Wang Baixi managed to block the first two blows with his protective gear, but the third sweeping kick grazed the edge of the gear and struck his shoulder. He staggered back a few steps and fell heavily onto the fighting mat. Then he closed his eyes and stopped moving.
"king?"
Cassandra retracted from her fighting stance.
one second.
Two seconds, three seconds.
Wang Baixi still didn't move.
"king!"
Her expression changed drastically at that moment. Her eyes instantly reddened, and she rushed forward, kneeling on the mat and forcefully patting Wang Baixi's shoulder.
"Haha! Just kidding!" Wang Baixi suddenly opened one eye and burst into loud laughter.
Before the redness in Cassandra's eyes had faded, her cheeks flushed crimson. She stared intently at Wang Baixi, her lips pressed into a straight line.
She stood up from the fighting mat, untied her boxing bandages, and without wiping the sweat and tears from her face, walked towards the rest area at the other end of the bat cave.
Wang Baixi's laughter gradually subsided. He sat up from the cushion, looked at Cassandra's back, and suddenly realized that he had done something very stupid.
"I think I messed up," he thought.
“You definitely messed up.” Tim continued operating the Batcomputer without looking up. “But that’s not important.”
How did you know what I was thinking...?
"Okay, I've got in touch with Bruce."
Wang Baixi immediately scrambled to his feet and strode over to Tim. "Did he find Jason's body? I'm actually quite curious, shouldn't he have taken Jason's body back to Gotham in the first place?"
“Yes, he chose to leave Jason there. If he hadn’t done that, the world might be different,” Tim remarked. “Anyway, he hasn’t found him yet, and it will take him a while to find him.”
"What else did he say?"
"He also said that because there has been fighting in the Middle East recently, the signal is very unstable, so he asked us to contact him again during the daytime in the United States."
Did you tell him about Lincoln and the Riddler?
“He knows the title of the book. He will keep it in mind. But Wang, he mentioned something else to me.”
"What is it?" Wang Baixi asked.
Bruce said he had never heard of having a brother and was shocked by it. He said he would check it out himself and that we shouldn't bother Martha with anything yet.
"Alright. It seems we'll have to handle the Lincoln March and the Riddler issues ourselves."
Tim leaned back in his chair. "Where should we start? Joshua said you have to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Wayne Group's groundbreaking tomorrow. Can you get that done in the next two days?"
“Sigh, you can’t get fat in one bite.” Wang Baixi naturally didn’t expect to get things done in two days. “However, the two things do need to be done in order. I plan to visit Lincoln March first tomorrow, and then have Kelvin start with the court.”
After speaking, Wang Baixi looked at Cassandra.
She sat on a bench at the other end of the training area, unwrapping her boxing bandages. The bandages loosened from her wrists, piling up on the fighting mat at her feet like a small heap of white fallen leaves. She didn't look up at Wang Baixi, but her movements noticeably slowed, as if she was waiting for him to speak first.
Wang Baixi led her over and calmly sat down at the other end of the bench.
“I shouldn’t have scared you like that, Cassandra.”
“I’ve been playing different roles lately—a court boss, Batman, a successful businessman—thinking three steps ahead before I speak or act. My mind has never stopped." Wang Baixi leaned forward, resting his arms on his thighs, without turning to look at her. “When I’m with you, I don’t have to think so much. So I was just about to make a joke, how should I put it…”
As he said this, he suddenly realized that his words were illogical. There was no causal relationship between impersonating someone else and pretending to be dead to amuse her. He just wanted to be a jerk.
"Anyway, I'm very sorry."
When the other person doesn't know what to say, you should express your feelings in the most direct way.
Cassandra set aside the bandage she was halfway untying and turned to look at him. Traces of her crying still lingered in her eyes, but the flush on her face had mostly faded.
She raised her hands and made several gestures, her movements slower than usual.
"I don't want anyone to get hurt because of me."
Wang Baixi knew nothing of these things, nor did he know how many people had fallen before her throughout her life. She had been trained from childhood to be a killing machine, her hands stained with blood. So when he heard these words, he felt a pang of melancholy.
"No, I promise. Next time, I'll try a different way to die, like laughing to death."
Cassandra looked up at him, her lips twitching.
“You’re annoying.” Cassandra stood on the stool and touched his messy hair, a tactless response he had given her when they first met. Then, she gestured a goodnight before turning and walking toward the stairs leading to the manor house.
Wang Baixi watched her figure disappear around the corner of the stairs, then turned his gaze back to the pile of half-untied bandages on the ground.
Chapter 107 Head Surgery
It's still the Bat Cave, and it's still Tim and Wang Baixi.
"Hmm, bandages..."
After finishing his work, Tim walked over to Wang Baixi. He looked at Wang Baixi and suddenly muttered something, so he couldn't help but ask, "What are you thinking about, Wang?"
“Detective,” Wang Baixi paused, picking up the bandage as he did so, “why do you think that bandaged weirdo chose bandages as his disguise?”
“If someone is wearing bandages, it’s either because they’re injured or they don’t want to show their true face,” Tim pondered.
