“Okay, you’ve saved the world again.” Tony shrugged and said, “That world is really something else, unlike us who are just playing with ourselves inside Earth, and there are all sorts of aliens.”
“I don’t want aliens to find our Earth. No matter when the war is, it’s always the ordinary people who suffer.” Adam shook his head and said, “If this continues, these ordinary people will one day hate all the super heroes, just as they hate all the super villains. They will think that if super heroes didn’t exist, then super villains wouldn’t exist either.”
Upon hearing Adam's words, Tony suddenly fell silent and stopped speaking. This wasn't something that would happen someday; it was already happening. Ever since the last operation went wrong and resulted in civilian casualties, almost the entire world was targeting superheroes, and this was something that had been troubling Tony lately.
Adam noticed that his younger brother looked unwell and asked, "What happened?"
“Our last operation resulted in some casualties,” Tony paused, then continued, “and now most countries are unwilling to allow our Avengers members into their territory.”
"Such a thing actually happened?" Adam frowned and asked, "What exactly happened that day?"
“Scarlet Witch, well, she's a new member of our team. She's very powerful, but she doesn't control her abilities very well. And it happened so suddenly; a grenade was about to explode, and she used her magical energy to contain it, but she couldn't compress the explosive energy, so she had to throw it away.” Tony sighed and said, “Because she couldn't control its direction, it crashed into a nearby building. There are already a lot of people protesting, saying they want all the superheroes to remove their masks and stuff.”
“It seems there must be some organization or person behind this,” Adam said after a moment of contemplation.
“I don’t know, but there’s been some internal turmoil.” Tony sighed wearily. “I don’t know what to do to maintain the unity of our alliance.”
"What do you think?" Adam asked.
“Me? I don’t know. I’ve been really annoyed by these things lately. Sometimes I think I should just quit.” Tony complained to his older brother, “They don’t know that the government’s defense department is already discussing implementing a policy of registering Class 1 heroes. They want to have information on all Class 1 heroes.”
"The government wants to interfere in the affairs of superheroes?" Adam frowned and asked, "What about the Human Management Association? What are they doing?"
“The Human Management Association has been banned by various countries; they are no longer a non-governmental organization.” Tony sighed and said, “I’m sorry, I really don’t know how to stop it.”
Adam was disheartened after hearing this. In just one year, the whole world had changed, and the traces of his existence in this world were being erased little by little, which disappointed Adam.
"Okay, I understand," Adam said with his eyes closed.
Indeed, he doesn't belong to this world.
"What do you think of this so-called registration bill?" Adam asked after a moment of silence.
“Perhaps this is a way to resolve the conflict between us superheroes and ordinary humans.” Tony paused for a long time before giving his answer after hearing Adam’s question.
"Have you ever thought about how much trouble these masked heroes would cause their families, friends, and loved ones if their true identities were revealed?" Adam suddenly asked.
"The military has agreed to protect the families of these people," Tony said, sounding unsure of himself.
“Tony! When did you become so childish?” Adam frowned and said, “Are you sure the military will protect their families instead of using that to blackmail these superheroes into doing things they don’t want to do, like going to war!”
“I know, I know this might happen, but if we don’t sign the bill, these superheroes will no longer be legitimate, they’ll be arrested.” Tony suddenly said angrily, “Yes, I know what will happen if their identities are exposed. I myself was attacked once, but what do we do now? Just continue to be a free superhero, fueled by everyone’s hatred? What about the dead? Who will take responsibility for the deaths of the innocent civilians caught in the crossfire of our battles?!!!”
“That’s not what I meant, Tony. We should think of other ways. There must be a way to solve this,” Adam said to his younger brother.
“How do we solve this? We don’t have your strength. The government can easily arrest us by sending in the military. Okay, they won’t arrest me, I am Stark after all, but what about the others? What about them? They don’t have your strength. They are just ordinary people, just ordinary people who accidentally gained their powers. How do you expect them to escape the government’s pursuit?” Tony shouted.
"But who will be responsible for the safety of their family members? Is..." Adam's words were interrupted by Tony in a very rude manner.
“Since you chose this line of work, you should have known about security,” Tony said coldly. “When they joined, they should have thought about the day their identities would be exposed. No one can hide their identity forever. Okay, I know you want to say you'll protect them, but can you guarantee you'll stay here forever? Look, it's only been a year. You've only disappeared for a year, and everything you created is gone, worn away by time. The earth will still turn even if someone is missing. I think you're the naive one, bro!”
