It took nearly twenty minutes for Ryan and the others to reach a corner of Earl Wilson's manor.
That's where Earl Wilson's estate intersects with the Jura Circle wall, along the way...
The manor walls, which were initially pristine white, gradually became covered in dust and eventually grew overgrown with weeds, looking utterly desolate.
Ryan's underlings exchanged glances. The wall wasn't very high, only reaching their shoulders. Above that was a metal railing, through which they could see the residence of Carly, the guide for the vagrants supported by the wasteland's nobles.
It was a tiny, dilapidated wooden hut, surrounded by all sorts of junk and clutter. There wasn't even a servant in sight, and Carly, whom they were looking for, was there pushing a very old-looking sofa.
Ryan fell silent.
Although the servant spoke dismissively about Carly living in a corner of the manor, Carly was now considered useful by Earl Wilson and Nemo. Nemo had even personally intervened to help Carly out of a predicament. It was impossible for her to live the life of a vagrant as before.
Even if they seem to be living the life of a homeless person, it's just to maintain their persona; in reality, they're being well taken care of.
Ryan wanted to make that judgment, but the marks around the cabin and Carly's current behavior didn't seem like she was being secretly fed and cared for.
This is Earl Wilson's manor. The residents of Triassic don't come near it. Carly's friends stayed at the shop to prevent them from vandalizing it, so Carly couldn't have known he was coming.
Carly wouldn't put on a show for thin air.
Chapter Ninety-Three: Perhaps, he wished for us all to die.
For a moment, Ryan felt incredibly stupid that a little girl like Carly was playing such an important role.
"Boss, what's wrong with us..."
The henchman following behind Ryan also noticed Carly's predicament and couldn't help but ask tentatively.
They didn't know what Carly had that would make them travel all this way to be humiliated by Earl Wilson's servants and go through all this trouble, but they were certain that Carly, who was moving the old sofa, didn't have anything Ryan wanted.
Ryan took a deep breath and stepped forward, calling out to Carly through the wall and iron railing.
"Hey—Carly—"
Carly, who was pushing the old sofa, paused and turned her head. When she saw that the person who greeted her was Ryan, her brows furrowed slightly.
Noticing Carly's movements, Ryan let out a soft breath, trying his best to make his expression appear natural.
"Carly, there's something I want to tell you?"
Carly looked around, wiped her hands, and took small steps to the wall. She picked up a box, stood on it, and looked at Ryan standing outside through the overgrown wall and iron railing.
"What's the matter?"
Ryan stared into Carly's eyes, his own eyes narrowing slightly. "I've received information that the Jurassic Circle's gangs are planning to smuggle weapons in the Triassic Circle, and most of those goods are probably already in Earl Wilson's hands."
“I know,” Carly tilted her head to the right, “I’ve already seen those goods.”
Ryan was taken aback. He had expected Carly to have seen the goods from the Jurassic Circle, but he hadn't expected her to admit it so readily.
Despite the surprise, Ryan breathed a sigh of relief. Carly had actually revealed such important information so honestly. She was even less wary than he had imagined. Considering the behavior of Carly's friends, Ryan looked at Carly with a hint of contempt.
“Carly, I’m very grateful that you’ve stood up for us homeless people in the Triassic Circle,” Ryan said, gripping the iron railing with both hands and leaning forward slightly. “But as you can see, the conflict between the homeless and the Triassic Circle residents has been brought into the open, and those residents are watching us like we’re thieves.”
"Yeah?"
“You live here, so you don’t know. We were just passing by a shop when the owner came out with a cleaver and chased us away,” Ryan shook his head helplessly, and his underlings behind him nodded in agreement.
"If you don't believe me, you can ask around. This happened just yesterday, and many people know about it."
This statement is half true and half false.
There were indeed instances where shop owners rushed out with kitchen knives because a homeless person was passing by, but the homeless person passing by was not one of them.
"Is anyone injured?" Carly glanced at the henchmen behind Ryan, her gaze lingering on the one with blood still on his mouth and a flattened nose. "This doesn't look like it was done with a kitchen knife."
“The homeless in the Triple Circle don’t just get threatened with kitchen knives,” Ryan sighed. “Carly, haven’t you experienced being punched and kicked?”
"so?"
“If things continue like this, the situation of the homeless will only get worse and worse. But they only have some controlled knives, and only one or two people have guns. But at this time, the gangs in the Jurassic Circle plan to sell arms in the Triassic Circle. Earl Wilson can stop them once, but he can’t stop them every time.”
Ryan lowered his voice, but no longer concealed his purpose.
“Once the gun trade begins, most of the residents of the San Die Quan area will have a gun. Carly, have you ever thought about how terrifying that would be? If they act impulsively or refuse, we homeless people who are powerless and have no human rights will die!”
"No one will stand up for us."
“What are you talking about? Aren’t Knight Nemo and Earl Wilson standing up for us?” Carly frowned.
Ryan's expression froze. He really wanted to grab Carly's hair, point at the dilapidated wooden house surrounded by junk in the distance, and yell, "Mind your own business!"
Is this what you call upholding justice? You don't even live in a better place than me!
But this is something that can only be thought about.
“Carly, once someone's dead, they're dead. We were shot dead. Their 'justice' is just hindsight,” Ryan took a deep breath and leaned closer to the railing. “They're only after their own reputation. They don't care about our lives, maybe…”
“They want all of us homeless people to die.”
"This way they can play the role of partners in justice without paying any cost."
Ryan was trying hard to subtly suggest to Carly that she might fall into his trap.
“You mean…” Carly blinked.
“Carly, help us steal a few guns,” Ryan said, his face almost pressed against the railing, his eyes fixed on Carly. “Count Wilson is only temporarily holding onto this batch of weapons.”
