"I believe you have already received the official statement regarding the events at Stark Industries last night," Major Rhodes said, his voice steady and firm, attempting to calm the tense atmosphere.
"Witnesses claim that robots were fighting on the streets of Los Angeles, causing a great deal of chaos and panic."
"In fact, this is a malfunction in Stark Industries' latest intelligent system."
"Fortunately, Supergirl and the Hulk arrived at the scene and prevented the disaster from happening, minimizing the damage."
Tony Stark sat backstage, watching Rhodes spouting nonsense on TV, a mischievous smile creeping onto his lips.
He glanced at the newspaper in his hand; the headline on the front page read, "Who is Iron Man?"
“Look at that name, Iron Man, sounds good,” Tony muttered to himself. “But it’s not quite accurate. This thing is made of gold-titanium alloy. Iron Man, that’s a bit strange. But as a name, it’s not bad.”
He raised his eyebrows, indicating he was fairly satisfied with the headline in the newspaper.
Then, he took out his phone and started scrolling through online comments.
“Hey, take another look at the comments on this website: Supergirl and the Hulk beat up the terrorists, upholding justice and maintaining social order.” Tony frowned, expressing his dissatisfaction at being portrayed as the villain.
In fact, Tony felt he had done a pretty good job. If it weren't for the insufficient power of the original miniature arc reactor, the Engineering Heavy Duty External Parts Pack MK3 could have easily dismantled that piece of junk into eight pieces!
Pepper was touching up his makeup, and she gave the boy, who never seemed to grow up, a look of amusement.
"Here's your speech. Just read it." Coulson walked over and handed Tony a piece of paper.
“Okay.” Tony reluctantly accepted it. Covering up the truth is a common practice to prevent the social impact of the incident from spreading.
"You were on the yacht at the time, and you spent one night with Pepper on Avalon Island in the English Channel. There are more than fifty tourists who can testify for you," Coulson repeated the contents of the paper expressionlessly.
Last night, the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents brought along for the mission were utterly useless, easily defeated by the Iron Monger.
Afterwards, Coulson also had to clean up the mess left by several "superheroes" who had gotten into a fight.
Destroying the body and covering up the truth, after a whole night of work, no one could be happy.
"Okay, is that really okay? I mean, Stanislavski isn't mentioned here." Tony flipped through the speech, not seeing the familiar name, and asked in confusion.
Obadiah is Stark Industries' second-largest shareholder after himself, holding a 25% stake, and enjoys immense influence in both the financial and media worlds.
Even though he has turned to ashes, isn't it a bit disrespectful to not even mention him?
“We’ve taken care of it. Obadiah is on vacation. Small aircraft have always had a high failure rate.”
"It's no challenge for S.H.I.E.L.D. to make such people disappear without a trace," Coulson said meaningfully.
"Hmm, it sounds like a scripted scenario. Even though we solved the problem, we're hiding it and making up this easily refuted lie."
Tony said somewhat irritably. He wasn't one to like to keep a low profile, and it would be a real shame if he couldn't live a life of dazzling brilliance.
“Mr. Stark, this is not my priority.”
“The image of Supergirl and Hulk has been deeply ingrained in people’s minds since the New York incident, but you haven’t.”
“We don’t want to hear any more speculation and confusion. You just need to read from the script, and things will calm down,” Coulson explained carefully.
The emergence of superheroes can bring joy to many people, but it can also plunge many into fear of the unknown and uncontrollable.
S.H.I.E.L.D. wants social stability, especially since someone with Tony Stark's flamboyant personality could cause trouble and disrupt social stability.
Tony's lips twitched, and he turned his head to the side unhappily. Sometimes, being in the limelight is very important to a man.
"You'll be on the court in a minute and a half. I hope you're ready," Coulson reminded him.
Inside the meeting room, Major Rhodes had already finished reading what he was supposed to say.
He was woken up early in the morning by Tony's barrage of calls, and before he even opened his eyes, he boarded Stark Industries' private jet.
I've been memorizing scripts the whole way from south to north, and now I'm suffering from neurasthenia.
“Mr. Stark will now make a statement from the scene. He will not answer any questions from reporters. Thank you for your understanding,” Rhodes announced.
Tony walked onto the stage looking all high and mighty, glanced at Lu Yunmeng sitting in the press section, and winked.
There were no interviews or statements scheduled for Supergirl today. As a superhero who has always upheld justice and eliminated crime, Ruth Bader doesn't need to say anything to the media; the public's voice and support are the best explanation.
She's only here today to go through the motions, to support Tony, and she really wants to see that iconic scene.
However, Lu Yunmeng seemed to spot a familiar figure in the press section.
Dr. Banner, another party involved, was not even present.
Hulk himself has many problems and is not suitable to appear in front of the public media.
You're bringing a hot-tempered, explosive guy to a press conference? Are you kidding me?
It goes without saying that, given Hulk's temperament, he would never honestly answer the reporter's questions, and Dr. Banner would be even less able to justify his own explanation.
Just imagine, and you'll know that the next day there will definitely be a ton of reports about the Hulk being an enemy of all humanity.
"Okay, I remember the last press conference was... something from before..."
Tony looked at the large group of reporters below the stage, but couldn't speak freely. Feeling somewhat frustrated, he tried to find something to say.
"Forget it, I'll just read from the script." Tony gave up.
