"I'm going to the realm of the gods to see how much intelligence I can gather and how much stronger I can become this time." Abyss opened a spatial rift and prepared to leave. "I'll be right back! Oh, right, Leona, come with me for a bit too. I need you to protect me when my soul leaves my body!"
"Coming!" Leona happily followed.
Chapter 287 Meeting with the Local Deity
After leaving Helheim, Abyss did not return to Hollick's room, but instead went to a safer place—the Druid Gathering, with Maggie by his side.
As for Hollik, Sophia had been listening to his sleep in his room. Hearing that he was sleeping very soundly, she simply sneaked into his room and added something to his mouth to make him sleep even more soundly, basically abandoning his healthy sleep schedule, and he wouldn't wake up anytime soon.
"Wow!" Maggie was sitting on a tree branch eating a wild fruit when Abyss and Leona appeared, and was startled when she suddenly saw the two of them.
Abyss and Leona, facing familiar faces, were not reserved at all and sat side by side next to Maggie.
"It's alright, you can continue eating," Abyss said to Maggie with a smile.
"Who are you? I don't know you!" Maggie looked at the well-built older woman who suddenly appeared in the spatial rift with a wary expression.
Although Abyss is now in her complete form, her appearance hasn't reverted; she still looks like Anita. Furthermore, to perfectly impersonate Anita, her scent is identical, making it impossible for Maggie to recognize her. She didn't run away immediately, only because Leona was nearby.
“Oh, Maggie almost misunderstood.” Leona patted Abyss’s leg and said to Maggie, “This is Abyss. He’s currently infiltrating the Council of the Dead in the Shadowlands, so he’s disguised as a necromancer of the Council of the Dead. He’s planning to have a chat with the Nine Gods and will be astral projection for a while, so he’ll be staying with you for a bit. Are you available now?”
"Hmm?" Maggie was a little taken aback. "Chat with Nine Gods?"
“Yes, I have some questions I’d like to ask the Nine Gods,” Abyss said with a smile.
The smile on Abyss's face was very familiar to Maggie, which helped her to snap out of her guard.
"Talking to the Nine Gods! If word got out, the people in the Holy See would be green with envy! How did you manage to converse with them? Did you need a ticket? Could you say a few words to the God of Nature? Could you ask him to give me some special instruction? I keep making mistakes when I'm learning the Seed Sprouting Magic lately! Oh, speaking of mistakes..."
Maggie was eager to start a conversation with the Abyss when she saw the Abyss suddenly close his eyes and freeze in place.
“He went to the realm of the gods,” Leona whispered to Maggie. “Don’t disturb him.”
Maggie then covered her mouth.
……
The Abyss's desire to speak with the Nine Gods in the realm of the gods was actually quite simple. He only needed to think about what he wanted to discuss with them, and his soul would be automatically summoned to the realm of the gods. Although the Nine Gods could not directly read the Abyss's mind, they could still hear his sincere intentions. These nine serious and capable gods wasted not a moment.
Standing in the realm of the gods, Abyss first looked down at his own body. His soul was still in the form of a mortal, not the form Sheila had observed in Eganda.
“Bellator, you’ve come.” A soft female voice sounded behind Abyss.
Abyss turned around and saw the god of magic, dressed in a mage's robe and holding a wand, standing behind him.
The God of Magic continued, "We've been waiting for you here for a long time, and today you've finally arrived."
"You all knew I was coming to you about these things?" Abis said with a smile. "If that's the case, why didn't you just tell me sooner? You must know some secrets, right?"
Abyss knew that the Nine Gods were aware of his recent activities. It was true that he had infiltrated the Shadowfall, but the concealment magic he used was powered by the Nine Gods. This saved him a lot of trouble, allowing him to talk with the Nine Gods knowing everything.
"We are waiting for the right moment. Some things, if rushed, will backfire." The God of Magic spoke with great patience. "And now, you yourself have touched a corner of your secret, and the time is ripe. Ask your question, and I will answer it."
