In addition, there is Bai Ye, a powerful martial artist with a variety of exquisite martial arts or strange abilities, who can directly restrain him. Even Superman, who is known as the "God of the Human World", would never be able to defeat him with an absolute advantage.
Given so many favorable conditions, Bai Ye simply couldn't imagine how Superman could possibly escape this inevitable fate.
His leather shoes tapped rhythmically on the ground as Bai Ye awaited the opportune moment. Soon, supervillains would emerge from the metropolis to cause trouble, and that would be the beginning of their decisive strike plan.
In another routine scene, Atomic Skull clashed with Superman in Metropolis. The outcome was predictable: Superman, using his heat vision, precisely severed Atomic's frontal lobe, rendering him mentally disabled. Whether further surgery or other methods will be needed to repair it depends on the government and courts' decisions.
His dark blue bodysuit accentuated his tall and straight figure, and his chiseled face exuded the heroic spirit of a mature man. His red cape fluttered behind him.
Superman, who used his anti-gravity powers to defy the planet's gravity, was now suspended about fifty meters above the ground. He looked down at the city below, where everyone was cheering for him, as he had once again defeated a supervillain without suffering any casualties. This was an experience he was already used to, and he simply smiled faintly at it.
This boy, born on the Mexican border, smuggled himself and his sister into the United States, where they were adopted by a kind couple on a nearby farm. Under the guidance of his sister and adoptive parents, he developed a set of values that differed from his counterparts in other parallel universes.
Suddenly, a soft sound broke Superman's thoughts. He keenly realized that this was one of the possible behaviors of a superhuman when accumulating power.
"Bai Family Wind Slashing Blade!!!" A loud shout rang out, and several invisible and formless slashes composed of celestial power attacked Superman in mid-air. The slashes, which were faster than sound, tore through the air in front of him in less than half a second.
Superman casually brushed aside these celestial strikes, powerful enough to cleave skyscrapers in two, as if they were nothing more than insignificant ants.
An unstoppable burst of immense force caused the Bai family's wind-slicing blade, formed from celestial power, to be utterly defenseless against Superman's palm and to be easily shattered.
It was still somewhat within expectations. Bai Ye didn't expect this attack to hurt Superman, otherwise he wouldn't have arranged for Haig to stay outside the battlefield.
Under the control of the Celestial Power, Bai Ye's body also floated up using the same principle as pressing down on Newton's coffin lid, and finally stopped at the same height as Superman.
"Are you new here?" Superman wasn't overly surprised; his attitude was very natural, as if he were chatting with a friend. He casually stated a fact that shocked Bai Ye immensely. "Your power and techniques are somewhat similar to the man I met last time. He seems different from you; is he Bai Jinglang from the Origin Terminal?"
"You...this is impossible!" After retreating several meters, before Bai Ye could get away, Superman's figure followed closely behind.
But by the time Bai Ye realized what was happening, Superman's broad hand was already on his neck. The power to shatter mountains, counteract the Earth's rotation, and withstand the weight of a planet could erupt at any moment. The feeling of being so close to death actually calmed him down.
"Why do you believe that the so-called supreme god... or something else, will allow you to descend at the time you wish?" Superman's deep blue eyes held no murderous intent; his attitude was as if he were chatting with a rebellious child.
"Damn it, this isn't what I expected," Haig couldn't help but complain. His finger wasn't on the trigger, and the Gauss sniper rifle wouldn't accidentally fire for that reason. "White Night, don't let me down halfway through."
"Words are useless. I want to experience the power of the Kryptonians." Manipulating the Book of Reincarnation, he retrieved an equipment card, and a gauntlet capable of firing red solar rays appeared in Bai Ye's hand. He staked everything on the next strike.
“No problem, but before that, I want you to see a magic trick.” With a sly smile, Superman’s figure vanished from Bai Ye’s sight.
