It turned out that the boy wasn't someone the Council of the Dead had captured from the continent at all. In his memory, he lived in a large house on this continent—the Shadowfall. In this house, there were many children his age, all managed by mysterious figures dressed in mage robes. They received daily education, learning basic language, common sense, and manual labor.

These mysterious figures who managed them were called "shepherds." They oversaw the children's daily lives, supervised their chores, and punished disobedient children according to certain rules—sometimes by whipping, sometimes by confinement, and sometimes by sending them away. The children didn't know where those who were sent away went, but they knew it was certainly not a good place.

According to the boy's memory, he was only four years old. This doesn't quite match his appearance—judging by his looks, the boy was at least sixteen or seventeen.

“We eat the same food every day, some of which is delicious but tastes like a strange paste,” the boy said. “Then we have to drink a green, sour-tasting water. The ‘shepherds’ require everyone to eat the food and drink the green water. Anyone who doesn’t obey gets beaten up.”

Abyss and Sophia exchanged bewildered glances, never imagining that the Council of the Dead had gone to such a depraved degree.

The situation is self-evident—the Council of the Dead is keeping humans under its control.

They used people captured from the mainland as seed, systematically breeding them to produce offspring, and then sent these babies to specific places to live. The children were fed a nutritional paste and a magic potion that would make them grow rapidly.

These children, who can grow to the point of being able to work within three or four years, will work as slaves for the Council of the Dead, and will also be sent to various necromancers as test subjects according to the Council of the Dead's needs.

"Just how many slaves does the Council of the Dead keep?" Sophia was greatly shocked.

“There must be a lot. After all, peripheral members can reliably obtain test subjects. How many did those two confess to? Six a year, and they can get more through trading... They not only abandoned the necromancer's creed, but they also put the creed on the ground and stomped on it.” Abyss’s gaze was somewhat cold.

Chapter 271 Being Treated as a God

The human ranch was something Anita and Spin didn't care about, but it was certainly no secret within the Council of the Dead.

To secure a stable and cheap supply of slaves, the Council of the Dead no longer abducted people from the continent, but instead kept them in the Shadowfall to reproduce and serve their purposes. This practice deeply abhorred Abyss and Sophia. Abyss quickly informed Rebecca and the others of this, and even a highly rational person like Rebecca was shocked by the Council of the Dead's horrific methods.

“We have to rescue these people. I originally thought there weren’t many ordinary people in the Shadowfall, after all, the Council of the Dead has very limited influence on the continent. But now I know that there are tens of thousands of people waiting for us to rescue them.” Abyss said solemnly to his followers. “This matter has been added to my plan.”

“I will also try my best to find the relevant facilities of the Council of the Dead,” Rebecca replied immediately. “Everyone is very angry right now. Leona wants to storm into the highest meeting of the Council of the Dead and beat all their senior members to a pulp.”

"Do you know where the house you used to live in is?" Abyss asked the boy.

The boy shook his head: "I don't know. I was working too slowly before, so they gave me some really hard-tasting medicine. When I woke up, you had already brought me here. Are you really going to let me go now? Won't you use me for experiments?"

“Of course not. I’m going to send you somewhere where you can live, and no shepherds will bully you anymore.” Abyss thought for a moment and said to the boy, “Also, let me tell you something secretly. I’m not actually the same person I was before. I’m just pretending to be her now.”

"really?"

The boy was still somewhat naive, and the Abyss didn't blame him. After all, he was only four years old in real life; the Council of the Dead had simply used special educational methods and potions to forcibly raise his intelligence and physical abilities to the level of a teenager.

After implementing a series of covert measures, including divine magic, the Abyss sent the boy to Helheim. Upon receiving the Abyss's notification, the undead of Helheim had already arranged accommodation for the boy and begun developing a new city to accommodate the thousands upon thousands of homeless slaves born in the Shadowlands who would follow.

Even if these people were sent to the mainland, they would not be able to live a normal life. Abis felt it would be better to arrange for them to live in Helheim.

