Wang Baixi glanced at the corridor leading to the foyer, then casually flicked his right hand. A silver-white magical chain extended from his palm, passed through the corridor, shot straight to the door, wrapped its end around the doorknob, pressed down, and pulled back, opening the door.
Alfred stood outside the door, followed by Cassandra and Tim. Alfred was carrying two paper bags; it was Friday, and he had picked up the two children from school and brought them to Wayne Manor.
As soon as Tim entered, he saw the silver-white chain that was still slowly dissipating in mid-air.
“Wang,” Tim walked into the dining room and tossed his backpack onto the sofa, “it seems you’ve completely mastered using magic to be lazy.”
“That’s right. You can ask me to take out the trash from now on.” Wang Baixi raised his coffee cup and waved it at Tim as a greeting.
Damian suddenly jumped up from the dining table, stood on the tabletop, and said to Tim like a general giving orders, "Hey! Don't interrupt my conversation with Wang Baixi!"
Tim frowned, glanced at Damian, then at Wang Baixi, a knowing look of helplessness on his face.
“His name isn’t Hey, it’s Tim Drake. My dear Master Damian.” Alfred put down the paper bag, intending to mediate the dinner table dispute, but Cassandra had already stepped to the table first.
She stretched out her hand, pointed to the ground, and said to Damian, "Come down."
Damian looked down at Cassandra, whose face was serious, and a mocking smile appeared on his lips.
“Cassandra Cain, who gave you the audacity to speak to me like that? Your parents, David Cain and Lady Shiva, were both members of the League of Assassins, and they were both under the command of Lei Xiaogu. And me? I am Lei Xiaogu's grandson. What do you think you should call me now? How about Young Master?”
Cassandra didn't waste any words with him. She reached out and grabbed the wrist that Damian was pointing at, and gently twisted it in the opposite direction of the joint.
"Ah!" Damian screamed and fell off the dining table, his knees hitting the floor hard. "Let go! It hurts! Let go!"
Cassandra didn't move, just stared at him expressionlessly.
"I was wrong! I'll get down, okay?! Let go!" Damian's voice was already trembling with tears. "Cassandra, Lady Cain, I was wrong!"
“You bastard, you’re even bringing up women to save your own life?” Wang Baixi put down his coffee cup and advised with a theatrical air, “Let him go, Cassandra.”
Cassandra glanced at Wang Baixi, released her grip, and took a half-step back.
Damian rubbed his swollen wrist and plopped down in a chair, glaring at Cassandra with a look of resentment mixed with barely suppressed anger before abruptly looking away. Clearly, this lesson had become a conditioned reflex in his mind.
Cassandra looked around and then at Wang Baixi.
She made a sign language gesture, which, to onlookers, still looked exactly like a hand seal. "Where's Zatana? Didn't she come with you?"
“No.” Wang Baixi shook his head. “She’s still with me. Things haven’t been peaceful in the city lately, so I’ve discussed it with Bruce and we’ve decided to keep her home as much as possible for now.”
"Were you at Wayne Manor all night?" Cassandra asked.
"Yes, I'm sleeping in a guest room on the second floor. How come you didn't notice? No wonder you asked such a question."
Cassandra shrugged. Her meaning was clear: This house is too big for me to notice, I don't even know which room you live in.
Tim deliberately bypassed Damian, who was still rubbing his wrist, and walked around to Wang Baixi's side from the other side of the table, pulling out a chair and sitting down.
"Alright, tell me what happened last night, Wang. Bruce didn't get back until the early hours of the morning, but he didn't tell me anything. Did you two meet up with Jason?"
"We met him. He had a fight with Bruce, and then we let him go."
"You just let him go like that?"
“There’s nothing I can do. Some birds can’t be caged.” Wang Baixi sighed. “He doesn’t want to go back to the Bat Cave, and he doesn’t want to hear Bruce’s explanation. Even if I tie him up with chains and bring him back, what can I do? That’s human trafficking, isn’t it?”
"By the way, at least I got one piece of information from him: he was resurrected a long time ago, and after that the League of Assassins accepted him, and Talia Elgul himself trained him personally."
“My mother?” Damian asked in surprise.
"Yes, your mother."
“This Jason sounds like a really nasty guy,” Damian chimed in, his tone laced with disdain. “But honestly, I’ve been in the League of Assassins for so long and I’ve never heard my mother mention Jason Todd before.”
Has the battle for the crown prince begun? The two have already started arguing remotely before even meeting.
"Your mother is too lazy to even tell you who your biological father is, do you think she would mention Jason Todd to you?" Wang Baixi replied casually.
Damian was speechless, his face turning bright red. He opened his mouth to refute, but racking his brains, he couldn't find any solid evidence, so he could only kick the table leg hard.
“You win, Oriental.” Damian sat down angrily, his eyes still glancing at Cassandra every now and then. “So what do you plan to do now? Keep looking for that Jason Todd?”
"No, the main concern is the Joker."
“Beware of… the Joker? But he’s already…” A hint of confusion flashed in Damian’s eyes.
"Kids shouldn't meddle in adult matters." Wang Baixi was too lazy to talk to him. Want more information? Then go ask your dear father.
Tim and Cassandra both looked at Wang Baixi.
“The most urgent thing is to protect me, Barbara, and Jason.” Wang Baixi briefly reiterated the conclusions he had reached with Bruce yesterday. “The Joker is likely planning to kidnap one of us and use him to create a brand new Joker.”
"Oh?" Damian's eyes lit up. "That sounds cool!"
