“And then there’s Barbara.” Laughing continued walking, his tone light as if reciting a shopping list. “That redhead, you dragged her into this mess, and now she’s spent the rest of her life in a wheelchair. Now that she’s finally managed to stand up, she’s gone back to being bedridden. Who do you think is to blame?”

“She’s braver than you,” Bruce said.

“Of course she’s braver than me, but what’s the price of her bravery? It’s you.” The Laughing Man stopped and leaned close to Bruce, so close he could see his own reflection in Bruce’s pupils. “You’ve recruited one kid after another, Dick, Jason, Tim, Cassandra, and now you’ve even dragged Damian into this mess. You’ve made them wear your colors to get beaten, to bleed, to die. Batman, what’s the difference between you and me? I kill people, and you kill people too. I kill strangers, you kill children, your dearest people.”

Bruce closed his eyes.

Just then, Thomas Wayne's voice suddenly came from a great distance: "Don't be afraid, Bruce."

“I’m not like you, Joker.” Bruce opened his eyes. “Yes, we may all die at any moment, perhaps from violence, perhaps from other causes, but what matters is what we are doing in the moment before we die, and what makes our lives great.”

"The Joker, they didn't die for me. They chose their own lives, their own deaths, their own fate."

Xiao Ke's smile froze for a moment.

His face began to contort, as if an invisible hand was kneading the paint-covered skin. His mouth opened and closed, uttering a few incoherent syllables.

Darkness cracked open beneath Bruce's feet, and light poured in through the crack.

……

The sound of an engine came from the entrance of the bat cave.

Wang Baixi was the first to jump out of the car. His coat was stained with blood, but his face showed little sign of fatigue. Zatana and Cassandra followed behind him. Damian was the last to get out of the car, carrying a black body bag on his shoulder. He walked with his chest out and head held high, as if carrying a flag of trophy.

Tim came up from his computer and glanced at them first: "Are you all alright?"

"It's nothing." Wang Baixi took off his blood-stained coat and threw it on a chair, glancing past Tim towards the medical area. "How's Bruce?"

“It’s getting worse,” Tim said, frowning. “The nitrous oxide is spreading through his body faster than expected. Barbara is in a similar situation; both of their body temperatures are rising. Alfred is over there watching over them.”

Wang Baixi strode to the medical bedside and glanced down at Bruce. Bruce's eyes were closed, his forehead was covered in cold sweat, and the unnatural curve of his lips twitched from time to time.

He doesn't look too good.

“His brainwaves are fluctuating wildly,” Tim said, looking troubled.

"What do we do now? Will my father die?" Damian asked, leaning closer, his tone surprisingly excited.

"Shut up." Wang Baixi slapped the back of his head. "Your dad is already like this, and you're still saying these unlucky things."

Damian covered the back of his head and glared at him: "I was just asking a question."

Jason emerged from the shadows. He had been watching silently the whole time, until now, when he spoke, his voice lower than usual: "You brought the Joker's body back?"

Wang Baixi gestured with his chin toward Damian. Damian put the body bag on the ground and unzipped it. "That's right, although it's not the one you're familiar with, we've finally found a complete corpse."

Then, Xiaoke's face was revealed, with a bullet hole between his eyebrows and his skin beginning to turn gray, but the corners of his mouth were still upturned.

Jason stared at the face, a laugh escaping his throat. "Ah... this is the last one. He got off easy." Jason took a half step back, his gaze still fixed on Laugher's face. "I was going to snap his neck myself."

What's there to regret?

“Then I’ll leave all three for you next time,” Wang Baixi casually replied.

“All three are dead. There’s no chance for a next time.” Jason’s tone was ambiguous, neither relieved nor disappointed.

Zatana walked over to Wang Baixi, glanced at him, and lowered her voice: "Wang, you don't look well. Has something happened at Black Gate Prison?"

Wang Baixi paused for a moment. He recalled the image of Death standing between him and Xiao Ke, and he subconsciously touched his face: "Really? I'm perfectly healthy."

Zatana looked at him, but didn't press for details. She simply shook her head gently and said, "...Never mind, just be careful."

“I can tell you’ve been in a fierce battle…” Tim sighed, not wanting to bring up their bloodshed. “How’s the Penguin? Did you capture him?”

Cassandra nodded and replied, "We got it. We took out the amber gold he was talking about."

"Well done."

If you're dead, you're dead. Don't come back to life!

Then, the sound of wheels came from the direction of the tunnel, and a modified refrigerated truck stopped in the maintenance area. Victor Frith got out of the driver's seat, Nora followed behind him, and the two walked quickly towards the medical area.

“Victor!!” Wang Baixi shouted at them.

We finally made it!

“I came as soon as I got the news.” Victor glanced at Bruce and Barbara on the other bed, his brows immediately furrowing. “What happened to them?”

“They’re both running fevers and are in unstable mental states,” Tim sighed. “Victor, we have to do as we say and freeze them temporarily. Then we’ll look for an antidote.”

This is exactly what Mr. Freeze did to Nora. Hopefully, Batman and Barbara can pull through, otherwise they might have to get Wang Baixi involved again.

"Let's get started," Wang Baixi said.

"Wait." Victor raised his hand. "Bat... Bruce doesn't have Amber Gold in his body. Freezing him directly will damage his organs."

"Don't worry, I'm the person who controls the most amber gold in all of Gotham!" Wang Baixi chuckled and pulled a small gold tooth from his inner coat pocket: "This was taken from a Penguin. Although it's not specially made, it should still work."

Victor stared at the light for a few seconds, then nodded: "I'll do my best, Nora, help me prepare the diluent."

