"How many books are there here? How many words are there?" Yuri asked, looking at the books around her, feeling as if she was surrounded by books.
"There's an old saying that if all the written words of mankind were collected, there would be more than the stars in the universe," Chito couldn't know, so she used a sentence she knew to express how many books there were.
Chapter 175 Books Don't Bewitch People, People Are Intoxicated by Them
“The stars,” Senju sighed softly. The books here were written in various languages, and the books the two of them picked out only occupied a tiny portion of the bookshelves they passed. “It feels like finding the sun in the universe.”
"What is Senju saying?" Yuri didn't quite understand what Senju was saying. After the elevator went up for a while, it suddenly stopped with a click. Only then did the three of them notice that there were no more bookshelves up there.
"Is this the very top of the bookshelf?" Chito looked up and noticed a ladder fixed to the shelf. "We should be able to climb up from here."
“Hmm,” Yuri nodded. She climbed up the ladder and froze when her gaze passed over the bookshelf. “Really, there are more words than stars in the sky.”
"Yu?" Chito called out in confusion. Yuri climbed up the ladder to the top of the bookshelf, and Chito and Senju followed. Once they reached the top, they realized why Yuri had been stunned.
Where the three could see, there were countless bookshelves extending into the darkness, each the same size as the ones beneath their feet, filled with countless books.
“It’s truly a universe of words,” Chito exclaimed, looking at the countless bookshelves. Yuri, standing next to him, also felt a little dizzy looking at them. “This must be a collection of all of humanity’s thoughts.”
"Yes, that must be it," Chito looked at the bookshelves with great happiness and excitement, and immediately sat down. "Wow, so many books!"
"Hmm," Senju felt the same way. When Number Six told her there were 10 billion books here, she didn't think it was a lot. But seeing just a small part of the collection, she realized there were actually so many books here.
After a moment of reflection, Qian Shou looked at the top of the bookshelf, which was seven or eight meters wide and of immeasurable length. The entire bookshelf was made of metal and felt extremely sturdy.
"Let's rest here for a while," the three of them sat on the bookshelf. Chito put the books he found aside and started tidying them up. Yuri took out a fuel stove and started boiling water.
"So, did you find any good books?" Yuri asked as she watched Chito organize the books. Chito categorized the books on one side. "Well, I can understand some of them."
Then she pushed a pile of books in front of Senju, saying, "These should be written with characters that Senju knows. I only know a few myself."
"Really? Thank you, Senju," Senju said, looking at the stack of books pushed in front of him. They were all written in Chinese characters, and he found a few books he had read before.
"Wow, I actually found one!" Yuri was quite surprised to find that there were books that Chihiro could read. Chihiro clearly didn't understand many of the words along the way. Then she took out a package and took out a tube from it.
“Maybe this really is the book of the whole world,” Chito stared blankly at a book in his hand for a while, then noticed Yuri holding a bag. “Yuri, what are you carrying?”
“Oh, this is something we found inside the rocket,” Yuri said, taking out two sugar cube-sized solids and throwing them into the boiling water. “The taste of this… I think it’s… coffee.”
"Coffee? The kind we used to drink?" Chito picked up the thing from Yuri's hand with a puzzled look, took out a piece and curiously licked it, his face immediately turning bitter. "It's so bitter."
Senju noticed this as well, picked up the bag that Yuri had placed aside, and discovered several tubular items inside with the words "Nutritional Supplement" written on them.
"It shouldn't be coffee," Senju said, puzzled after seeing the words on it. It should contain many beneficial ingredients. He took out a piece and licked it. A familiar bitter taste rushed into his mind, and Senju's expression changed instantly. "So bitter!"
"Hmm, it shouldn't be so bitter if you put it in water," Yuri said, stirring the water in the pot while comforting the two of them. After a while, she took out three cups and poured the brewed coffee from the pot into them.
The three of them picked it up and drank it. Sure enough, the bitterness had faded considerably, and there was even some fragrance mixed in.
“I remember Grandpa drank it before, but I don’t really like the bitter taste,” Chito said, taking a sip from the cup as she recalled the past. However, she didn’t put the cup down but continued drinking.
"Hmm, but it tastes really good," Yuri said, taking a big gulp and sighing with satisfaction.
After the three of them had been drinking coffee for a while, Chito suddenly remembered something and started rummaging through a pile of books. "Oh right, I found a book that Yu might like."
“Oh, but I can’t read,” Yuri said, somewhat puzzled. But Chito immediately handed her a book. “This is it.”
"Oh, this is it," Yuri exclaimed excitedly after flipping through the book, "Even though I can't read it, I can still understand it."
"Fish?" Senju looked at the book Yuri was holding with a puzzled expression. It had the word "fish" and a fish on it, along with familiar symbols. It seemed that every book here was made in the same place and had the same symbols on it.
"This is an illustrated book, a book that uses pictures to explain things," Chito explained, seeing that Senju looked a little confused. Then the three of them leaned together and looked at the pictures in the book.
"Is this a fish?" Yuri asked, pointing to the various sizes and shapes of the fish.
