The reasons that cannot be disclosed, and the fact that only the Church of Steam and Steel suffered huge losses, together point to a field that ordinary people like them should not be involved in.
With the rampant plague and war, most residents breathed a sigh of relief and no longer had any complaints. Many even got up to leave the church.
The priest yawned deeply, said nothing more, and grabbed the slicked-back hair, heading back the way he came.
Li Yili, who was sitting on a bench near the corner, raised her eyebrows.
The priest's every move exuded an indifferent attitude, seemingly completely unconcerned that the steam and steel factory used by the Church of God to process the entire Triassic community's inhabitants was engulfed in a fire.
Perhaps it's because the real facilities are underground, or perhaps the residents of the Triassic Circle were just lowly soldiers, and the process of producing these lowly soldiers was already complete, so the processing plant is gone and that's that.
Perhaps, it's both.
Li Yili glanced around, immediately stood up, and pulled Rebecca and Aditi, who had long been unable to stay any longer, leaving behind the residents of the Triple Circle who still showed no intention of leaving the church.
After leaving the church, Li Yili immediately pulled Rebecca Aditi into the alley to the right of the Church of the God of Steam and Steel, slowly circling the church and stopping occasionally to wait.
After lingering for nearly twenty minutes, no one came out to meet them. Not only Rebecca, but even Aditi started to peek around, looking somewhat uneasy.
Li Yili raised her eyebrows, paused for a while, and then pulled Rebecca and Aditi to leave the alley.
As soon as we stepped out of the alley, a man wearing a cowboy hat leaning against the wall raised his hand and took off his still-burning cigarette. "You guys don't look like locals."
"What does this have to do with you?" Li Yili raised her eyes.
“What happens to you is none of my business. I’m just worried about the two ladies next to you,” the man in the cowboy hat said, patting the revolver on his thigh. “It’s dangerous for outsiders in the Triple Circle.”
"You wouldn't happen to be one of those so-called...dangerous people, would you?"
"Hey buddy, you have a good eye, don't you?"
The man in the cowboy hat smiled brightly, flicked his finger, and the cigarette butt fell to the ground. The revolver strapped to his thigh was already drawn, and the barrel was pressed against Li Yili's forehead. The man's smile turned cold in an instant. He turned to the side to block the view of others, and forcefully pushed Li Yili into the alley.
"I'm so sorry..."
Before the man could finish speaking, he felt his right hand go empty. A revolver, even more important than his youngest son, appeared in Li Yili's hand, and the cold barrel was pressed against his forehead.
"Excuse me, what did you just say?"
Li Yili tilted her head, her thumb gripping the safety of the revolver, and pressed down. With a crisp click, a bead of cold sweat trickled down the cowboy's forehead.
That was the sound of his son canceling his insurance.
“Cough—I’ve never heard of such a dangerous guy being sent in,” the cowboy’s eyes flashed, and he dropped his frivolous expression.
"If it wasn't dangerous, how could I have survived last night's chase?" Li Yili twisted her wrist, unloading the magazine from her revolver and pouring all the ammunition into her left palm.
“That’s true—” the cowboy shrugged. “Actually, I suggested revealing a little more information or doing more work, but our boss is being sickly cautious right now. He said, ‘I just need someone dangerous enough, or someone lucky enough to help me out.’ As a result, no one has survived the first night so far.”
The cowboy paused, looked at Rebecca and Aditi, scratched his face, and stretched out his hand with an embarrassed smile.
"Well... anyway, congratulations on passing the first test. Do you need to change your clothes before going to the temporary reception area?"
"Temporary reception area?"
Li Yili raised an eyebrow and slapped the empty revolver into the cowboy's hand.
“There’s nothing we can do. Even if we’re in the Triple Circle, we’re still under their noses,” the cowboy pointed to the sky. “We don’t have a real base. Sometimes we change locations three times a day. You’d better get used to it.”
"Indeed, he's cautious to the point of being sick. It seems he's suffered quite a few losses in the past."
Chapter Twenty-Six: This gun is called Dio, this hat is called The World.
Perhaps in an attempt to demonstrate his reliability, or perhaps to cover up the embarrassment of being decisively disarmed and killed by Li Yili and rebuild his image in front of Rebecca and Aditi, the cowboy kept chattering away about all sorts of things the whole way.