“Okay.” Nora immediately went to the medical cabinet and began to prepare.

Isn't she an athlete? How did she end up as Mr. Freeze's science assistant? Is this some new hobby of Mr. Freeze's?

Wang Baixi smiled, puzzled. "Victor, your wife really listens to you."

“You talk too much nonsense.” Victor said without turning his head.

……

Ten minutes later.

Tim pushed Barbara's medical bed next to the cryogenic chamber that Mr. Freeze had prepared. Victor first secured the monitoring patch to Barbara, then turned to Bruce, and slowly injected the amber gold into Bruce's vein after it had been degraded into a liquid.

“Okay, their temperatures are dropping.” Tim stared at the monitoring screen. “Their heart rate has also dropped from 120 to 88.”

“Not enough,” Victor adjusted the parameters of the cryogenic chamber. “It needs to be lowered to thirty-two degrees before we can enter the chamber.”

Jason stood on the outside, arms crossed, his gaze fixed on Bruce's face. That unnatural smile was still there, like a scar etched on Bruce's face, so much so that Jason couldn't bear to look at it for long.

“He’ll pull through, Jason. We have to believe in him.” Alfred had somehow appeared next to Jason.

In truth, Alfred wasn't entirely certain, but he always believed it, ever since Bruce traveled the world.

He believed his life could triumph over death time and time again, and often that belief needed no reason. Just like religion.

“I’m not worried about him,” Jason said.

"Then why are you trembling, young master Jason?" Alfred pointed out gently.

Jason turned his face away. "I didn't."

I meant your fingers.

“You!” Jason paused, then put his hands in his pockets and turned his face away. “Pennyworth, you’re always making a fuss.”

“This is my job,” Alfred said. “My job is to take care of you.”

……

Ten minutes later.

Finally, the preparations were complete, and Bruce and Barbara were moved into the cryogenic chamber one after the other. As the door closed, pale white cold air condensed on the inner wall.

Okay, now comes the real challenge.

“The person is frozen, but I’m not a doctor. What are you going to do now?” the person with severe cryofreeze said.

Wang Baixi turned to look at the body bag on the ground: "We must find the answers from that guy now."

Since the laughing gas virus was used to create the Joker, let's look for the answer in Bernie's best products! Wang Baixi doesn't want Batman to fall into the form of the Laughing Bat, because then he wouldn't be able to stay in this universe, and he would have to either run away or commit suicide.

“You’re going to dissect him here?” Jason frowned. “This is a bat cave.”

“It’s not like this is the first time I’ve done dirty work here.” Wang Baixi squatted down and reached out to Tim. “Tim, give me the sampling tools.”

"Do you really think this will work?" Tim took a portable sampling kit from the medical cabinet and handed it to him. Wang Baixi put on gloves and collected blood, saliva, and tissue samples from Xiao Ke's body, sealing them into test tubes.

Afterwards, Wang Baixi handed the test tube to Tim, who took it and quickly walked towards the analyzer. Zatana walked to Wang Baixi's side and whispered, "Wang Baixi, I'll go help Tim analyze the data. You take a break."

“I’m not tired.” Wang Baixi looked at Zatana with surprise.

That's strange, Zatana is actually concerned about him.

“You’ve been running all night,” Zatana said, looking at him. “Don’t push yourself.”

Wang Baixi smiled and said, "Okay, I'll sit for a while. But don't think of me as being too delicate."

“I don’t think that way,” Zatana said, turning and walking toward the analyzer.

……

The next ten minutes felt exceptionally long. Tim and Zatanna were conducting all sorts of crazy experiments, including those involving Mr. Freeze, the scientific researcher. Perhaps what they needed was a proper doctor; that would be best.

Meanwhile, Wang Baixi and Cassandra were looking into the distance. They couldn't do any technical work and could only watch Bruce lie in the cryogenic chamber, his body occasionally twitching, the veins on his forehead bulging and then subsiding.

Alfred stood outside the cabin, his hands clasped in front of him, his lips pressed into a thin line.

“Damn, are you really sure that will work?” Jason suddenly whispered.

"What else can I do? Wait for Bruce to wake up on his own? The Joker already said that the virus is specially made..." Wang Baixi said helplessly.

But at that moment, Bruce's eyes actually opened!

The first thing he saw was the cold air condensing on the walls of the cryogenic chamber, and then Alfred's old but familiar face.

"Young Master!?" Alfred's voice trembled. "Quick, Tim! Young Master Jason! Young Master Damian, and Mr. Wang, the Young Master is awake!"

Everyone was stunned. They were still figuring out how to solve the Joker's mystery when this good news came. Victor immediately turned around, opened the hatch of the cryogenic chamber, and Alfred was the first to step forward and help Bruce up from the chamber.

Bruce's smile had faded; he was soaking wet and his lips were purple, likely indicating a heart condition.

“I’m back,” Bruce said in a hoarse voice.

Alfred didn't say anything, but simply squeezed his hand tightly.

“That’s a line from Terminator.” Wang Baixi smiled, but something felt off to him.

Was the clown playing a trick on him? That can't be right.

Meanwhile, Jason, the most stubborn and awkward one, stood a few steps away watching Bruce, and Bruce subconsciously looked at him as well.

Well, as always, neither of them spoke first, or rather, neither of them was willing to speak first.

Wang Baixi stood up from the bench, walked behind Jason, and gently pushed him: "Go over there, what are you standing there for?"

Jason stumbled forward a couple of steps after being pushed, then glared at Wang Baixi before looking back at Bruce.
