so the group drove over to the other side again, howling, and Cheng Yijiu had to follow - after all, his mission was probably to hunt this beast.
And it is certain that this beast is the one that caused the previous case. The unlucky guy was indeed eaten by this monster - just now, Cheng Yijiu finally got some information from Officer Johnny. The unlucky old guy was almost eaten up, and the remaining body parts only weighed about one gallon... Of course, there was also his dog. The old dog probably only had a little fur left.
The car drove past in a chaotic manner, and continuous gunfire was heard on the road. The gunfire stopped before arriving at the destination. When Cheng Yijiu arrived, he found that the group of people had turned into quails again... They looked limp. Cheng Yijiu looked and saw that the ground was a mess again, this time even worse than before, with torn torn bodies everywhere. Of course, there was no trace of the monster again. It must have killed a few people here and ran away.
"They're a bunch of losers, most likely just missed again." While the men were collecting the body parts, Cheng Yijiu quickly scanned the area, hoping to find any signs of the monster being injured, like drops of blood on the ground or stains on the bushes. Sadly, there were none. He did recognize the monster's footprints, though, so Cheng Yijiu ignored them and drove straight to follow them.
This time, the monster's path was relatively flat, ensuring the jeep could keep up. His departure went unnoticed by the other men, who were now like headless flies. Their initial frenzy vanished, and they all thought about packing up and returning home as quickly as possible. The footprints left by a beast weighing over a ton were still quite clear, and they were fresh enough to be followed.
After a series of stops and starts, Cheng Yijiu finally reached a hill—the jeep couldn't climb any higher, so he had no choice but to park, grab his weapon, and pursue the creature on foot. He even saw feces along the way, but Cheng Yijiu couldn't touch it to determine the likely time. Based on his estimation of the last gunshot, the monster's footprints hadn't been there for more than forty minutes. How far could the creature have gotten in forty minutes?
Cheng Yijiu went up the mountain and then cursed. It turned out that the other side of the mountain was rocky, with gravel and big rocks. The footprints were almost indistinguishable. Cheng Yijiu was too lazy to go down. He turned around and drove back to the place where he had hung half a pork. Maybe there would be another chance there.
Chapter 6 Ambush
Wild boars can be said to be opportunists and scavengers - they will gnaw on the corpses of dead animals, and their domesticated species are even the best props for destroying corpses... The half piece of pork that Cheng Yijiu hung on the tree has begun to rot, and there are fly eggs and a large number of maggots on the surface.
These little creatures had already created sunken pits in the pork's surface, their digestive enzymes turning the meat into a semi-fluid mass, and plump maggots rolled happily in the broth. Judging by the footprints under the pork, the coyotes had been there numerous times, but they couldn't get to the meat. The bears didn't seem to be around yet, so Cheng Yijiu parked the car some distance away and climbed another tree.
He had already chosen a spot to hang the pork, perfectly visible from the tree Cheng Yijiu had chosen, and only about twenty meters away. Cheng Yijiu climbed up a branch about six or seven meters above the ground and hoisted up the other items—a tarp, a canteen of dry food, and finally a hand warmer he had purchased after arriving.
The temperature wasn't high at night, so a hand warmer would help one be more agile. "Asbestos burners have a long lifespan and are cheap, but unfortunately, their production is banned," Cheng Yijiu sighed. For now, he could only wait and see, hoping this rotting meat would attract a target. After all, paleontological data showed that the entelodon was also a scavenger, at least not one that would be averse to eating this half-rotten meat.
Cheng Yijiu secured himself to the branch and used a rope to stretch a tarpaulin over his head. The draped tarpaulin blocked the wind on three sides, keeping him warmer and protected from the nighttime rain. Not long after, Cheng Yijiu spotted coyotes. These skinny creatures were circling under the tree, trying several times to get their forelimbs on the trunk, but it was impossible for them to climb up the tree.
The mountain lion didn't come, probably because it preferred fresh meat. The raccoon did climb up the tree, but it also had difficulty climbing over the chain to the meat. Cheng Yijiu watched all this, holding his rifle. He had cleared the bushes and some branches from the trees so that the moonlight could shine through the treetops to this place.
Cheng Yijiu fell into a doze, and soon he was awakened by a certain smell. Under the moonlight, a huge bear was standing up and trying to dig out the pork with its claws. It actually tore off a few pieces, but more maggots fell on the bear's head and body like snow.
Cheng Yijiu watched the bear clumsily clawing at its prey. He didn't raise his gun to fire a shot at it because there was no need. He'd hunted enough bears, and this one was nothing special. "Just an ordinary grizzly bear," Cheng Yijiu thought, recalling the books he'd read. Did he remember that the Wanchixiong's brain was about the size of a tennis ball?