After sending the boy away, the man who had been roasted over the fire also woke up. Abyss and Sophia learned through questioning that the man was actually only seven or eight years old. He lived in a different building than the boy, had a different number, and mainly did manual labor—the boy's labor usually involved tending to medicinal herbs and preparing potions.

"Do you know where your big house is?" Abyss asked the man as well.

The man was a little older than the boy from before, and his mind had matured somewhat under the "shepherd's" encouragement. He thought for a moment and told the Abyss, "I don't know the exact location of that big house, but I do know that people like us are imprisoned in several different big houses, which are not together and are underground. No one who can leave the big house will ever come back."

“Hmm, the Council of the Dead is still doing a great job keeping things secret.” Abyss sighed. Even though he was no longer under Hollick’s surveillance, he was still acting, his demeanor and movements exactly the same as Anita’s.

"Are you a god?" the man asked at that moment.

Abyss shook his head: "I'm not a god, why are you asking this?"

“You saved me from death, and I believe you are God,” the man said earnestly. “The shepherds told us that we are merely slaves, and no one but God can remove us from our predicament. Are you the God the shepherds spoke of?”

Abis blinked. He noticed that the man's gaze now seemed to hold a hint of reverence. He seemed to genuinely worship him as a god.

This made Abyss a little uncomfortable. Gods were his enemies, and now he was being worshipped as a god. It felt strange.

“I am not a god, you can think of me as your landlord,” Abyss said. “I can provide you with lodging, that’s what a landlord is.”

"Landlord God!" The man selectively listened to part of what the Abyss said, then knelt down and kowtowed to the Abyss. "Landlord God, you have saved me from suffering!"

“I’ve already told you I’m not a god. I’m sending you to my territory now. Live well there. You still have a lot to learn.” Abyss felt he couldn’t handle this rescued man who worshipped him so wholeheartedly, so he opened a crack and let the man in.

The man thanked them profusely as he entered Helheim, where he was also taken to a temporary residence by the people in charge of receiving him.

Although the inhabitants of Eternal Night City were all undead, it shouldn't be too difficult for them to teach two living slaves how to live like free people, so Abyss confidently entrusted the work to them.

“If I encountered someone like that in my despair, I might even regard him as a god,” Sophia said with emotion, watching the spatial rift gradually close. “It’s hard to imagine that they never had freedom from birth to death.”

“You elves didn’t experience the era of slavery, so it’s hard for you to imagine such a thing, but we humans really did treat some of our fellow humans this way many years ago,” the Abyss said with a sigh. “But your words have reminded me that I should think of a way to stop them from worshipping me as a god. I’m rebelling against the gods who control the fate of mortals, so how can I become a god myself?”

“Yes, that’s right.” Sophia nodded. “Now we just wait to go to that necromancer’s exchange tomorrow, right?”

“Yes, I need to get more information from the exchange; maybe I can even cause some trouble for the Council of the Dead,” Abyss nodded.

"Then...should we continue acting?"

“Yes, I don’t plan to maintain this illusion indefinitely. Once we start, we’ll be the same senior and junior siblings again,” Abyss nodded and said.

Upon hearing this news, Sofia seemed very excited: "Then...then shall we begin the performance?"

"Hmm? What are you planning to do?" Abis tilted his head.

Chapter 272 Soul Anti-counterfeiting Method

The interrogators in Helheim had extracted most of the information from Spin and Anita, and the Abyss also obtained more information about the Council of the Dead.

The Council of the Dead is divided into several levels, the highest being the Three Venerables. These three individuals have held their positions since the Council's inception and remain unchanged to this day: Chief Mage Haines, Chief Array Master Malinks, and Chief Alchemist Deldor. These three are ancient monsters who have lived for over a thousand years, possessing unfathomable strength and shrouded in mystery. This is evident in their ability to transform the dangerous and corrupted Shadowlands into their own territory and achieve self-sufficiency.