After Adam finished speaking, he left Adam's house somewhat angrily, leaving Adam sitting motionless in the living room in silence. 8
Chapter 392 The Scovia Agreement
Tony left, leaving Adam alone in the living room of the villa. About half an hour later, he stood up and went into the bedroom. Everything in the bedroom was exactly the same as when he left, except for a crystal on the dressing table, which must be the image crystal Christine left for him.
Adam had seen the image crystal a few times and knew how to use it. Moreover, Christine had used special magic to allow Adam to see the contents inside. Therefore, when Adam held the crystal in his hand, it began to shimmer with a ghostly blue light.
The golden characters remained conspicuous in the pale blue light, and there were two choices below: yes or no. Clearly, Christine had considered that Adam might take the crystal in his hand later.
Adam pressed his hand, and the crystal disappeared. In front of Adam, Christine's image appeared. She then recounted her longing for Adam, her joy upon hearing news of the child, her reluctance to leave Earth, and her unwavering commitment to waiting for Adam in the Divine Realm. After watching the short ten-minute video, Adam sighed.
A pair of hands embraced Adam from behind, followed by a melodious voice, "Master, are you troubled by our affairs? Actually, I can wait."
Judging from that voice and that tone of voice, it could only be Athena.
Adam shook his head slightly and said, "Since I have already made the promise, I will definitely give you a proper status."
“But at the time, Master, you didn’t know Christine was pregnant. If you had known, you definitely wouldn’t have made that choice. Don’t worry, I will wait for the day when Christine can accept me.” Athena tightened her arms around Adam and said softly, “If you bring this up now, even though Christine may be mentally prepared, she will still feel uncomfortable, after all, she is pregnant now.”
"I'm sorry to have troubled you." Adam wanted to say something, but in the end, all he could say was this.
He felt like a complete failure. Looking back on his life, from being influenced by Superman's memories to gradually becoming a superhero, he had experienced so much. But sometimes he wondered if he was really himself? Could he really be a superhero? There were no answers to any of these questions. It was during this time that he met Christine. He felt that his love for Christine was genuine. However, he met other people and experienced other things. Although his love for Christine remained unchanged, he felt that his personality was still influenced by Superman's memories. Sometimes, the conflict between Superman's memories and Adam Stark's personality led him to do things he later regretted, such as flirting with Jean Grey, seducing Dark Phoenix and Maria Hill, and so on.
After much difficulty, he went to another world and gradually found himself again. When he returned, he found that all the traces he had left in this world had been quietly erased by time. At this time, he heard the news that Christine was pregnant and had some disagreements with his younger brother. He found himself feeling a little tired, so he leaned on Athena behind him and fell asleep quietly.
"Perhaps this world really isn't right for us, Master," Athena said with a sigh, gently smoothing Adam's brow.
Near a UN peacekeeping force base in an impoverished country
Tonight, the peacekeeping forces are having a banquet. Today, they finally helped the government forces repel the rebels. Although UN peacekeeping forces generally do not intervene in such operations, today is a special case.
The peacekeeping force base was bustling with activity. Behind a huge rock, a middle-aged man in tattered clothes coldly watched the peacekeeping forces in the distance. He took out something that looked like a detonator from his pocket and pressed a red button.
A deafening roar, a massive explosion, echoed through the silent night for a very long time. The explosion was incredibly powerful; it's estimated that none of the people inside escaped alive.
"Part One is finished. Next, it's time for Part Two." Behind the boulder, the man stared calmly at the devastating scene in the distance, muttered this in a low voice, and then immediately ran away.
The man emerged from the shadow of the boulder, revealing his true identity: Bucky Barnes, Captain America's good friend and the Winter Soldier transformed into a super soldier. He stood quietly at a distance for about ten minutes, seemingly to allow spy satellites in outer space to take pictures, before leaving.
After that, every few hours the UN peacekeeping forces were attacked by Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier, causing heavy losses. This attracted the attention of various countries. Eventually, the King of Wakanda seemed to have no desire to continue watching and took the lead in inviting the leaders of other countries to prepare for a counter-terrorism conference. The theme of the conference was to have the superheroes sign a governance agreement, and the location was Vienna.
Around midnight that day, the Pentagon held an emergency meeting and decided to have the superheroes sign the Scovia Superhero Oversight Agreement and take complete control of the group of superheroes.
"I have some bad news for you." A high-ranking military officer frowned upon hearing the news from his subordinate: "Adam Stark, who has been missing for a long time, seems to have returned."
What? Superman is back?
"But what can he do if he comes back?"
"Yes, it's a done deal. Even if he comes back, he can't change anything. We've already spent a year erasing his influence."