“The Jurassic Circle gangs and the Wasteland royal family are at odds. They can’t just stand by and watch Earl Wilson seize this shipment of weapons. Earl Wilson and his men are probably negotiating with the Jurassic Circle gangs right now. They don’t have time to inventory this shipment.”
"I don't want to make things difficult for you. Two guns, just two guns are enough."
Ryan held up two fingers, his expression extremely serious.
"With such a large batch of weapons, they wouldn't even notice if two guns were missing."
"What do you want to do with these two guns?" Carly leaned back.
“Of course it’s for self-defense! I only need two guns, no bullets,” Ryan shook his head. “We just want to scare the Triassic residents with empty guns when they draw their weapons, so they won’t fire so easily.”
"That's all?"
"That's all!"
“This…” Carly’s eyes flickered before she nodded. “Okay, if it’s two guns.”
After saying that, Carly jumped off the box and turned to leave.
Once Carly was out of sight, Ryan's henchman stepped forward and asked, "Boss, is it really just two empty guns?"
“Nonsense—two isn’t enough,” Ryan sneered.
"Then this..."
“Stupid—we couldn’t do anything before, but now we’ve got this brat’s weakness on us!” Ryan turned his head and said quietly, “I told you, if you want to do well, you have to know who you can be mean to and who you should wag your tail with.”
“Carly is the dog that Earl Wilson and Nemo chose, and now this dog has secretly taken what belongs to them without their permission.”
"hehe--"
"The petty wasteland nobleman had his things stolen by a vagrant in the San Die Quan circle."
“This isn’t something that can be settled with a beating,” Ryan chuckled softly, looking down. “If she’s stupid enough, we can use her to help us steal the weapons. If she figures out…”
“Then let’s lay it all out. Anyway… we’re just a bunch of penniless vagrants. Big shots like Earl Wilson and Nemo wouldn’t remember what we look like.”
Chapter Ninety-Four: Empty Guns and Revolvers
The servants serving Earl Wilson all came from the capital, Millennium. Although they were only servants, they were born in the capital, Millennium, and they never bowed their heads even when facing merchants from the White Circle.
But this doesn't mean they are a bunch of ignorant fools; they are ultimately just servants, serving the highest-ranking royal family and nobles in the wasteland.
Royal families and nobles do not dislike servants who are clever, because clever servants are good at flattery. However, royal families and nobles dislike servants who use their cleverness in other ways, including but not limited to making decisions for their masters as servants.
The royal families and nobles of the wasteland are extremely sensitive to their self-esteem and value their class above all else. Making decisions for them, whether right or wrong, is seen as a provocation, as if it were an insult to their intelligence and that of servants.
If we guess wrong, then we'll be jeopardizing their cause.
If they guess right, that's even more terrifying; if they guess wrong, they'll just be abandoned. But if they guess right, the royal family and nobles will be furious. As the most noble people in the wasteland, they've had their thoughts guessed by a mere servant.
Therefore, even if it's a small matter, as long as it concerns one's master, one must report it; there's no harm in doing so.
The servants brought to the three-tiered circle were all seasoned veterans who had been carefully selected.
They looked down on Carly, the homeless woman from the Triple Circle, but they all knew that Nemo, Earl Wilson's nephew, was particularly interested in her. So they wouldn't openly despise Carly, nor would they respect her, since Carly was merely a tool for Nemo to achieve his goals, and a disposable one at that.
“Carly…Miss, where are you going? You should be staying in your cabin at this time.”
The servants who noticed Carly leaving Nemo's designated living space quickly blocked her way and glanced in the direction Carly was facing. The manor's warehouse was there, and today, a batch of illicit and extremely dangerous goods had been hidden in that warehouse, coupled with the appearance of Ryan and the others.
The servant considered some unfavorable possibilities.
"You're not planning to steal things for those homeless people, are you?"
The servant thought he had guessed correctly.
The servant was surprised when Carly nodded quite readily.
"Yes."
The servant tilted his head, staring blankly at Carly for a while before reacting. His expression changed, and he raised his right hand, wanting to slap this ungrateful vagrant. This was supposed to be a manor in the Triple Circle, but the owner was Earl Wilson. The confiscated goods naturally belonged to Earl Wilson, and Carly actually intended to steal the property of a wasteland noble.
But after lifting it up, the attendant hesitated again.
No matter what, Carly is Nemo's tool. Even if she needs to be dealt with, it's not up to him, her servant, to do it.
"You wait here and watch her!"
After calling out to the others, the servant hurried toward the mansion in the center of the estate. He walked through a corridor lined with various artworks from different cultures and arrived at the hall. Nemo was sitting on the sofa, swirling his wine glass and staring at the campfire, seemingly lost in thought.
After a moment's hesitation, the attendant explained Carly's situation.
Nemo's right hand, which was swirling the wine glass, paused, and the bright red liquid inside nearly spilled.
"Really? Did you catch her in the act, or did she tell you on her own?"
The servant didn't know whether Carly had been caught red-handed or had spoken up voluntarily. Out of prejudice against the homeless people of the Triple Circle, he wanted to assert that he had caught her red-handed, since Carly didn't seem to be actively trying to tell them her purpose.
However, the attendant suppressed his contempt and cleared his mind.
"I stopped her and asked her what she wanted to do, and she explained the situation herself,"
“Then let her go,” Nemo nodded, continuing to leisurely swirl his wine glass.
The servant opened his mouth, but didn't ask any further questions. He bowed and left.
As a competent servant, he could tell that Nemo was satisfied. Although he didn't understand why Nemo was satisfied, it wasn't something he should care about.
