Chapter 1. The cutest girl in the world

After passing through the tunnel, the telephone poles along the way were left behind.

The rumbling train slowly stopped in front of the signal station, and the dark clouds blocked the sun.

Outside the window, the passengers who were holding newspapers and waiting for the train to arrive have already picked up their luggage and stood up. Several uniformed train attendants have got off the train to guide them.

The sky was white and the cold November wind could not penetrate into the carriage.

In the third carriage, at a seat near the window, Makimura Taku looked out the window and sighed.

In the seventeenth year after his rebirth on the island country, Taku Makimura, who had just graduated from Kamikawa Private School, decided to go hiking at the beginning of the second week of November.

Different from other people's rebirth.

There is no cheat code like the awakening system, nor is there an easy-to-use experience panel.

The only difference between him and others is that Makimura Taku has a special ability that is hard to use:

As long as you repeat what the other person said in your mind, you will know whether it is a lie or not.

In the military and political fields, it might be considered insignificant.

But the prerequisite is that others believe that his ability really exists, otherwise it will just be regarded as a joke or too much of a middle school student.

When he was six years old, his father died in an accident at a construction site. His mother also fell ill and passed away soon after. Makimura Taku had no other relatives to rely on.

I barely completed compulsory education with the help of social support and have no intention of continuing my studies at university.

This time when he went out, Taku Makimura only had enough cash to sustain his life for half a year, and his only luggage was another set of clothes for changing.

He decided to go to Echigo Yuzawa to relax.

When spring came, it was also before he officially started looking for a job.

Closing the German magazine, Taku Makimura leaned back on the soft backrest and rubbed his eyelids with his hands to relax.

There were sounds of conversation coming from all around, as if the carriage was stuffed into a glass bottle, and the sounds came and went.

The suitcase's wheels made a distinct squeaking sound as they moved across the floor.

The train stopped for a long time and most of the passengers got on board.

The flight attendant outside was about to put away the step for disabled people to enter when a hurried female voice suddenly came through the glass window:

"Wait, wait! I'm not in the car yet!"

Startled by the sound, Makimura Taku raised half an eye and glanced over without much interest.

It was just a moment, in the visible air, like a scene that flashed by in a movie.

The long-lost sunshine penetrated the clouds, and gentle golden light flashed in the girl's eyes.

The desolate autumn days are gone, and as I gaze up, I see the vast sky with white doves flying low.

No matter if it’s one year, three years, twenty years, or a lifetime.

Makimura Taku will always remember vividly the picture that penetrated his soul.

The wind blowing into the platform lifted the girl's long dark blue hair.

She held down the brim of her hat with one hand and pulled a white suitcase with the other; her floral dress and cashmere scarf fluttered in the wind.

"Please wait here earlier next time." The short-haired female flight attendant said to her as if blaming a child, and took her suitcase.

"Yeah, thank you!" The girl smiled sweetly, and that smile made people happy.

After a while, the train started slowly and the girl got into the carriage, being in the same carriage as Taku Makimura.

She checked the serial numbers on the seats one by one, as if checking the extent of damage to the seats, and finally stopped next to Makimura Taku.

Her narrowed eyes finally relaxed, with a look of surprise on her face: "Found it."

Hearing the voice, Makimura Taku looked over with his arms supported.

Those were a pair of eyes that seemed to hide stars.

Just looking at each other makes people feel as if they are in the deep sky in the mountains, thinking of the bright moonlight and the shining stage.

Even without the embellishment of sunlight, those eyes were so beautiful that they made people lose their minds, as if they wanted to take away all of Makimura Taku's aura.

The girl did not sit down immediately. Instead, she glanced at the luggage rack above her head and deliberately dragged the wheels of the suitcase.

"Do you need help?" he asked after a moment of hesitation.

"Thank you!" The girl smiled beautifully, handed the suitcase to him directly, then adjusted her skirt and sat down opposite him.

"..."

The luggage was placed on the shelf, and Makimura Taku clapped his hands and sat back down.

"Thank you," the girl said with a smile on her face, "What's your name?"

"Makimura Taku."

"Hoshino Ai."

She took off her hat and lifted her long hair that was draped over her neck and the cashmere scarf.

A faint fragrance diffused into the air, like freshly picked cherries.

Makimura Taku looked at her in a daze.

"What are you looking at?" After being stared at for a while, Hoshino Aicai said in a tactful tone.

"I'm sorry." Makimura Taku apologized for his ungentlemanly behavior, "Ms. Hoshino is so pretty, I accidentally..."

"You are the one." She was not angry at all. Instead, she leaned forward and stared into Makimura Taku's eyes with interest. "You are so handsome, are you an actor?"

"That's ridiculous."

"How big?"

"Seventeen." He added, "Just turned seventeen last month."

"Are you a high school student?"

"I have graduated from high school."

"Oh, I'm a year older than you." She put her hand on her well-developed chest as if she was saying something very remarkable. "I'm eighteen, so I'm your sister."

"Lie." This is such a simple lie that Makimura Taku could easily see through.

"How could it be a lie?" she said. "There's no need to lie about something like this."

Makimura Taku didn't care what she explained and asked directly: "Seventeen?"

"eighteen!"

"But he looks like sixteen..." He held up his chin.

"I'm really eighteen."

The train drove into a residential area. Green houses flashed by. There were towers every few meters, and cables were in messy straight lines.

"Ms. Hoshino," Makimura Taku placed the closed German magazine on the table and stared into Hoshino Ai's eyes, "You can't fool me. I can see through all lies."

"See through the lie?" Hoshino Ai's eyes widened even more.

"What was the specific reason?" Makimura Taku thought for a moment. "I think you didn't graduate from high school, and it's November 8th... Did you skip school?"

"certainly not!"

"Strange, no lies this time."

"Your ability is really useful." She puffed up her cheeks and looked outside in anger, while Makimura Takuya looked into the distance.

The scenery changes to the bridge.

The fragile thin clouds seemed frozen in the sky, and the outside was completely white; even the surface of the lake was glowing with a cold light.

Someone got up and opened the car window, and the November north wind rushed in through the small gap.

It wasn't cold at all, but rather the air in the car became fresher.

Pulling her eyes back from the window, about ten seconds later, Hoshino Ai adjusted her scarf and said nonchalantly, "I'm actually sixteen."

"I guessed it." Makimura Taku was still looking out the window, thinking about the reason why the place where the sea and the sky meet was white.

"But I didn't skip school." said Hoshino Ai.

"Yeah." Makimura Taku knew it was not a lie.

He rested his hand on the window, stroking his beardless chin, and waited for the other party to continue.

"If I say I'm an orphan," she looked up, "will you believe it?"

After hearing this, Makimura Taku turned his head and looked at her with a little surprise.

He repeated these words in his mind: "I believe."
