Originium Arts trigger devices come in all sorts of forms, even books, so it's not surprising.

The ice spear pierced the back of the monster's head, tearing up a lot of flesh and blood, but unfortunately it didn't manage to bury even half of it.

The Stitches raised its hand and crushed the ice spear. Montagnier discovered that the bowl-sized wound on the back of the monster's head was covered with layers of thick ice, and the wound could not heal.

"Old Fei, you shouldn't have let that girl go. If she were here, there might still be hope!" Montani yelled.

“She… has no strength left to cast spells. If she stays here, she will die.”

Old Fei gasped for breath, his aged body hindering his thoughts and preventing him from conjuring an even more icy and chilling spear.

His heart was pounding at a rate that could kill him with a stroke at any moment; his mental strength was like a piano key without strings, unable to produce a note. Most people his age are already buried in the ground, while the remaining few lie in hospital beds on IV drips, preparing to be laid in their coffins at any moment.

"Pah! Her life is precious, but mine is worthless?!"

Montagni shouted, "Don't think I don't know! You gave her the defensive machinery! If that thing were still here, we might have a chance! Damn it—"

At that moment, the Stitches-on monster came up and threw another punch.

Distracted on the battlefield, Montagnier was nearly hammered off the rooftop, but fortunately, Old Ferenc conjured an ice wall in mid-air to increase the resistance for him.

"If you used the energy you have for talking on fighting, you could live longer," Old Fei gave a fairly apt assessment.

"Ugh, ugh... Damn it... I want to live too."

Montagni leaned against the railing on the rooftop, feeling as if his insides were about to be pounded out, but he still didn't let go of the shield he was gripping tightly.

"Who the hell isn't a kid? I'm only twenty-four, I don't have a girlfriend, I'm still a virgin."

Montagni stood up and spat out a mouthful of blood onto the ground.

He had two teeth broken and accidentally swallowed them.

"I must live on, I still want to enjoy my life, I still want to..."

Montagni's voice stopped abruptly, and he felt a heavy weight on his shoulder as he was pulled backward.

An infected person, who had climbed up from outside the rooftop at some unknown time, grabbed him, and a pair of hands covered in mineral crystals pressed down on his shoulders, gripping his flesh tightly.

"No, don't come near me!!" Montani screamed like a banshee.

Montagnier!

Valery ran toward Montagnier, but the Stitches' heavy blow forced him to dodge.

Valery was astonished to discover that each of the human heads on the Stitched Monster's head had the same expression.

They were laughing, laughing with sarcasm.

Valery then realized that this monster... was actually intelligent.

These infected people were actually acting according to his wishes.

Nothing is more terrifying than this.

Silently, Old Fei raised his ice axe, sending four condensed ice shards flying through the air, piercing the skulls of infected individuals in an attempt to rescue Montani. But it wasn't enough; as soon as he used magic to pierce one infected, more would quickly climb up, it was endless.

If they could see it from a third-person perspective, it would be an extremely chilling sight.

It seemed as if all the Oripathy-infected citizens in the city had gathered at this building, crowding together from its perimeter, overlapping one another. Infected people stepped on each other, lifted each other up, like ants striving to reach food at a higher level, forming a towering structure.

On the sixth floor of the military and police building, Jaeger had exhausted all his strength to speak. He could only numbly throw one more punch, trying to stand for one more second. He was facing a herd that would never stop, beasts in human skin, fearless ghosts devoid of pain, driven by mineral energy.

"Help me, help me!!"

Montagni watched as the arms climbed up to him, struggling to break free, and threw his shield to the ground long ago.

"Valerian, old Ferenc, save me—uh uh uh!!"

Montagni's cries for help were muffled by the infected man's hand. To prevent his tongue from being ripped off, he could only bite down hard on the hand. An overwhelming stench assaulted his nostrils, feeling as if he were biting into a piece of sausage that had been rotting for three months. The stench made him want to vomit, but the will to survive forced him to endure it, even if this bite might give him Oripathy.

"Ugh, ugh... ugh!"

Montagnier glanced out of the corner of his eye at his survival tool: his military knife, the knife he had to discard in order to survive.

His right hand gripped the railing tightly, while his left hand reached out towards the saber, as long as he could reach it… as long as he could reach it!!

The next moment, Montagnier's legs left the ground.

Arms wrapped around Montagnier's shoulders tightened around his neck, dragging him backward.

His back pressed against the railing at the edge of the rooftop, his bones groaning.

"Ugh... Pfft..."

