Chapter Twenty-Seven: Suffering in Progress
The once bustling square returned to its busy state after the deaths of the two intruders, as if everything that had happened before had been reset.
Some villagers noticed that the monsters they were feeding seemed to have gotten fatter at some unknown point in time—was it just an illusion?
However, this reflection was quickly ended by the sound of gunfire.
The one hit by the magic bullet was a mentor. After being struck in the head, she leaned back dramatically. Her obese body seemed to lose its balance from the impact. If Ash had been nearby, they would have gladly given her an execution.
Xiaoyan can only silently memorize the information that a pistol can also reveal weaknesses, and wait for her mentor to recover and guide the foolish villagers into the trap of the "cannibalistic wooden house".
As expected, the mentor did not disappoint her. After the fat man regained his footing, he immediately looked up and saw Xiao Yan on the second-floor balcony of the wooden house. He pointed his staff at Xiao Yan and the surrounding villagers, after a moment of surprise, immediately picked up their weapons and surrounded the wooden house.
Great, the fish has taken the bait.
Having attracted the enemy's hatred, Little Flame immediately retreated back into the wooden house, also managing to avoid several swarms of insects that had been following her.
These miracles exploded on the balcony, leaving pools of blood, and the villagers' nightmare had only just begun.
The slaves on the first floor of the cabin had already been cleared out. This time, they carefully avoided the mummies hanging all over the ceiling, turning the place into a dark and complex ambush site.
The first group of fearless villagers charged into the gaping maw of the cannibalistic wooden house, only to be devoured by sharp blades hidden behind the teeth-like mummies.
Darkness is the same for all creatures that lack night vision.
In the dim light, the villagers obviously couldn't see very well. They used their weapons to pry open the mummies one by one, searching as they moved forward through the stairwell.
Suddenly, a villager pried open the mummy and seemed to see a flash of light. Before he could see what it was, he collapsed in a pool of blood.
With its sharp teeth, it began to tear and bite at the food that had entered the tiger's mouth.
Hidden among the mummies, with the aid of her magical eyes, she could always approach the villagers entering the wooden houses from the most concealed places. Each time her sword was drawn, the light that flashed would take away a humble life.
The villagers finally realized something was wrong; one of their companions would collapse unconscious after the flash of light.
They instinctively abandoned their plan to go upstairs and gathered around the spot where the light had appeared.
More villagers poured in, sifted through by the hanging mummies like a sieve, densely distributed throughout the first-floor space. And weaver carried out the slaughter systematically among these evenly distributed villagers.
The villagers in the front row were killed, and then the people in the back row poured in; the people in the back row were killed, and then the people in the even further back row poured in.
The villagers didn't even have a chance to brandish their weapons, because they had no idea whether the person next to them was a fellow villager or a murderer who had taken their lives.
Finally, the instructors waiting outside grew impatient and ordered several burly executioners to push through the crowd and rush in.
The silent and efficient harvest was disrupted. The ruthless executioners didn't care whether there were villagers around or not; they simply waved their guillotines and swept away anything that stood in their way.
boom! ——
The purple gunfire was dazzling in the darkness, but as soon as the executioner looked up at the spot where the gunfire was flashing, the purple magic bullet had already pierced his head.
The impact of the magic bullet caused his massive body to arch backward uncontrollably, but even more deadly was the sudden flash of blood that streaked across his face.
Execution! Bleeding!
His life was slipping away so quickly that before he could regain his balance, the katana that had been severely damaged was struck out again.
The heavy thud of the executioner falling to the ground attracted the attention of two other burly men who had entered the room. They stopped blindly wielding the guillotine and continued their pointless work of clearing out the villagers, a task they performed even faster than cleaning a mummy.
They carefully surrounded the body, one on the left and one on the right.
The purple flash of gunfire passed again, and one of the executioners was knocked into a stagger by the gunshot, but the other man swung his guillotine at the spot where he was most likely to be ambushed.
The flash of the katana, still in the manner of execution, pierced the executioner who had been knocked into a daze.
Zhi paid no attention to the guillotine that was heading straight for her.
Because a figure, carrying a long sword, was descending from the roof beam, slashing straight at the executioner.
Blood splattered from both executioners at the same time.
One of them tragically lost his life, while the other, caught in the impact of the falling slash, lost his best opportunity to strike.
The surviving executioner turned around angrily, but there was no trace of him where the falling slash had struck.
He furiously swung the guillotine horizontally, but apart from a few innocent villagers, he didn't even touch the shadow of the enemy.
A purple flash of gunfire appeared from another location, and the enraged executioner staggered as the gleaming blade magnified in his eyes.
Ring ring—!
Suddenly, a pleasant ringtone abruptly entered everyone's minds.