This means that these creatures mostly rely on instinct to survive, and they don't have much intelligence to speak of—much dumber than pigs. Pigs' IQs are among the highest among animals other than humans... The fact that so many of those guys were killed by this animal probably only proves that they are much dumber than pigs. Cheng Yijiu has always believed that the IQs of inland rednecks in the United States are very low, especially those who believe in evangelicalism.
This was just one more example of how these people, with their low IQ and prejudiced minds, had died. It was only natural now that so many of them had died. The bear patiently dug for over an hour, even climbing up the tree and preparing to crawl along the branches. This posed a dilemma for Cheng Yijiu. "Should we just kill it?" Cheng Yijiu was also struggling.
If he shot the bear dead, tonight's hunt would be over. He didn't think the monster would come back again—no matter how stupid he was, there was a limit. He wasn't an American college student. The bear climbed onto a branch, and the branch couldn't bear the weight and cracked. Cheng Yijiu sighed and thought, "Forget it, just kill it. One bullet will do at this distance."
A sudden, loud snorting sound startled even Cheng Yijiu, and the bear was even more frightened. The creature quickly curled up into a ball and wrapped itself around the tree. Cheng Yijiu watched as the bear clung to the trunk with its forelimbs, not daring to move. Sure enough, the perfect-toothed boar had arrived. From this distance, Cheng Yijiu could see it clearly in the moonlight.
It really looks like a wild boar, with long mane on its back. Its head is exactly the same proportion as a wild boar, but larger and with a thicker jaw. The fangs in its mouth are also quite terrifying. Anyway, Cheng Yijiu feels that no matter what kind of land beast is alive, it will die on the spot if it is bitten by this mouth.
The massive beast also placed its forelimbs on the tree trunk, trying its best to straighten itself up and bite the pork. Unlike the useless bear, this monster actually bit half of the pork, then pulled it down, breaking the thick branch along with it. Only then did Cheng Yijiu wake up and remember that he should shoot instead of just watching.
He raised his rifle. No matter how ferocious the perfect-toothed boar was, any carbon-based creature couldn't withstand the power of his Magnum rifle bullets. At a distance of about twenty meters, Cheng Yijiu couldn't miss, so he took quick aim and fired decisively. The perfect-toothed boar was gnawing on the fallen pork, even ignoring the chains that bound it. Cheng Yijiu aimed at the perfectly exposed side of the perfect-toothed boar.
Cheng Yijiu's plan was to shoot the bear in the heart, killing him instantly. He pulled the trigger, his body jolted slightly, and amidst the dull crack of the gun, the powerful bullet flew out. The beast then shuddered, then grabbed the pork and slammed it against the tree, nearly knocking the bear off its feet. It then ran off with the pork in its mouth.
Cheng Yijiu didn't even have time to fire a second shot. When he pulled the bolt to eject the shell and reload the gun, the thing had already run away. The big tree opposite was shaking, and soon he saw the bear fell to the ground and also ran away quickly. At night, Cheng Yijiu didn't want to get down from the tree to chase it. He didn't want to die for the time being. Holding the gun, Cheng Yijiu decided to solve this problem after daybreak - "Did I hit it? Why does it look like that guy is fine?" He was a little doubtful about his shooting skills, "Impossible? How could I miss it at such a close distance?"
Twenty meters away, the target was so huge, how could he miss? Cheng Yijiu fell asleep in self-doubt, and the sunlight shining on his face woke the hunter.
Chapter 7 Tracking
Cheng Yijiu, waking up, scanned his surroundings through binoculars. Finding no threat, he untied his safety rope, folded up his tarp, and climbed down the tree. He stood where the monster had left, observing the hoofprints on the ground. "I'll follow these hoofprints after I get back to the car and restock." Cheng Yijiu didn't believe the beast could be active all day long; he knew he could definitely catch up if he followed it.
After replenishing his water and food, Cheng Yijiu gathered himself and returned to the mountain to pursue. He followed hoof prints and broken branches. "It's already a spider web..." Cheng Yijiu muttered, looking at the hoof prints on the ground. He was now moving around the bushes—just as he had expected, this beast was still just a beast, its path was regular. Like its descendants, the wild boar, it had a habitual path.
At least from Cheng Yijiu's perspective, this animal path had likely been used more than once. From the broken branches to the hoof prints on the ground, it was clear that the beast had likely passed through it multiple times over the past few days. It wasn't just the perfect-toothed boar that used this path; grizzly bears and coyotes also used it. Cheng Yijiu even saw hoof prints from numerous herbivores. Animals, too, didn't like difficult paths; they had established paths for their normal activities.