"I am Puss, Puss Butchard. As you can see, I'm a cowboy. Of course, I used to be the triad sheriff, fighting off thugs and rich bastards with my good friend Dio, protecting the rights of the poor in the triad. Oh—Miss, I heard your question. Dio is, of course, it is!"
Before Pus could draw his revolver, it was easily snatched away by Li Yili, which was also unloaded of all its bullets. Pus pulled down the brim of his cowboy hat with his left hand and shook his head in a pretentious manner.
"A cowboy only ever has one companion, and that is his gun, oh, and this hat, called the world."
“Then you’d better be careful with your partner next time,” Li Yili complained.
"Exactly, exactly, it was just snatched away so easily," Rebecca, who was already annoyed by Puss's blatant attempt to show off, immediately chimed in with a scathing critique.
"Cough... I, I just didn't use any force," Puss blushed and raised his voice to emphasize, "If I had used force, no one could have taken Dio from my hands!"
“No, no, no, you gripped it really hard, the gun was covered in your sweaty hands, it came out with a single pull,” Li Yili said, raising a finger and bending it towards Puss, “It was just like a novice pointing a gun at a living person for the first time.”
Puss's hand trembled, and his good friend Dio almost flew out.
"What are you saying! I'm a cowboy!"
“Mr. Cowboy, are you too nervous? Haven’t we arrived yet? We’ve already circled the same spot more than three times,” Li Yili reminded him politely with a smile.
"Of course I know, be careful, don't you understand!" Puss vigorously wiped Dio's gunstock, stuffed Dio into the inner pocket of his clothes, since the bullets had been unloaded, so he didn't have to worry about accidentally firing it and opening a hole for himself.
Li Yili shrugged, not wanting to spoil the mood of this prideful cowboy any further.
However, after being interrupted and exposed by Li Yili, Pusi lost his confidence and wanted to continue showing off. He covered his head and walked around a few more times before leading Li Yili to a diagonal alley where the shops were no more than five meters apart.
"You are lucky. Usually, this place is so crowded it's like my grandfather's intestines after he's been constipated for three days."
Puss adjusted his cowboy hat, looked around, and then stood in front of a shop window displaying this outdated dress store. He nodded to Li Yili, pushed open the door of the store with his right hand, and walked in sideways.
Li Yili raised an eyebrow, held onto the door, and followed Puss into the outdated clothing store, which was out of style inside and out. The refreshing smell that greeted her surprised Li Yili. "I thought it would smell musty."
"Because I clean every day."
A cool voice came from behind the counter. Puss subconsciously took off his cowboy hat, held it in front of his chest, and whistled a few times.
Li Yili turned to look and saw a girl sitting behind the old counter with a burlap sack tied around her head, who looked to be no more than sixteen years old.
"Ahem—let me introduce you. This is our contact person at this location, Miss Anne."
Puss bent down to make way, but his heel accidentally bumped into the bucket with a mop sticking out of it. The mop tilted and crashed down on Puss's head with a thud.
“Small is unnecessary,” Annie said, resting her chin on her hand and scrutinizing Li Yili with a critical eye. “I can’t believe someone actually survives the first night. It’s unbelievable…”
Annie paused, then lowered her head.
"So, have we finally moved from the difficult beginning to the difficult perseverance? That's really giving me a headache."
“Hmm? I never said I would help you,” Li Yili tilted her head, resting her chin on her hand. “Maybe I should betray you.”
Puss was stunned at first, then, after realizing what was happening, he raised his hand with an incredulous expression and pointed at Li Yili, "Ah—you bastard!"
“Is it strange? This isn’t child’s play,” Li Yili rolled her eyes.
"You bastard, stop joking!" Puss frantically pulled out a revolver named Dio from his pocket and pointed it at Li Yili.
“Mr. Cowboy, your gun is out of bullets,” Rebecca said after a moment’s hesitation.
"I know! I'm just giving you a chance to reflect! I can reload so fast you can't even react!" Puss warned sharply, holding the gun in his right hand, while his left hand stealthily reached for the pouch hanging on his lower back.
Li Yili swayed towards Pus, who immediately seemed startled.
He jumped up like a frog, and the bullets he held in his left hand clattered and fell to the ground.