Below the Three Venerables is the Council of Elders, which has seven seats. The seven elders are second only to the Three Venerables and have a very high level of authority.

Then there is the High Council, with a total of thirty-two seats. The seven elders are elected from within the High Council. The entry requirement for the High Council is a ninth-level mage; those whose strength is below this level are not qualified to become high council members.

Next is the Intermediate Council, with one hundred seats. Becoming an Intermediate Council member is relatively easier; this position doesn't require a mage's rank, but rather emphasizes their abilities. As long as you have demonstrable achievements—battle records, merits, or research results—you can apply to join the Intermediate Council, which will then vote on your membership. Of course, if the Intermediate Council is full, you might have to kill one of them to create a vacancy.

The Council of the Dead does not allow members of intermediate rank and above to engage in private duels; violators will face demotion. However, duels can be requested, and killing an opponent in a duel will not incur punishment.

Spencer and Anita's mentor, Hollick, is a member of the Intermediate Council. He has made significant contributions to the new necromancer school, the Soul Stealing School, and holds a secure position in the Intermediate Council. However, his current strength has not yet reached the ninth rank, and his achievements are not quite sufficient to qualify him for a place in the Senior Council.

Abyss originally planned to kill Holick as well and use his identity to further infiltrate the Council of the Dead. However, through the information revealed by Spin, Abyss learned about a special method of the Council of the Dead: soul anti-counterfeiting.

In simple terms, the souls of mid-level and higher-ranking councilors are registered, and their soul information needs to be verified when entering certain authorized locations. Special personnel verify this information at the entrance; they don't need to know the visitor's name or identity, only whether their soul has been registered at the corresponding level.

This soul-detection technology is quite effective. You might be able to impersonate a member of the Council of the Dead, and you can disguise yourself, but you can't change your own soul to fool the Council's "high-tech" soul detector. Of course, killing the person and taking their soul for testing won't work either, as the soul detector can only detect souls within the body.

This anti-counterfeiting measure allowed Holick to escape temporarily. Abyss doesn't want to take action against him yet; he needs to figure out a way to fool the Soul Detector first.

Tomorrow, Hollik will lead his two disciples to a nearby exchange. Although his disciples don't have the necessary permissions, the exchange has different rules due to its special nature, and as their master, he has the right to take them in. This is their weekly procurement activity; Hollik will use some of his own products to exchange for slaves and necessary materials. Spin and Anita will do the same.

Abyss was looking forward to going to the stock exchange with Hollick, as he was very interested in the soul detectors there and wanted to study them.

At the same time, he was also eager to study Hollick's research findings. The Soul Reaper school of magic was very attractive to the Abyss.

Abyss and Sofia are currently in Anita's room.

"I originally thought I wouldn't have to act, but I didn't expect that I would actually have to play the whole part now." Abis looked at Sophia, smiled helplessly, and said to her in the shared mind.

Sophia replied earnestly in the shared thought process: "At first, I just thought... I thought I should go all the way with the act, and I didn't expect that Hollick would be into this kind of thing. Um... it wasn't because I wanted to do this, really, I only acted with you because I felt it was necessary. I've always been a pretty upright person..."

Sophia's soul was trembling like a potion-powered engine; clearly, she wasn't telling the truth, but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing.

Abis simply chuckled softly, then spoke:

"Oh, darling, kiss my shoulder again with your hot lips."

“You clingy little devil, let me see the results of your recent skincare routine,” Sophia added.

"Oh, darling, it tickles so much, but I love it..."

Right outside Anita's room, a small figure stood quietly. This was Hollik, the master of the two siblings.

Although he didn't make a sound, he was panting heavily, and a sickly red flush appeared on his pale, wrinkled face. If he hadn't erected a one-way soundproof barrier around himself, his breathing in the basement would probably have been heard above ground.

This was something Anita and Spence didn't know before; Hollick would eavesdrop on their conversations outside the door every day.

