Chapter Forty-Three: Preparing for the Gathering
When Carl picked up the belt, it seemed that he had triggered the emergency device on the belt by doing it incorrectly, and a burst of hypnotic gas was suddenly released.
"It was quite dangerous," Karl said after filtering all the air into his lungs. As expected of Batman's belt, it even had a lead coating to block Kryptonians' X-ray vision, otherwise he wouldn't have triggered the mechanism.
Then Karl opened the pocket on his belt, grabbed a handful of things, and shook it, causing a large pile of items to fall onto the table.
Two grappling hook guns, five miniature locators, several smoke grenades, several small bombs, one stun gun, one sonic bomb, two USB drives, several bat harpoons, one bottle of shark repellent, three breathing filters, five unlabeled vials of unknown medicine, and several signal transmitters, presumably for calling the Batmobile or similar devices...
The table was quickly filled; it was hard to imagine that such a small belt could hold so much stuff.
These items cover all aspects of combat. Batman encounters all sorts of villains during his daily activities, and with this belt, he can take out the appropriate gadgets to deal with them anytime, anywhere.
However, these items alone probably wouldn't sell for 1200 points; there are definitely more valuable items inside the belt.
Karl fumbled around for a while, then pulled out a fist-sized piece of green kryptonite from a lining of his belt.
Feeling the comforting radiation, Karl couldn't help but smile. This large piece of kryptonite, if used sparingly, would last him for more than a year.
Sure enough, there was kryptonite in the belt. Batman, who always prepares for the worst, has developed a contingency plan for each member of the Justice League to prevent them from getting out of control.
Most of the plans remain in the Batcave, awaiting the day they are activated. However, Batman will always carry the Kryptonite Batstone needed to subdue Superman, because if Superman goes out of control, the other members of the League alone will not be able to subdue him.
Carl knew this, which is why he decided to buy the Batman belt, and he was very satisfied with the result.
After the discussion about the rotation pool ended, the group members' attention began to return to their own lives. The chat group wasn't a panacea; apart from the dead members, everyone else had their own things to do.
Kurumi Tokisaki is preparing to return to thirty years ago to kill the original spirits. Now her time reserves are basically sufficient. Spider is diligently practicing using magic under the guidance of the goddess, striving to regain her power as soon as possible. The doctor is repairing the human order in his world, and he really squeezes out time to slack off. As for Gan Yu, needless to say, he works overtime all year round.
[Superman shared his anti-magic tricks.]
Carl quickly prepared the materials he had promised and sent them to the group chat, then closed the chat group.
The time came the next morning.
The Night Owls of Gotham City sent a message.
"Have you made any progress with the probe? Okay, I'll be right there." Karl hung up the phone, got up, and flew out of the building.
He first glanced at the Super Queen sign hanging on the rooftop, who was still unconscious. Carl had really almost killed her earlier, and one night was not enough time for her to recover from her near-death state.
Let her stay hanging there. Carl ignored the Queen and quickly arrived at the underground of Wayne Manor.
Upon seeing Carl approach, Johnny Quick quickly said, as if to take credit, "Boss, after working tirelessly all night, I've finally completed the task. What would have taken several weeks was taken care of by me."
Carl knew what he was thinking; he was just trying to impress Carl because he was afraid Carl would hold him accountable for his past actions. However, Carl didn't care about Johnny Quick right now; the Cosmic Coordinates were more important. "Alright, don't cause me any more trouble. Let me see the results first."
Night Owl displayed all of the night's work on the big screen for Carl to view.
“The plan you provided is feasible. The Speed Force has already determined the approximate location of that universe, and the specific coordinates will only require a little more work. I’m very much looking forward to seeing what that universe is like,” Night Owl said.
Carl said, "There's nothing to look forward to. It's just a bunch of weird and strange things taking up space everywhere. It's not some kind of paradise on earth. Our final destination may not actually be this universe. The main purpose this time is to test the function of the space probe tower."
"That's really pointless of you to say it like that." Night Owl's enthusiasm had been dampened considerably.
However, he quickly said, "Fine, you decide where to go, any universe is fine, I just want Gotham."
Carl nodded. This was something that had been discussed beforehand. Although he wasn't Batman, Owl still had a deep obsession with Gotham. In their agreement, Carl couldn't interfere in Gotham's affairs and had to take the entire city with him when he left the universe. In return, Owl would do everything he could to assist Carl.
“Since this method of exploring cosmic coordinates is feasible, I will bring more coordinates later,” Karl said.
Hearing this, Night Owl frowned and said, "Then you'll have to leave frequently? What if something goes wrong during that time?"
“Your concerns are valid,” Karl said. “So I’ve decided to form an alliance to strengthen our control over the world, in case anything goes wrong while I’m away. I’m also informing the rest of you to come to the Metropolis for a meeting tomorrow.”
Carl knew that although he was very strong, he was still just one person, and sometimes he would inevitably be overwhelmed. So over the years, he tried his best to select a few less bad people from a large group of villains for backup, either to cooperate with or to control directly.