Montagni clutched the arm of the infected man who was strangling him with one hand to catch his breath, while his other hand gripped the railing tightly in a final struggle. However, more and more infected men climbed up the human ladder, reaching out to try and get a share.

The infected grabbed Montani's body, tearing off pieces of his clothes mixed with chunks of bloody flesh.

Montani's eyes widened, and a painful howl made him loosen his grip on his teeth. The infected man's hand grabbed his tongue, pulling it through the air and leaving a bloody trail.

"—!!"

Unable to conjure spells, Old Felt scrambled away from the intense battle between Valery and the Stitches, dragging his aged body to Montagnier's side. He raised his ice axe and struck the infected on the head, but the speed at which he swung the axe was far slower than the infected's climbing speed.

Old Fei's hand, which was swinging the ice axe, froze. He saw Montagnier's eyes, which were filled with a twisted hatred, evidence of the annihilation of humanity.

"Old Fei, if you don't fix that broken bridge soon, the first person I bite after I become infected will be you."

—Old Fei's mind echoed with Montagnier's harsh words.

The next second, Montagnier released his grip on the railing and reached out to Old Felipe.

"Hara-wah-ah!!"

Montagni, his tongue ripped out, howled wildly. He grabbed old Fe's bony arm and dragged the old man toward the edge of the rooftop.

With his old and weak body, Lao Fei naturally had no strength to resist, and the two of them fell from the high building.

Throughout, Lao Fei remained silent, quietly watching the young man.

This is why Lao Fei didn't let this person go with Zoya.

If he were to leave with Zoya, Zoya would inevitably be betrayed by Montani at some point and meet a terrible end.

Old Fei closed his eyes, letting his body continue to fall.

Finally, a weary smile appeared on his lips.

"Live well, little girl."

In the dead of night, the bright moon hung in the sky, casting down an incredibly radiant light.

On the rooftop of the abandoned military and police building, Valery spat out the congealed blood and breathed heavily.

He hadn't drunk water in a long time, and he gave the last bit to Zoya. Now his throat felt burning, as if he were trying to swallow a ball of fire, but he just couldn't.

"Haa...haa..."

Valery leaned all his weight on the battering ram, barely managing to maintain his stance, but he no longer had the strength to swing it again.

He is tired.

Blood and energy continued to leak from the wound on his left arm. Without Montani's protection, he was simply unable to defend himself against the monster's attacks while simultaneously launching his own offensive. After enduring two powerful blows that were enough to break a shield, he felt several bones break and embed themselves deep into his internal organs.

Valery's fighting spirit seemed to have drained away with his blood. He witnessed Montagnier dragging Old Ferenc to his death, which dealt him an even greater blow on a spiritual level.

Whether it's good or bad luck, he's seen similar things happen quite often these days, and he's gotten used to it.

At least I won't feel as heartbroken or as guilty as I did the first time.

"It's an honor to meet you, Jaeger."

Valery looked toward his comrade-in-arms at the entrance of the passage, whose body was twitching incessantly, moving in fits and starts like a puppet.

Jaeger's arms had been devoured by the infected. Even as they pounced on him, tearing at his flesh, he didn't forget to remove his brass arm guards and knuckle dusters. He wanted to prevent himself from losing his humanity and becoming a bloodthirsty monster who might blow Valery's head off.

Jaeger had already blown the head off one of his good buddies; he didn't want to blow the head off another one.

This creates a stark contrast between Jaeger and Montagnier.

Even if it means death, a soldier or policeman will take another person down with him to hell.

A military policeman would rather die than implicate those who are still alive.

Not everyone is like Montagnier, nor is everyone like Jaeger.

Valery longed to light a cigarette, but unfortunately he had none on him; tobacco, an item that could alleviate fear, had been used up on the very first day of the disaster.

Even if he did, what could he do with just one arm? He couldn't even light a match.

"The farther away from here the better... Zoya."

Valery loosened his wrists, lifted the battering ram, which was several times heavier than usual, and carried it on his shoulder, his eyes blazing, ready to die.

Even if we can't defeat this Frankenstein's monster, he can still drag a few infected people down with him to their deaths; every one less infected person is a bonus.

The fewer monsters there are in this abandoned city, the higher Zoya's survival rate will be.

"Boom—! Boom—!"

A muffled, heavy sound came from afar. Valery suspected that he had lost too much blood and was bloating his ears, causing him to hallucinate.

But the sound grew closer and louder, like the heartbeat of some enormous creature, pounding violently.

"This is……"

Valery shook his dazed head and noticed that the eyes of the infected and the stitched monster were both looking in the same direction.

That was the source of the sound, and also a bright beam of light that pierced through the darkness.
