These eight sufferings are major obstacles to achieving nirvana and transcendence, and are also obstacles to becoming a Buddha.
If the Buddha in the temple is still obsessed with honor and disgrace, it proves that he cannot let go of his worries and attachments. If he cannot let go, then he is the same as us. How can he become a Buddha then?
But since he has become a Buddha and is enshrined in the temple, it proves that he has let go.
If you call him Buddha, he won't be happy. If you call him Celestial Lord, he won't care. He won't feel insulted, nor will he be upset.
When Zen Master Lingyun heard this, he was obviously stunned. So were the monks who looked ashen and ready to die.
The fact that they have the determination and courage to die proves that they are devoted to Buddhism.
He went to death calmly simply because he did not want to see the future move of converting Buddhism to Taoism, and he did not want to see the Buddha he had worshipped all his life being humiliated.
But now someone tells them that it is just their wishful thinking and that the Buddha actually doesn't care at all.
"If even the Buddha and Bodhisattvas don't care, why should they care so much? Isn't this a bit self-indulgent?"
This is what many monks who are preparing to die are thinking at this moment.
The expressions of the monks in the venue changed drastically at once, some were happy, some were confused.
Those who didn't want to die were happy. Jiang Weichen persuaded those who were willing to die calmly. Without comparison, it would not seem that they were afraid of death.
Those monks who were originally preparing to die were confused. They did not doubt the authenticity of the Buddha in the temple and were convinced in their hearts that he had become a Buddha.
When one becomes a Buddha, one naturally lets go of obsessions with honor and disgrace, and no longer cares about titles.
But they vaguely felt that something was wrong, but they couldn't refute it for a while.
"Great, it's really great." Lin Lingsu on the other side kept praising.
He was not unhappy because Jiang Weichen stopped those monks from committing suicide.
He actually doesn't dislike real monks, but he dislikes those monks who are hypocritical and say one thing and do another.
He wanted to take revenge on the entire Buddhist community simply because there were too many people like him in the community.
While praising, Lin Lingsu was also a little excited, as the path to converting Buddhism to Taoism was now open.
Originally, he wanted to change the names of the Buddhist gods and temples, but there was no other way except to force them.
But now, I didn’t expect that Jiang Weichen could solve the problem with just a few words.
Just a few words could make these monks doubt themselves, and Lin Lingsu felt a little ashamed of himself.
Although he won the debate before, he only won because the actual practices of Buddhism did not match what was described in the scriptures, not because he won in terms of Buddhist teachings.
However, what Jiang Weichen said were all Buddhist teachings, which made those monks doubt themselves.
After that, it would be much easier for him to change his name based on this statement.
Chapter 491 High-risk Occupation: Shaolin Abbot
Inside the arena, Lingyun's expression changed for a long time, and suddenly he understood and said, "Amitabha, Master Jiang's eloquence is unparalleled, and he almost made me fall into a maze."
After Lingyun finished speaking, he continued, "I know that the donor wants to stop me from dying, but there is no need. Although Buddha doesn't care, I am not Buddha. When you cultivate Buddhahood, you are not cultivating Buddha, but yourself. Buddha doesn't care, but as long as I care, it is enough."
Lingyun's words instantly relieved the confused monks. Yes, when worshipping Buddha all one's life, what is important is not the Buddha's attitude, but one's own attitude.
The monks clasped their hands together and bowed to Lingyun. Then they said almost in unison, "Thank you, Zen Master Lingyun, for your enlightenment."
After saying this, the monks sat cross-legged on the ground and recited the last paragraph of the scripture together.
Jiang Weichen sighed slightly. This kind of person, with profound Buddhist knowledge and a light attitude towards life and death, had a firm belief and was very difficult to fool. Finally, he sighed, "It's a pity that the true monks face death with equanimity, while those who remain behind are mostly hypocritical and those who have no devotion to Buddhism. Perhaps it's a good thing that such Buddhist sects don't exist."
After Jiang Weichen finished speaking, many monks were dissatisfied, but the person who spoke was Jiang Weichen, so they were dissatisfied but did not dare to say anything. This was a killing god who was countless times more ruthless than Duan Siping.