"Boss! Me! I want to join too!" Johnny Quick immediately raised his hand and said when he heard about the formation of an alliance.
"Don't worry, you can't hide from him even if you want to," Karl said. The Speed Force's power is definitely top-tier, and Karl won't let him off the hook. Besides, he didn't form the alliance for people to enjoy, so why would he refuse someone who actively joins?
“Well, that’s all we can do,” Night Owl said helplessly. He quickly edited and sent out more than forty emails, with addresses all over the world, but only three of them were important because Night Owl had personally written those three emails.
“You all have to come tomorrow, after all, it’s a fairly important occasion,” Carl said before leaving Gotham City and returning to Metropolis.
The meeting place agreed upon for tomorrow is naturally the building where he lives. Only the top three floors of this building are his residence, and most of the other floors are vacant. Carl cleared out one floor to use as a meeting room.
Carl didn't hide the cosmic crisis from the thugs who were supposed to be at the party tomorrow. Some believed it, some didn't, but the majority didn't.
Chapter Forty-Four: Taking a Seat
The meeting was scheduled for noon, but people had already arrived very early in the morning.
A person enveloped in a green light rushed toward the floor where Karl was located at an extremely fast speed. The light contained enormous power and was extremely violent.
However, the streak of light stopped just before it touched the building, hovering in front of it without causing any damage.
"Super, Superb, are you there? I'm the One of the Rings. Um, I got the call and came right away. Could you open the door?" A weak and uneasy voice came into the building as the man pleaded with Karl to let him in.
At this moment, Karl was lying on the sofa chatting with his group members to strengthen their relationships while asking about the mission world.
[It's a Qilin, not a Coconut Sheep]: The opening time of mission worlds is not fixed. Sometimes there are two in a month, and sometimes there are none in half a year. In addition to the generous rewards, there are usually some dangers. However, mission worlds can be entered and exited at any time, and there is no penalty for not completing them, which is quite humane.
[Superman]: I see. Thank you for explaining.
[Superman] Uh, sorry, I suddenly have something to do and need to leave for a bit.
[It's a Qilin, not a Coconut Sheep]: It's okay, go quickly, work is very important.
After receiving Gan Yu's understanding, Carl closed the chat group and said to the people outside, "Go through the front door."
Karl then met the visitor in the prepared conference room. The man was dressed in a green and white uniform, wore a green eye patch, and was surrounded by green energy, all of which came from the green ring on his hand.
"Superb, I haven't slacked off in the month you've been gone. I've cleaned up all the troublemakers in Seaside City. So, Superb, do you think it's okay to take off my ring for a while? Please, I really can't take it anymore!" The man pleaded pitifully as soon as he saw Karl.
Karl glanced at the hand with the ring on it, which was covered in bulging veins and swollen beyond recognition. Just looking at it was disgusting. There was no doubt that the ring had brought immense pain to this man who called himself the Ringholder.
However, Carl thought the other party could hold out a little longer, so he said, "Let's talk about it after the meeting, or you can give up the ring, then you'll never have to suffer again."
The ring-wielder seemed to show a fleeting look of excitement, but quickly reverted to his timid self. He clutched the ring and gritted his teeth, saying, "Just, just for a little while, right? It's okay, I can wait, I definitely can!"
Karl knew this would be the outcome. Even though the ring was constantly eroding his body and causing him unbearable pain, the Ringholder would still not give up the ring, because without the ring, he would have to turn back into a weakling that everyone could bully.
It's better to maintain the status quo. I can enjoy the immense power the ring brings, and if I'm obedient, I can occasionally take it off to catch my breath.
Quan Jie found a corner to sit down and silently endured the pain in his arm.
This guy corresponds to the Green Lantern in the main universe, and like Carl, he has similar but different abilities from his counterpart.
In the main universe, Green Lanterns are driven by their willpower to operate their Green Lantern rings. There are many rings, and the chosen Green Lanterns are all people with strong willpower. But in this universe, it is completely the opposite. There is only one ring, which is the Calamity Ring on the hands of the Ringmaster.
This ring has its own consciousness and chooses weak, humble, and indecisive people as its hosts. Moreover, its power does not come from willpower, but from a strange space filled with tentacles.
When the energy in the ring is too low, the Calamity Lamp Ring will forcibly open the entrance to the space to recharge. During this process, the host will experience excruciating pain, and their body will be slowly consumed until their whole body becomes swollen and they die. After that, the ring will go to find a new host and repeat the process.
It was precisely because those who caused trouble with the rings were all people without any willpower that Carl easily subdued the Ringholders to do things for him. And they were quite useful; as long as he occasionally took off the rings, they would do their best to complete the tasks, making them even more worry-free than Johnny Quick.
The Ringholder arrived first because he wanted Karl to help him temporarily remove the ring, and others followed him one after another.
Some people flew in from the sky, some swam in from the sea, and some, lacking these skills, simply took a taxi.