He seemed to accept the premise of having three clowns very quickly.
"Someone's going to find him something to do! Alfred, can't you get him a student registration too?!"
Chapter 139
Meanwhile, in a narrow alley in Gotham's underground black market, Jason Todd, wearing sunglasses, a hat pulled low, and a trench coat, pushed open an unmarked iron door.
The walls of the shop were covered with modified firearms and tactical accessories. Behind the counter sat a fat man with a shaved head, who was using a screwdriver to remove a circuit board. He looked like the owner of Xie's black shop.
But when the iron gate was pushed open, the hinges screeching, he didn't even lift his eyelids, only slowly replying:
"The shop is already closed. Please come back tomorrow."
Jason walked straight to the counter, placed the red hood with a large tear on it on the counter, and took out a palm-sized scanning module from the inside pocket of his jacket, placing it next to the hood.
“I’m not here to buy anything.” Jason paused. “Could you fix this helmet for me and solder this chip back in?”
The boss then put down the screwdriver and glanced at the two items on the table. He picked up the hood, turned it over, and ran his fingers along the edge of the crack.
"This crack must have been caused by something hard hitting it, right?"
“I used him as a shield,” Jason said coldly.
"Alright then." After saying that, the boss picked up the scanning module and looked at it under the light. He raised an eyebrow, then looked down and examined it closely for a few seconds. "The interface of your chip is military standard. I don't have a matching adapter board here."
“Don’t worry about the interface, just solder the chip directly onto the headgear’s motherboard. I’ll handle the rest,” Jason interrupted.
The boss weighed the chip in his hand, glanced at Jason, and quoted a price.
"Three hundred in total."
Jason pulled three bills from his pocket and slapped them on the counter. The boss took the money, turned around, opened the soldering station on the workbench, put on his magnifying glass, and started working.
About twenty minutes later, the shopkeeper pushed the repaired headgear back in front of Jason. Jason glanced at it briefly; the crack had been filled with epoxy resin, the scanning module was firmly soldered to the center of the motherboard, and a green indicator light was flashing rhythmically.
"The scanning module is already powered on; you'll have to go back and do the rest of the calibration yourself."
Jason put on the helmet, activated the system, and a scanning interface popped up on the head-up display inside the helmet. He took a small sealed bag from his belt, which contained the biological sample he had scraped from the floor of the cryogenic workshop: it was the Joker's remaining skin tissue from the scene.
According to his speculation, there must be some common biological information among the three Jokers. Otherwise, given his many years of experience working with Batman, it's impossible that Batman only recently began to suspect the existence of three Jokers.
So something must have confused them.
It's possible that their skin was corroded by the same chemical products.
Whatever it is, he will find it and then wipe out the remaining two clowns as well. He's not trying to prove he's better than Batman; he just wants to vent his anger.
And nothing is more satisfying than killing your enemy with your own hands.
He placed the sample on the sensor interface on the side of the headgear, and the scanning module immediately began to work.
Various data are extracted, encoded, and then cross-referenced with the Gotham Police Department's forensic database via a communication module built into the helmet.
The search area on the screen narrowed from the entire city to the old town, then to the industrial area on the east side, and finally settled on one address:
Gotham City Swimming Pool, located on the east side of the Old Town, has been abandoned for about seven years.
Great, I'm starting to get somewhere.
After thinking it over, Jason pushed open the iron gate and went out. He got on his motorcycle and headed straight for his destination without saying a word.
……
When he arrived at the swimming pool gate, he discovered that the chain on the iron gate had been cut. Notably, the rust on the broken iron had been accidentally scraped off, revealing new iron underneath.
What does this mean? If the world's greatest detective were still here, he would surely stop Jason with a straight face and say to him: Kid, watch out! This door has been opened recently, and more than once.
Ugh, I've had enough.
Jason scoffed, boldly pushed open the iron door, and went inside. He walked through the locker room corridor strewn with broken glass. The further he went, the stronger the stench became, and despite the mask filtering it, it still made him uncomfortable.
He frowned, thinking: This smells like clown laughing gas.
He walked forward while thinking, but when he entered the main pool area, he was stunned.
He had clearly prepared himself mentally long ago.
The dried-up pool floor was littered with people lying haphazardly, their skin as white as wax, their lips cut into eerie curves, and their mouths painted with red paint.
These people's chests were still rising and falling slightly, but their pupils had already dilated to the size of pinpoints.
All that came out of their throats was indistinct laughter, and blood flowed from their mouths or eye sockets, through their bodies, and down to the bottom of the pool.
What are these lunatics doing?!
Jason Todd's hand unconsciously went to the hilt of his gun, and he walked quietly down the edge of the pool, his eyes quickly scanning the crowd at the bottom.
Just then, he saw a man whose face hadn't been cut open yet. He was curled up in the corner of the pool, trembling all over and covered in blood.
Jason took two steps, and the man hurriedly turned around. He stared at Jason as if he had seen a ghost, and his lips trembled for a long time before he managed to squeeze out a sentence.
"Save me, please, save me..."
Jason strode over and knelt down in front of him, grabbing his shoulders. "Who did this to you? Where is the person who did this?"
"They...they were just here...over there..."
Before he could finish speaking, a sharp laugh suddenly erupted from behind Jason.
Before Jason could turn around, a crowbar slammed into his back.
"Hehehe! Should I call you Red Hood, or 'Jason Todd'?"
"I thought Batman would appear first, but his little bird appeared first!"
"But it doesn't matter much, we've been waiting for you for a long time anyway!"