Lingyun was stunned after hearing this and looked around. Dozens of monks were determined to die, but more monks did not dare to look him in the eye.
There are hundreds of monks present today, all of whom are famous monks from all over the country, but less than 10% of them are willing to defend the dignity of the Buddha with their death.
Lingyun felt sad. Although there were many Buddhist monks, most of them were not devoted to Buddhism. Some sought survival, some sought martial arts, some sought power and prestige, but very few truly sought Buddhism.
Lingyun sighed slightly and said to the dozens of monks, "The defeat of Buddhism this time is truly my fault. I must apologize."
"Master Lingyun, there's no need to do this. This isn't just your fault. We're all guilty, and we won't shirk responsibility."
"Amitabha, Master Lingyun, we all saw it. You have done your best. Don't worry about it."
"..."
After Lingyun and the others finished speaking, he said loudly: "This time, I am the representative of the competition. Sacrificing my life for the Buddha is enough for me alone."
Everyone was about to persuade him, but Lingyun interrupted, saying, "My fellow disciples, I know my life is drawing to a close and I am no longer able to contribute anything to Buddhism. Death is not to be feared, but having the courage to live and face everything is the most difficult thing."
I also ask all my fellow disciples not to take life and death lightly, but to live well. The inheritance of the Dharma needs you."
After Lingyun finished speaking, he bowed, then turned around and bowed deeply to Jiang Weichen. After a long time, he stood up and sat down cross-legged. Not long after, he passed away.
Jiang Weichen witnessed the whole process but did not try to persuade him. For Zen Master Lingyun, who was nearing the end of his life and was indifferent to life and death, there was no joy in living and no pain in dying.
As he said, living and facing all this is the greatest torture, while death is a relief.
Zen Master Lingyun passed away, and several elderly monks passed away with him.
Some other monks finally stopped their attempts to die and just chanted sutras for Zen Master Lingyun and others to pray for their souls to be liberated.
At this moment, neither the martial artists nor the Taoists spoke or commented.
Those who can face death calmly and sacrifice their lives for Buddhism deserve respect from everyone.
Even some people in the Taoist community who are unaware of the cruelty of the previous struggles between Taoism and Buddhism feel that they have gone too far.
Jiang Weichen felt vaguely touched in his heart, as if he had realized something, but in the end his realization was insufficient and could only turn into a foundation of accumulation.
Interestingly, after Lingyun passed away, the Shaolin abbot Xuanji passed the position of abbot to Xuandu, and asked Xuancheng and Xuzhu to assist him. He then passed away with several Shaolin monks.
When Xuan Ci's scandal was exposed and he saw his fellow martial artists die tragically, he took the initiative to die with seventeen stick monks, in order to restore his reputation and give an explanation to his fellow martial artists.
The same is true for Xuan Ji today. Regardless of whether his actions are sincere or false, they have achieved the effect he wants.
The abbot of Shaolin Temple sacrificed his life for Buddhism, so fellow Buddhists cannot blame Shaolin for the sins.
Being the abbot of Shaolin Temple is a high-risk job, but it must be said that anyone who can become an abbot has an impeccable awareness and truly values the reputation of Shaolin Temple more than his own life.
In order to protect Shaolin, each of them would die without hesitation, without any hesitation.
Among the eight eminent monks of the Xuan generation, almost all of them were masters, but now only Xuan Cheng and Xuan Du are left. The other six are all dead, and none of them died of natural causes.
Jiang Weichen glanced at the scene. He no longer had the mood to watch and witness the situation, and was about to return to the valley.
But at this moment, Master Ku Rong, whose injuries had stabilized a little, suddenly stood up and asked, "Master Jiang, do you still remember your promise?"
He knew what his ancestors meant and was unwilling to waste this favor, but after seeing Zen Master Lingyun's determination, he finally spoke up.
Duan Siping didn't say much. He had something to ask of Jiang Weichen, but he was also a Buddhist and would not blame Ku Rong.
He could ignore the matter of converting Buddhism to Taoism, but others could not. They had to obey and change their clothes and titles, otherwise they would not be able to survive in the Song Dynasty.