The atmosphere suddenly became incredibly awkward.
After a while, Annie pinched the bridge of her nose, breaking the awkward silence. "Are you sure you want to report this? An idiot and a disabled person don't look like a resistance organization at all."
"Disabled person?"
Li Yili raised an eyebrow. Annie lowered her arms, turned left and right, and slid out from behind the counter. The girl, who looked to be under sixteen, was sitting in a wheelchair that looked to be of poor quality.
Li Yili did not believe that Annie was faking her disability, because there was nothing under the long dress hanging on the wheelchair.
“You’re right. Even if we report you, no one will believe you’re a resistance organization,” Li Yili said, spreading her hands to her sides. “I can pretend I’ve never met you.”
"Hey—weren't you here to help us?!" Puss's eyes widened.
“Helping a group of resistance organizations that aren’t even worth reporting…Are you crazy or am I crazy?” Li Yili rolled her eyes.
Puss was taken aback, then immediately turned to look at Anne, opened his mouth and stammered for a moment before swallowing hard. He scratched his face and laughed awkwardly, "Miss Anne, I think what this gentleman said... is quite right. Why don't you give him some encouragement..."
After a moment's hesitation, Puss gave a trembling thumbs-up.
"Of course! I have great confidence in our organization, you don't need to worry."
Anne's lips twitched slightly as she held her forehead.
"Sir, how should I address you?"
“Hmm… this question has stumped me,” Li Yili thought for a moment and then blinked. “You can call me Mr. Yellow Raincoat.”
“Hiss… Mr. Yellow Raincoat, I understand what you mean. How can I be sure that after I demonstrate that we have the means to be reported, you won’t go ahead and report us?” Annie interlaced her fingers. “Do you… have the qualifications to make us take this risk?”
"Did you think that fire was caused by a natural gas explosion?"
Chapter Twenty-Seven: High-Quality Products, Qualified Products, and Defective Products
Anne crossed her fingers in front of her, tapping them lightly on the back of her hand as she weighed the pros and cons.
Puss picked up the bullets from the ground, trembling, and loaded them into Dio's magazine.
"So you're saying you started the fire that burned down the food processing plant? They're not as calm as they seem. What do you think will happen if this gets out?" Annie sighed. "Are you willing to risk being reported by us? Is that what you're trying to say?"
Li Yili covered her neck and bent her head to the right.
Even if I really did it, the Cult of Steam and Steel wouldn't utter a sound, and would even thoughtfully ask me if I felt the fire wasn't burning bright enough.
Li Yili didn't think the Church of Steam and Steel was fawning over him to this extent, but if it was to reassure him, the Church of Steam and Steel could lower its stance even further.
"If possible, I hope that even if you all fail, I can escape unscathed."
Annie was taken aback, and just as she was about to speak, Puss waved his fist and shouted, "Hey, hey, hey—shouldn't we be fighting side by side at a time like this! Let me tell you! If anything happens, you're not getting away either!"
“Okay—” Anne nodded.
"Eh?!"
“Mr. Puss, would you believe someone you’ve only met for less than an hour who claims to be willing to share life and death with you? Especially since this person hasn’t shared any idea of how to escape the [Plague]’s pursuit and survive until daylight,” Anne spun her wheelchair back behind the counter. “That’s fine, it’s just a deal.”
Puss opened his mouth, but couldn't find any other words to refute it. After muttering a few words, he stuffed Dio into the holster strapped to his thigh.
“Well then, Mr. Yellow Raincoat, may we move on to the next topic?” Annie smiled politely at Li Yili, then turned to Rebecca and Aditi. “Ladies, you can pick out some clothes here. The dressing room is in the back.”
"Is it really okay?" Rebecca asked Li Yili.
“It’s just a small gift to get to know each other, I hope it can help us get closer,” Anne smiled. “I don’t expect you to live and die with us, but I hope you can at least remember that we tried to live in this world.”
"Ugh—it's so heavy," Rebecca complained before pulling Adi toward the wardrobe.
Puss muttered to himself as he turned to face the wall, pulling his cowboy hat down over his eyes. "Of course, just don't betray us."
Li Yili raised an eyebrow, crossed her arms, and leaned against the door frame. "How do you solve your food problem?"
