Kyoko asked, "Rena, which store should we go to first to ask?"
The street is lined with clothing stores. These can basically be ignored, as they don't hand out flyers and certainly don't employ minors. You can only try your luck at bubble tea shops or tutoring centers.
Reina said, "Kyoko, let's go to the Nine-Colored Deer at the alley near the Experimental Elementary School. That tutoring center is run by my dad's friend."
"That's not a good idea," Kyoko hesitated.
"It's alright, let's go." Rena pulled Kyoko over.
Experimental Elementary School was Rena's alma mater. She didn't do well in elementary school, so Izuki would drag her to tutoring classes on weekends. The tutoring center was this Nine-Colored Deer.
It was a truly "deeply memorable" experience; I will never forget that painful time.
Rena led Kyoko into the Nine-Colored Deer, where the interior decoration remained unchanged.
Chapter 143 Money-Grubber
"Rena's here," a middle-aged man at the front desk said, coming out to greet her.
He was Yi Yue's friend, named Chen Shang. He wore glasses, was thin, and had dry skin, giving him a fox-like appearance. His first impression was one of shrewdness and cunning; he didn't seem like a tutor, but rather a shrewd businessman.
"Hello, Teacher Chen," Reina said politely. Kyoko, feeling a little reserved, followed Reina's greeting in a low voice.
"Um, is this your classmate?" Chen Shang asked.
Xingzi said, "Hello, Teacher Chen."
Chen Shang nodded and asked a few questions about Rena's recent studies.
“These grades are bad, they’re dangerous. How could your grades be so poor in junior high?” Chen Shang shook his head.
Rena felt annoyed, but replied perfunctorily, "I'll try my best."
Chen Shang pulled out two large stacks of flyers from under the table.
"So much!" Rena exclaimed in surprise. "How much is it per hour?"
Chen Shang asked in confusion, "Didn't your dad say he'd do volunteer work for me for free?"
"No way!" Rena exclaimed excitedly, and Kyoko tugged at Rena's sleeve.
"Haha." Chen Shang laughed. "Little money-grubber, I was just kidding. It's fifteen an hour, starting from eight o'clock now, so if you come back at ten-thirty, I'll say forty."
"Thank you, Teacher Chen." Rena beamed. Because they were acquaintances, Chen Shang even overcharged Rena and the others. Rena's tone naturally softened, and she cutely revealed her little tiger teeth.
"Haha, go ahead." Chen Shang told Lingna and the others to hand out flyers near the elementary school gate. "Remember to come back by 10:30. Bring them back if you haven't finished handing out the flyers."
"Okay." Rena picked up a stack of flyers and ran out in a hurry.
"Rena, don't run so fast, wait for me!" Kyoko chased after her.
Chen Shang shook his head, amused.
Not long after Rena and the others left, Itsuki arrived.
"Sit down." Chen Shang and Yi Yue were chatting in the inner room when Chen Shang made Yi Yue a cup of tea.
“Your daughter is really precocious for her age,” Chen Shang said. “You didn’t see how greedy she was just now. If I hadn’t given in, she probably would have grabbed her classmate and run away.”
Yi Yue said, "That's normal. Kids come out to work during summer vacation. Do you think it's really for training? It's just for fun and to earn some extra money on the side."
Chen Shang said, "That's true, things are different now than before."
Yi Yue shook her head: "Sometimes I'm really afraid that her cleverness will backfire."
Chen Shang took a sip of tea and said self-deprecatingly, "I really envy you for having such a lovely daughter. You have two daughters now, while I don't have even one."
Yi Yue didn't respond to his comment.
Chen Shangdao: "You quit your job at the school too?"
"Hmm." Yi Yue lowered her head, staring at the tea in her cup, lost in thought.
"So you're staying at home now, without a job?" Chen Shang asked. Seeing Yi Yue nod, he leaned back on the sofa and said wistfully, "I've always thought you were a gigolo, destined to be kept. It's impossible not to be jealous. I don't want to work hard anymore."
Yi Yue glanced at Chen Shang.
Chen Shang sighed, "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said that." He took out a cigarette from his pocket, put one in his own mouth, and gave one to Yi Yue.
Yi Yue waved her hand, and Chen Shang scoffed, casually tossing his cigarette onto the table.
"Same as always, nothing has changed." Chen Shang lit a cigarette and exhaled smoke.
Yi Yue casually remarked, "I remember you didn't used to smoke."
Chen Shang looked up at the sky, the ceiling light dazzling his eyes. "Everything changes. You and I are the same kind of people."