"Damn it, this can't be!" Bai Ye immediately shouted, yelling through the communication function of the Book of Reincarnation. "Heig, get out of there!"
"At least let me finish this shot first!" In the gaps where time was infinitely split, in the imperceptible moments when a second was divided, Hague muttered to himself.
In his field of vision, a figure that could make the world pale in comparison appeared in the distant sky. The moment he appeared, the world seemed to be reduced to only the deep blue of the ocean and the red that seemed to be offered up.
The other party instantly traversed half a planet's distance, not only seeing through the 'hidden character's' effects but also immediately discovering this place.
"Don't do that, it's not good for you." A faint whisper sounded in his ear, but it did not affect Haig's actions.
The trigger was pulled precisely; there was no need to even aim. Level 5 'Absolute Accuracy' automatically corrected the trajectory and velocity, compensating for the inherent difference between the bullet and the target, allowing the Kryptonite bullet to forcefully hit the Kryptonian whose speed had reached near-light speed.
The power of 'Heaven and Earth Kill' was activated simultaneously, amplifying the effect of the kryptonite bullet hundreds of times to its maximum. It also corrected the trajectory that 'Absolute Accuracy' could not correct, allowing this bullet, like the arrival of death, to accurately hit the heart.
As if his entire being had been shot out with the bullet, Hager fell to the ground. He struggled to lift his head, trying to see the outcome of everything.
Although the Kryptonite bullet caught up with Superman traveling at near-light speed, this did not mean that the bullet itself possessed near-light-speed kinetic energy. Even so, this meticulously crafted bullet still accurately struck Superman's heart.
The power of the Gauss sniper rifle was unleashed at this moment, enough to destroy the terrifying power of the space station far away on the ground. Combined with the Kryptonite bullets, 'Heaven and Earth Kill', and 'Absolute Hit', it created a truly deadly situation.
Superman's indestructible body was as fragile as paper in front of this bullet. Most of his body was blasted away by the kinetic energy, turning into a sky full of blood flowers. The curse magic on the kryptonite bullet also took effect, and the negative energy, enough to make the people of an entire city stop breathing, erupted like a volcano.
“We won… This chapter is over…” Hag couldn’t help but laugh out loud. Now he was just waiting for the Book of Reincarnation to give him a hint.
But even after three seconds, the notification that should have arrived at this point did not appear, and Hague's initial faint joy at what he thought would be a success turned into terror.
"How could this be..." He couldn't finish his sentence. An exaggeratedly large hand grabbed Heg's head, and a terrifying beast stood in front of him.
"It is indeed possible, after I absorb Doomsday." The grotesque bone spikes broke free of the nanotech armor's restraints, and the bluish-gray skin was ominous and terrifying. Superman, who had completely lost his human appearance, spoke calmly.
Most of its body, which had been blasted away, had already been repaired, and even the nano armor had recovered thanks to its built-in repair capabilities.
"Now, I'll perform a magic trick." He flung Hager into the air, the sniper plummeting under gravity. Superman's eyes flashed with a blinding red light, his materialized, high-temperature gaze turning Hager's body to ashes. "This magic trick is called 'Disappearing from the Sky,' and now he's vanished."
Chapter Thirty-Three: An Enemy That Can Never Be Overcome
Lex Luthor is a very interesting character. He's portrayed in many different ways by various writers, but if he exists as the antithesis of Superman… he's inevitably arrogant and conceited, the type who absolutely cannot tolerate defeat. In the timeline of *Red Son*, he's one of the few who can stand against the Red Son, and his reason for fighting to the death isn't for the sake of a democratic America, but because this clone of a country farm boy… actually defeated him in chess!
Although he himself is extremely disgusted by Superman, an alien, interfering in Earth's affairs, in addition to pure hostility, he also believes that 'humanity will become overly dependent on Superman and unable to move forward on its own'... That being said, Lex Luthor himself is an elite, toxic, and authoritarian ruler, which, in a sense, means that the healer cannot heal himself.