Cheng Yijiu walked all morning, never losing sight of the monster. Its massive size left relatively clear footprints, and thankfully, this wasn't a gravel beach. He took out his map and mapped it. Despite walking all morning, he was still less than two kilometers from his starting point—the route was a haphazard one, with many backtracks. He saw deer and wild boar, and even once, a grizzly bear from a distance.
At noon, Cheng Yijiu ate and drank while walking—this was how human ancestors did it tens of thousands of years ago, chasing and killing prey one after another. He found broken bones, with bits of flesh and blood clinging to them. Cheng Yijiu didn't want to use the barrel of his gun to rummage through them; he picked them up with a branch. Before squatting down to check, Cheng Yijiu first looked around carefully, making sure there wasn't a chance a ferocious beast would jump out just as he was squatting down to check.
It was a rib that had been bitten. Cheng Yijiu observed the tooth marks on it and the footprints left around it. "Bear?" The footprints looked like those of a bear. The tooth marks were messy. At least Cheng Yijiu compared them with the broken parts and found that they did not look like bear bite marks. "Alas, I still lack experience. I can't distinguish tooth marks right away. Maybe I should find a way to study forensic medicine in the future? Maybe studying biology at my own expense would be a good idea."
Anyway, let's keep tracking. We're now in a hollow on a hill. The ground here is muddy and can leave huge footprints quite clearly. There are many bushes ahead. Could the monster be among them? And Cheng Yijiu actually saw it - in the bushes about a hundred meters away, the monster had crushed a large area of grass and was rolling there, as if it was resting.
It was already past three in the afternoon, and Cheng Yijiu had been chasing the beast for almost the entire day. He grabbed his gun with his left hand and used the telescope with his right to observe. "Damn it! Did I really miss?!" He saw a clear wound on one side of the body, but it was hard to tell if the other side was injured because it was pressed to the ground. He hadn't seen any blood along the way, and the monster was still moving, which meant it wasn't dead at all.
After lowering the binoculars, Cheng Yijiu slowly approached his target—he planned to fire his weapon when he was about seventy meters away. At that distance, the scorpion's massive size made it possible to aim. Next time, if he knew it was after the seventies, Cheng Yijiu would definitely bring an optical sight. The beast never got up, its rear end facing Cheng Yijiu. He walked slowly, crouching low, and it took him ten minutes to close in on the beast, about seventy meters away.
Cheng Yijiu, still half-kneeling to form a stable triangle, aimed at the monster's hind legs. The hunter held his breath and pulled the trigger. His body trembled slightly, and Cheng Yijiu quickly pulled the bolt with his right hand to reload the rifle. He waited a moment. The first shot must have hit the target. The monster jumped up as if it had been electrocuted, and the strange cry could be heard even from seventy meters away.
The beast was circling, perhaps it hadn't yet determined where its enemy was. Cheng Yijiu suspected that its eyesight was probably average. Besides, Cheng Yijiu was wearing hunting camouflage, so Wan Chixiong might not have the color discrimination to distinguish him from the background. "Huh? That's really stupid." Cheng Yijiu didn't care and fired another shot at the circling Wan Chixiong. The monster now knew the direction and rushed straight towards Cheng Yijiu.
The third shot was fired directly at the monster, followed by the fourth. By then, the Wanchixi had rushed to within twenty meters of Cheng Yijiu. Cheng Yijiu could see its furious eyes, its fang-filled mouth, and the spit gushing from it. He still didn't know if he had hit it. How could this thing still be so energetic? At ten meters away, Cheng Yijiu suddenly dove sideways and rolled, and the monster rushed past him directly by the sole of his shoe.
Cheng Yijiu decisively fired his last shot, a shot he was completely certain had hit the monster in the side. The gun was temporarily useless after that, so Cheng Yijiu casually pulled out his double-barreled shotgun and hunting knife, perhaps there was still a chance. This time, Cheng Yijiu saw that the monster was bleeding, with blood oozing from several places on its body. "Is it so hard? How ferocious must a beast be to be able to catch something like this?" Cheng Yijiu prepared himself.
The Wanchi boar pounced at Cheng Yijiu. As a predator, it wasn't very good. Its limbs weren't designed for hunting, and it struggled to control its prey, relying entirely on its massive jaws. Cheng Yijiu moved quickly, sideways. This creature couldn't turn that quickly. But firing a shotgun at its skull wasn't a good idea, as its skull was almost certainly very solid.