The executioner, who had been struck and bled, actually gripped the katana tightly.
"Hey, what the heck is this? I've never heard of a monster being able to transform twice!"
Even the silent and deadly killer couldn't help but utter a sound of surprise, for the executioner's eyes were now bloodshot, his entire outline faintly glowing with blood, and his body, which should have been stiffened by the beating, was still able to raise the guillotine even as he was about to be executed.
boom!--
The pitiful walls of the wooden hut were smashed open by the instructor's staff. Their equally reddened eyes and bloodshot outlines brought an extremely dangerous crisis with their mere appearance.
Just as the guillotine was about to fall on Zhi, Xiao Yan caught up with a downward slash, ending his remaining life.
"Get out of this house now, or it will become a 'grave of ashes'!"
The smashed wall swept away the darkness in the wooden house, and the three mentors who rushed in chanted incantations loudly. The flames that engulfed their bodies illuminated the despicable strangers.
Knowing their plan had been ruined, the two didn't linger. As the monster, a mixture of corpses and monsters, emerged from outside the cabin, they immediately climbed the stairs and jumped off the second-floor balcony.
"Wait, wait, wait! Why are there still so many villagers left outside?!"
Zhi, who had just landed, immediately exclaimed in surprise, her words even becoming somewhat incoherent due to the unexpected nature of the situation.
These are not just villagers. Xiao Yan saw three burly figures mixed in with these villagers whose bodies were covered in blood.
Even in their eyes, there remained the anger of being tricked to death.
Ring ring—!
The bells continued to ring, and this time they finally saw clearly what the culprit that had caused their failure looked like.
This is a woman completely covered in a cloak, but the patterns tattooed on the cloak have an odd feel that doesn't quite fit with the world of fire and flame; they are more intricate and mysterious.
She held an old bell in her hand, from which the clear, crisp sound emanated. However, contrary to the crispness of the sound, it caused a strange phenomenon that horrified the two ashes.
One by one, crimson halos spread across the ground, and the enemies who should have been sent to wait for their next resurrection stood up one by one from within the halos.
The walls of the cabin groaned once more, and the berserk mentor, along with the fused corpse monster, slowly surrounded it as it collapsed.
"Xiao Yan, it seems we're in a desperate situation again."
"Ah, I knew that even if you didn't say it."
"So what do we do now?"
"Don't rush, let me remember what the bell-ringing woman looks like."
Xiaoyan stared intently at the bell-ringing woman who was still ringing the bell, as if trying to etch her appearance into her memory.
"Are you done? It shouldn't take this long to remember what she looks like. We'll come back to cause her trouble next time."
"Hmph, so that's where you were hiding. No wonder we didn't find you the first time."
"Wait! Did you 'see' her past actions?"
Zhi turned around in surprise and saw purple flames burning in Xiao Yan's eyes.
"Of course, you think you were the only one who benefited after defeating the Ice Dog?"
Xiao Yan slowly withdrew her gaze, rubbing her head with a slight headache.
"We'll talk about the specifics when we get back to the campfire. Right now, it's time to think about which way of dying would be the best to go back."
The two returned to their back-to-back position, but by this time, the surrounding enemies had already extinguished their determination to fight to the death.
"Any recommended ways to die?"
"Being stabbed to death or burned to death by the fat auntie are both good choices."
"So, the main thing is to avoid getting eaten by the corpse-fusion monster, right?"
"I wouldn't mind if you wanted to try... but I think I have a better option."
"What is it?"
"Do you see that cliff over there?"
"I think I understand what you mean..."
"What are we waiting for?"
"Charge!"
The peaceful and simple Undead Street was in its usual routine as the Ashes, driven to desperation, let out their final roars before death and charged toward the death trap they had chosen.
The sword was swung, slicing through flesh and blood; magic bullets ricocheted, splattering blood.
They mustered their last ounce of strength, just to fight their way out, and that path would only lead them to a more peaceful death.
With the cliff so close, they recklessly plunged into the abyss.
"Wow! This is way more exciting than bungee jumping!"
"Nonsense, no one actually dies from bungee jumping!"
YOU DIED
————————————————————————————————————————
Achoo!
In some unknown world, in a seemingly ordinary classroom, a petite girl sneezed.
"Oh dear, Mikuru caught a cold? I told you not to go out partying at night and to take care of yourself. Look, now you're sick."
A girl with short, purple hair, wearing a headband with a ribbon tied to it, disregarded classroom rules, moved her chair next to her, and pulled her into her arms.
"Hmm, petite Mikuru is so soft and cuddly, it feels so good to hug her."
He was also making a grotesque, perverted sound.
Hey girl, you just made up an excuse to come over, didn't you? Look at that little guy, he's blushing so much he's almost suffocating.
