Although Jobs' original intention was to promote his image processing computer and sell hardware, he wanted to compete with Apple, the company he founded but was driven out of, and avenge his previous humiliation.
Who knew that things in the world would always turn out so well by chance? The profit from making an animated film would take forever to sell just the hardware. This forced Pixar to pivot and deviate from its main business to make animation.
Now you know why Steve Jobs was willing to sell Pixar and was so determined to return to Apple. He couldn't compete with the Disney guys when it came to animation; hardware was his forte.
In short, this represents an irreversible trend in the use of computers in film. Furthermore, after five years of development, Pixar Animation Studios has likely mastered a number of computer-generated filmmaking techniques.
Fortunately, they were working on computer-animated films and hadn't yet truly ventured into the digitalization of films. But Henry, who had decided to enter this field on a whim, was acutely aware of the urgent need for time to succeed.
So when Henry heard the equipment director's speech, who was just short of asking Tony Stark for help, he just smiled smugly.
"You don't think Mr. Tony Stark hired me here just to collect a salary and not do anything, do you? I've already made some progress in meeting the requirements for upgrading the camera equipment. I need everyone to pool their wisdom and make things even better.
"The relevant equipment is in my car. When I visited the company earlier, I saw an unused studio. People from the equipment department can go over there and wait, and ask a few more engineers to come watch. I'll take a few people back to my car to move the things."
"Directors of other departments may proceed according to the decisions made in today's meeting. The relevant details are contained in the document that has been returned to you. If anyone is free and interested, please come to the studio to observe."
Henry also acted decisively. After giving the order, he immediately sent away the administrative staff waiting outside the meeting room, leaving only one or two people to clean up the room.
A group of people pulled a trailer to the parking lot and unloaded Henry's Cadillac's homemade photography equipment, including a projector, which he had built to train Charlize Theron's acting skills.
However, he did not bring the handmade computer with him as the post-production equipment. Instead, he installed the software on a Stark i486 computer he bought more than four years ago and moved it to the company.
When a group of people pulled the equipment to the designated studio, almost all the executives who had been in the meeting room were there, and there were even a few more.
Today was a demonstration of firepower, so Henry certainly wouldn't deliberately send people back to their posts. Even if he didn't need them to flatter him, he needed more people to spread the news of the new equipment.
Several bald engineers, their eyes sparkling, gathered around Henry's homemade device. Since many parts were missing casing and the connecting wires were exposed, it looked like an unfinished product.
But it was this kind of mechanical-feeling equipment that most attracted the engineers' attention. They habitually wanted to understand the equipment in front of them, naming the functions and parts brands they could identify one by one, like a treasure trove.
After a quick inventory, they were shocked to find that they had no idea what most of the parts on this homemade camera were used for.
But Henry didn't rush to explain. Instead, he set up the camera himself and connected the projector to the computer he had brought.
After all, the office wasn't like home, so finding a white wall for a projection background wasn't easy. Luckily, Stark Pictures, a company that specialized in film equipment, was able to temporarily secure a projection screen from their warehouse, making that a breeze.
By the time the curtain was set up, Henry had finished assembling the equipment. He hadn't asked anyone else to do it because it would have been better for him to do it himself than to teach them. There would be plenty of opportunities for future research. Right now, everyone was eager to see the results.
When all the equipment was ready, Henry clapped his hands to attract everyone's attention. "Gentlemen, this is the digital photography equipment I developed at home.
"The videos will be stored on high-capacity hard drives used by ordinary computers, rather than on film or tapes. We can not only play them instantly, but we can also import them into computers for post-production.
"Now, let's ask a colleague to stand in front of the camera. We'll shoot a short clip and then play it back so everyone can see the effect. Anyone want to be a model?"
The dream of performing in front of a camera is something everyone wants to try, not to mention a group of people working in a film company.
Although the number of people raising their hands was not a huge crowd, at least Henry didn't have to appoint an unwilling guy to perform.
One lucky guy stood in front of the camera. He looked around, unsure of what to do. He shyly asked, "What should I do?"
