Chapter 0001 A Tragedy Triggered by a Complaint
Late at night, in the kitchen of a restaurant called Catherine's Kiss in Brooklyn, New York, a young Chinese man who looked to be in his early twenties was wearing a white apron and busily washing a mountain of plates.
His expression was serious and focused, as if washing dishes was a noble and great job. Even though the fair-skinned, sexy white female boss was standing not far away watching him, he did not respond at all, but instead worked even more cautiously.
It has to be said that this scene was rather bizarre, so bizarre that the other male employees in the kitchen all showed expressions of envy, jealousy, and resentment.
The Black man, who was also washing dishes, immediately whispered and teased, "Hey buddy, you're in luck. You know, I've worked at this restaurant for over half a year, and I've never seen our charming boss pay so much attention to any man. Maybe you could take a little initiative and ask her out for dinner after get off work or something."
"Shut up! Get to work!" the young Chinese man replied coldly, continuing to quickly wash the next plate.
However, a closer look reveals a deep fear in his eyes, as if the beautiful, aloof woman opposite him were some terrifying monster.
“Okay, okay, keep your serious and aloof demeanor. Maybe that’s what Catherine likes about you.” The black man muttered under his breath, shrugging indifferently.
After nearly a month of getting to know each other, he had long since gotten used to the other person's indifferent attitude towards everyone else.
A few more minutes passed, and the beautiful female boss finally turned and left the kitchen, disappearing around the corner at the end of the stairs.
Upon seeing this, the young Chinese man instantly breathed a sigh of relief, and the tense expression on his face relaxed.
Perhaps the other employees in the kitchen didn't know who Catherine was, but having witnessed his boss use his powerful will to throw a werewolf covered in thick hair into the air and kill it, he would never have any improper thoughts about her.
In fact, he is not from this world, but from another ordinary person with more than 90% similarity to Earth.
The reason I was thrown here was simply because I got drunk in a bar and complained to a complete stranger about how monotonous the real world was, how boring my job was, and how cold the relationships between people were. I wished I could live in a world full of fantasy.
As for what the stranger looked like, he couldn't remember anything at all because he was drunk.
But who would have thought that a perfectly normal complaint would trigger a terrible tragedy?
When he woke up, he was surprised to find himself lying naked in a dirty alley, with a small parchment scroll next to him that read: "My dear friend, this is the fantasy world you have been looking for. Please begin to enjoy it."
At first, he thought it was just a bad joke or prank by his friend, so he picked up the scroll and went out of the alley to see who was playing a trick on him.
However, as the saying goes, you won't know until you see it, and once you do, you'll be shocked.
The surrounding area, whether it was pedestrians or shops, was mostly populated by whites, blacks, and Latinos, with very few Asians. If this was a prank, it was a bit too much.
He then received a set of old clothes from a kind old man and, following his directions, headed towards the city center. A few hours later, he saw the famous Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the Golden Gate Bridge, and other iconic landmarks.
At this moment, even if he were stupid, he would know that this was New York, the largest and most prosperous city in the entire America!
Even time has been turned back to 2003!
Shock!
confused!
incredible!
With indescribable mixed feelings, he began trying to contact his family and friends on the other side of the ocean to find out what had happened.
Unfortunately, it seems there is absolutely no trace of his existence in this world.
After countless confirmations, he finally realized that what was written on the parchment scroll was not a joke, but the truth!
The only thing that's unclear is what "fantasy" means here.
Until about twenty days ago...
He encountered his current boss, Catherine Agnes...
A witch who possesses terrifying supernatural powers...
"Zhang Cheng, here, this is your salary for this week. Be careful on your way back, things have been a bit unsettled on the streets lately."
An elderly Mexican man who looked to be in his fifties suddenly walked in and threw an envelope containing banknotes on the table.
His name is Carls. On the surface, he is the manager of this restaurant, but in reality, he is Catherine Agnes's servant, assistant, and butler. He also possesses some incredible powers.
