Barbara couldn't bear to refuse the other party's intention, and the food in her hand looked only a small amount, which could be finished in one or two bites. So she could only finish the food in her mouth as quickly as possible and then launch the next wave of attack.
Barbara, inexplicably, burped from the food she had been fed. She then took the initiative to pour herself a bowl of soup to help her digest the greasiness in her mouth.
Although Henry tried his best to feed Barbara, he also ate a lot himself. Seeing that the little girl had surrendered, he quickly wiped out the remaining barbecue, leaving nothing behind.
In contrast, the slowest eater was actually Katie, who was nibbling on the deer leg next to her. She seemed to be enjoying her meal leisurely, licking the edge of her mouth from time to time, her domineering demeanor clearly visible.
But when Henry was drinking soup from the bowl, Barbara came closer again. There was no way to stop her unless she spilled the hot soup on her.
Henry hadn't intended to defend himself to this degree. So, after a night of hard work, Barbara finally rested her head on the man's shoulder, in a very ambiguous position.
"If you feel sleepy, you can go into the tent and sleep first. Katie and I will stay outside, and there will be no one to crowd you." After Henry finished speaking, he drank his soup calmly.
"Do you hate me?" Barbara asked softly in a coquettish voice.
"Well, strictly speaking, I don't hate it."
"So you like me?"
"No one would hate a cute girl like you," Henry said with a smile.
However, this answer seemed to incur Barbara's dissatisfaction. She raised her head and looked directly at the man holding the bowl of soup. She asked, "If that's the case, why don't you accept me?"
Henry looked into the soup pot with a strange expression and said, "I'm pretty sure the mushrooms I picked are edible and don't have any hallucinogenic effects. I didn't drink any alcohol today. So, do you have a cold or a fever?"
As Henry was about to touch Barbara's forehead, the angry girl slapped him away. "I'm not sick. I'm serious."
"Then what do you like about me?" Henry asked casually without even looking at the angry girl and put his attention back on his soup bowl.
"Do you believe in love at first sight?"
"I believe."
"Then do you know that I like you?"
"I don't believe this."
"Why?" Barbara almost jumped up, questioning the man.
Henry glanced at the girl next to him and said, "If you fall in love with someone at first sight, that person must be incredibly beautiful or handsome. Or else, they must be filled with the stench of money, blinding you."
"My appearance has been certified by a professional agent. I have no distinctive features, so I can only choose the supporting role route. I need to endure at least 20 years in Hollywood before I have a chance to be remembered. It's just a chance, not a guarantee.
"I'm definitely not some sugar daddy rich enough to support a female college student. I've only been a bit of a comedian for over half a year and an assistant to a washed-up star for over a year. So, what are you after? It makes me think about it."
Chapter 290 Revealing the Cards
The most important reason Henry couldn't say was because she was 'Barbara Morse'.
If she had approached him using a fake name, Henry would have been hooked. He was completely bewildered today.
A blonde beauty is throwing herself at him, isn't that what everyone dreams of? No matter if there's a conspiracy behind it, just go for it!
But SHIELD Agent No. 19, codenamed "Mockingbird," was too famous in the Marvel Universe. Or rather, these famous people weren't easy to deal with, even if she hadn't achieved greatness yet.
Henry didn't have the guts to bet on whether she just happened to have the same name as him, so it would be easiest to just treat her as that person.
Besides, why would a girl with such good conditions plot against me like that?
According to Western thinking, it is possible to leave a souvenir and collect stamps on the West Coast.
But stamp collecting has to be a mutual thing. After being politely rejected several times at the beginning of the year, he came back a semester later. This means he either has ulterior motives or is here for revenge.
In this situation, how desperate must one be to touch a woman like this?
When faced with a sugar-coated bullet, not everyone has the ability to swallow the sugar coating and throw the bullet back. If it explodes in your mouth while you're eating it, who is responsible?
So it’s not that Henry is unmoved, but the risks behind it outweigh the benefits.
Seeing Barbara pretending to be shocked, but not understanding anything, Henry continued, "On the surface, I'm not the least bit attractive. I have some self-awareness of that."
"Then the only possibility that I could attract a beauty like you is my undisclosed identity and abilities. So the question is, which unit's agent are you from, or which country's spy are you from?"
Even Barbara, who was still a bit unsure about people's hearts, knew she would resist. She shook her head wildly and said, "No, no, no, I'm not an agent or a spy. I just like your humor and your erudition..."
The girl's words were actually quite guilty. Henry laughed and said, "Girl, if you graduated from a third-rate high school, I might believe it today.
"But a top school like Georgia Tech is filled with only nerds or athletic recruits? There's not even one funny or wealthy person.