Henry, who was filming the scene, asked, "Did you go see the movie 'Forrest Gump'?"
"Yes, sir."
"Then let's do a line about 'Life is like chocolate'. Feel free to impress."
The person in front of the camera immediately pretended to be innocent, but in fact, in the eyes of others, he looked like a fool, and improvised a paragraph: "My mother always said that life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get."
Surprisingly, this guy even made a dirty joke without thinking of the consequences. Not only did the men present smile knowingly, but the women were also amused.
This was because the internet was not yet developed in that era and did not support video uploads. Otherwise, if this video of a fool making dirty jokes were uploaded to the internet, it would have been a surefire way to ruin your life.
Chapter 327 The Prospects of Digital Photography Technology
Henry recorded the clip for about a minute before stopping. It was just for show, not to attract traffic.
Furthermore, while the camera's hard drive had a custom-made, high-capacity hard drive, the one in the Stark i486 computer didn't. If the recorded footage was too long, the original file would be too large to be transferred to the i486 computer, let alone processed.
After the film was finished, Henry first projected the performance clip of the colleague who volunteered.
There is no film development step, nor any miscellaneous post-production process. Just enter a few lines of text on the computer menu, and the video clips stored in the camera will be projected on the screen.
The video content of course includes sound.
The colleague who volunteered earlier was more than just shocked when he saw the result of his performance. He was as if the sky had fallen. He grabbed Henry by the collar and kept saying, "Burn the negative, burn the negative."
The attitude is similar to Charlize Theron's first time on camera, when she was so nonchalant, not realizing the seriousness of the consequences.
But she's my girlfriend, so it's my duty to not let her dark history be exposed. What's this little fat guy who loves to show off? He's so flirty that he doesn't allow others to see it?
Henry pushed away the ugly face that was about to burst into tears, ignoring the sneers beside him. "My camera doesn't use film, so I can't just burn it. Now I want to show you the editing function. Be good and get out of the way."
"No! Boss! If you don't burn the film today, or find a way to get rid of that video, I'm going to jump off the roof!"
Henry, growing impatient, could only say, "Okay, okay. Let me demonstrate the editing effect first, and after everyone has seen it, I'll delete the video file. Otherwise, I'll have to reshoot it."
"You think I'm some serious director? If the result isn't good, I'll just reshoot it. I'll shoot hundreds or even thousands of takes for a simple scene. If you don't get out of the way now, your film will be immortalized in the Stark Films history museum."
As expected, when a person is in a hurry, it is useless to reason with him. Henry's threat made the fat man retreat three steps and make room.
Henry went to the computer and began to operate it, explaining, "I'm using a four-year-old Stark i486 series computer. I installed Linux and used editing software. I don't do anything too complicated, just cutting the film in half and swapping it back and forth."
Since he had previously used it himself, Henry hadn't considered creating a user-friendly interface. Besides, designing a separate UI would take up resources.
It's okay for a new computer, but this old computer from four years ago has a lot of messy resources and the editing software can't run.
Even so, this simple swap took more than ten minutes to complete, during which the previous video clip was played repeatedly.
The focus of everyone's discussion also shifted from the colleagues' unsightly performances to the picture quality, colors, details and other aspects.
Then someone brought in a film player and used a real film reel to play it, projecting it onto a second screen. With the real film for comparison, everyone had a more intuitive understanding of the color details.
After the editing was complete, everyone switched back to watching the film with the clips swapped. The image quality, color, and other aspects of the apparently incoherent film remained largely unchanged from the original, just like film editing.
"The image quality is still a little worse than that of a movie," said a photographer from the production department. He works with the cameras the most on a daily basis, so he was also called in to observe.
Henry replied, "Yes, it's a little worse than traditional 35mm film. But the image quality is already better than that of a television camera."
This time the photographer nodded. "Yeah, that's right."
We are all technical people, we speak our minds, seek truth from facts, and don't exaggerate or criticize anything.
Soon, people's interest shifted from the film to the homemade equipment Henry brought.