"Didn't the others come?" Abyss looked over the shoulder of the god of magic and behind Him. "I thought many of you would come."
“The nine of us are of one mind, that’s not a problem.” The God of Magic stood there, showing no emotion. “I can answer all your questions, and if you want things to get a bit more lively, they can come over too.”
"Never mind, I'm here to solve the problem." Abyss waved his hand with a smile. "So, esteemed lady, I really want to know what's going on with the evil god fused into my soul. Why haven't you told me about it all this time?"
The God of Magic nodded slightly and said, "I will explain it to you clearly."
Abyss stood still, listening to the explanation from the God of Magic. Although the Nine Gods were still pursuing their own schemes, they seemed relatively agreeable for now, and Abyss was willing to show a modicum of politeness.
"The evil god on you is called the Lord of Death and Silence. You might be more familiar with his name, Bellator."
“My surname?” Abis blinked, pointing to himself. “I thought it was my master’s surname.”
"Your master, Gerard, wasn't actually surnamed Bellator, but he changed it after you were born," the God of Magic said calmly. "Your name is a combination of your mortal name and the name of the evil god within you. That's why we've always called you Bellator."
"Then, what is the origin of this Lord of Death and Silence...?"
"He initially intended to invade our world as well," the God of Magic stated emotionlessly, as if reading a dry textbook. "You know what he did when he invaded our world—the creation of the Shadowlands. After conquering the Shadowlands, he planned to further invade the main continent, but his attack was thwarted by seven mortal warriors."
It turns out that the Moon Knights not only defeated the invasion of monsters from another world, but also unknowingly thwarted an attack on this world by an evil god.
“But how could the attack of an evil god be so easily defeated by seven warriors?” Abyss tilted his head and asked.
“Because He came to our world very weak, He cannot even directly command His followers—the monsters you saw in the Shadowfall, who have all changed form because of the power of the Lord of the Dead,” said the God of Magic. “After that failed attack, we disobeyed the Creator God’s orders and negotiated with Him—something the Creator God was unaware of.”
The god of magic calmly recounted the "outrageous" things he had done.
Chapter 288 A Surprising Past
Abyss smiled upon hearing this.
He and the Nine Gods were not of one mind; they were merely using each other. The Abyss could see that the Nine Gods did not consider him one of their own and distrusted him greatly. Just as the God of Magic had said, the reason they were unwilling to tell the Abyss the secrets they already knew was not for any other reason than that they did not believe the Abyss could effectively wield the power from the evil gods.
But he was particularly pleased whenever he heard the Nine Gods say that they were going to betray the Creator God's plan, because whenever the Nine Gods expressed their stance, it meant that they intended to give the Abyss some further help.
“Local gods cannot negotiate with extraterrestrial evil gods, nor can they intervene when extraterrestrial evil gods invade. They can only hope that mortals can withstand His attacks on their own. We do not agree with this rule set by the Creator God, therefore, we disobeyed Him.” The God of Magic said calmly, “We met with the Lord of Death, who was already extremely weak, and had a conversation with Him. Our proposal was to ask Him to give His power to mortals.”
“Shouldn’t an evil god agree to such a request so easily?” Abyss asked.
“That’s natural. Gods have their place, and mortals have theirs. The difference in status between the two should not be confused. This isn’t a matter of dignity, but rather the natural order that should exist.” The God of Magic nodded slightly. “The Lord of Death initially disagreed, but we made a promise to Him—we would allow mortals to use His power where it should be used. He eventually agreed, which was expected, because during our conversations we learned that the Lord of Death harbored a natural hostility towards the Creator God.”
"How did they manage that?" Abyss asked curiously. "And where exactly does 'use' refer to? Overthrowing the creator god?"
"You are where this power should be used." The God of Magic stretched out a hand, pointing his long fingers at the Abyss, and said to him, "You should be very familiar with your mortal church, shouldn't you?"
