These five people are film students at a university in Boston. They went to the Miskatole Film Festival for two reasons: first, to experience the atmosphere of the film festival as part of their off-campus practice; and second, to make a film.
They want to make a film about a film festival, and try to participate in the Student Film Festival the following year. If they can get a nomination or something, they'll make a fortune.
"Films related to the film festival?"
Lu Ban felt that the sound was somewhat familiar.
Chapter 765 College Student Film
"Yes, Director Lu Ban, our film is about a group of college students who are going to a remote town to shoot a horror film about local folklore. However, they encounter a terrifying event and disappear. Years later, another group of people find their videotapes."
The tallest boy in the car explained that he was in charge of driving, and his driving skills were quite good for his age. The surrounding scenery rushed past, leaving everyone breathless.
New England experiences cold, damp winters. Due to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, the air is often filled with the damp smell of the sea when it's not sunny. In some extreme cases, dense fog can also blanket the area, obscuring visibility. Driving in this wilderness requires extreme caution.
The scenery on both sides of the road is monotonous and dull, with the occasional oddly shaped rock being the most noteworthy sight.
The RV was quite spacious and could sleep six people. After driving out of the airport, Lu Ban got to know these college students briefly along the way.
The driver was the organizer of this trip, named James. He also rented the RV here. His family seemed to be quite wealthy, and he spoke and acted with great generosity.
His girlfriend, the blonde Valerie, was studying film art and had a hot figure. She was sitting in the passenger seat playing on her phone.
The boy wearing glasses is Wes. He seems to know everything and gets along well with everyone.
The volleyball player-like boy mentioned earlier is Scott. He is taciturn, as if he is always thinking, and his occasional words are concise and to the point.
The brown-haired girl was named Talia. She was warm and cheerful, holding a can of beer in her hand, indicating that drinking during the day was a regular occurrence for her.
"To be honest, Director Lu Ban, I referenced 'The Mouth of a Madman' when I was creating this story. I feel that the story that interweaves reality and illusion can make the audience feel more involved! This pseudo-documentary format is also quite interesting."
James said as he drove.
"Did you write this script?"
Lu Ban asked.
“No, I just had the idea. Scott is the one who actually writes the script; he’s very good at these things.”
When his name was called, the boy gave a shy smile.
"Director Lu Ban, do you have any thoughts on our script?"
The brown-haired woman, Talia, asked a question. She was sitting next to Lu Ban, and as she spoke, she leaned closer, her arm touching Lu Ban's sleeve.
“It’s good that low-budget films use unique narratives. Perhaps you could try recording your current journey as well, which would add more realism.”
Lu Ban said a few words briefly.
Upon hearing Lu Ban's words, the group suddenly realized something. Scott immediately got up and rummaged through the swaying RV for filming equipment. He quickly found a camera, turned it on, and started filming.
"Um, Director Lu Ban, if you don't mind, could we include you in the movie?"
"I can't believe it," asked Wes, the boy with glasses.
"Of course, but I'm just a cameo role; you guys are the real protagonists of the movie."
Lu Ban smiled.
The drive from the airport to Miskatonic takes a day and a night. In the evening, after eating a quick pizza, the sun set and it became completely dark.
"It's getting foggy."
Sitting in his chair with a glass of juice in his hand, James said that Wes was driving now. The three boys would take turns driving. They couldn't drink alcohol. Wes' driving skills were slightly inferior to James', so his speed was naturally much slower.
Lu Ban looked out the window. The desolate world was shrouded in a thick fog, and the white fog reminded him of the forest in the Kingdom of Night.
"Will it be this foggy tonight? Turn on the lights, I don't want to run into any drunks on the way."
James called out. They occasionally encountered oncoming cars along the way, but very few were heading towards Miskatonic. This was normal; if they didn't start at the same time, cars going in the same direction would maintain roughly the same distance, like in a rally, and would never meet.
However, such dense fog is rare even in New England. Talia opened the car window, and a gust of wind blew in, cool and refreshing, carrying the damp, fishy smell of the sea or lake.
"Turn it off, it's too cold."
Valery said something, but Talia didn't do it.
"It feels nice to have a breeze, doesn't it?"
She took another sip of the beer from the can, probably because her body was warm after drinking, which is why she wanted to get some fresh air.