The topic had gone a bit off track. Luther's lips twitched slightly after being teased about his baldness by Bai Aina, but he was not one to get angry over something like this. He said, "A deal... well, I need to verify your offer first."
With Luther's intelligence network, he could naturally guess what Baiana could offer as leverage. Most likely, it would be her unique physical cells; the battles in front of Arkham Asylum and Gotham Hospital were all recorded by surveillance cameras and preserved by him.
"Yes, you should know. But this thing should be quite attractive to you, and with your skills, you should be able to analyze it." Without further ado, Bai Aina slowly raised her hand. A vibrant white lily grew from her palm, and then, driven by the power of the perfect creature, the white lily quickly transformed into a palm-sized piece of fish meat, which then rapidly lost its moisture and became dried salted fish.
"This... how did you do that?" Completely incomprehensible. Although it seemed like a simple transformation between plant and animal, Luther knew very well how terrifying that transformation was, its principles far more complex than the complete metamorphosis of insects. As for turning the fish meat into dried fish, that wasn't difficult at all; it just required absorbing moisture.
“To be honest, I can’t really explain it either. It’s just… uh… how should I put it? Most people don’t know how humans walk, but they can walk.” Baina tossed the jerky in her hand to Luther, making a ‘help yourself’ gesture. “My situation is similar. Although I can’t explain the principle, I can just do it.”
“Simply put, it’s the transmission of neural information; to put it more complexly… I doubt you could understand.” Glancing at Baina, Luther took a pair of exquisitely crafted mechanical gloves from the drawer and put them on. Two slender tweezers gently touched the jerky, the blades at the ends slicing it open. “How interesting. Reminds me of the Amorod robots.”
"Are you looking down on me? You're looking down on me!" Bai Aina couldn't possibly fail to read the contempt in Luther's words, and she stood up angrily.
“No, not at all. I haven’t studied your bargaining chips in detail yet, but they are quite valuable. What do you want? Kryptonite? A replica of the orange lamp ring? Or an exoskeleton power armor? As long as it’s not outrageous, I can provide it.” Luther’s businessman side quickly emerged, and he began to talk eloquently, while observing Bai Aina’s reaction out of the corner of his eye.
Why was she completely silent? Did she already know all this? Or did she simply not understand the value of these items? Luther quickly deduced the reason; he had to obtain the girl's cells, as they might cure his sister.
That was one of the few failures in his life that he could not accept. To escape this fact, Luther once considered abandoning his sister and leaving... but he eventually gave up. This failure was like a wound that would never heal, hovering over his heart. No matter how much he licked it, he could not stop the blood from flowing out.
Helping Lena Luthor stand up is one of Lex Luthor's lifelong goals, something he must achieve no matter what.
No matter the cost, it must be done...
"Do you have a Superman clone? You should, right? Others don't, but you definitely do."
Lex Luthor, sitting on the leather sofa, slumped to the side, his forehead nearly hitting the table. He weakly rubbed his forehead with the base of his thumb.
"Thank you for thinking so highly of me, but I didn't." Having regained his composure, Luther put the jerky on the table away in a sealed container and then said, "I did have that thought before, but... heh, it's better not to mention it. Anyway, I won't lie to you, I really didn't."
“How could that be? Others wouldn’t do it, but you couldn’t possibly not do it.” Completely distrustful of Luther’s words, Baina shook her head vigorously.
“Heh, I have no intention of making a fool of myself.” Luther snapped his fingers, and a blonde female secretary handed him a cup of hot black tea and placed it on his desk.
Luthor did indeed have this idea, but countless attempts to challenge Superman had failed, with all his attacks easily neutralized by the opponent. Even using Kryptonite would be detected by Superman's X-ray vision, followed by a heat vision that would burn him away.