Most of the reporters present responded with relatively good-natured laughter.
Most of them knew what kind of person Tony Stark was.
Playboy, genius inventor, billionaire, philanthropist—these titles undoubtedly represent a form of social recognition.
The reporters were well aware of Tony's unconventional personality. If they had all those titles, they could do the same.
"Excuse me, Mr. Stark, do you really think we'll buy into your act?" A female reporter in the audience suddenly interrupted.
Tony looked at the woman and thought she seemed familiar, but he couldn't quite place her.
"In fact, the vast majority of the reporters sitting here are here to listen to you read your script."
"It's like official statements, or the scraps of paper left behind after wiping your butt."
The female reporter's words were sharp and undisguisedly targeted, leaving Tony completely bewildered. He even began to suspect that he hadn't paid for the things he bought.
"To be honest, I'm not personally interested in your experiences. If I could, I'd rather interview Supergirl," the female reporter continued.
Lu Yunmeng, who was sitting in the last row, felt a twitch in her eyelids, sensing that this person had ill intentions.
"If you want to interview Superwoman, find a place that's on fire or a shop that's been robbed at gunpoint; maybe you'll run into her there."
"Do you need me to call her over for you? By the way, I have Supergirl's number." Tony wasn't going to take this lying down, and he grinned and teased.
He is generally not very polite, but he is quite polite to women.
But this female reporter started dragging his friend into the conversation right away, so let's not have a shouting match!
“Oh no, Mr. Stark, you don’t need to flaunt how well you know Superwoman. Strictly speaking, I’ve known her longer than you have,” the female reporter said, shaking her head with a half-smile.
Tony was stunned. He suddenly remembered that Lu Yunmeng used to be a reporter. Although she was a freelance writer, she would inevitably know some colleagues.
He instantly understood what the female reporter wanted to do.
He quickly gave Rhodes a wink. This wasn't the right occasion to expose Supergirl. Even though everyone had seen videos of Lulu flying around online, her face was relatively blurry.
Rod immediately understood and prepared to step forward to end the press conference. However, before he could even speak, he was interrupted loudly by the female reporter again.
"This Superwoman is also here today. As one of the people involved in last night's Stark Industries incident, I'd like to interview you, is that alright?"
The female reporter stood up, turned her head to look in Lu Yunmeng's direction, gave her a flirtatious wink, and said teasingly.
Lu Yunmeng slapped herself on the forehead. Holy crap, what a coincidence! She never expected that anyone here would recognize her.
She remembered: Christine Everhart, a Brown University alumna from the original body, a year ahead of her, making her her senior, and currently working at Vanity Fair magazine as a very accomplished journalist.
"Lu, are you pretending not to know me? We haven't seen each other in ages," the female reporter said with a smile as she stepped forward.
"Long time no see, Christine," Lu Yunmeng sighed, stood up, and said.
As soon as she finished speaking, the whole place erupted in chaos!
The reporters, who had originally planned to just make a brief appearance and listen to Tony's boasting, suddenly became excited and rushed over, with so many microphones that they couldn't squeeze in!
Supergirl, the epitome of a superhero, single-handedly fought against tens of thousands of troops during the Manhattan Massacre, saving all civilians without a single casualty or death.
The unimaginable speed, the overwhelming power, the red heat vision that can melt steel, and that iconic blue bodysuit and red cape—it all feels like it stepped right out of a comic book. How could it not be exciting?
Seeing this scene, Tony was jealous. He said he regretted letting Lu Yunmeng come to the event, since he was the one who should have been the focus.
There aren't any reporters at the scene looking at him; it's as if he didn't come at all.
However, Tony wasn't jealous; instead, he was considering whether to make the press conference more sensational.
Now that Supergirl's identity has been exposed, why not be even more dazzling?
“Tony, you didn’t tell me Supergirl would be here,” Rhodes said in a low voice, sounding quite helpless.
"What do we do now? Just let those reporters ask questions?"
“Why not? Lu used to be a reporter, she knows which questions to answer and which not to answer,” Tony said, shrugging and winking.
"They're way more professional than us!"
Chapter 33 I am Iron Man
Lu Yunmeng was dressed casually today, in a white shirt, jeans, and slippers, and her hair was a mess.
Unlike her usual imposing and heroic image, she appeared unusually languid today.
After all, I slept until the afternoon, and Pepper called me over as soon as I got up.
Looking at the flashes of cameras and video recorders all around her, she gave an awkward but polite smile—good heavens, she'd been caught red-handed!
Lu Yunmeng never liked dressing up, and her manly soul wouldn't allow her to do something so incongruous.
Moreover, her strong physical attributes and genetic advantages make her naturally beautiful, without a single flaw.
Even if someone wanted to deliberately vilify her, it would be difficult to do so.
Even with this unkempt appearance, she exudes a beauty that is hard to look away from.
The original owner of this body was a reporter and used sharp, merciless language during interviews.
Now, when she's in front of other people's cameras and microphones, she shows no discomfort whatsoever; she remains calm and composed, her elegance timeless.
“Lu, we haven’t seen each other since graduation. I heard you went to Afghanistan as a freedom war correspondent,” Christine said with a smile, getting closer to him.
The original owner of this body had indeed met this cheap senior a few times, but they weren't exactly familiar with each other; at most, they were acquaintances.