“Yes, I’m very familiar with it. I have a relative who works in the Vatican, and I was involved in the previous changes within the Vatican.” Abistan nodded readily and replied, “What is the connection between the Vatican and the power of this evil god?”
“The Papacy was established by us mortals,” said the God of Magic. “It is not a group formed spontaneously by you mortals, even though it now appears to be a power-hungry interest group.”
"So... it's your tool for influencing the mortal world?" Abyss raised an eyebrow.
The mortals' faith in the nine gods actually began very early. At that time, people simply worshipped these nine deities who ruled the world spontaneously. However, two thousand years ago, the Minia Empire was established, coinciding with the eve of the continent's transition from a slave society to a feudal society. A group of powerful and influential individuals declared the establishment of an organization called the Papacy. Their influence immediately made the Papacy a powerful force on the continent. Using a combination of violence and peace, they seized control of the entire continent's faith within just a few years.
This story was originally well-known to the people of the mainland and taken for granted; no one would think about the details. But now, upon hearing the words of the God of Magic, the Abyss noticed a small detail about the establishment of the Papacy that he knew—the reason why the Papacy was invincible was because they had mastered something that no one else had before: divine magic.
"Yes, we established the Holy See to gather the power of those who believe in us on the continent and turn it into our weapon. Before you, many people coveted the power of the Lord of Death, because the power of an evil god instinctively attracts mortals to pursue it—but no one has been able to successfully obtain the power of the Lord of Death, because we are secretly manipulating it."
Abyss had never imagined that someone before his master had attempted to wield the power of the Lord of Death and Silence.
"So, you're saying you'll prevent mortals from taking the power of the Lord of Death and using it for personal purposes?" Abyss understood the God of Magic's meaning and said, "Mortals acquire the power of evil gods mostly out of greed or jealousy, but my master is different from them?"
"Yes, this truth may be cruel to you, a mortal—you are the product of your master's experiments. Your master wanted to create a powerful mage to bring the necromancy school back on track, and before that, he failed many times." The God of Magic slowed his speech, and only after seeing that the Abyss's expression had not changed did He continue, "Several infants died at his hands. The master you have always respected so much was not as good as you think. He violated the creed of necromancers and also violated the basic morality of being human."
Abyss remained silent, but he eventually nodded and accepted the fact.
"It seems your mentality is quite strong." The God of Magic paused, then returned to the main topic. "Your master's experiments ultimately created you. Did you know that your father and mother were both undead? Your master didn't pass on all his research findings; he also made it possible for the undead to reproduce. And you are the son of two outstanding ancient mages. This was originally a disruptive thing, but we didn't stop it, and now it turns out that our ideas were largely correct."
The truth was truly astonishing. Abis never imagined that his master had been hiding the fact that his parents were two people who had died long ago.
"The bloodline of ancient mages, combined with the sage's blood left by the descendants of transmigrators, and the powerful strength from the Lord of the Dead, ultimately formed you. Your master entrusted you with the task of purifying the Necromancer school, while the Lord of the Dead, who merged into your soul, entrusted you with the task of rebelling against the Creator God. These beliefs, along with your master's teachings, constitute your current personality." The God of Magic spoke, raising his staff and pointing it at the Abyss. The Abyss immediately noticed that its soul's appearance began to metallicize, developing a silver skin with a metallic sheen—a characteristic of the Lord of the Dead.
Abyss examined himself, and even as calm as he was, he didn't know what to say.
"Abyss Bellator, you possess power far greater than you currently display." The voice of the God of Magic grew majestic. "We are gambling with you, and the stakes are the survival of the world of Hay-Tver. Your path was ordained at the time of your birth, but how you choose to walk it is up to you."
After saying this, the God of Magic took out a shining orb of light from his robes.
"This is something left to you by the Lord of Death and your master. Would you like to take a look?"
