Chapter 110 The White Forest
After watching the cat finish drinking the fuel, the three of them got back into the car and prepared to leave. The cat followed them and ran up to the car, then lay down on it.
"Cats are so lucky, there's food everywhere," Yuri said enviously, looking at the cat. There was cat food everywhere in the city now.
"Thank you," the cat said, expressing its gratitude for Yuri's compliment.
Yuri stared at it longingly, thinking, "If it were me, in an emergency..."
Hearing Yuri's hungry words, Chito revealed what Yuri hadn't said: "You don't still want to eat this guy, do you?"
“I don’t think it looks delicious at all, with its white and soft appearance,” Yuri stared at the cat, her mouth watering, her thoughts and words completely different.
“Hmm,” the two people next to her glanced at Yuri, and Senju was somewhat relieved, “That’s good, it’s not an emergency yet.”
After starting the car, Qianhu reminded Yuri again, "It must smell like gunpowder and fuel all over."
Unfortunately, Chitoge's words did not interrupt Yuri's thoughts; instead, they made her even more eager. "Maybe gunpowder tastes good too."
"Then you might as well just eat gunpowder," Qianhu muttered before driving the car through the gap in the barbed wire.
Thousand Hands looked up at the devices. It was a four- or five-meter-tall iron pole standing on the ground, with three or four white, rectangular, curved iron blades horizontally attached to it. These blades were constantly rotating, and in front of it were countless other such devices, rotating incessantly.
"Crack," the car seemed to have run over something. Senju looked down and found that it had run over a sign. Senju looked at the words on it, "Wind Power Plant," and then he knew what these devices were for.
"Could it be that in the end they'll even want to eat me?" Chito suddenly worried, while Yuri looked at Senju with a smile, and Senju was also speechless. "Could it be that I'm food too?"
“Aha!” Yuri’s eyes suddenly lit up, as if she had thought of something and exclaimed.
Chito, who knew Yuri very well, immediately knew what she was thinking. "Don't give me that 'I knew it' look on your face."
"What's on Yuri's mind again?" Senju leaned to one side, and Yuri took the opportunity to half-lie down in the carriage with the cat in her arms.
"This is it, the food chain and stuff," Yuri proudly told everyone what she had just thought of.
“It’s too difficult to maintain this with just three people,” Chito said, not optimistic about Yuri’s idea. “If that’s the case, who will be at the top?”
"Yeah, in a food chain, each level should be ten times larger than the one above it," Senju complained. But a food chain isn't just made up of three consumers, even though Senju is now considered a semi-producer. "Huh? Am I at the bottom of the chain?"
Yuri, standing next to her, stared at Senju and chuckled. Right now, a food chain diagram probably appeared in her mind: Senju → Chito → Neko → Yuri herself. She wanted to reign supreme at the top of the food chain.
“Ah, the forest,” Chito suddenly exclaimed. Yuri was a little confused. “What’s that?”
“I saw a similar scene in an illustration in a book before, like this one with lots of plants,” Chito recalled and explained to Yuri.
"A forest, ah, it's made up of many trees, and these look just like trees too," Senju said with a sigh as he looked around. This place, like the forest, also provides energy for humanity.
“Trees? Forests?” Yuri thought to herself as she lay there.
"There must be many creatures inside, and a food chain or something," Chito imagined the forest of the past, but this fantasy was the same as the reality of long ago.
"What about living things?" Senju sighed as he looked at the surrounding steel forest. If he had enough soil, he could build a forest now, but he couldn't do anything about animals.
Yuri looked around in confusion, "But why did it turn out like this? There are machines everywhere."
“It’s because of energy,” Senju said, looking at the constantly spinning leaves around him. It was as if he saw a scene like the one he used to look down on in the past, except one was a vibrant green and the other was a cold, lifeless white.
"Energy?" Chito and Yuri were puzzled.
"Yes, energy. This is a facility that converts the power of the wind into electricity that humans can use, just like how people used to start fires in the forest in the past."
“I see, no wonder the forest is gone now,” Yuri said, as if she understood. “But how long did it take?”
