The Comprehensive Evolution of American Comics
#923 - Return to the Watchtower
“Buzz!”
After a dazzling flash of white light, Yang Le and the others traversed over 20,000 kilometers, arriving from the ground at the satellite base located in Earth's geosynchronous orbit—the Watchtower.
As one of the Justice League's many bases, the Watchtower, while not the first, is definitely the most well-known.
This is because it has been in use since its initial construction, frequently appearing in the readers' view, coupled with humanity's longing for space, so the Watchtower rightfully always ranks among the iconic structures of American comics.
However, combining it with several modern popular memes, the Watchtower has quite a few flaws, such as its exterior being extremely similar to a spinning top, which happens to resemble the base of another organization that also protects the Earth, and coincidentally, they also built their base in Earth's orbit.
It is precisely because of that team's performance that Yang Le feels somewhat apprehensive about this classic spinning top-shaped space station. Of course, this is just a joke, as the reliability of the Justice League and the safety of the Watchtower are unmatched by that team.
Theoretically, the existence of the Watchtower is one of the Justice League's top secrets. Non-members of the Justice League could not possibly know of its existence.
Robin and the others are different; they are all assistants to the core members of the Justice League. Even if Batman and the others intentionally concealed it, living together for years would inevitably reveal it, so it's better to inform them proactively.
However, knowing is knowing. Batman and the others still strictly adhere to the League's regulations, so Robin and the others have never boarded the Watchtower. Today is the first time.
“Welcome to the Watchtower!”
Yang Le took two steps forward, turning around and opening his arms to welcome Robin and the others. This standard welcoming gesture puzzled the children.
“I heard it's a Justice League tradition.”
Not receiving a response from the children, Yang Le wasn't embarrassed. He calmly lowered his arms and explained to them.
“Every newcomer to the Watchtower will have an old-timer say the above line to welcome the new arrival.”
“But unfortunately, you can't be considered members of the Justice League yet.”
A familiar voice interrupted Yang Le's group's conversation. Wally looked towards the direction of the voice with excitement, and sure enough, he saw the Flash standing in front of an instrument, waving to them.
“Long time no see.” The Flash flashed next to Yang Le. “Honestly, I didn't expect you guys to board the Watchtower at this age.”
“Clearly, we're not only underage but also not compliant.”
After seeing the Flash, Wally completely relaxed and could even start joking.
“I thought you'd be as scared as a quail.” The Flash nodded with satisfaction. “Honestly, just listening to Yang Le's report, I even wanted to go to the ground to pick you up myself.”
Upon hearing this, Wally immediately puffed out his chest, about to say something boastful, but Yang Le was one step faster in undermining him.
“He was indeed as scared as a drowned quail. If you took off his mask, you might even see red-rimmed eyes.”
“I didn't cry!” Wally reacted like a cat whose tail had been stepped on, firmly denying his cowardly behavior.
The Flash knew better than anyone what kind of person his sidekick was, so he didn't respond and prepared to skip over this topic that could ignite the other party.
“I was wondering why you guys were still dawdling in the lobby.”
Everyone turned their heads and saw Wonder Woman in full armor, her hands on her hips, looking helpless.
“Stop teasing the children, they've just been through a big battle and are already very tired.”
Yang Le naturally agreed with his other half's request, and then, regardless of the gazes of the people behind him, he walked to Wonder Woman in two or three steps.
“I just wanted to let them relax. You should be able to see that the children are all tense.”
Having received warrior education since she was young, Diana could naturally see it, but she could also see that Yang Le just had the intention of teasing the youngsters and had nothing to do with helping them relax.
“They're just too tense, a little rest will do them a lot of good.” Diana rolled her eyes. “As for you two, Batman asked me to inform you to go to the conference room to assemble.”
“Excuse me…” Robin weakly raised his hand to the side, and only after the two of them looked over did he continue.
“Can we sit in on the meeting? After all, Red Tornado is our guardian, and we also want to contribute to his disappearance.”
“I'm afraid not.” Diana shook her head. “Unlike Mr. Kent, Red Tornado is an active member of the Justice League, so his disappearance should also be the responsibility of the Justice League. Batman also told me before not to agree to your request to sit in.”
“Almost everyone is here.” Batman noticed the two people walking in from the entrance. “Let's start the meeting when the Flash arrives.”
“I'm already here!”
As soon as Batman finished speaking, the Flash had already sat in his seat, even faster than Yang Le and the other two who had entered the conference room one step ahead.
“We can start now.”
“Alright.” Batman saw that everyone was seated, then stood up from his seat and explained the events from beginning to end.
Because many people here, like Yang Le, had just crawled out of bed, they didn't know what had happened specifically. They were also shocked to hear that Red Tornado was missing.
Batman didn't hide anything and told everyone the whole story in detail, including the two missions performed by the Young Justice League, which seemed unrelated to Red Tornado's disappearance.
After all, no one could guarantee that these two missions were not a strategy by the mastermind to lure away the Young Justice League, who also lived in Mount Justice, with the purpose of kidnapping Red Tornado.