……
Rena was in high spirits, and whenever someone passed by, she would immediately go up to them and hand them a flyer.
Rena is cute, and most people would take a second look and accept the flyer.
Kyoko forced a smile and handed out flyers to passersby, but many ignored her or took them without even glancing at her before throwing them on the ground at a nearby intersection. Looking at Rena, who remained full of energy beside her, Kyoko rallied her spirits; she couldn't lose to Rena.
But soon, while Kyoko was still diligently handing out flyers, Rena, on the other hand, had long lost her previous energy and looked dejected and listless.
"Kyoko..." Rena said weakly. This was the third time she had called Kyoko.
Kyoko looked helplessly at her phone in her pocket: "It's only 9:30 now, Rena, hang in there a little longer."
"How boring!" Rena said dejectedly, sitting on the back of a nearby electric scooter.
"Rena, get up. It's not good if others see us." Kyoko tugged at Rena.
Rena said, "It's okay, there's no one around. The sun is so bright now, no one would come over."
“That makes sense,” Kyoko nodded.
Rena stood up and pointed to the convenience store in front of her: "Let's go buy some water."
Kyoko hesitated for a moment, then said, "I'm not thirsty, Rena, you go buy some." She was struggling financially and felt that she could just endure it; there was no need to waste money on water just because she was thirsty.
"Then wait for me here." Rena ran to the convenience store in front.
Xingzi glanced at the blazing sun in the sky; the sunlight was growing stronger, so she retreated to a shady spot nearby. After a while, Xingzi felt a chill on her neck.
"Ugh!" Kyoko turned her head away unhappily.
Rena giggled and nimbly ran in front of Kyoko, rolling the Pepsi can in her hand on Kyoko's face: "Is it cold?"
"Rena!" Kyoko said unhappily.
Rena teased Kyoko, "Young lady, did you drop this blue Coke or this red Coke?" She held a Pepsi in her left hand and a Coke in her right.
Kyoko pouted and looked at Rena.
"Here you go!" Rena handed the deco to Kyoko with a grin and said, "Drink up."
Xingzi hesitated, but still took it, inserted a straw, and took small sips.
"The ultimate comfort drink!" Rena laughed, taking a sip of her cola and letting out a burp. "Ah, so refreshing!"
Kyoko blinked in confusion: "Rena is saying something I don't understand again."
Rena looked at Kyoko with a smile, then suddenly her expression changed, and she reached for the flyer on the ground.
Kyoko was startled. Was it Teacher Chen coming to check? She hurriedly looked back, and Rena took the opportunity to sip Kyoko's Pepsi.
"Rena!" Kyoko turned around unhappily, almost scared to death. Turning back, she saw Rena drinking her soda.
"Hehe, now it's double the happiness!" Rena said.
Anzu blushed and asked, "Rena, what are you doing?"
"What do you mean, what are you doing? I just took a sip of your soda."
"But……"
"What does it matter? You can have a sip of mine too." Xingzi handed over her Coke.
Apricot blushed and said, "That's not what I meant."
"Then what are you saying? Why do you sound so lesbian?" Rena teased.
"Orange-scented?" Kyoko didn't understand what that meant.
"It just means yuri. It's a reference from an anime series," Rena said casually.
"Yuri?" Kyoko blushed and panicked, at a loss for words.
Is it...
Xingzi started having wild thoughts, her face burning hot enough to boil an egg.
"Rena, I can't accept this." Kyoko thought for a long time before saying seriously, "However, we can still be friends."
"Huh?" Rena looked confused and didn't understand.
It does not make sense?
Chapter 144 Helpless
It was almost 10:30 when Rena and the others returned to the cram school with the remaining flyers.
When Rena and the others entered the cram school, they saw Izuki Makise Izuki and Chen Shang waiting for them in the room, enjoying the air conditioning and drinking tea.
"The flyers are placed at the door," Chen Shang said.
Makise took a tissue and wiped Rena's sweat: "Come sit down, you're covered in sweat."
Chen Shang took out the money he had prepared from the bottom drawer and gave it to Reina Kyoko.
"Thank you," Kyoko said softly.
Rena took the money, glanced warily at Izuki, and quickly put it back in her pocket.
Yi Yue was exasperated by her daughter's appearance. Chen Shang patted Yi Yue's arm and laughed non-stop: "Your daughter will definitely be very successful in the future."
Kyoko, feeling awkward, whispered to Rena, "Rena, I'm leaving now."
