He then lit a cigarette. "My name is Kanazawa. I'm traveling while drawing maps," he said, glancing at the two men pointing guns at him. "Excuse me, could you please put your guns down?"

"Can you put it down?" Yuri asked. Chito observed for a moment and then nodded. "Put it down."

The two then put away their guns, but everyone was still a little confused about his 'bridge-building' operation. However, he immediately explained it to everyone.

“There’s no way to cross this ditch,” he said, then pointed to the 'bridge' next to him. “Isn’t this a good solution? We can just cross over from here.”

"I see, although we almost lost our lives," the three finally understood what had happened, but the other party's attention was drawn to the car next to them. "Is this your car? Where are you going?"

"We need to cross this ditch and try to find the entrance to the upper level."

"Well, I need your help with something."

"help?"

"Yes, I'd like you to give me a ride there. Will four of you be alright?" He then glanced at the man in the tin can and asked, "And who is this?"

“I am Senju, and these are Sento and Yuri,” Senju introduced everyone, then looked at the gravel road beside them, “It’s no problem, and you even cleared the way for us.”

"Really? That's great, but it's not easy to get up here."

"It's alright, everyone rest here for a bit, I'll go clear the road," Senju said and went to clear the road. Kanazawa followed and carried some gravel to smooth the road, but when he saw Senju's actions, he was so shocked that he dropped his cigarette butt. "What is this?"

Chapter 42 Even if it's an illusion, it doesn't matter

After a moment of surprise, Jinze picked up the cigarette butt again and said, "How did you do that? That makes things much easier."

After a while, Senju finally turned one end of the building's ramp into a staircase, and then Senju started the car and drove up the staircase.

However, it was still a bit difficult for Chito to drive, so Senju and Yuri helped push the cart. Looking at the stones next to them, Yuri felt grateful. "Luckily, Senju is here, otherwise I would have to work again. These stones look very heavy."

Kanazawa, who was following beside him, also recognized Chihiro's vehicle. "A semi-railcar, this is the first time I've ever seen one."

"Speaking of which, Kanazawa, where's your car?" Chito asked, curious about Kanazawa being alone. Kanazawa thought for a moment before answering, "I used to have a motorcycle, but it broke down, so I'm trying to hitch a ride."

Then he saw the car parked on the platform above and quickly went over to help. "I know the way around here. Just take me to the entrance to the upper level. I'll figure out how to get there myself later."

Just then, the car reached the top. Yuri, seeing that the car had finally made it up, lay down on the steps to celebrate, "Oh, I finally made it up! I'm exhausted."

Then he sighed, "It's been so long since I've sweated. Sweating like this makes me feel alive."

“Living,” Kanazawa said, somewhat puzzled. Yuri pulled Chito aside and explained, “Chito said she didn’t know whether she should live or not.”

"I didn't say that."

Senju then sat in the driver's seat, and the three of them squeezed into the back of the vehicle. After a while, Kanazawa asked Senju, puzzled by his attire, "By the way, why are you wearing armor? Is it made of iron?"

"Of course, it's for safety. Would you like one too?" Thousand Hands answered seriously, but...

Jinze declined, saying, "It looks heavy, so I don't need it."

A while later, the car arrived at the other side of the bridge. Although there were many loose stones on the slope, Senju cleared them up and a road appeared. However, Senju still carefully drove the car down in reverse, and several people helped with ropes to prevent the car from sliding down too fast.

After reaching the road on the other side of the ditch, Senju took out his car. The sudden appearance of the car made Kanazawa feel like he was dreaming, and his hand holding the cigarette was trembling. "How did this happen? Am I hallucinating? Am I actually all alone?"

"Kaneze, what's wrong? Hurry up and get in the car," Senju said after releasing the car and fixing the levers, then called to Kaneze, who was standing there in a daze.

"Oh, how did you do that?" Jinze was a little surprised, but he remained calm on the surface and sat down in Senju's carriage.

"This is my ability; I can pack things up." After seeing Kanazawa settled in, Senju started the car, with Chito and Yuri following behind.