"Who knows? Maybe it took a long time to change," Chito guessed, then sighed. "But I don't know anything about what happened before, which is why I collect books."
"Indeed, the book records many things from the past, but unfortunately there's not much left now," Senju said with some disappointment. Although he knew some knowledge, it was far too insignificant compared to the entirety of human civilization.
“Ah, although we can’t understand the past, we can still understand the future, right?” Yuri thought for a moment and said, “If we have time.”
"What about the future?"
"Correct."
"The prerequisite is to be alive."
"Ah, right, death is no good," Yuri suddenly remembered this.
Suddenly, I woke up with a start.
“We can’t know things that are too far in the future,” Chito sighed, while Senju kept looking at the constantly spinning leaves. “Maybe a long time from now, someone will discover these things.”
"It's possible, but human lifespan is too short to understand all sorts of things," Chito said somewhat pessimistically.
"It is indeed too short. The universe is billions of years old, human history is tens of thousands of years old, and human history is only a few decades old," Senju sighed. Perhaps human history here will soon come to an end.
"Hmm," Sento suddenly exclaimed softly. Senju looked up and realized that they were just below the edge of the forest. He got up and looked around before realizing that the car had already emerged from the white forest.
Following the barbed wire fence, Qianhu drove the car to a gap, exiting the wind power plant's perimeter and onto the snow-covered ground outside.
Once they reached the snowy area, Chito stopped the car. Yuri, who had been dozing off while chewing on her cat, woke up. "Uh, what's wrong?"
"Hey, cat, the radio waves are coming from that direction, right?" Chito asked the cat to confirm the direction.
“Yes, over there,” the cat pointed with its short forelegs. Yuri looked at the thing in front of her. “Could it be coming from that thing?”
“Probably,” the cat replied, and the three of them stared blankly at the huge black object on the snow in the distance.
Chapter 111 The Equipment Still Running
"Huh? Huh?" Senju looked at the objects in front of her, somewhat confused, and grabbed Yuri beside her, asking, "Isn't this high in the sky? Isn't this a snowy field? Why is this thing here?"
"Senju, what's the panic?" Yuri was a little confused by Senju's agitation. Although the building looked a bit strange, there was no need to react like this. "Do you know what this is?"
"This is a submarine! Don't you know that?" Senju was thrown into confusion as the enormous submarine drew closer.
"A submarine? What's that?" Chito and Yuri didn't understand, so they stopped the car and looked at it from the side.
"Wow, it's huge!" Chito exclaimed, taking several photos of it. Senju also calmed down from the chaos, taking a few deep breaths before settling down.
After examining the submarine closely, he discovered that it seemed to have been there for a long time, and several ladders had been built around it leading upwards, as if that were a passageway.
"So what exactly is a submarine?" Yuri asked Senju while packing her backpack.
"That's a ship that operates underwater. It's completely enclosed and can move underwater like a fish. People use it to explore the seabed," Senju explained incoherently, finding the sight of the submarine in the air utterly confusing.
"Fish? Can we eat this?" Yuri stared blankly at the submarine for a while, then reached out her hand to the cat. "Come here."
The cat scurried up Yuri's arm and into the backpack, while Chito also slung his backpack over his shoulder. "How could this be? You can tell this isn't for eating. But where's the entrance?"
“The submarine entrance is up there,” Senju said, and the three of them looked up, where there was a thick layer of white snow.
"It's over there. Looks like we have to go up from here," Chito said after looking for a while, then walked to the ladder next to him, and Yuri followed with the cat on her back.
Senju, realizing he had nothing, followed the two. The three of them climbed up the ladder beside them. Sento looked at the huge submarine next to him with some doubt, "Is this just for underwater operations? It must have other uses."
“That’s right, most of the big and powerful things we’ve seen along the way are,” Yuri paused, and then Chito continued, “weapons.”
The three of them arrived at the top of the submarine, where snowflakes began to fall. Beneath their feet was a long stretch of snow, at the rare end of which was a raised building.
After the three arrived at the spot, they found a ladder on the protrusion. They climbed up the ladder and found a depression filled with a layer of snowflakes.