Everyone arrived before noon, and no one was late. Night Owl and Johnny Quick also arrived at the building. Behind Night Owl was a young man, his assistant codenamed Eagle Claw, which corresponds to Robin in the main universe.
The newcomers are mostly second-tier heroes or villains in the main universe, such as Rubber Man, Black Lightning, and Toy Man. They are not very well-known. The most famous of them is Aquaman, who can talk to fish.
Carl only set up a round table in the conference room, which was not enough for all of the dozens of people to sit down. Most of them had to stand on the side to hold the meeting.
Karl sat in the main seat, waiting for the others to take their seats. The requirements for sitting down were simple: one had to be able to control a city by oneself.
Under Karl's deliberate influence, a trend of territorial expansion has become popular among the villains in this world, and many people consider it an honor to have a city of their own, just like Karl.
For Karl, this behavior helped him live a stable life, while for the other villains, it clearly demonstrated their respective strengths, so no one objected.
Night Owl, Johnny Quick, and the newly arrived Ringwright all found seats around the round table. They each controlled Gotham City, Central City, and Seaside City, respectively.
Next, Aquaman found a seat and sat down. As the king of Atlantis, he was undoubtedly qualified.
The remaining people could only look enviously at those around the round table. It wasn't that so many people couldn't control the city, but rather that they still needed to form small groups to maintain their power over the city; being an individual was simply not enough.
Just when everyone thought the matter was settled and the meeting was about to begin, someone suddenly stood up.
"Wait, Superb, although I don't have my own city yet, that's because I only recently gained my abilities. Controlling a city isn't difficult, so I think I deserve a seat too."
The speaker was a burning skeleton named Deathstorm, corresponding to Firestorm, a second-tier hero in the main universe.
Chapter Forty-Five: The Storm of Death
Deathstorm was originally a biology professor named Martin Stein, who was among the top in his field. The authorities hired him to research ways to deal with the growing number of superpowered individuals and provided him with a state-of-the-art laboratory for this purpose.
However, most capable people in this universe have some issues with their personalities, and Professor Stein was no exception. He was obsessed with studying the mysteries of biological death, so he put his work aside and turned his laboratory into his domain for studying death. His research became increasingly in-depth, and he even went so far as to secretly conduct human experiments.
Finally, one day, he went so far as to put himself on the experimental table as well.
Not long ago in the laboratory, he combined his living body with a dead body. Some unknown accident occurred, but the two became completely intertwined in life and death. His body turned into a burning skeleton, but he also gained superpowers and became a supervillain - Deathstorm.
When Death Storm came to attend the gathering, he noticed that all the well-known figures in the underworld had been called over. He keenly sensed that this gathering was definitely not ordinary. In his memory, there had never been such a large gathering of villains before, and only Superman had such a rallying power.
In short, under these circumstances, whoever sits at the round table has a great deal of say in whatever is being decided. He felt he couldn't let this opportunity pass, as there might not be such a large gathering again in the future, so he needed a seat.
However, Death Storm's actions have already angered the crowd. The people present are not good-tempered. Using control of the city to classify people is an acceptable way of speaking, but it is unreasonable for Death Storm to think he can overpower them with just words. How can you know the difference in strength if you don't fight?
"You skull, are you looking down on me?!" Someone immediately attacked, unleashing a burst of multicolored energy that struck the Death Storm, but the Death Storm remained completely unharmed.
Upon closer inspection, it became clear that all of this energy was blocked by a thin barrier just before it touched the death storm.
"That's far too weak. I'm the one who crosses the line between life and death," Death Storm mocked, as he gathered two balls of flame in his palm and hurled them at the man.
The opponent thought it was just ordinary flames, that he had simply created a barrier, and began preparing for his next attack. By the time the flames hit him, it was too late.
The barrier had no effect whatsoever; the person was transformed into a steel sculpture, not burned to charcoal by the flames, but his actual flesh turned into steel.
This is the power of the Death Storm—the ability to rearrange the structure of atoms and subatomic particles—truly a cheat-like power.
However, Deathstorm has its limitations. As a biology professor, he is better at manipulating organic matter and not so good at inorganic matter, which is the opposite of Firestorm in the main universe.
At that moment, Aquaman, who had been sitting in a chair, suddenly picked up his trident, slammed it on the table, and roared, "Enough!"
“Sit down, Aquaman,” Karl said.
So Aquaman, who had just stood up to teach Deathstorm a lesson, suddenly sat down as if nothing had happened. Atlantis had fought Karl before, which made him somewhat afraid of Karl now.
Carl stopped him to protect Aquaman, because Aquaman's fighting ability was somewhat awkward. His physical fitness was neither good nor bad, and his special abilities were only swimming fast and talking to fish. Facing the Death Storm, which was good at manipulating organic matter, the possibility of capsizing was very high.
Karl still needs Aquaman to maintain the stability of the ocean world, and this Aquaman is good. He doesn't plan to change the king of Atlantis for the time being.