"Really? That's so convenient," Jinze said, hugging his bag with relief. After driving for a while, a fork in the road appeared ahead. "Turn left, and follow closely behind. There's a gas station nearby, but I don't know if two cars will be enough."

"That's enough. Finding a gas station is a huge help. We haven't been able to find fuel here lately," Qianhu said, following behind. The two cars were very close together on the road, slowly moving forward according to Jinze's directions.

After wandering around for a while, a somewhat familiar building appeared ahead, but this one was much larger, with a ring of steps leading upwards, and various pipes connected to it. It was over ten meters high, though of course it couldn't compare to the pillars that supported the entire city behind it.

The two cars stopped on the side. After a few people approached, Qianhu noticed that it was much larger than he had seen before. "What a magnificent refueling facility!"

"This seems to be the last gas station around here, since it's near the passageway now."

“Really? Let me see,” Qianhu said, climbing the ladder surrounding the oil tank to identify the pipes. After circling around, he found his target and read out the number on it, “7, this should be it. There’s no rubber hose.”

"Senju, put the bucket over here, and also give me that rubber hose. Yu, you come and help too."

“Okay,” the two agreed, and Senju placed the oil drum under the pipe. Yuri waited nearby, and then Senju went up the steps and gave Chito a rubber hose she had found before. “Is this one suitable?”

"It's a little thinner, but the length is enough," Qianhu said, somewhat discouraged after gesturing for a while.

Thousand Hands simply took out a funnel, put the rubber tube underneath it, and then lowered the tube down, so that it reached the ground.

"Yuri, put the pipe into the oil drum," then Senju placed the funnel under the pipe. After seeing Yuri put the other end of the pipe into the oil drum, Chito turned on the valve, and fuel flowed out.

"They're really capable," Jinze thought, though his attention was focused on the map in his hand. He still noticed the few people working around him and couldn't help but feel a little impressed.

After the three of them filled the lower oil drums, the two above also got down. Chito and Yuri carried one drum and poured it into the car's fuel tank, while Senju put away the rest.

"Doesn't this car need refueling?" Jinze pointed to Senju's car next to him. He was curious because he saw that Senju's car had been filled up with gas and that Senju hadn't bothered with this one.

"I don't quite understand either, but Senju said his car doesn't need gas."

"My car uses a different energy source. Although it can be refueled, it's better not to waste fuel."

"Oh, really? That's so convenient."

“By the way, Kanazawa, you don’t have a car, right? Do you want to travel with us? There’s enough room,” Senju said, looking at the map in his hand, wanting to pull him into the group.

"Well, I just want to hitch a ride right now. I have other things to do upstairs."

"Really? That's a pity. I'll give you this car once we get to the upper level. Now you'll have to learn how to use it."

"Is this a good idea? I'm just a hitchhiker."

"It's alright, it's alright. We have enough cars, and you even helped us with directions. Otherwise, we wouldn't have been able to find our way either. We're just helping each other out."

After Senju collected the empty oil drum next to him, the group got into the car and slowly moved forward following Kanazawa's directions. On the way, Senju also explained the most important parts of the car to Kanazawa.

Chapter Forty-Three Important Things

After driving for a while, the road widened, and Senju and Sento drove side by side. However, there were many densely packed buildings on both sides, with many machines hanging on them, probably air conditioners or something similar.

“There are so many residential buildings here,” Chito said with some emotion as she looked at the buildings. Kanazawa, who was next to her, knew the reason: “It’s because the area around the communication tower that connects to the upper floors used to be a densely populated area.”

But then he looked around and thought, "There's no one here now."

"So, it was the people who lived here who built this tower."

"Really?" Yuri was curious about who built this place, so Kanazawa told her what he knew.

"Probably not. The people who built this stepped city were more progressive. Our ancestors simply lived on the public facilities built by these ancient people. That's my opinion."

"I see," the three people beside them said, having learned their lesson.

After walking for a while, Jinze pointed to an alley next to them, "Turn left from there."