Unlike Superman in most works, the Superman that Lex Luthor faces in this world, while retaining humanity, also possesses an arrogance and perspective that transcends humanity.
His self-esteem and pride were trampled upon like never before. To overcome the technical difficulties, Luther even set aside his prejudices and made contact with Darkseid on Apokolips. With both sides getting what they wanted, the scientists on Apokolips and LexCorp worked together and came incredibly close to achieving their goals.
The shared goal was to create clones of Kryptonians and build an army of gods on Earth. While they were hardly allies and might even become enemies—one a champion of human supremacy, the other an evil lord seeking to conquer the universe—no matter how harmonious their cooperation, they would inevitably seek to eliminate each other once it ended.
But Luther and Darkseid are both waiting for the original clone to be completed, and whatever they have to do must wait until then.
But... Luther didn't live to see that day. One day, when he used the Mother Box to open the blast tunnel to Apokolips again, he saw only half of Apokolips remaining, with scalding magma gushing from its shattered core.
If Luther hadn't always worn the exoskeleton armor for space survival on every mission, he probably would have died long ago during that trip to Apokolips. And it was on that day that he met an opponent he could never surpass in his lifetime.
Disheartened, Luthor had no choice but to temporarily abandon all actions against Superman. He then discovered that he was actually doing quite well; Lex Luthor's company was expanding steadily. During an operation to protect his research findings, he developed a good friendship with Captain Cold and decided to hire him as his security captain.
The reason Luthor agreed to the deal with Behaina instead of directly plundering her cells was because he was afraid that she would shout Superman's name and attract his attention.
"Then what about the components of the Amozzo robot? I don't believe you haven't studied them." After thinking for a while, Baina brought up this matter.
“That’s prohibited, it’s not for sale.” Shaking his head, Luther rejected Baina’s offer and instead said tactfully, “If I were to give these to you, this entire building would have to be renovated at a considerable cost.”
The Superman and Lex Luthor in this world are too strange... She couldn't help but mutter to herself. Since she couldn't get her hands on the items that would allow her to grow rapidly, Bai Aina could only sigh and say, "Alright then, I want the Magic Element, Mirakuru Serum, and a mechanical arm. Although there are no documents, I believe you are not the kind of person who would go back on your word."
Chapter Thirty-Four: Please Strive
“Luthor, I’m asking you. If it were you, how would you deal with Gotham City?” Although Luthor didn’t seem like Superman’s archenemy at all, Baiana decided to hear his opinion and see how different it was from her own.
“That place? It depends on how much time we have.” Luther raised his head, then lowered it again. He instructed his blonde secretary to retrieve some items from his lab, while also noticing that Bai Aina was watching him. “Don’t even think about it. My lab isn’t in this building. You’ll probably have to wait a while to get your things.”
"However, after taking such an important bargaining chip from you, all I'm giving you are some worthless things... Well then, I'll just chat with you for a bit. Besides, you've raised an interesting question."
It wasn't just him who wanted to take on Superman; the Dark Knight in Gotham also tried to deal with this god among men, but... the result is self-evident. Without the illusions that humans should have, he was invincible and had no weaknesses whatsoever.
In their search for a way to stop Superman, both Lex Luthor and Batman came up with different ideas. Superman's clones... and Doomsday cells that nearly killed Superman, but these ideas couldn't keep up with the changes.
Because they shared a common enemy, Luthor had some understanding of Batman. He cleared his throat and said, "In a short time, cleaning up that cesspool wouldn't be too difficult. First, we need to purge the major leaders in the bloodiest way possible, then develop our own network to fill the vacant leadership positions. To ensure they don't change their allegiance, we also need to guarantee their loyalty, and then encourage and guide them to go from the underworld to the legitimate business world."
"But that's not easy, is it? Putting aside everything else, just purging those leaders is no easy task." Bai Aina knew that to rise to the rank of a gang leader in a place like Gotham, you needed some tricks up your sleeve. Black Mask, for example, had a special mask that could control minds, and Penguin or Two-Face both had their own hired international mercenaries or well-known supervillains.
