Conan, I'm an actor

“I don’t want to connect these things, after all, it involves the Suzuki family and professional assassins…” Megure sighed. “By the way, you said Shinjo broke the assassin’s knee without using a scope?”
"This is what Mr. Shinjo said; it might just be him..."
“No, bullet holes were indeed found in the two knees of the deceased, but at this distance…” Inspector Megure glanced at the guy on the recliner, “I hope the owner of that bullet wasn’t him.”
Since the U.S. military denied that the .408 bullet belonged to them, the security level in Tokyo has been raised several levels, and the number of bodyguards for dignitaries has doubled.
The cabinet has repeatedly urged them to find the sniper as soon as possible, but the police have been unusually slow to act. If the sniper is indeed an insider in the police force, then the police's attitude is not entirely incomprehensible.
Chapter 140 Exposes Inheritance Dispute
Two hours later, Shinjo, still half asleep, felt something touching his face. He groggily opened his eyes and, upon seeing Megure's chubby face, suddenly realized he was in the Metropolitan Police Department.
"What the hell?" Shinjo slapped the thing off his cheek.
"Eat breakfast first, and if you're still sleepy, sleep a little longer." Inspector Megure placed the ice cream and a breakfast on the table.
"Ask whatever you want," Shinjo said wearily. "After you're done, find someone to take me back to the research institute. I'll feel safer sleeping there. This Metropolitan Police Department is drafty; I can't sleep well here."
Megure looked somewhat embarrassed; this guy was mocking the Metropolitan Police Department for its inefficiency.
"Okay, you went to the Suzuki family villa last night, right?" Inspector Megure stared at Shinjo and asked, "Where did you get that information? And why did you go to that villa?"
“The message came from Shinichi Kudo. Go check his number’s records,” Shinjo said wearily. “I went there after asking Conan and learning that they were indeed in danger. As you know, Koshimizu was attacked this morning, and I usually don’t leave her side.”
Inspector Megure frowned. How did Kudo get dragged into this again? Nevertheless, he asked Takagi, who was standing next to him, to check Kudo's number.
Judging from the situation, Xincheng is also having a headache. This matter has blown up, and it's unclear how long it will take to complete the entire process.
"The three people who attacked you yesterday were probably professional hitmen. Do you have any leads, like if you've offended anyone recently?" Inspector Megure asked, frowning. "It could be a financial or emotional dispute."
"There shouldn't be any emotional entanglements..." Xincheng said with absolute certainty, resting his chin on his hand.
"Mr. Shinjo, how can you be so sure?" Officer Sato asked, somewhat doubtfully.
“In the past, when we were on missions, we had a few partners who pretended to be lovers, but they were all unlucky. They died in the mission as soon as they confirmed their relationship.” Shinjo shrugged helplessly. “The shortest was 3 days, and the longest was 9 months.”
Sato wanted to say a few words of comfort to Shinjo, but thinking of the even worse fate of his fallen comrades, he swallowed his words.
“Brother Shinjo, this is an interrogation. Please be serious and don’t joke around.” Inspector Megure coughed. “Please answer the questions seriously.”
"Alright then." Shinjo leaned back in his chair. "Because I'm still single, no ex-girlfriends, and no romantic entanglements. Of course, that's just because I'm too busy with work, definitely not..."
"No need for explanations. As for the property dispute, you've recently acquired quite a bit of property. Is it possible that..." Inspector Megure asked expressionlessly, though the slight twitching of the muscles at the corner of his mouth betrayed the fact that he wanted to laugh.
Officer Sato, standing beside her, breathed a sigh of relief. She had actually thought that Shinjo had a "wife-killing" attribute; that would have been too tragic.
“This is important! Never mind, you wouldn’t understand even if I told you.” Xincheng thought for a moment. “If we’re talking about property disputes, then there are some, and quite a few. You should have already investigated, right? I recently received a substantial amount of inheritance.”
Inspector Megure and Inspector Sato sat up straight, realizing that the important part was about to begin.
“This inheritance was left by my partner. He was an agent belonging to another intelligence agency, codenamed Jiang Xiaobai, but his real name is unknown.” Xincheng shrugged. “He and I were undercover in the same organization. He made some money by taking advantage of his position, but unfortunately, the organization discovered us.”
"and then?"
“Then he disappeared, and his body was never found.” Shinjo shrugged. “Before he disappeared, he distributed his assets and entrusted them to a law firm for management. If they couldn’t contact him for a certain period of time, the law firm would assume he was dead and, according to his will, would transfer his assets to my name. I have already received a portion of them.”