So the two cars entered one after the other, but the light inside dimmed immediately. Looking up from below, all you could see were many protruding balconies and a little bit of sky. The roads inside were also very narrow, so Senju's car led the way.

After walking for a while, we emerged from the alley and reached a wide road, where we could see a tall tower.

"Although I could always see the tower, I never felt like I was getting close."

"The layout around here is quite complex; we'll probably have to take a detour," Kanazawa remarked, looking at the surrounding buildings with some admiration. However, Yuri, sitting beside him, was somewhat skeptical. "Do the buildings here perfectly match your map?"

“It matches perfectly,” Kanazawa glanced at Yuri sideways, displaying great confidence. “Even the location of the oil supply facilities is exactly the same, right?”

"So, how did you draw your map?" Chito also became interested in Kanazawa's map; without a map, they had suffered a lot.

"Riding a motorcycle around, observing from high places, and so on."

"So, you've been here before?"

“Yes, back then, there was a bridge over that deep ditch,” he said, then rummaged through his bag, which contained many folded papers. “I’ve already drawn most of the maps on this layer.”

Yuri, sitting in the car next to us, asked curiously, "Wow, that's amazing! Can I take a look?"

“Okay,” Jinze was about to hand it over, but Qianhu interrupted him, “You’d better be careful, this guy has burned other people’s books before.”

Kanazawa immediately hugged the bag containing the map tightly, not daring to let go even for a moment, while Yuri smiled with a slightly flushed face, "I won't burn it."

Then she took out her camera, "I have a map here too, is it really that important?"

"Really? Let me see! What map is it?" Kanazawa immediately became interested in the camera, but Yuri was a little puzzled by his behavior. "Is a map really that important?"

“Of course, this is the meaning of my existence. There’s nothing I should do in this world where I can hardly see anyone else,” he said, glancing down at his bag. “Without this, I would definitely die.”

“Great, then let’s burn it,” Yuri said, brandishing her gun in a threatening gesture, which frightened Kanazawa so much that he clutched his schoolbag and lay prone in the carriage.

"No, please don't do this, and why?"

"I'm a little curious, without this, would you actually die?"

"Are you a demon?" Chito retorted to Yuri, which finally stopped her from acting.

Seeing that Yuri had given up, Kanazawa was relieved. "You guys should have something important too, right?"

Following his directions, the two cars drove onto an uphill curve, but Yuri was a little doubtful about what Kanazawa had said was important. "Important? Does Chihiro's diary count?"

“It is indeed important, but it’s not worth dying for,” Qianhu said after thinking for a while. “But You, you would never give up your food, even if it meant death.”

“That’s not true, no, no…” Yuri said somewhat hesitantly.

Jinze looked at the map in the carriage. "Ah, turn right this way."

"Understood," Senju replied and entered a cave.

"We should be there soon," Jinze said. The car drove out of the cave and ahead was the bottom of the huge tower, which looked even bigger as it got closer.

“Wow, it’s huge! Are you going to keep drawing maps of the upper levels after you climb up?” Yuri asked Kanazawa in the car next to her, but he just stared at the tower with his eyes shining.

“Kanazawa seems really happy, so full of life,” Yuri said to Chito. Chito glanced at her and said, “Really? He must have found his target.”

After driving the car to the vicinity of the tower, Senju put the car away. After walking around the tower for a while, the group found a facility that looked usable.

"6? There's no device inside the tower?" Senju looked at the iron cage with some fear; it looked very dangerous.

Jinze then operated it for a while. "I heard that the ascent device should be inside the tower, but nobody knows how to start it, so this was made as a substitute."

“But this is already 100 years old,” Kanazawa added, which made the people next to him even more worried.

"It's so old, I hope it won't break down halfway through."

"It's okay, it looks like it can still move."

Chito was about to drive the car in when Senju stopped him, saying, "This car is too heavy. Let me load it for a bit first."

"One car shouldn't be a problem, right?" Chito was a little reluctant to agree, but Chito didn't think a metal cage could carry the car up. "A car is much heavier than a person. It's safer for me to carry it."

"Really? Then I'll take some things out first. Be careful," she said, and then she drove the car...
