Section 281, Chapter 19: The Trackers

In the dimly lit room, crimson bloodstains were slowly spreading across the floor.

Kiritsugu Emiya ignored the body that was still struggling in its final moments before death, or convulsing after death, and opened the door to leave.

This is the sixth day since the port was abandoned, and the "hounds" have still not been completely eradicated.

With the cooperation of headquarters and the Sixth Group, both overt and covert, evidence of the Defense Bureau's training of "hunting dogs" was exposed, and the police subsequently detained all those involved.

From the captured high-ranking official of the Bureau, the Sixth Group learned that the leader of "Hounds" consisted of three people: two men and one woman. The men were a B-level martial artist and an A-level magician, while the woman was an A-level psychic. It was said that none of them were particularly strong, but they were good at management and were quite clever. Therefore, they were chosen by the higher-ups to form the "Hounds" team to hinder the growth of the Bureau of Supernatural Abilities.

According to the Bureau's initial plan, the existence of "Hound" would be almost over after the port was abandoned. However, the outcome was that the organization completely broke away from the control of the higher-ups after the operation and became a veritable terrorist organization.

Five days ago, on the morning of that day that shocked the world and is now a day of remembrance, the members of Group Six had hardly had a proper rest.

The team aimed to capture members of "Hound," dismantle the various illicit industries that provided funding for "Hound," and confiscate "Hound's" weapons and ammunition. In just a few days, the members of Team Six traversed almost every corner of the abandoned port, searching every possible hiding place for "Hound" members.

The thorough search and capture operation almost wiped out the lower and middle levels of the "Hounds," but the three most important people they were looking for remained elusive.

It was as if they had vanished into thin air. No matter what methods the sixth group used, they could not obtain even the slightest bit of information about the location of the three leaders of the "Hounds".

Just minutes before, Kiritsugu Emiya had completed questioning and conducting a lie detector test on a mid-level manager of the "Hounds".

The outcome can be considered positive, because Kiritsugu Emiya was finally convinced that the administrator was not lying.

But the result could also be unfavorable, because although the person did not lie, the information he provided was completely meaningless.

"Still not working?"

Outside the door, a woman with short hair asked impatiently.

"There's nothing of value in it."

Kiritsugu Emiya shook his head.

"Those three people are hiding very well; no one knows their exact location now."

The enemy's counter-reconnaissance capabilities are frighteningly strong.

If this is a game of hide-and-seek, then the three leaders of the "hounds" are still deeply hidden in the fog, and the sixth group searching for them has yet to find any clues about them.

"Those three guys are such cowards, they're like turtles hiding in the ground."

Sitting on a chair in the corner, Rin rubbed her dark circles from lack of sleep and complained wearily.

"Could it be that we can't even find anything useful?"

"At least we can still know the name, right?"

After complaining a couple of times, Rin yawned, lifted her right leg onto the chair, reached out and hugged it, pressing her face against it as if she were about to fall asleep like that.

"If it's a name, there's one person whose name is clear."

Kiritsugu Emiya walked to one corner of the room, dragged out a dusty chair, sat down without even bothering to wipe it, and began to recount the information he had gathered over the past few days.

"Of the three known leaders, the one who holds absolute leadership is that A-rank magician. His name is unknown, and his characteristics are unclear. Even when using magic, it is impossible to restore the memories of the person in question to describe his characteristics. Therefore, it is speculated that he has the ability to distort the common sense memories of others. No information about him can be obtained. The only certainty is that he can command the other two, making him the leader among the three, and the de facto supreme leader of the 'Hound'."

"Due to the nature of her abilities, there is not much information about the woman with hypnotic powers, but there is a general description of her appearance. In addition, it can be confirmed that the other two of the three call her 'Number Five,' and she is suspected of taking some kind of psychotropic drug. She follows the orders of the other two and rarely shows herself in front of her subordinates."

Kiritsugu Emiya quickly relayed the information about the first two of the three leaders, and after listening, Rin just sighed and said listlessly, "We still don't know what they're called, do we? Number Five sounds like a code name, it can't possibly be their real name."

"Due to special circumstances, we were unable to obtain much information about the first two people, but we have much more detailed information about the third person."

As he spoke, Kiritsugu Emiya took out a folded piece of white paper from his pocket, on which something appeared to be drawn.

He handed the blank sheet of paper to Rin, who took it with some curiosity, opened it, and found that it was a figure sketch with a slightly distorted human face.

"This is... the appearance of a third person? Who drew this?"

Rin was a little confused. She didn't remember anyone in the sixth group who was good at drawing. Everyone else was the kind of person who only knew how to fight and kill, or use their brains to fight and kill.

“It’s drawn by a believer. She can quickly draw the appearance of the person described by others, and the similarity rate can basically reach 90%.”

Kiritsugu Emiya frowned, somewhat displeased that Rin had asked such a question while discussing information, but he quickly answered her.

"Are believers really that powerful?" Rin said with some surprise, then examined the picture more closely. "So this is the third person."

He clearly has the appearance of a middle-aged man, with average looks, a fierce look in his eyes, and a disdainful smirk at the corner of his mouth, like an extremely self-centered man filled with malice towards everything. His left cheek also has a complex tattoo, adding to his eerie aura.

It must be said that the believer's drawing is quite lifelike; just looking at the painting, Rin could sense how terrifying the person was. Without a doubt, this was an extremely dangerous individual.

"Who is he?"

Rin composed herself and asked Kiritsugu Emiya earnestly.

"There are many Kiharas."

Kiritsugu Emiya said the name of the person the sketch portrait referred to.