"Just for some inheritance, these people hired professional hitmen to kill you?"
“To correct you, you mean hundreds of billions, or even trillions of dollars.” Xincheng shrugged. “I currently have over a billion dollars in inheritance, and the rest will be transferred to my name over the next two years.”
Inspector Megure was stunned for a few seconds. If he remembered correctly, this guy had just received a Twilight Villa made entirely of pure gold. How come someone else was giving him money? This guy's luck was just too good.
"You mean, if you die too, these assets will revert to that organization's name? Is that how I understand it?" Inspector Megure suppressed the strange emotions in his heart. "Do you know who will inherit these assets?"
“It’s a few foundations, I think. I need to contact the law firms to find out the specific names.” Shinjo shrugged. “But I only know some of the law firms. The rest haven’t contacted me yet because it’s not time.”
"alright."
After Shinjo submitted the list of those foundations, Inspector Megure asked him some more questions and then personally escorted him back to the research institute.
His car and the rifle are being kept at the Metropolitan Police Department. The gun will be confiscated, and the car will be handled by the insurance company and the Metropolitan Police Department later.
“Those foundations are all owned by that black-clad organization. Didn’t you say you didn’t want to involve the Metropolitan Police Department?” Karen asked, somewhat puzzled.
“These foundations are basically operating and registered in the United States.” Shinjo stretched. “The Metropolitan Police Department doesn’t have the capability to investigate there. Even if their boss gets involved, the other side will at most agree to a joint investigation. Given the Metropolitan Police Department’s capabilities, plus the organization’s influence in the United States, the end result is that they won’t find anything.”
"Then why did you give them the list? Isn't that redundant?"
"Prepare evidence of these foundations' tax evasion and submit it to the IRS. Also, check if any of the organizations have anyone in the IRS. If so, provide their financial information to TIGTA." Shinjo opened the door of the research institute directly. "These people collect so much tax revenue; they should at least do some work."
What's in it for you?
"Part of the organization's income comes from smear campaigns, which are used to blackmail celebrities, wealthy businessmen, and politicians. The organization has never paid taxes on this money, as far as I know, for over a decade. This work used to be handled by Rum, but after his eye injury a few years ago, he gradually handed it over to his subordinates. Consider this my little revenge against him, a small appetizer, I suppose."
"I have another question. Did you write these names on the will a year ago?"
"Pretty much. It's because Rum bit me so hard back then. I was thinking that even if I died, I would still get back at him."
"You really are quite insidious."
Chapter 141 The Reasons for the Attack on Cognac
In an outdoor parking lot
"Rum's assassination attempt failed." Vermouth hung up the phone.
"Two attacks in two days, and both failed." A smile appeared on Amuro Tooru's lips. "I'm curious to see what Cognac will do."
"You seem quite pleased," Vermouth said, looking at Amuro Tooru with some surprise.
“The one in the organization who cares most about that person is Rum, like a hyena.” Amuro Tooru looked at Vermouth beside him. “So, why is Rum causing trouble for Cognac?”
Vermouth looked out the window, seemingly not intending to speak.
"It's said that this assassin is from Binga's faction, the last one was Curaçao." Amuro started the car. "He's Rum's right-hand man, this is no ordinary level of importance."
“Cognac provided intelligence about ocean buoys,” Vermouth began. “While investigating this intelligence, I discovered that Rum was also investigating this building. My men were arrested, and the source of the intelligence was also revealed.”
"Rum suspects that there's a Cognac mole among his men?"
“No, the truth is that the intelligence provided by Cognac is more complete than that of Rum. That ocean buoy is still under construction, and even the engineers who built it don’t know what it’s for.” Vermouth’s eyes gleamed with a strange light. “Much of the information is top secret within Interpol, known only to a few high-ranking officials. Rum wants to seize this lead.”
"If I remember correctly, Cognac should be yours. Rum wants to take it, so what are you going to do...?"
“Cognac and I are just business partners. If Rum wants to take him away, I have no objection.”
"And what about Binga? Didn't Rum want to acquire Cognac for his own use? Why would he send someone to assassinate him?"
“That guy is a mad dog,” Vermouth sneered. “He’s extremely ambitious and obsessed with climbing the social ladder. He’ll do anything to get there. His target used to be Gin, but ever since Gin was bitten by Cognac, his target seems to have changed.”
"Oh? Looks like there's going to be a good show."
"When two mad dogs collide, one of them will eventually be bitten to death."