Wang Baixi nodded in agreement, while letting out a cold laugh: "If it's the latter, it means his true colors are too eye-catching."
So, who in Gotham meets this condition?
Perhaps, both are possible.
"So, you have someone in mind?"
“A two-faced man, Harvey Dent, the two-faced man,” Wang Baixi suddenly said with certainty.
Having been in Gotham for so many days, he had never fought Two-Face, and hadn't even seen him when Bane was causing trouble. This bandaged monster was very likely this guy.
“It could also be Black Mask,” Tim thought, stroking his chin. “It’s just that we haven’t seen Two-Face in a long time. I’ll try my best to investigate, but we can’t be sure that this guy is definitely doing something bad, right?”
Gotham is full of strange and eccentric people.
There are even giant flying bats dressed in all black in this city!
"Indeed, judging from the current situation... he's just an ordinary citizen with bandages on his face."
……
“We need to remove the bandages first,” Thomas Elliott instructed.
The cold white light of the operating lights shone on Lincoln March's face, which was no longer recognizable.
Thomas Elliott took the scissors from the nurse and cut a clean incision along the edge of the bandage wrapped around Lincoln's head.
Then, the gauze soaked in iodine and bloodstains loosened layer by layer, revealing the laceration that stretched from the temple all the way to the jawbone.
The wound had been stitched up, the black sutures forming a neat centipede-like pattern on the bluish-purple swollen skin.
"The pupils reflex to light is normal, and the intracranial pressure has decreased."
Thomas put the pen-shaped flashlight back into his breast pocket and took off his blood-stained rubber gloves, throwing them into the medical waste bin. "Observe for another forty-eight hours. If there is no more bleeding, you can be transferred to a regular ward."
He pushed open the operating room door and walked into the corridor, where he saw two unexpected visitors.
Wang Baixi was sitting on a bench in the corridor, with a young Asian female assistant in a black suit standing next to him. The assistant was holding a folder in her arms and had an indifferent expression.
“Mr. Wang?” Thomas stopped and took off his surgical cap. “What are you doing here?”
He had assumed it would be Lincoln March's men and partners, since he was an orphan and if anyone was to visit him, it should be them.
To everyone's surprise, the person who arrived was Wang Baixi.
It seems he is really concerned about Lincoln March's condition.
“I’ve come to visit Mr. Lincoln.” Wang Boxi stood up from the bench and said earnestly, “He was with me during the attack yesterday, so it’s only right that I come to see how he is doing. By the way, this is my assistant.”
Cassandra nodded to Thomas.
"Hello, I'm Thomas." Thomas smiled.
“Mr. Thomas, I didn’t expect you to be Lincoln’s attending physician.”
"Don't be surprised. This is my specialty. The people from March Ventures approached me, hoping I could perform this surgery for their CEO, and I naturally agreed. After all, Mr. Lincoln, like you, is an idealist."
"How is he?" Wang Baixi asked with a complicated expression.
He did not detect any signs of death, confirming that Lincoln March was not dead.
“Mr. Lincoln’s concussion is quite severe. The attacker fractured his skull when he knocked him down, and fragments of the bone became embedded in the dura mater. It took me almost three hours to remove them all. He will be at least two days before he regains consciousness,” Thomas replied.
"Fragments of bone fracture?"
"Yes. To put it bluntly, if that shot had been two centimeters off target, you wouldn't need to come see him now; you could just go to the funeral home to lay flowers."
"He's really lucky," Wang Baixi said in surprise.
He absolutely did not expect this.
“Yes.” Thomas put his hands in the pockets of his white coat. “Speaking of which, I’ve heard about what happened at the rooftop restaurant yesterday. Mr. Wang, you were quite lucky to get out of that situation unscathed.”
“He was just lucky.” Wang Baixi smiled. “I won’t disturb your work any longer, Dr. Elliott. Please let me know when he wakes up.”
“Definitely. By the way,” Thomas added before he turned around, “the real estate transfer process led by your Wayne Group has officially started. Keep it up, Mr. Wang.”
"Keep it up, you too."
Wang Baixi led Cassandra towards the elevator. After the elevator doors closed, only the hum of the mechanical cables could be heard in the enclosed car.
“This doesn’t make sense,” Wang Baixi said, looking at his reflection in the elevator door.
Cassandra turned her head to look at him.
“If the Claw attack yesterday was arranged by Lincoln March, then he should have been fine after being attacked on the spot after convincing me. But as Thomas said, he almost died. If he really is the mastermind, how fearless must the mastermind be to do such a thing? But if he is innocent…” Wang Baixi paused here, “Then all the reasoning that Tim and I made in the car last night will be overturned.”
It seems there's only one possibility: amber gold.
He has a way to ensure his survival.
If this point is proven false, then he is truly innocent!
After thinking it over, the elevator stopped at the ground floor, the doors slid open, and the two immediately stepped out and entered the hospital lobby. Finally, they exited the hospital, where a black limousine was already parked below the entrance. The driver was Lark from the Penguin Gang, and Kelvin Ross was in the passenger seat.