"Don't even mention your erudition; it's simply destroying Georgia Tech's reputation. You might as well just say we met as kids and I helped you chase away some little girls. I still remember that."
Barbara seemed to have gotten a hint and said excitedly, "Yes, yes, yes, actually I never dared to tell you. When I was a child, I grew up in Los Angeles, and we..."
"The story about you being a relative of Gary's ex-wife is also fake," Henry said suddenly.
If Barbara still doesn't realize that she has been exposed, then she has wasted her brain.
She quickly calmed down, regaining her composure, and asked calmly, "Can I still walk out of the forest alive today?"
"It's not that serious, is it? And Gary knows I brought you out. If you don't go back, I'll be the prime suspect. I don't need to cause myself trouble."
"Oh, so my safety is guaranteed."
"After all, I don't have anything to lose. I just want you to stop focusing on me. It's pointless."
Barbara said knowingly, "Due to confidentiality, I can't reveal too much. But I can say that we represent the official position and are committed to maintaining world justice and peace. Are you so opposed to us?"
Henry chuckled twice and said, "Justice has its own stance, but peace requires the joint efforts of everyone. Don't you think these are two contradictory concepts?
"Unless the peace you want is a slave-like peace where everyone submits to your justice. In that case, your organization might as well learn from the villains in those TV dramas and openly declare that they want to conquer the world."
Barbara, who was still studying and whose ideas had not yet been solidified, became less confident after being teased by Henry.
She frantically scratched her head, trying to find a loophole in her words to fight back.
The problem is that with this kind of inductive talk, you can't follow the other person's line of thought. Otherwise, it's like being entangled in a fishing net; the more you struggle, the tighter it gets.
It's like facing a keyboard warrior with a lot of hot air. There are only two ways to defeat them: one is a real-life PK; the other is to be unreasonable and just yell at them. Using Stephen Chow's approach, no matter how many sophistry they throw at you, I'll just respond with "motherfucker."
Barbara hadn't experienced much of the world, and it could be said that the world hadn't yet produced a large number of nitpickers like keyboard warriors. Online communication existed only in the hands of a small number of people. In the end, Barbara could only muster one question: "Aren't you a patriot?"
The word "Patriot" has a very different meaning for Americans who founded their independent country.
Because they are a group of traitors who justified their actions by abandoning their original country and huddling together in a new land. So they call themselves patriots to cover up their origins.
Without this fig leaf, it's impossible to conceal the fact that they were both losers who fled to the New World and traitors who betrayed their homeland. The only thing they had better than the Australians was that they weren't exiled criminals.
Regardless of whether he could return to his former homeland, Henry found it difficult to like the United States. He sighed and said helplessly, "I just happened to be here."
When he woke up, he was in Alaska, making his first fortune on a crabbing boat and getting legal U.S. citizenship thanks to Old Tom. At that stage, Henry didn't think much about it and was just being pushed by the circumstances.
If he had woken up in Norway, England, Australia, New Zealand, or any other country, as long as he had a reason to stay and wouldn't be deported as an illegal immigrant, he would have stayed. He would see what would happen next.
Although Henry's answer was not satisfactory, it was impossible to classify him as an enemy.
Starting from the counterculture movement in the 60s, the rise of hippies, anarchism, anti-war, and sexual openness, this group of people can almost be classified as the opposite of "patriots".
But can we say they are not Americans?
Today, the only people who hold high the banner of patriotism are rednecks and those in the American core class. Especially the latter, it can be said that if they fail the loyalty test, even the channels for advancement will be blocked.
This is the kind of place Barbara stayed in. Bringing Henry in was both Nick Fury's request and her hope.
Now Henry knocked down the steps with his own hands, what else could she do?
Chapter 291 A Failure That Isn’t a Failure
Nick Fury's original plan was just to have Barbara Morse win over Henry Brown.
Under the condition of letting down one's guard, he could test the opponent's intentions. Then the big boss Fury would step in and subdue the opponent.
Later, Barbara changed her mind. She was attracted by Henry's attentiveness and thoughtfulness during the trip, not to mention his humorous and witty conversation.
This made her, still a college student, think about having a boyfriend and working in the same unit with him, regardless of whether S.H.I.E.L.D. had a rule against office romances.
But they never thought about what would happen if Henry did not follow their plan?
It was then that Barbara realized a problem. She had long known that this man was very wary, and even sincerity might not impress him, let alone approaching him while lying.
So Barbara asked Fury to let her take over Henry's job.
Because you like someone, you bring them into a company you think has great potential. This is an acceptable development for both men and women, and Henry should not be opposed to it.
If the other party realizes that everything is a lie, rejection is the only outcome. But if the lie has already been seen through, will the outcome be any different?
