The guard Matt came to Kevin's side and handed a simple letter to his young master.
"A letter? Was it just delivered? Who delivered it?"
"A lady."
Kevin lost interest in opening the letters. There were quite a few ladies among the nobility who considered themselves literary; their love poems, excluding those clearly meant to be offensive, could fill the entire script of *Cecilice's Love Poems* (a currently popular love opera). Love letters from completely unrelated people were somehow presented with context, some even retaining the same names.
"I'll watch the latest episode when I get back; I'm getting a bit tired of it." Kevin glanced at the message; there was no recipient. "Another careless girl. Let me guess, Matt, did that person forget to tell you to pass it on to Mr. Kevin?"
"Yes."
So who is the recipient of the letter? The dashing Reduin? Or the passionate and fiery Val? (Both are characters in the opera)
"neither."
Who is that?
"The recipient is Lyle. Mr. Lyle Bouler."
Kevin's spoon fell into the broth, and the splattered grease landed on the butler's shirt.
"Lyle? Lyle! Lyle!!! A letter for Lyle!!!"
Matt nodded, ignoring the young master's fuss.
"Yes, it's a letter to your good friend Mr. Lyle, sent by Ms. Karen Pombay."
"That's Lyle's paladin sidekick!!!" Paladin + Lyle = Adventure!
Kevin, waving his arms and legs, rushed outside with the letter in hand.
"Let's go! Matt! Get the horses ready! We're going to find Lyle!"
The guard, Matt, replied indifferently.
“Mr. Lyle is no longer in Cassandale. How will you find him? The paladin lady has probably already searched for him as well. Neither Lyle nor Mr. Ralph are here, so I can only give you this letter.”
“Matt! Lyle is my brother! Are you underestimating our bond? Sincerity can move mountains! I'll search for a month, a year! Even if I die out there, I will never let Lyle down!”
"Butler! Tell the old man I'm off to take care of some important business!"
Chapter 446 The Ignorant Young Master
A furtive figure lurked in the shadows of the dilapidated hut, cutting something on the only wooden table.
Perhaps the feeling of being furtive was just Matt's imagination. His young master Kevin, after openly pushing open the wooden door of his friend Mr. Lyle, immediately began inspecting every detail of the house, and was now intently examining the wormholes on the wooden planks, seemingly trying to connect them with some kind of magical pattern.
“Young Master Kevin, cherish Mr. Lyle’s food.” Matt gripped his longsword and sliced the half-eaten black bread. This was the first thing Kevin had found after rummaging through his belongings. Based on his so-called intuition, he believed there was something inside the black bread.
Kevin's gaze remained fixed on the patterns on the wall. He stretched out his palm, revealing a metal key.
“This is the key to the Lyle house. It was originally my trunk key, so I have a copy. When I came in before, I didn’t unlock it. Do you know what that means? When Lyle left, he took all his treasured things with him. If a thief can touch them, then of course I can too.”
“Young Master Kevin, have you considered that the lock you gave me is probably made of brass? Are you sure Mr. Lyle will use it to lock the door instead of keeping it as a valuable item? I look around, and the things in this house combined are probably not as valuable as the lock you gave me.”
"..." Kevin's time seemed to stop for a second. He stiffly turned his head and stared at his guard, feeling defeated. "Have you found any information? I have a feeling that the remaining half of the black bread is the key."
"I'm very sorry, there's only sawdust in here besides bread."
"Sawdust? Why would there be sawdust in bread?"
"To fill their stomachs, adding sawdust can increase the feeling of fullness."
Kevin felt a little ashamed under Matt's gaze, which seemed to say, "Aren't you friends? How come you don't even know this?"
Kevin took a step back, a hint of sadness in his eyes. "Lyle has a strong sense of pride; he rarely accepts my help. Out of respect for him, I haven't inquired about his diet or living conditions..."
Kevin's expression was a bit grim. "Fortunately, he now has a wealthy partner and shouldn't have to endure these things anymore."
"Matt, is this what the poor people of Cassandra eat?" The carefree young nobleman finally realized the difference between people.
"Yes, most of them, some can't even eat this."
"……what can I do?"
“You can’t do that. The residents of Cassandale are not the subjects of the Borei family, and the power to govern the people is not in your hands. This city is controlled by the royal family and the church, and they have established the rule that the commoners grovel in the mud while looking up to the nobles. Don’t make any unnecessary moves, young master Kevin, you will provoke the fragile nerves of the other powerful people.”
"I understand……"
"Your family has done more than enough. To us servants, at least at Bory Manor, we don't get to taste these things. In fact, they've been too good to us. If it weren't for your own good fortune, it would be beyond my expectations for such a philanthropic noble family to grow so powerful. This is probably why the Baron indulges you; you can be capricious if you have the ability."
"Is that so? It seems I'm not such a naive and useless young master after all."
“Young Master Kevin, you don’t need to know about black bread, because it won’t appear anywhere in Borui Manor. If one day your territory and your subjects receive the same treatment as the manor, then black bread will only become something to add flair to life in novels. It’s useless knowledge that you don’t need to know at all.”
A slightly dejected Kevin quickly rallied, a trait perhaps characteristic of his—like sunlight, warm and radiant. "You're right, Matt, it's not my fault I didn't know about black bread! Because I'll make sure everyone stops eating black bread! I need the power to govern my people, I need lands and people! I… my lands in Hamletshire, I think, haven't been sold yet…" Though there were probably hardly any survivors there.
