A staff member came out and led Diana to an elevator that was clearly decorated differently from the others.
Picking up Gugu from the ground, Diana followed the staff.
"This is the elevator to the top-floor apartment." The staff member simply led Diana to the elevator door and then stopped. Clearly, it was now Diana's time to herself.
"Thank you." Diana stepped into the elevator.
The elevator went straight to the top floor, the 38th floor.
Watching the elevator ascend floor by floor, I felt a sense of anticipation, like unwrapping a gift. Things I've never seen before always evoke a unique sense of excitement.
But just as Diana was about to see her new home, her brief stop in the living room was enough to draw all eyes to her.
“Hey! Dave!” a young man called out the white manager’s name.
“Welcome, Mr. Tarasov. How may I help you?” the white manager, known as Dave, said to the young man.
“I’d like to know if that woman was a customer of your hotel or a resident?” Tarasov asked Dave in his Russian-accented English.
“Oh, I’m sorry, Mr. Tarasov, we cannot disclose the residents’ information.” Although he didn’t say it explicitly, Dave had essentially handed over Diana’s information to the Russian man.
The problem is, one is the son of a Russian mob boss, and the other is a woman who is also very important to Tony Stark. Otherwise, there is no way to explain why Tony Stark would buy one of the most luxurious apartments in New York for this woman.
“Mr. Tarasov, I suggest…” Dave wanted to say something more, but Tarasov’s words cut him off.
"So, you'll be able to see her here from now on? Is that right?" Tarasov raised an eyebrow at Dave.
At that moment, Diana was enjoying the beautiful view from her penthouse balcony.
"Not bad, isn't it, Gugu?" Gugu jumped into Diana's arms and looked with great interest at the view of Central Park from their new home.
"Meow~"
“It seems you agree,” Diana said with a smile.
Chapter 44 Notice
The cake went to eat someone else's cake today, so the update will be late today, two updates in the evening.
Chapter 45 The High Table Protected by God
The night is deep, the stars are twinkling, and the beautiful scenery will always touch your heart at some point.
Diana was now sitting with her knees drawn up, gazing at the beautiful starry sky. She simply looked at it, not thinking about the safety of the world or whether she should go to work tomorrow. She just wanted to savor this peaceful moment.
Empty your mind, just to immerse yourself in the beautiful scenery; relax yourself, just to feel happy.
Diana stayed on the terrace, watching the moon rise and set, the North Star shining brightly, bringing the first rays of sunlight that pierced the night. She was soaked from the night's dew, but all of this made Diana feel wonderful.
If she hadn't left Paradise Island to verify the memories in her mind, would she still be living on Paradise Island with her mother now? Living a carefree life every day, only occasionally having to listen to her mother's nagging.
Diana tucked a few unruly strands of hair behind her ear, stood up, and stretched.
"Diana, a new day has begun." Diana said to herself, patting her cheeks.
Only then did she realize that her clothes were wet. She smiled easily, turned around and went back to her apartment to take a good shower.
I need to go to work.
Warm water flowed from the showerhead, and the misty steam gradually obscured Diana's graceful figure, revealing glimpses of her elegance in the hazy light.
But all of this was enjoyed by only a little orange cat lying outside the door, guarding Diana.
......
"Bye-bye, Gugu. Remember to eat well." Diana squatted down and patted Gugu's little head before straightening up and leaving the apartment.
"Meow~" Gugu responded to Diana's petting at just the right time.
"Ding!"
Diana originally thought she wouldn't encounter anyone, but to her surprise, a middle-aged man came up after she had just gone down three floors.
"Good morning, beautiful lady." The man tipped his hat to Diana, which made his traditional English suit look somewhat retro and elegant.
"Good morning, sir." Diana smiled gently at him. Apart from his bald head covered by a hat, there was nothing about this man that could attract Diana's attention, so she naturally lost the desire to continue the conversation.
You can't exactly discuss with people how you got your bald head, can you?
The man didn't seem to care; he simply looked at Diana with the gaze of someone admiring a work of art.
She wore black high heels, and a dark red bodycon dress that accentuated her stunning figure without being vulgar. A single silver snakeskin chain adorned her smooth neck. Her chic and aloof makeup enhanced her unique and sophisticated aura.
"Is there anything I can help you with, sir?" Diana hadn't paid attention to the man's gaze at first, but it grew increasingly intense, forcing her to ask if there was anything he needed.
The man showed no embarrassment whatsoever. Instead, he spoke to Diana with a strangely excited tone, "You are perfect, truly. No one in the fashion industry could ignore you. You will be the muse for all fashion designers worldwide!"
“I’m sorry, sir,” Diana said to the man, “I don’t understand what you mean, but I’m very happy with my life now.”
"I'm sorry, I was too abrupt." The man tipped his hat to Diana again. "If you could become a model, you would be the best person in the world, without exception... Sorry, sorry, it's a habit from my past profession." Looking at Diana's indifferent expression, the man realized that he had been talking nonsense. Besides, people who could afford to live here probably wouldn't want to be models.
“It’s alright, sir,” Diana smiled calmly at the man.
"Ding."
Just then, the elevator arrived at the lobby.
Diana smiled at the man and stepped out of the elevator first.
As the man watched Diana leave, he felt a pang of regret; he had forgotten to hand her his business card.
"Maybe next time I come to see Melinda, I'll see if I can run into her again." The man left the elevator with a regretful expression.
On the other side, the doorman, who had already retrieved Diana's car, handed the keys to Diana: "Have a safe trip, ma'am."