Barbara was filled with deep regret and said with a bitter face, "If I tell you that I really like you, would you believe me?"
"What do you like about me?" Henry asked.
"Your humor and erudition..." Barbara said guiltily.
Henry said, "Hahaha. Bobby, you are a good girl. You have the opportunity to find a man better than me. You don't have to set your sights on someone like me.
"As for the organization behind you, no matter who they are, I believe there are many heroes willing to save the world. No one is irreplaceable. I am too insignificant."
"If everyone thinks this way, and is unwilling to step forward when something happens, thinking that someone else will do it, then in the end, no one will do it. Is that right?" Barbara said excitedly.
Henry poked the fire with a stick and said, "So you should look for the kind of good person who is willing to save the world, not someone like me who just wants to live a good life. If you like me, thank you.
"But I still have to say that we're not a good match. If the organization behind you wants me, I can only say I'm sorry. Our philosophies don't align, and I can't be the kind of good person you want me to be."
Throwing the stick into the fire, Henry faced Barbara for the first time since he started talking. He said, "But you don't have to worry. Although I can't be a good person, I don't have the courage to be a bad person either. Trouble."
"Just tell your boss what you're saying. Then you can go into the tent and have a good sleep. Katie and I will stay outside, and no one will hurt you.
"Well... no cat or tiger would do that. Wait until tomorrow, and I'll send you back to the city safely. You live your colorful life, and I'll live my dull and boring life."
Barbara didn't give up. She grabbed Henry's arm, leaned her tearful face towards him, and said, "Even so, can't we leave a memory?"
After saying this, she actually closed her eyes. Her shiny, tender lips curled up slightly, as if ready to be picked.
Henry stretched out his finger and flicked her head. He didn't use much force, but the pain was enough to make Barbara hold her forehead in grievance, staring up at the unromantic man with a pair of resentful little fish eyes.
"Be good and go to sleep. Otherwise, the one you see with wild animal instincts might not be me." Henry threatened jokingly.
Not far away, Katie, who was bored from chewing on a deer leg, roared in response and then licked her face with her tongue.
Barbara remained sullen and refused to speak to Henry until the next day, back in downtown Los Angeles. She ate and drank as usual, though, nodding and shaking her head in response.
Following the girl's head navigation, Henry placed Barbara in City Hall Park in the city center.
Earlier this year, Barbara had also stayed at a hotel nearby. This time, however, she didn't seem to have made a reservation. She didn't want to follow Henry back to Gary's apartment building, so she got off here.
Although Katie was tied in the back seat, a tiger was still too eye-catching in the city center, and the police came up to show their concern several times.
This is the result of Henry having all the backseat windows rolled down. If they had been open, a lot of passersby would have had heart attacks.
So after dropping Barbara off, Henry drove away without looking back.
Barbara entered the park and found a bench to sit on. She had changed back into her dress and was wearing a large straw hat, which mostly obscured her expression.
She dialed a number on the cell phone, which rang three times and then was immediately disconnected.
After a while, a black man sat down at the other end of the bench. Nick Fury, his shirt sleeves rolled up, his tie loosened, and he ate a hot dog. In a voice no one else could hear, he mumbled, "When did you get to Los Angeles?"
"Yesterday morning."
"Well, let's report."
"Mission failed. Mission to recruit Henry Brown."
Fury frowned, swallowed the hot dog in his mouth, and asked, "What's going on?"
"I'm exposed." Barbara recounted everything that had happened over the past two days, including the temptation to fail.
Finally, Barbara said dejectedly, "I'm sorry, I screwed up. I shouldn't have taken it upon myself to come see him."
Nick Fury finished the rest of his hot dog and clapped his hands. He said cryptically, "Don't worry, things aren't as bleak as you think. While it's not the ideal outcome, it's not a failure."
Barbara's disbelief shone from beneath her large straw hat, a look of complete bewilderment.
Fury explained: "This is the result of a psychological profile of Henry Brown conducted by the Bureau's psychologists. This person is very rational, but his behavior is not to reject others blindly.
"He will choose the least troublesome approach from all the options. For example, this time he rejected you because he realized that too much contact with you would bring him trouble.
"But judging by his work as Audrey Hepburn's assistant, he understood the value of compromise, provided it came in return. He also wouldn't back down easily when it mattered.
"Perhaps, as you report, he is not a patriot. But as long as he can be a qualified tool, the rest is a question of how we use him. Do you understand me?"
Barbara gave me an I-don't-understand-but-I'm-shocked look and was speechless.
Nick Fury said, "Bobby, I'm very optimistic about you. If you want to be more than just an ordinary agent, you have to learn these. This is a good experience, think about it more."
What Fury didn't say was that Henry Brown had a new girl around him recently, who was also blonde and blue-eyed.