When Abis and Sophia first entered the room, they didn't intend to do anything; they were just pretending to be together. However, after a while, Sophia suddenly sensed someone approaching from outside the door. This person was none other than Hollik. He walked confidently to the door of his senior and junior siblings, but instead of going in or knocking, he stood outside, setting up a one-way soundproof barrier, and then remained there.

Abyss and Sophia immediately guessed what the old man was up to; he had come specifically to eavesdrop on Anita and Spence's intimate moments. They hadn't expected the old man to have such tastes. Both Abyss and Sophia could sense the situation outside, and they could clearly see the perverted expression on Hollick's face.

Since they were going for the thrill, they decided to go all the way. Abis and Sofia immediately began a new round of acting.

"These two little brats are having such a romantic time today...hehehe...it's so much fun, I really hit the jackpot..." Hollick was completely unaware that the two people inside were just putting on an act for him, and he was so excited that he was drooling.

Chapter 273 The Cheesy Thief

“Oh, my dear Spencer, your chest is so warm…”

"Ah, my dear Anita, your face is so beautiful..."

Abyss and Sophia got more and more into their performance. Although they were only trying to fool the old necromancer outside who was wiping the drool off his face with a handkerchief, it was actually quite fun. Both of them were young at heart and took the opportunity to have some fun.

The sweet nothings spoken by Abyss and Sophia grew increasingly cheesy, but Hollik outside was thoroughly enjoying them.

"These two little brats usually say some cheesy things, but today is the cheesiest day yet. Just thinking about two healthy young people talking about love here makes my mouth water... my mouth water..." Hollick was outside, holding his staff with both hands, because he was so happy that he could hardly stand.

This was his perverse hobby; he loved watching young people be intimate. He used to force slaves to do this, but after he had disciples—and these two disciples happened to be a couple—he no longer needed unwilling slaves to satisfy his desires. These two young people, who had been together since childhood, would do this every day, all lovey-dovey, and the closer their relationship, the more excited Hollik became.

"Yes, more passionate, more cheesy, more disgusting... Why are they acting like this today? Is it because I scolded them as soon as I got back? Looks like I'll have to scold them more often." Hollick was completely immersed in happiness.

"Oh, my dear Spencer, it itches so much..."

While scratching his side with his fingers, Abyss spoke in Anita's tone, saying to Sophia through the shared mind, "Sophia, I suddenly have an idea."

"What are you thinking?" Sophia was having a great time acting when she suddenly heard Abyss's voice in the mind-sharing system. She looked at Abyss curiously.

“According to Anita and Spin’s confessions, Hollick strictly forbids the two of them from entering his room, which is said to contain a lot of his research findings,” Abis said. “How about we put on an act to distract him while we secretly sneak some of his research findings back?”

"You can do that? Send someone else? Your men?" Sophia couldn't understand what Abyss was planning.

“Here’s the thing, we’ll take turns going. We both have excellent memories. Once we’re there, we’ll try to remember as much of the research findings as possible in his room, and then share them back using necromancy, making two copies,” Abyss explained. “I can use divine magic to shield our magical fluctuations, and then use polymorph magic to create a hole in the wall.”

Sofia suddenly understood and nodded: "I think it's a good idea!"

“Then, why don’t you go and take a look at his room first?” Abis gave Sophia a thumbs up, then raised his voice and exclaimed loudly.

"Oh! Spencer! Let me feel your burning love! I can't live a second without you! Without you, I'm afraid I'll wither like a flower! Yes! That's it!"

This aria was incredibly cheesy, but it was exactly what Anita would do—despite her eccentricities, she truly loved Spence, and her limited literary talent only surfaced during their intimate moments. Spence, on the other hand, only outwardly loved Anita; in reality, it was merely because Anita was beautiful, and he happened to be a womanizer.

Hollick, who was outside, couldn't contain himself upon hearing that sound. He was sweating profusely, his legs trembling as if he were about to collapse. His face was filled with satisfaction.

While the old necromancer was enjoying himself, Sophia began to act.