“They are all of them,” Senju replied, though he didn’t recognize most of them either. Chito nodded in agreement. “They should all be, but they are all fish that no one has ever seen before.”
“They all have such nice shapes,” Yuri praised excitedly, then said with a hint of longing, “I wonder which one tastes the best.”
"So you wanted to eat it," Chito remarked, then leaned against Yuri and watched together. After watching for a while, Senju sat down and slowly drank her coffee.
“Books are amazing,” Yuri said, looking at the contents of the book. Even though she couldn’t read, she could understand what it was about. Chito, who was leaning against her, agreed. “Right?”
After taking a sip of coffee, she slowly lay down among the pile of books, using Yuri as her pillow. "Ah, I'm already thinking of staying here."
"Will you stay here?" Yuri asked, but her words shattered Chito's dream, and Chito came to his senses. "No, collecting books was originally Grandpa's hobby."
Chapter 176 Connecting All Hearts
“No, it shouldn’t be interest, it’s something harder to explain,” Chito continued, as if he had thought of something. “When Grandpa was on a mission, he would bring back the books he found, whether he could understand them or not.”
"Grandpa, what is your purpose in doing this?" Yuri asked curiously. Chito lay on Yuri's lap and thought for a while before saying, "It's probably to investigate all sorts of things, but I think it's probably not just that."
Chito paused for a moment before continuing, "As for me, I believe that the purpose and interest in doing this are not entirely the same."
"About the universe and curiosity?" Yuri asked curiously. Chito lay there looking up. "Maybe a little, but it's all of it."
Then Qianhu recounted everything he knew, one by one, "Building airplanes, creating maps, whether it's using machines to keep the city running, or our goal being the highest level, and..."
It was people who built such a large city...
"Are all the goals the same?" Yuri asked after listening to Chito's words. Humans have done so many things, surely they are all for one purpose.
“No, it’s not even the goal,” Chito thought for a moment and then denied it. Those things were like a long chain, with something connecting them. “Even if one day we know the end of all things, we can’t just sit idly by. That feeling of wanting to do something exists in my heart like a source, and it’s like the center connects all those things together.”
“I don’t quite understand,” Yuri said from the side. Not only Yuri, but Senju also didn’t quite understand. She felt that what Chito was thinking was more profound and more serious.
“Yes,” Chito said, holding his cup and looking ahead, with unspoken words in his heart, “So, at the end of this long connection, is this where we are now?”
"The coffee is delicious," Yuri said, picking up her cup and taking a sip, no longer thinking about what had just happened.
“It’s really delicious,” Senju said, watching from the side. A row of lights had suddenly come on around them, making the interior of the library slightly clearer. The three of them sat quietly on top of the bookshelves until they finished their coffee.
“Let’s go,” Chito stood up, while Yuri was quite surprised. “Are we leaving now? There are still so many books.”
“There’s no way we can take them with us,” Chito realized soberly, and picked up the books from the ground one by one. “It’s already very lucky that we can take these books with us. We’ll come back to look at the books here after we reach the top.”
“Indeed, there are hundreds of millions of books here, many of which we cannot understand,” Senju said, revealing the number of books, which was enough to shock the two of them.
"Hundreds of millions? What is a hundred million?!" Qianhu seemed quite shaken and started counting with his hands. "Isn't that more than the number of photos in a camera?"
“Yes, that only has a few hundred thousand pages, but the books here are thousands of times more,” Senju added fuel to the fire. Chito was somewhat intoxicated and chuckled to himself. “Ah, this really is a universe of books. I wish I could live here forever.”
"Chihiro?" Yuri shook Chihiro in confusion, and Chihiro woke up, struggling with his thoughts. "This won't do, but it feels like such a pity. But we still have to leave."
“Chihiro has already taken some books, right? Let’s just consider them as borrowed from the library. We can come back here later to exchange them for other books,” Senju suggested from the side. “The library allows people to borrow books, after all.”
“Really?” Qianhu seemed to have found a solution. “You must come back to return the book later, and you can also find other books to read.”
Senju looked at Sento and felt helpless and sorry for him. It was an ordinary thing, but it was a luxury for Sento. Senju felt a pang in his heart and secretly made up his mind to make Sento’s wish come true, and to do it in a better way.
After walking around the top of the bookshelf for a while, the three returned to the elevator. Senju collected many more books from the bookshelf, intending to put them in the hut as research and tools, even though he no longer wanted to use the enchanting table.
As the elevator slowly descended, the three returned to the ground. Chito reluctantly left the elevator, and Yuri turned off the switch above. As the lights above went out, the lights in the library gradually went out as well, leaving only the lantern in Chito's hand and the torch that Senju had stuck in the distance still emitting light.
"Let's go," Sento said reluctantly, heading towards the torch. After walking for a while, the three returned to the carriage. Sento put away the torch, and the three of them slowly drove away from the doorway in the carriage.
After the three left, the entire library was plunged into true darkness. No one knew when or who would come back.
When the three of them came out, the sun was still shining on them. Qianhu drove the car slowly towards the slope on one side. She seemed a little sad about leaving this place, and tears welled up in her eyes.