"Alright! Our goal is to find Lyle! And then have Lyle help me select my subjects! I want to rule over interesting people!" Kevin, full of enthusiasm, rushed out of the house and shouted to the sky.
"Let's go, Matt, let's head out to find Lyle!"
"But didn't we just arrive at Mr. Lyle's house?"
"There's nothing much to see here! I've thought of a better place!"
“A better place?” Matt put down his sword and looked at the table of black bread slices. “Young Master Kevin, then I’ll get rid of these black bread slices.” Matt’s intention was to discard them.
"Okay, then let's take it with us on the road. I'm actually quite curious about what black bread tastes like!"
"Yes……"
The night was deep.
Baron Borye navigated the social circles of the nobility, constantly complaining about his troublesome son. Kevin's unconventionality had become legendary in aristocratic circles, especially after he became Earl Hamlet and led the Borye family to prosperity. Everyone greeted him with smiles, and no one spoke ill of Kevin. That, too, could be considered a kind of ability.
As for this legendary count, who is admired by all, he was holding a bowl of hot soup, eating black bread with his loyal guards, and accompanied by dozens of "old men and women".
With his Adam's apple bobbing and swallowing with difficulty, Kevin complained about the unpalatable texture of the black bread.
Matt wasn't in the mood to complain about his young master's reckless behavior, because he had something else he wanted to complain about.
"Is this the better place you were talking about? If I ever believe your nonsense again, I'll punish myself by eating black bread three times a day for a month."
This is Cassandale Cemetery.
The two squatted in the middle of the cemetery, the steam from the hot soup mingling with the chill of the cemetery, bringing a touch of life to the cemetery.
Kevin, however, continued eating his noodle soup as if nothing had happened.
“My brother Lyle is a necromancer, and this is definitely the most suitable place for him. Keep a close eye on things later. If any tomb moves, call me. This steam is affecting my eyesight.”
"Ah...it can still move!"
"Isn't that obvious? What kind of necromancer can't manipulate corpses? Let me tell you the truth. This is child's play for Lyle. His real strength lies in controlling much more powerful things."
The fear of death arose in the guard's heart, but loyalty still sustained his spirit.
Two hours later, the white moon in the sky turned blood red, and midnight had truly arrived.
There were no unusual phenomena, no noises. The only movement was between the two of them. Just as Matt breathed a sigh of relief, thinking that his young master's plan had failed...
Kevin pointed to the secluded path behind the cemetery, which was faintly visible.
"It seems we can't go outside, let's go inside and take a look."
Matt's legs trembled visibly.
"Matt, if you can't stand it, go back. This is a cemetery, nothing will happen. You know my abilities."
“Young Master Kevin’s abilities are more effective when there are people around. Besides, as a bodyguard, how could I… I should at least personally escort you to Mr. Lyle’s side.”
"Alright, let's go!"
Chapter 447 The Speechless Young Master
The number of tombstones is decreasing, and the temperature is also dropping.
The tangible fears have disappeared, but the intangible terrors are growing.
Kevin and Matt heard a faint sound, like invisible insects swaying their legs and crawling in their ears. A chill ran up their spines and turned into a shiver in their minds.
Even Kevin began to doubt whether he had given a bad idea.
Water droplets condensed on the grass that reached above my ankles, transferring to my boots and adding to the chill.
"Young...Young Master, I...I feel like something is watching us."
"That...that's pretty good, isn't it? It means...that our trip was worthwhile!"
After walking for a while, Matt stopped. He could hear footsteps, and Kevin, who was walking ahead, also stopped.
"Hey Matt, are you alright? Are you still in the back?" Kevin asked slowly, very slowly...
"Young Master! I'm alright! Don't turn around!" Matt shouted angrily, but his shrill tone revealed his agitation. The clanging of metal came from behind Kevin.
Matt is drawing his sword.
Kevin obediently didn't turn around. "Matt, Matt, are you alright? Are you okay? Is something wrong with you?"
"No, young master, the problem lies with your side." The guard, Matt, stared intently at his young master's back. A blurry, semi-transparent shadow, like a lover, was nestled on Kevin's back, its semi-transparent face overlapping Kevin's shoulder. A ghost had performed an intimate act that countless girls in Cassandra couldn't even dream of.
“Young Master Kevin, you have something on your back.”
The young master shuddered as if splashed with cold water, took a step forward, and regained his footing.
It was nothing at first, but when Matt mentioned it, Kevin also felt something on his back, a hand that felt as soft as fur moving around on his back.
How blissful it is to be ignorant!
"What...what should we do?!"
Matt took a deep breath. "Young Master, don't move yet. I'll slowly approach. Once I get close, your ability will surely divert the ghost's attention to me. After I'm possessed, you should run away quickly."
"Matt! Are you out of your mind?!" Kevin was lucky, which was probably why the ghost hadn't attacked yet. But Matt was just an ordinary person, and if he got close to Kevin, he would revert to being just another unlucky guy. His fate was obvious.
"Of course I'd rather die! But the young master's life is a thousand times more precious than mine. Please let me fulfill my knightly oath!" Bearing the weight of righteousness, Matt raised his sword and charged forward.
His enemy, however, escaped.
To be precise, Kevin, carrying the ghost, slipped away.