"So what is our stance?" Amuro Tooru tightened his grip on the steering wheel slightly. "Is it to help Cognac, or to stand idly by?"
“Tokyo is Gin’s territory, so let Gin worry about this problem.” Vermouth stretched her neck. “Whether he can handle this mad dog, Cognac, depends on his ability.”
Just then, they passed the intersection where the assassination had occurred in the early hours of the morning. The intersection was now cordoned off, and a human wall had been erected at the crime scene, preventing anyone from getting close.
Just then, three figures, two adults and one child, walked over from a distance.
"Is that the child you've been keeping an eye on?" Vermouth frowned as she looked at Amuro Tooru beside her. "You seem a little nervous. Is there anything special about this child?"
"I just thought he looked a bit like a very famous Japanese detective. You should have heard of him, Shinichi Kudo," Amuro Tooru said. "Cognac seemed quite interested in him, so I..."
"There's nothing special about it. Shouldn't you be focusing on your work? The organization's influence in Japan has been severely damaged, and we need manpower in many places. You didn't come to Tokyo for a vacation."
Amuro Tooru looked at Vermouth with a strange expression. Vermouth seemed reluctant to let him investigate Conan Edogawa too much. But Conan Edogawa had only appeared in the last few months. Could it be that this woman had a past with Shinichi Kudo? He needed to find an opportunity to probe.
Shopping street
"It must be that Shinjo guy cursing me, damn it!" Kogoro Mori clutched the horse pass in his hand. "It must be that rider's fault!"
"I think the problem is the horse, not the rider. There were reports before that Megumi McQueen had a broken bone and was overweight. It's already pretty good that it has two problems this time. It's Uncle who is too greedy," Conan complained from the side.
"You little brat, what do you know? This is a reward from the Emperor!" Kogoro Mori looked at his empty wallet. "Three-peat! Why did I have to make such a mistake? My money!"
Xiaolan sighed helplessly, "I think Dad, you should listen to Mr. Xincheng's advice and give up pachinko and horse racing."
"What's going on over there? Why are there so many police officers?" Conan's attention was drawn to the police officers as he passed the intersection.
"Why don't we go take a look? We have nothing better to do anyway," Kogoro Mouri said, stroking his chin. "Let me, the great detective Kogoro, help these cops out of their predicament."
Conan gave a helpless smile. Solving problems? You're lucky if you don't cause trouble for others.
As he thought this, he followed Kogoro Mouri to the edge of the crowd and looked inside, quickly spotting the damaged shops.
"Officer Takagi, what exactly happened here?" Mori quickly found someone he knew and greeted him very familiarly.
"Sir, this is an important crime scene. You are not allowed to enter without permission." At this moment, a chubby police officer blocked Kogoro Mouri's way.
“Chiba, this is Mr. Kogoro Mouri.” Takagi walked over. “He’s an acquaintance of Inspector Megure and has helped us a lot.”
“But the rules…” Chiba was interrupted by Takagi before he could finish speaking.
“Mr. Mori, I’m so sorry, but I really can’t tell you about this case.” Takagi gestured for Chiba to go and help, while saying to Kogoro Mori, “If you really want to know about the case, you can ask Inspector Megure.”
"Alright, I won't cause you any more trouble." Kogoro Mouri glanced at the scene, his gaze lingering on the trash can for a moment, before turning and leaving.
When Conan heard about the "major case," he became much more alert, but because of his short stature, he couldn't see any useful clues.
Seeing that Kogoro Mouri had no intention of staying, he had no choice but to go back with the uncle.
"Dad, what's going on inside?" Xiaolan asked, puzzled. "Why are there so many police officers?"
"I don't know." Kogoro Mouri turned his head and glanced at the crowd behind him, his brows furrowed.
"It looks like just an ordinary car accident scene, but Uncle is the famous detective Sleeping Kogoro, he'll definitely be able to see some different clues." Conan started using reverse psychology.
Kogoro Mouri clearly saw something he hadn't seen, and this method would definitely get him to talk about it.
But this time, he was going to be disappointed. Kogoro Mouri remained silent, as if he were a mute.
New York Chapter: Jiang Xiaobai Side Story (Part 1)
New York, USA
It was raining heavily in New York at that moment, and there were only a few pedestrians hurrying along the streets.
Recently, a serial killer nicknamed "Highway Demon" has emerged in this area. He has already killed several people and has yet to be arrested. Most people with sound minds choose to stay at home and avoid going out unless absolutely necessary.