“That’s not necessarily true. With sufficient intelligence and targeted action, there’s a very high chance of success. It’s just that the cleanup won’t be easy.” Luther shook his head, raised his coffee cup, and chuckled. “Besides, it’s just a minor injury. Neither you nor I would care about such small problems, would we?”
"However, implementing such a plan would inevitably provoke a counterattack from Batman. He's more troublesome than the Gotham City gangsters. So if it were me, I would choose the second option, which I'm most proficient in."
Perhaps because he was playing something he was good at, Luther's words carried a subtle but undeniable confidence.
"First, I'll expand Lex Enterprises into Gotham City. If that's not allowed, I'll start from scratch. It's just a matter of time for me. However, I won't target military weapons or medical supplies for the company, because those things require staff with certain technical skills."
"What does this mean? It means that even if I become the richest man in Gotham City, I won't be able to boost employment for those at the bottom. That Gotham Knight probably understands this too, but he can't transform the company so easily anymore. After all, Wayne Enterprises was never the type of company that offered jobs to those at the bottom. Although they do charitable work, that's just a temporary solution."
"Normally, solving employment issues should be the responsibility of the government, not a single company. But in a place like Gotham City... well, you can't rely on the government. After all, that place is a melting pot of all sorts of people. It's probably called the Court of Owls, but ultimately, it's just a rat hiding in the sewers."
"But Batman also has it tough. Given his methods and the many restrictions he faces, it's impossible for him to make any effective progress."
Having said so much, Luther, taking a sip of his red tea, looked at Bai Aina, who seemed to be listening to him, and said, "And you? Although I'm not interested in asking about the origin of your abilities, you want to save Gotham City, don't you?"
Every year, every month, every day on this planet, people gain superpowers for various reasons. Luther knows that most of these cases have no research value whatsoever and can be used as a reference. After all, simply getting splashed with a chemical drink and then struck by lightning can grant super speeds exceeding the speed of light; the origin of the ability itself is hardly of any reference value.
Luther also investigated Baina's background, but after failing to confirm when she acquired her abilities, he gave up the investigation.
“Salvation? That's not necessarily true.” Looking at Ichijo, who had remained silent the whole time, Bai Ai Na asked. “So, Ichijo, what are your thoughts?”
"Huh?" Unlike Bai Aina's attitude, Yi Tiao listened intently to Luther's words. Although she had some doubts about her own beliefs, she was very clear that Gotham City's problems weren't entirely about the gang leaders. Simply eliminating them wouldn't save the city, but replacing them with new gang leaders was a different matter...
"I...I don't know..." After hesitating for a long time, she finally gave this answer. After a slight hesitation, she continued, "But I think...the matter of supporting a new gang..."
“It is indeed an unjust act.” With a smile, Bai Aina did not deny one of the points, but instead spoke eloquently. “The second one? It seems that you and I don’t have that much time.”
"..." Not knowing how to answer, she fell silent. After all, she was still a child and was in distress at this moment.
Just as the atmosphere reached an impasse, the blonde secretary pushed open the door again and came in. She carried a small silver briefcase, placed it on Luther's desk, gave a slight bow, and then withdrew.
"Alright, here's what you two wanted." Luther gestured for Bai Aina to take the suitcase, then added, "If you're interested, you can also work for us. The salary is definitely above average, and there's paid leave. Why not consider it?"
“If I weren’t possessed by a ghost, I might actually consider it.” Bai Aina smiled, picked up her silver briefcase, and waved to Yi Tiao. “It’s time to go. Don’t bother Mr. Luther any longer.”
Watching the two girls leave, Luther lowered his voice slightly, then said, "Leonard, Slade was hired by that girl, right? Well, find someone available to stay in Gotham City. Maybe we'll run into something interesting."