After digging for a while, the three of them discovered a circular device on the ground. "This is probably the entrance."
Chito tried to open it, but after twisting it for a while, there was no response. Yuri asked from the side, "Can't you open it?"
"Hmm," Chito said dejectedly, while Senju stared blankly at the round hatch, wondering where to press the switch.
“Let me try,” Senju said, just as he took out the lever to test it, when the cat ran out beside him. “I know this one.”
Then, right before everyone's eyes, it deformed its forelimbs and inserted them into the ring in the middle of the entrance, making a "eeeeeeeeee" sound.
As the cat meowed, a "click" sound came from the entrance, as if the lock inside was being opened. As the sound stopped, the circular entrance suddenly rose slightly, and the cat stepped aside. The three people next to it carefully watched the entrance.
"Snap!" The round door at the entrance suddenly popped open, the three people next to it jumped back, and then the round door flipped to the side, pinning the cat underneath.
"Is this the entrance?" The three stared at the hole that appeared below. Below was a pipe with a ladder leading down. The cat also ran out from under the hatch, seemingly unharmed.
"Let's go in and take a look," Senju said, exchanging glances with everyone.
After that, they went down the ladder first, followed by Chito and Yuri.
After going down a long ladder, everyone came out of the pipe, crossed a road to the side, and pushed open a hatch to enter a large room with many lit screens and sounds coming from all around.
"Chihiro, there's a sound," Yuri said, drawing her gun defensively. "The lights are still on."
“Yes,” Chito heard her too. She looked at the lit screens around her and answered softly, “I’ve been working all along.”
“These look like computers. This place is still the same as before,” Senju said, showing great interest in the devices. They looked like computers placed on pillars, but the keyboards were replaced by screens, and there were several huge screens on one wall.
Then the three of them went closer to the screens and started looking at them. These computer-like devices were installed on tables on both sides of the room, with a row of chairs on one side of each table. The sounds they heard were from these devices.
After watching for a while, they realized they didn't quite understand, so they pushed open a hatch on one side, which revealed a passageway. The three of them went inside, and there were indicator lights on the walls of the passageway that said 'Silence'.
The three continued exploring the passage until they saw a door with a familiar symbol. Qianhu stopped there. "Hmm?"
"So this is a nuclear submarine," Senju said, no longer surprised to see the familiar nuclear symbol, having seen quite a few along the way.
"Senju, do you know what's in here?" Yuri asked from the side.
"This is probably the power source for the entire submarine or the storage location for nuclear weapons," Senju guessed simply. Either way, it's dangerous. The warning on the door probably means "No Entry."
While Senju was thinking this, Chito fumbled around for a while, and then the door marked with the nuclear symbol opened.
Senju watched the two go inside, sighed, and followed them in. Inside was a small room with steel supports visible above, a machine still running on the floor, and lights on around it.
Looking at these round machines, Senju guessed that they were devices like reactors.
“It’s still running,” Qianhu sighed as he looked at it. “Is this the power source?”
After watching for a while, the three of them noticed a ladder leading upwards. After climbing up, they found that it was a road made of barbed wire, with many cylindrical pillars marked with nuclear symbols standing on both sides.
"Nuclear bombs?" Senju looked at the cylinders with some confusion. What did the numbers marked on them mean? They didn't look like weapons.
Chapter 112 Is it chocolate?
Just as Senju was filled with some doubt and uncertainty, Chito and Yuri continued walking along the road. Senju abandoned her idea of packing these things up and followed them.
After walking for a while, the three of them came to a room with several tables and chairs around them. There were also several screens on the walls, but all of them were turned off.
"Is this the cafeteria?" Senju wondered, looking at the layout of the room. Then he ran to a cabinet that looked like a refrigerator and started rummaging through it.
"The cafeteria?" Yuri asked. "Is it a place to eat?"
"Hmm, I thought there would be something here," Senju said dejectedly after rummaging through the refrigerator; there was nothing inside.
After searching for a while without finding anything, Yuri sat down on a chair and wiped the table. Then she looked at the gloves she was wearing; there was very little dust on them. "Leaving aside those machines I don't know how to use, this place is quite clean."