Although most people had excited expressions, a few looked worried.
Henry didn't listen to everyone's opinions first, but instead spoke his own thoughts. "I'll get the relevant technical documents later. Besides having the engineers in the equipment department review them, I'll also ask my legal colleagues to help me apply for the patent."
"Regarding the division of relevant patent rights, the legal department should have my personnel contract, so it will be handled according to the agreement between Mr. Stark and me. What I hope everyone can do is integrate this patchwork-like thing.
"Movie cameras aren't always mounted on tripods; sometimes they're carried on the shoulder, following the characters around. So, there shouldn't be any exposed cables, and lightweighting is a must.
"As for film quality, I already have a coding and decoding solution to improve the quality to 4K. The specific implementation will be completed within Stark Films, but I also need help to improve the overall system architecture.
"Also, the system's operation methods and interface need to be redesigned to make it easier to use and lower the barrier to entry. This is what I will be leading everyone in the near future. If you have any questions, please raise them now."
While some were praising their work, those who looked worried questioned, "Mr. Brown, the system you've developed is almost going to overturn the current film-based film production and broadcasting market.
"Have you ever considered how much it would cost? Is there anyone willing to cooperate? IMAX's less-than-successful experience shows that the status of the 35cm film system is not so easy to challenge."
"But it's not as difficult as we imagined!" Henry concluded decisively, adding, "We just need to develop a method to transfer computer formats to film so that it can be used in traditional projection systems.
"Using digital storage means directors don't have to worry about film prices and the inability to reuse them. As for post-production, we can not only sell software but also rent out post-production studios.
"That is to say, in the three parts of recording, conversion and screening, for any film, they can choose the appropriate equipment according to their needs for the first two parts. Many film crews rent equipment, so there is no equipment replacement cost.
"As for the projection part, we can provide traditional film copies. If there are cinemas willing to upgrade their projection equipment, think about it,—"
Henry patted his projector device.
"—Excluding the special motor and bulb required for film projectors, what price could we charge for the new projector, including the patent licensing fees, and what would be the profit?"
In order to allow each frame of the film to be clearly projected as it passes quickly under the drive of the motor, without reflecting the replacement status of the film as it is rolled, the projector light actually flashes at a certain frequency.
To ensure the perfect coordination between the two, the projector's motor and lamp naturally have their own unique features. This means that there are various patents and fees involved, so anyone who makes such equipment must pay for a license.
While digital film playback also uses the concept of "frames," it doesn't require flashing lights to illuminate the film. The savings in patent licensing fees are undoubtedly a niche advantage.
So Henry's explanation silenced the heads of the equipment departments.
Chapter 328 Seeking Help from the Boss
If it was just a general technological iteration or a minor technological update, and the new CEO demonstrated his ability, perhaps everyone at Stark Pictures would do what he wanted.
The ability to make money is worthy of respect no matter where you are.
But if the technology provided can impact the entire market, no less than a revolution in the film industry! Such technology really makes few people dare to follow blindly.
What if they bet on the wrong horse? Will the entire Stark Films be buried with it?
So what Henry took out was quickly reported to Tony Stark.
Fortunately, the boss had given out so many "special" rewards last night that he was still staying at his villa on Malibu Beach and hadn't flown back to the East Coast. This allowed him to show up at Stark Films in record time.
When he appeared, he was not only yawning, but Henry vaguely saw that he was still holding his waist while walking. But when he saw that annoying guy, Tony Stark stood up and walked normally as if nothing had happened.
The Stark family really has stubbornness engraved in their bones throughout their lives.
Henry was discussing with the engineers in the manufacturing department how to package the loose camera, what parts could be omitted or reduced in size, and where to reserve space.
When Tony Stark made his grand entrance with a team, he went straight to the film studio, where Henry displayed his homemade equipment.
Happy Hogan didn't let the executives who called to complain come forward immediately. Tony came to Henry and looked at the ugly stitched camera.
"What did you come up with that scared those old guys like it was the end of the world and forced me to come over."