"I said turn it off, I don't want to catch a cold tonight."
Valerie emphasized this point, and was about to stand up to forcefully close the window for the other person.
"Let's turn it off; the heating is on."
Scott smoothed things over, offering some words of advice, and Talia reluctantly closed the window and went back inside.
It seems their relationship isn't as good as one might imagine.
Lu Ban thought to himself.
He wasn't particularly interested in the awkward relationship between college students; he just wanted to get to Miskatonic as soon as possible to check on Feng Yu's situation.
But after driving for a while, the car suddenly slowed down again.
"Damn it, is there not enough engine oil?"
Weiss cursed and checked the instruments, but couldn't figure it out.
"what happened?"
James asked.
"I don't know. There's no response when I press the accelerator. I guess the tank should be full of gas?"
Weiss countered with a question.
"Of course, didn't we both watch the addition together?"
James went to the passenger seat and took a look around.
"There seems to be a town ahead. Let's stop and check it out there."
He looked around for a while but didn't find anything amiss. However, he did notice the lights shining through the white fog ahead, and then he spoke.
The RV quickly came to a stop, and Lu Ban looked out the window. This was not a small town, but rather a few houses.
It looked like the house of a nearby farmer. A fog light was very conspicuous in the foggy weather. As for the house, only the first floor was lit with dim light, which was a bit eerie.
"I don't feel well, we shouldn't get off the bus."
Valerie looked rather unwell, she said.
What are you afraid of?
Talia scoffed dismissively. She opened the car door, stepped out, and was quickly enveloped in fog, leaving only a hazy silhouette.
Wes and James also got out of the car. They checked the engine and transmission and quickly found the problem.
"There really was no engine oil left. How come we didn't notice this problem?"
James was incredulous. He went back to his car and searched for it, but found no spare engine oil.
"That damn leasing company, I should have known better."
He muttered curses and turned his gaze to the room in front of him.
"Let's go ask that family if they can get us some engine oil."
Chapter 766 Don't Stop the Camera
This house is a typical three-story house in Massachusetts. The first floor has a large living room and kitchen, a yard, the second floor has bedrooms, and the third floor has an attic. Such houses usually also have a garage full of tools, and there may be a rather secluded basement nearby.
In such a sparsely populated country, many people are influenced by apocalyptic movies and usually build a shelter in their own houses so that they can survive underground for a while even if zombies attack.
James and Wes arrived at the door of the house. Instead of knocking, they called out twice first.
At night, in the thick fog, beside the desolate highway, those who dare to live here must have some skill. In this country where it is legal to own guns, knocking on someone's door rashly could very well lead to misfortune.
Lu Ban also got out of the car. Through the Reality Vision, he could see two people walking in the fog. Their shouts echoed in the empty world, but the owner of the house did not respond.
Hello, is anyone there?
James called out twice more, but there was clearly no response.
Wes took off his glasses, rubbed his eyes, and felt a discomfort in his eyes from the fog that made his clothes damp. He put his glasses back on and went to the door of the house. He knocked on the door.
Hello, is anyone home?
Wes tried pushing the door.
Surprisingly, the door was not closed.
"Hey, the door isn't closed."
As he spoke, Wes pushed open the door and walked into the room.
"I don't think this is a good idea."
James tried to persuade him, but Wes had already gone inside.
"No one lives here?"
Stepping out of the fog and into the lamplight, a slightly tipsy Talia peered into the room.
"They may have gone out but didn't lock the door, which is a real oversight."
Wes said sarcastically as he walked into the foyer. It did look like someone lived there; there wasn't much dust on the table or coffee table, and the living room lights were dim, as if they might go out at any moment.
He glanced into the kitchen and saw that there were still vegetables, ham, and cheese that hadn't been processed yet. Wes naturally picked up a slice of ham, stuffed it into his mouth, and began to chew it heartily.
"We shouldn't have come in."
James followed him in, and upon seeing Wes's behavior, he immediately spoke up to stop him.
In other countries, if you break in and are caught by the homeowner, they can shoot you on the spot without you facing any legal consequences. James doesn't want to lose his life just for making a movie.
What are you filming?
Turning around, James saw Scott following him with a camera.
"I want to leave a record of this, uh, isn't this state quite interesting?"