Chapter 289 Silver Experience
Abyss looked at the god of magic, stepped forward, and reached out to grab the glowing orb that He was holding.
A warm feeling came from my hands. The Abyss was now a spirit, so this was not a real temperature, but a feeling of my soul being immersed in it.
"What is this?" Abyss asked.
“An experience,” the God of Magic said. “Back then, when the Lord of Death was extremely weak, he gave up guiding his followers to expand. Without food, he fell into a deep slumber. Later, your master found him and, before merging into your soul, he sought help from your master and entrusted this thing to us.”
As a deity, the God of Magic is not limited to matter; therefore, He can easily hand over a "concept" to the Abyss. This is something the Abyss could not obtain from mortals.
"So, this was an experience of possessing the power of an evil god?" Abyss asked, looking at the god of magic.
“Yes, let me show you what it will be like when you restore the power to the Lord of Death.” The God of Magic spoke to Abyss without any hesitation.
The Nine Gods now seem to trust the Abyss more, which is why they entrusted these secrets and such things to it. This is a significant step forward in the relationship between the two sides.
It's worth noting that during their first meeting, the Nine Gods intended to place a shackle on the Abyss's soul to prevent him from doing anything detrimental to the world. Now, however, they are even willing to let the Abyss know the truth of the past and experience what it's like to be a god.
"Feel this experience with your heart," said the God of Magic. "You are now qualified to experience what it's like to be a god."
Abyss nodded, focusing his attention on the ball of light in his hand.
As his attention focused, the warmth emanating from the sphere of light gradually increased, and soon, Abyss felt himself hovering above the continent, looking down at his familiar homeland.
His body had now turned silver-white, which was the appearance of the Lord of Death.
"This is not the real Hale Tver, but the one you remember. You can test your abilities here to your heart's content." The voice of the God of Magic rang in his ears. Abyss could still hear His words in this "experience." "After a while, this experience will end automatically, and then you can return to the realm of the gods."
“Okay,” Abys replied briefly.
He's become too lazy to talk now, which seems to be a characteristic brought to him by the Lord of Deathly Silence. The Lord of Deathly Silence always feels a sense of weariness no matter what he does, which is true to his title. He's always lifeless.
"Of course, you are now in the state of having successfully descended into the mortal world," the God of Magic added. "It is the final form of your activated power, not something you would have become after activating the power of the Lord of Death. You should know that it is very difficult for an evil god to descend into a world that does not belong to him."
"clear."
Abyss responded as it flew downwards.
His first destination was the Shadowlands, where the followers of the Lord of the Dead and the necromancers of the Council of the Dead lived. Abyss felt that this should be his first stop.
The feeling of becoming an evil god was strange. First of all, time seemed to lose its meaning for him. Abyss could feel that he was eternal, and that as long as the world existed, he could retain this power forever.
Everything seemed insignificant in his eyes. The Lord of Delusion, whom he once had to be wary of, was now no different from an ordinary opponent, while the Council of the Dead, which he once had to think twice about, was now as insignificant as ants.
His senses were expanded to an infinite degree. As long as he focused his attention, he could sense what was happening in the entirety of Hay-Tver, even down to the chemical reaction of decaying leaves in some unknown corner. Abyss finally understood from the perspective of the Nine Gods as they observed his actions on the continent.
Somewhat contrary to expectations, after becoming a god, the Abyss did not feel an overflowing power. The divine power was now contained within his body, and everything felt so natural, without any discomfort. This was perhaps the advantage brought about by the fact that the Abyss's soul had been fused with the Lord of the Dead since birth—his compatibility with the Lord of the Dead's divine power had reached one hundred percent.
In the blink of an eye, the Abyss had arrived at the Fallen Lands of Shadows.
He landed amidst a group of shadow demons who had been resting. Upon seeing the Abyss, they all knelt down—regardless of what kind of legs they had, they lay obediently prone in a posture closest to kneeling.