"Thank you very much, sir!" The young Chinese man quickly turned around to express his gratitude, without even looking at how much money was inside, and stuffed it directly into his pocket.
As a person without a birth certificate, driver's license, green card, or work visa, he was not entitled to any insurance or social welfare. He could only work illegally and live cautiously on his meager weekly cash income, occasionally having to evade police and immigration raids, as well as harassment from thugs.
However, today marks his thirtieth day since he came into this world, an extremely special day. Once midnight has passed, the first task given on that mysterious parchment scroll—to survive for thirty days—will be successfully completed.
At that time, he will randomly select a profession from the many fantasy games he has played, as well as the novels and movies he has watched, as a template, and enter the world of that profession to obtain his own power.
Ever since he was chased for three blocks by a werewolf with sharp teeth and nearly died after being caught and torn to pieces, he realized that although Earth may seem ordinary on the surface, it hides many supernatural creatures and people with special abilities that only exist in myths and folk tales, including vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, ghouls, ghosts, devils, angels, wizards, witch hunters, witch doctors, shamans, and so on.
If he doesn't want to die someday without knowing why, he must have the ability to at least protect himself.
As for who threw him into this world and what their purpose was, he didn't intend to think about it for the time being.
After all, if the other party is able to throw a person from one timeline to another, or even to a parallel universe, their power must be unimaginably strong. It could even be a prank by some god in the multiverse who has nothing better to do.
Moreover, even if he finds the mastermind, he can't force them to send him back, so he should focus on increasing his strength and establishing himself in this world first.
Filled with an eager desire for mysterious power, Zhang Cheng quickly finished washing the mountain of dishes in the sink, took off his work clothes and changed into a cheap casual outfit he had bought from a second-hand store, and strode towards his residence.
It's important to know that Brooklyn, New York is not a safe place. Especially since he chose a relatively chaotic neighborhood for the sake of cheap rent, gunshots and screams could be heard almost every night. In addition, with the presence of some mysterious forces, the deaths of a few people were commonplace.
Perhaps it is precisely because of this that the scroll gave the task of successfully surviving for thirty days...
Chapter 0002 Werewolves
In the narrow, dark alley, a street lamp that was about to burn out flickered on and off, as if it might go out at any moment. It was as if it was reflecting the people in this chaotic neighborhood. Although life was so difficult and dangerous, there was always a small group of people who did not choose to give up and still had a glimmer of hope in their hearts.
But as they grow older, this faint flame of hope will eventually die out. Young people who once dreamed of escaping poverty and achieving success will eventually become criminals or take up special professions that are despised by society.
However, none of this mattered to Zhang Cheng. He just wanted to get back to his relatively safe place as soon as possible and obediently spend the last days of the mission.
He didn't care about other people's lives or deaths at all, and he certainly didn't want to run into any more vampires, werewolves, or anything like that.
Unfortunately, according to Murphy's Law, the more a person worries about something, the more likely that thing will happen.
Just as he was about to cross the street and enter the dilapidated four-story apartment building not far away, he suddenly heard a piercing scream from a street away.
"Aaaaaaahh ...
Immediately afterward, a young girl, dressed in tattered clothes with dark red blood flowing from her shoulder, rushed out, screaming in terror, "Monster...monster! There's a monster! Help me!"
Before Zhang Cheng could react to what was happening, two tall, dark figures caught up with her at lightning speed, tackled the girl to the ground, tore off her already tattered clothes in a few quick movements, and bit down on her slender neck.
puff!!!!
The bright red liquid immediately splattered everywhere!
The girl didn't even have time to scream before she breathed her last.
Judging from her clothes, she was probably a student at a nearby high school. After school, she didn't go home but went off to hang out somewhere. Her books and stationery were scattered messily on the ground. The light in her eyes quickly dimmed, and she left this world with endless fear and resentment.