"Are you so good that you'd just come over when someone calls you?" Henry wondered. "Weren't you so excited yesterday that you called a bunch of girls back to your villa to claim your reward?"
Unexpectedly, Tony didn't argue with this suspicion. Instead, he rubbed his nose in frustration. "I just happened to come over to take a look. Is there anything wrong with this?"
Could it be! Henry thought of a possibility.
Could it be that the young master, who hadn't had sex for a long time, miscalculated the ability of the goblins and turned his own nest into a spider web cave, and was almost killed by the goblins? That's why he used his job at Stark Films as an excuse to escape.
Henry looked at the young master's waist with a wicked smile. "Would you like me to recommend some oriental remedies for kidney nourishment and sperm strengthening?"
"Fuck! Am I here for that kind of thing? I'm here for work, work!"
Tony simply ignored Henry and turned to look at the anxious department heads who were stopped by Happy and the others. "Hey, you guys, come over here and tell me what's going on here?"
After receiving the invitation from their employer, this group of people were naturally let in by bodyguards such as Happy.
Fortunately, they didn't rush into a heated argument, causing the young master to lose his patience. Instead, they elected a clear-spoken representative to come forward.
"Mr. Stark and Mr. Brown have brought new technology to Stark Films, which is great. But we all feel that this new technology has such a huge impact that it almost challenges the existing film industry equipment landscape.
“Not to mention competitors like Arri and Panorama, even Japanese companies like Sony could become obstacles to the promotion of new technologies.
"And the entire film industry, led by Kodak, will hinder our development. It's like we're going to be enemies with the whole world, and that won't benefit the company in the slightest."
After listening to everyone's concerns, Tony certainly didn't make a hasty judgment. He turned and looked at Henry. "What's your side of the story?"
Henry shrugged and said nonchalantly, "From silent films to talkies, from black and white films to color films, there are always some old people who are afraid of the impact of change, saying that the film industry will collapse.
"But I don't blame them. After all, they were led by Mr. Howard Stark. Whether an improvement succeeds or fails, Mr. Stark will take the responsibility.
"And I'm just a nobody. I'm not surprised they don't dare to cooperate. Anyway, they just want to get a word from you, good or bad. If it goes wrong afterwards, it has nothing to do with them."
Tony didn't answer immediately. He just looked at the new device. "How does it perform? Can I use it now?"
Several engineers who were tinkering with the camera immediately jumped away when they heard Tony Stark's question, allowing the talented boss to get closer.
Henry didn't let them go, however. Instead, he invited them over to try out the system. He took charge of the instructions, explaining things to Tony while guiding the engineers. Although they were a little unfamiliar with the system, as fellow technicians, they didn't make any major mistakes.
When Tony saw the effect of the film produced by the digital camera and compared it to the effect of the film produced by 35mm film, he asked, "You said that the resolution and color saturation can be improved to replace the effect of traditional film."
"Technology will continue to evolve; the difference lies in who makes the difference. I think the word 'replacement' is a bit of an exaggeration; it simply provides users with an additional option. Perhaps some old-school directors simply insist on shooting with film."
Tony still hadn't made up his mind, and continued to watch the demonstrations. When he saw the Stark i486 struggling to run the editing software, his face turned as stinky as shit. "A computer from four years ago? Are you serious?"
"Don't you think a computer from four years ago can run this software? Just for this fact alone, you should admire me even more. And this is my personal property. You're not going to ask me to donate it, are you?"
"Donate it to a museum. That's where this computer belongs," Tony said with disdain.
Henry suddenly asked, "Is the computer department of Stark Industries still there?"
"Why do you ask?"
Henry said, "I want to say, I wonder if you have noticed along the way that everyone still mainly works with traditional paper and pen, and there is no trend towards digitalization at all.
"Don't you feel obligated to help solve this situation when you're about to be eliminated? After all, this place is named 'Stark', not one of those fake 'Starks' out there.
"Furthermore, computers are the most crucial component in developing this digital film system. Even if you don't sponsor a batch of the latest computers, you should at least sell them to us at cost price.