Jiang Weichen paused, turned around, and said, "Of course I remember. When the master taught me the [Withered and Flourishing Zen Sutra], I promised that if Tianlong Temple ever encountered difficulties in the future, I would help to the best of my ability."
Kurong bowed and said, "Master Jiang, I hope you can plead for the Buddhist sect and give it a glimmer of hope."
Jiang Weichen was about to refuse, as he had promised the Tianlong Temple, and Buddhist affairs had nothing to do with him.
But looking at Ku Rong who was bending down to worship, his gaze turned to Ling Yun who had already passed away.
He also bowed deeply to himself, but he knew that he was not close to him, so he said nothing.
Jiang Weichen sighed inwardly, discussed a few words with Zhao Kuangyin through voice transmission, and after informing Zhang Ziyang, he said, "I have obtained the consent of His Majesty to convert Buddhism to Taoism this time, with the exception of Tianlong Temple."
Kurong was happy, and everyone in Tianlong Temple was happy, but the other Buddhist monks looked at everyone in Tianlong Temple with unfriendly eyes.
Jiang Weichen ignored those people, and they only dared to be jealous.
Jiang Weichen continued, "In addition, Tianlong Temple can appropriately accept some high-ranking monks with good moral character and no bad records to practice in the temple.
What constitutes a good moral character? I believe you will know the answer in your own hearts. I hope that your Tianlong Temple will remain the same, and after many years, you will still be able to stick to your original intentions, not be burdened by reputation, and not engage in dirty and filthy things. "
Saving Tianlong Temple was to repay Kurong's kindness in passing on his skills, and allowing it to accept some eminent monks was to express gratitude to Lingyun for his dedicated guidance.
As a Buddhist, he only had a favor to do with these two people, so he repaid it this time.
Kurong, the people from Tianlong Temple and a few monks expressed their gratitude. Jiang Weichen nodded and returned to the valley.
Next, Zhao Kuangyin thought for a while and quickly issued an edict.
Everything about the conversion from Buddhism to Taoism was carried out according to the plan provided by Lin Lingsu, including changing the name, clothing, etiquette and regulations, etc.
This was the rule that had been set before when Xiaoyaozi was still alive.
In addition, a series of corrective measures were announced based on actual intelligence and what was said in this debate.
These included a series of clauses requiring Buddhists to return all occupied land to the tenants, not to annex land from now on, not to accept evildoers who violated the laws of the Song Dynasty, not to shelter disciples who did evil, and so on.
After the announcement, people from Buddhism and Taoism dispersed, and the news of this debate spread throughout the world.
Some of the words in the literary fight were fanned by various parties and became well-known.
The transformation of Buddhism into Taoism had not yet been carried out, but most of the Buddhist believers had been lost all of a sudden.
The rise of Buddhism was suppressed in an instant, and it would soon suffer a devastating blow.
At the same time, news spread that Jiang Weichen had come back to life and displayed his divine power.
Chapter 492 Everyone Arrives
In Changchun Valley, Jiang Weichen was reading various Taoist classics while creating and perfecting his martial arts.
After digesting Murong Longcheng's martial arts insights, his foundation was greatly enhanced. Half a month later, he perfected his own defensive skills: Thick Earth Golden Bell Technique!
This technique combines the [Golden Bell Cover] and Murong Longcheng's [Golden Body Reflection], and adds the thickness of the earth element and the solidity of the gold element to achieve unparalleled defense.
As for the means of attack, they have only been strengthened, and no new martial arts have been created.
A few days later, a group of people arrived in Changchun Valley, including Chunhua, Wang Zhaohui, Qiu Ruhua, and later Wang Qian, who had gone to Japan, also came.
When everyone saw Jiang Weichen, they were extremely happy. Although there was an extra person above them, that person was Jiang Weichen, so no one was unhappy at all.
With a leader, they have a backer and no longer have to act cautiously. With a leader, they have someone to guide them on the path of martial arts.
After Jiang Weichen chatted with everyone for a while, he said, "Wen Shaofei is still the deputy leader, and you all have your own responsibilities."
After saying this, he took out a stack of scrolls and handed them to everyone, saying, "This is my Immortal-Slaying Sword scroll. I want you to distribute it to every branch. Anyone who joins the alliance must pay homage to it."