The two tall, dark figures did not hesitate, but lay on the corpse, tearing and swallowing it like hungry beasts.
Upon seeing this scene, Zhang Cheng felt a sudden pang in his heart and immediately reached for the pistol hidden in his pocket.
The shadowy figure frantically devouring the corpse was none other than the werewolf that had been chasing him all over the streets not long ago!
These creatures are covered in thick black or brown fur, stand over two meters tall, and their strong, muscular bodies can easily overturn an ordinary family car. Their sharp claws and teeth are covered in blood and bits of flesh, and their eyes emit a terrifying red light.
Because tonight happens to be a full moon night, they are completely devoid of reason, their minds filled with thoughts of hunting and killing.
According to the witch Catherine, werewolves are a paradox of being half-human and half-beast. When they are not in human form, they are no different from ordinary people. However, once they are affected by the full moon and transform, they instantly become monsters driven by bestial instincts. Unless some special means are used, it is impossible to stop them from harming others.
Werewolves, especially those living in New York, often lock themselves in warehouses or basements on the night of a full moon, waiting until they regain their senses before venturing out again.
However, there are always exceptions. A small group of werewolves believe that returning to their wild instincts is what makes them complete werewolves.
Therefore, they don't lock themselves up at all, but instead choose to roam around and wreak havoc on the night of the full moon.
With its terrifying muscle strength and incredibly fast wound healing speed, small-caliber firearms and knives are practically useless against werewolves. Even if riddled with bullets, they can heal within a dozen seconds, and the bullets will be squeezed out.
Only silver boiled in a secret medicine can truly stop the wound from healing and kill the transformed werewolf.
Of course, if a powerful person could simply cut off their heads, they could also kill the werewolves...
As an ordinary young man, Zhang Cheng clearly lacked the ability to fight hand-to-hand, and the 9mm pistol he had bought on the black market for less than $150 was undoubtedly insufficient to deal with the crisis at hand.
Therefore, without any hesitation, while the werewolf was frantically devouring the corpse, he turned around and ran wildly towards the restaurant where he worked, trying to ask his young and beautiful female boss, or her servant Kars, for help.
As for calling the police, he didn't even dare to think about it. Putting aside the trouble of being an undocumented immigrant, the weapons carried by ordinary patrol officers were simply not enough to handle the current situation.
"Awoooooo!!! ...
A loud howl was heard, and the exceptionally tall werewolf suddenly turned around. It was obvious that it had spotted new prey. It immediately called to another werewolf, leaving behind the mangled female corpse, and they flanked the werewolf from both sides.
Damn it!
Zhang Cheng cursed through gritted teeth, quickly pulled out his 9mm pistol, and pulled the trigger without hesitation.
boom! boom! boom!
With a flash of light, three bullets struck the werewolf charging at the front, the huge impact causing it to stop in its tracks, blood splattering everywhere.
Being hit directly by a gun at close range like this would probably have knocked an ordinary person to the ground by now.
But for the werewolf, it was merely a superficial wound. In less than two or three seconds, the muscles began to squeeze the bullet inside, eventually forcing it out...
Although the fur on its body was still stained with a lot of blood, the wound had completely healed, as if it had never been injured at all.
At that moment, Zhang Cheng felt an urge to curse out loud. He raised his gun again and aimed it at another werewolf who had caught up with him, firing several more shots until the gun barrel made a series of hollow clicks. Then he turned and ran madly.
While running, he didn't forget to take out the strange parchment from his pocket and check the countdown on it.
He knew very well that with his physical strength and speed, it was impossible for him to escape the pursuit of the two werewolves. Therefore, his only hope was to complete the task of surviving for thirty days and obtain a profession template before being caught.
fortunately!
This time, the parchment did not disappoint him, and it went straight into the final minute countdown.
In other words, in sixty seconds, it will be midnight.
"One minute! I just need to hold on for one more minute!"