"Great! What a great haul today!" Qianhu wiped away his tears and encouraged himself. "After all, I found so many books and was able to take them with me. I'm so lucky."
“Indeed, I’ve never seen many books before. They must have all been collected and put here,” Yuri said suddenly, watching the library recede into the distance. Then she looked at Senju and said, “But Senju, your ability is really useful. I also put a few books in there. Senju probably took even more.”
"Yes, I found a lot of books," Chito said, her tears turning into a smile as she thought about her find. "Thank you, Senju, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to take these books with me."
"It's alright, but Chi really loves books. It seems I'll have to teach you more Chinese characters in the future," Chishou said half-seriously and half-jokingly.
However, the one in front nodded vigorously, "Yes, Senju, you must teach me more. I want to read more books and know more things."
"Chito really loves learning. If she were in school, she would definitely be a good student," Chito's words made Senju feel a little emotional. In the past, Chito would probably have been very happy, since she would have to learn new things every day.
"School? Students? What are those?" Yuri asked curiously, then followed up, "And what am I like?"
"Yu?" Senju looked at Yuri carefully, and Yuri stared back at Senju. "Yu is probably a ditzy and airheaded character."
Chapter 177 Fishing
"What is that?" Yuri asked Senju curiously. Senju smiled but didn't explain. However, Yuri seemed to understand what Senju meant and grabbed him, shaking him violently. "Tell me quickly, it doesn't feel like something good."
"Ah, Yuri, don't shake it! You're going to fall!" Senju exclaimed in fright and quickly grabbed Yuri, and the two of them fell onto the car together. "Let me explain. It just means that Yuri is very forgetful."
"Really?" Yuri stared at Senju with suspicion, then exclaimed triumphantly, "It's better to forget about memories, ahahaha."
"Hey, you two, you've ruined the perfect atmosphere! Be quiet!" Qianhu, who was driving, turned around and shouted at the two of them in an annoyed manner, completely dispelling the slightly melancholy atmosphere.
"Oh, Chihiro is angry, how scary," Yuri pretended to be scared and shrank into Chihiro's arms. Chihiro saw her like this and continued driving forward in annoyance, but a smile began to appear on his face.
"La la la," Yuri sang a tune she had heard from behind, while the two people beside her listened quietly as the car continued to move forward on the winding slopes.
After a while, Yuri stopped singing, and Senju clapped her hands, saying, "Yuri sang so well, she could be a professional singer."
"Thank you, haha, I think you sang well too," Yuri cheered triumphantly, then asked Senju, "Why did Senju clap her hands?"
"It's probably a ritual after the performance," Chito guessed. "We've seen the same sound in the videos we've seen."
After listening to Chito's words, Yuri turned her gaze to Senju, who nodded in agreement. "That's true. After the performance, people applaud for a good concert."
"Sigh, why clapping?" Yuri was still fixated on this point, so Senju had no choice but to make up a story, "Probably because you can clap your hands to keep time."
“Like this,” Senju thought of a piece of music in his mind and started clapping, “this is a simple rhythm.”
“Really,” Yuri clapped a few times too, “It feels so good,” she clapped her hands and started singing.
After an unknown amount of time, Yuri grew tired of singing and lay down quietly in Senju's arms, accompanied by the roar of the car. The three of them finally emerged from the winding slope and came to a passage. After driving forward for a while, they found that they had arrived in a city.
Ahead were rows of buildings, and behind them were interconnected structures. Qianhu drove forward, and after a while, the sunlight shone down, turning reddish, but still illuminating the three of them.
“It’s evening,” Senju said, looking at the bright red sun. Yuri, in her arms, rubbed her eyes and looked at the sun. “Really, time flies. It’s time for dinner again.”
“Really,” Qianhu sighed helplessly, then looked at the city ahead. “But it’s a little strange, there’s no snow or anything here.”
“Yes, that’s true,” Senju then noticed that there was no snow on the ground around them, and looking up, he didn’t see anything covering them. “There must be heating equipment running here that melted the snow.”
"Sigh, snow doesn't matter, let's eat," Yuri started making a fuss from behind. "Let's find a place to rest, I'm hungry."
“Well, we still have a lot to do tonight, let’s rest now,” Chito agreed, and the three of them parked the car on the side of the road. Chito started assembling the little house on the empty road. This time, they didn’t have to build a snow house.
Since everyone had put their things in their bags, the three of them parked the car on the side of the road and went into the small house. Yuri didn't take anything, but she immediately collapsed onto the bed, saying, "Ah, I'm so tired. Chizuru, can you cook for me?"
"Yes, yes," Chito looked at Yuri with affection, "What would you like to eat for dinner?"
“Eat fish,” Yuri suddenly sat up, took out a book, and pointed to the pictures inside. “I want this one, this one, and this one.”
"Yes, yes, but none of these are there," Chito said, looking at the fish encyclopedia Yuri was holding up, ruthlessly denying Yuri's wild idea.
“But Yuri can come fishing. There are two kinds of food here, plus canned food, that makes three kinds,” Senju tempted her. Yuri got out of bed and looked at Senju seriously. “Senju, please teach me how to fish.”