The monster was bleeding profusely, and now one could finally see a large amount of blood on the ground. Cheng Yijiu was fighting with the monster at a very close distance. The foul smell kept pouring out, and finally Cheng Yijiu was forced to go around to the side. He decisively raised his gun and fired two shots at once. The large lead bullets blasted into the monster at a distance of less than three meters.
Chapter 8 Interference
This time, it was clear to the naked eye: the large lead pellets pierced the beast's trunk, sending a shower of blood and tissue fragments. But Cheng Yijiu instinctively felt that at this distance, the lead pellets hadn't penetrated very deeply. The monster's subcutaneous tissue might contain connective tissue or subcutaneous bone, and combined with its thick skin and fat, this perfect-toothed boar's defenses were formidable.
"In the end I have to rely on a knife to solve the problem, damn it! This is too thrilling!" Adrenaline was secreted in large quantities, and Cheng Yijiu was very excited while cursing - this was another life-and-death battle, and he had to use a knife to deal with the big guy in front of him who was comparable to a rhinoceros, which was probably better than dealing with the Nemean lion before.
"One day, I'll have to use a knife to finish off the Tyrannosaurus Rex..." Although he said this, Cheng Yijiu's movements were surprisingly swift. He always kept himself on the side of the beast - the beast's belt was quite stiff, and it wasn't easy to turn quickly on all fours, especially since the four legs looked quite slender in proportion to its body size...
Dust was flying all over the ground. Cheng Yijiu wanted to seize an opportunity to jump onto the back of the monster. This was almost like dancing with the god of death. The Wanchi Boar fed on carrion and had a foul odor on its body. The terrifying big mouth was always less than one meter away from Cheng Yijiu, or even only twenty or thirty meters away. If he was bitten by accident, Cheng Yijiu would say goodbye to this world.
Up close, this creature's jaws were much thicker than those of its wild boar cousins, meaning they could accommodate larger muscles. This was why this perfect-toothed boar could easily tear several men apart—a single bite, and they were in two. Amidst the dust, Cheng Yijiu seized his opportunity, leaping to his feet and grabbing the perfect-toothed boar's mane. He then flipped over and mounted it.
This required a powerful reflex, as the scorpionfish, like its wild boar cousin, could roll over. So if this clumsy beast could even think of rolling over, Cheng Yijiu would have to leap out immediately. Normally, this type of beast wouldn't roll over to fight an enemy, as their intelligence wouldn't support it.
When an enemy appears on its back, the only thing this monster can do is jump and charge.
The hunting knife in Cheng Yijiu's hand had a blade only 20 centimeters long, which was considered long for a hunting knife. However, he was still a little worried that he wouldn't be able to inflict fatal damage to the Wanchixun. One way was to attack the eyes and pierce the brain to end the fight. Of course, another option was to gut the beast.
This way, it's easy to get a blade tangled, and you could easily lose your knife. The beast's body was incredibly tough, like it was covered in armor. One could imagine how powerful the monsters that hunted the toothed boar must have been. Cheng Yijiu lay on the monster's back, enduring the stench and holding himself firmly in place. The toothed boar was leaping wildly, and Cheng Yijiu's tiger-like balance was all that was keeping him going.
Cheng Yijiu stabbed the monster's neck with his right hand. "It's so hard. It only penetrated about ten centimeters before it got stuck." Cheng Yijiu exclaimed. With his current arm strength, the power of a stab would not be much worse than a bullet, but it could only cause such damage. He shook the handle of the knife to create a bigger wound.
"We still have to try to sever the blood vessels and trachea. Oh, damn it!" Cheng Yijiu suddenly lost his balance and was thrown into the air. He quickly adjusted his body shape in the air and landed on the ground. As soon as he landed, he rolled to avoid the monster's big mouth and once again grabbed a side position. This made Cheng Yijiu sweat all over his body, and he almost died.
The ground, mingled with blood and dirt, had formed a dark red. This Wanchixiong had lost a lot of blood—the seven bullets it had taken weren't in vain, especially the two bullets in its buttocks and legs, which had slowed it down and even slowed it down. The blood loss slowed the monster down as time passed.
Cheng Yijiu watched the beast snort and shake its head. He knew that due to blood loss, the body temperature of the perfect-toothed boar was beginning to drop, its mind was becoming unclear, and its body was weakening. His chance had come. Cheng Yijiu's clothes were now torn in several places, where he had almost been bitten by the monster. He cut the clothes in time and even injured his hand.
The hunting knife also had a problem—the feel of it stabbing and cutting again indicated that the blade was a bit blunt. This perfect-toothed boar truly had subcutaneous bone, which had caused some wear and tear on the blade. By now, Cheng Yijiu was a bit breathless, and the monster across from him kept shaking its head. Indeed, they were now face to face, three or four meters apart.