"Thank you," Diana said, taking the keys and thanking the doorman.
Diana got into the car, and a BMW pulled up next to hers.
"Hey! Baby! Nice car!" A blond guy stuck his head out of the car window and shouted at Diana.
"Thank you." As she rolled down the car window, Diana politely responded to the golden retriever's compliment, but the word "baby" did make her feel somewhat uncomfortable.
"Oh, come on, baby. Don't be so cold, okay? We just want to be friends with you!" the blond man continued to call out to Diana. If they let this lovely girl leave like this, wouldn't all their preparations have been for nothing?
Moreover, such a sweetheart can afford such a luxury car. As long as they can lure her into the trap they have prepared, all the troubles will be easily resolved.
Diana glanced at the blond man indifferently. The blond man's eyes were filled with unnatural red blood vessels, and his pale face was clearly that he was high on drugs.
"If you've taken something, don't wander around outside. You'll scare the children," Diana said to the golden retriever before closing the car window again.
"Don't eat the pickled radish!!" The golden retriever's expression changed, and he cursed loudly.
But all that responded to him was the exhaust fumes from the McLaren.
Sitting in the car, Diana didn't care about this petty scoundrel at all, mainly because there was no need. If she were to be wary of everyone, she could apply to be Batwoman and become a good partner with that bat.
Unfortunately, she didn't want to be unable to get even eight hours of sleep a day. Although she didn't get any sleep yesterday either, it was still better than not sleeping at all.
The yellow McLaren was like a nimble cheetah, constantly weaving through traffic. It was fortunate that it wasn't far from the Metropolitan Museum of Art; otherwise, with no one watching Diana, she would likely still be constantly testing the limits of speeding.
When Diana arrived at the museum, someone was already waiting for her there.
His shiny bald head, well-tailored black suit, and large face practically screamed that he wasn't a good person.
Unfortunately, many people like to take a photo with this guy.
He was none other than Wilson Fisk, the New York City philanthropist, the 'Kingpin' lurking in the shadows.
"It seems Mr. Fisk is quite popular with the citizens," Diana said, looking at Fisk who was taking another photo with several children.
Fisk moved his massive body over to Diana's side: "You moved out of Brooklyn?"
Diana hadn't expected Fisk to come just for this, so she nodded.
“I was going to call you to tell you, but I think it’s better to explain it to you in person,” Fisk said earnestly, looking at Diana.
"The Plaza Hotel where you're staying now is actually a rather chaotic place, but because it's well-managed, no notable incidents haven't occurred." Fisk couldn't help but show a hint of caution when he spoke of it.
"Can't you manage that area?" Thinking of the little blondie she had met before, Diana realized that the 'Kingpin' in front of her hadn't reached in, or rather, hadn't reached in that deep.
“I can, but there’s a force that’s been entrenched there since before I arrived, and even I can’t easily touch them. Or rather, I’m hoping to get involved.” Fisk shook his head. “So there might be some foolish little guys out there, and I hope you can leave it to me, at least so that too many people aren’t implicated.”
This was the first time Diana had ever seen Fisker with such a serious expression.
"Don't worry, I will. But you should at least tell me what forces make you so cautious."
Fisk looked intently at Diana, as if trying to imprint the way Diana was speaking into his own eyes.
"They claim to be beings protected by God."
"High table."
Chapter 46 Twelve Seats, Four Elemental Gods
“Sounds like someone with a powerful background.” Diana patted Fisk’s arm, gesturing for the two of them to walk and talk.
Fisk did not refuse, and the two began to move along the exhibition area of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
“Tell me all about this so-called high table, preferably everything you know. See if there’s anyone I recognize in there.” Diana suddenly thought of the gold coin from Odin in her hand.
One gold coin is equivalent to one million US dollars, which is not something that just any force can handle.
“Your car was actually a gift from the High Table in a sense, otherwise no one would have sold it to you. After all, you were just a nobody in the underworld.” Fisk stopped, facing a classic oil painting, “The Card Players.”
“It seems to be the organization behind the Continental Hotel as well.” Diana followed Fisker’s gaze and glanced at Cézanne’s painting, “The Card Players.”
“Yes, but they definitely don’t just run assassin organizations.” Fisk crossed his arms and stared intently at the man standing behind the card player. “Like the man with the pipe in this painting, he’s not directly involved, but he knows all the cards. The high table acts as the one observing everyone, but they also play the game.”
Diana did not interrupt Fisker, but simply looked at the painting as well.
"The train of the world doesn't have only one track—civilization. No train can run on just one track. Only when civilization and darkness run simultaneously can the world stay on track. The people on this track have an unexpected obsession with and loyalty to the rules, or rather, they are more loyal to the rules than civilization itself. The will of the ruling class on the dark track is known as the High Table. The members of the High Table formulate and manage the rules for the entire dark track. All dark industries that are not accepted by civilized laws operate under the rules they set. Both tracks are like a precise machine operating according to regulations," Fisk said. "That's why I need to join the High Table. They ensure the normal operation of the dark world. I'm just 'Kingpin' of New York, and I can only be 'Kingpin' of New York now."
Diana started moving around again and no longer stayed there.
Fisk also began to move with Diana, following her like a small mountain.
"So what does this have to do with God?" Although Fisk described the high table as something rather grand, it was still just a human organization after all. Diana was only concerned with whether they had a relationship with Odin or other gods.
“They are hereditary, ever since the High Table appeared,” Fisk told Diana. “Twelve seats, twelve families, each divided among four gods from different regions.”
"Indian gods".