"He is 1.78 meters tall and weighs 65 kilograms. He is a Class B martial artist registered in the Special Administrative Region. He started as a street thug and has been involved in several different illegal organizations, but has never been arrested."

"According to the intelligence we have so far, he is in charge of the vast majority of the operations of the 'Hound' organization. This person is quite capable. With only a B-level martial artist, he has managed to control the 'Hound' organization, which has more than thirty A-level experts. He is probably a very troublesome person."

While recounting information about Kihara Kazuta, Emiya Kiritsugu retrieved the sketch, folded it, and put it in his pocket.

“He’s a very experienced old fox, but so far, he’s the only person we have concrete information about.”

Rin raised an eyebrow and stood up from her chair.

"So, the next target is this tattooed guy, right?"

That's right.

Kiritsugu Emiya nodded, then seemed to remember something and looked around with some confusion.

"Speaking of which, where did Cheng go?"

"Huh, is this Senior Li Cheng?" Rin paused for a moment, then looked around. "He doesn't seem to be here."

“Mr. Li Cheng was conducting his investigation alone this morning and did not come here to meet us.”

Finally, a believer reminded them, and the two realized that Li Cheng hadn't come at all today.

……

At the same time, underground in the abandoned port, in an abandoned sewer, two figures were slowly moving forward.

Saying that two people are walking is probably inaccurate. In fact, only one person who looks rather burly is walking forward, while the other, relatively petite figure is actually floating in mid-air, slowly drifting forward.

"This place really stinks."

Zi sat on a crevice, yawning and complaining somewhat unhappily.

"After all, it's a sewer. Even if it hasn't been used for a long time, it will still smell," Li Cheng explained. Then he saw a clump of yellowish-brown feces fall from a pipe not far ahead, landing heavily in the still-dry dirty water in the middle of the sewer.

Well, it seems there are still people using this sewer in the abandoned port.

Zi seemed to be lost in thought and didn't see the somewhat disgusting scene just now. Li Cheng didn't intend to remind her, but he started to pay attention to the scattered pipes around him as they walked, lest he be unexpectedly struck by divine justice and have his mind filled with indescribable thoughts.

Of course, the most important thing is to prevent Zi from encountering that situation.

However, they were probably lucky, because they didn't encounter anything similar afterward, and the odor lessened as they went deeper into the sewer.

The sewers were dark and gloomy, making it difficult to see the path. Zi disliked such a dark environment, so she gently raised her hand, and a purple ball of light bloomed from her hand, illuminating the area around them.

"If we're like this, won't we be discovered if there are enemies?"

Li Cheng hesitated for a moment and said in a low voice.

"We don't care."

However, Zi remained unmoved.

Seeing the girl beside him looking bored, and knowing she wasn't very interested in the "Hound" organization, Li Cheng thought for a moment and offered another suggestion:

"Why don't you go back first, Zi, and I'll call you out when I spot the enemy?"

Anyway, you'll be bored following me, so it's better for you to stay home. Besides, to be honest, Li Cheng didn't really want to engage in a bloody battle in front of her, the kind where brains are practically spilled out.

"So, you mean you can chat happily with that person from beginning to end, while we get bored so quickly with you, Cheng?"

The gaze Zi cast at him seemed unusually piercing.

This...this person is still angry.

"How could that be? It's just that I don't think it's a good idea to leave Zi in such a dirty place."

"We're not some weak human beings who can be pushed over at the slightest provocation. There's no need to be so fussy. Just focus on searching for the enemy."

It seems like we're completely unable to communicate.

Li Cheng reluctantly gave up on persuading Zi to go back and could only continue along the sewer.

The abandoned sewers stretched across the entire ruined port city, an unimaginable expanse. Li Cheng and Zi traversed the abandoned sewers, occasionally using gaps to cross collapsed and crumbling areas. When they reached a point in the sewer network slightly closer to the Tokyo Special District, Li Cheng finally found what he had been searching for all this time.

"It was hidden so well... no, that's not right. Was it mostly destroyed and blown up, leaving only a trace?"

Touching a section of dilapidated and collapsed road, Li Cheng's senses extended, and he clearly saw a man-made road dug out beneath the ruins, which had now been sealed off and was definitely used not long ago.

"It's so deep! It's like a rat hole. Hmph, humans are quite good at digging holes after all."

Zi, standing beside him, also sensed the depth of this sealed passage and was slightly startled.

This long passage must connect to the sewer system in Tokyo.

Many things now make sense. Without the knowledge of the higher-ups in the Bureau, the Hounds smuggled weapons and bombs into the Special Zone through this passage, subsequently causing that series of horrific events. Such a long passage must have required a tremendous amount of manpower to build, and then it was destroyed without hesitation after use. The leader of the Hounds is probably no ordinary person.

Activating the power of the gap once more, Li Cheng traversed the long passage and was greatly surprised when he finally arrived at the other side.

On the other side of the passage is not the sewer system within Tokyo, but rather the abandoned sewer system of what was formerly Tokyo, now a deserted area, outside the special zone.

It's an abandoned district! Are those guys really that cautious?

Li Cheng stepped out from the gap and looked at the dilapidated sewer in front of him, which clearly showed signs of life: several messy beds, which looked like people had been sleeping there just a few hours ago; and places on the walls that were obviously used to store guns and other weapons, but now they were empty.

Li Cheng found a bucket of instant noodles in the trash can. The soup hadn't completely cooled down yet, confirming that the group hadn't been gone for very long.

and many more.

Li Cheng suddenly sensed that something was wrong.