"Silence, gentlemen, silence!" a gray-haired man stood up and shouted. He was the person in charge of this matter, the U.S. Secretary of State.
"We Americans have fought many battles, and for the sake of our national authority, we should also bring these lawless superheroes under control. If they rebel, we should imprison them in our newly built prisons, because only those of us here can represent American justice and law!" The U.S. Secretary of State continued, "As for Adam Stark, rest assured, he will be on our side, and even if he isn't, I have ways to keep him out of this."
As the meeting adjourned and U.S. Secretary of State Kerry was packing his things, a middle-aged man approached him and asked, "Are you really able to keep Superman out of this?"
"Hey, don't talk about Superman. He's just a citizen of the United States. You have to understand that this world ultimately belongs to ordinary people like us." The Secretary of State seemed to have a deep-seated aversion to superheroes, saying this coldly before leaving.
Of course, Adam was unaware of everything that was happening there. The next day, Adam got up at dawn and left home with Athena and the Tower of Ganata, returning to the watchtower and restarting it.
After the watchtower was activated, Athena immediately took control of all its permissions, and thus Athena had complete control over everything concerning the watchtower.
“It seems someone came here afterward.” Athena frowned and said, “The disbandment of the Justice League doesn’t seem to be simply due to personnel losses.”
"So, someone has made a move?" Adam sneered.
“That’s right. Unfortunately, all the instruments on the watchtower were turned off when they came, so they didn’t leave many traces. If it weren’t for some alchemical tools I made that recorded some things, we wouldn’t have known that anyone had been here,” Athena said, her expression slightly changing.
“Things are getting more and more interesting.” Adam pondered for a moment and said, “Thoroughly inspect the watchtower, and keep an eye on that agreement Tony mentioned before.”
“Yes, Master,” Athena replied immediately.
Adam looked at the familiar surroundings and recalled his experiences here with Christine and Athena. His eyes instantly turned cold. How dare someone reach out to this place, the place Adam considered his home? Adam was already in a bad mood, feeling that the disbandment of the Justice League and the series of events were due to his own failures. But now, discovering that there was someone manipulating things behind the scenes, Adam was instantly enraged.
"I'd like to see who you really are!" Adam said, standing on the control panel and coldly looking at the distant Earth.
Chapter 393 The Avengers' Crisis
Avengers Tower—well, this is a base built specifically for the Avengers by Tony Stark through a foundation he established in his mother's name. It's also meant to provide a stable home for those superheroes who don't have much family.
At this moment, Captain America was sitting in his room watching television. Almost every channel on the television was broadcasting about the failure of the last operation. The Kingdom of Wakanda, in particular, was very active, with their king's speeches being broadcast everywhere. At this moment, they almost regarded the Avengers as a terrorist organization.
Click. Captain America turned off the TV, feeling somewhat agitated. He had been fighting for his country and people since World War II, but now, without realizing it, he found himself standing against them. This feeling made him very uncomfortable, especially with the recent rumors making him feel like he was caught in some kind of conspiracy.
At that very moment, a pale blue energy ball suddenly appeared in Captain America's room, forming a miniature wormhole. Just as Captain America was surprised and instinctively on guard, a black metallic dot flew out from the wormhole, and then the wormhole silently closed and disappeared.
"What on earth is going on?" Captain America looked at the small box on his bed and opened it with a hint of doubt.
In another room, Scarlet Witch Wanda Maximoff sat on her bed, hugging her knees, staring blankly at the news on television. Her life was, in a sense, a tragedy. As a clone—yes, she was a clone of Magneto's daughter who had died many years ago—Hydra had finally cloned her and her brother a little over a year ago after years of research.
Because they were clones, all their knowledge was implanted into their minds by Hydra. Therefore, they initially had no sense of right and wrong and almost helped Hydra to the point of ruining the Avengers. In the end, Hydra was destroyed, and Ultron's ambition was exposed. She and her brother decided to rebel against Ultron and were eventually accepted by the Avengers. Unfortunately, her brother died in that war, leaving her all alone in the world.
Finally, she has a new home, which is the Avengers. In the last operation, she caused many casualties due to negligence, so now almost the whole world is against her continuing to serve as a superhero, and some countries are even clamoring to hand her over.
She knew what would happen to her after being handed over; she would definitely be used as an experiment again. She didn't know what to do at this moment, and she didn't know if her new partners would hand her over. Because of her helplessness, she could only hug her legs and bury her head in them, remaining motionless.
Just then, Captain America knocked on the door and came in. He noticed the TV was still on and showing the same content, so he frowned and turned it off.
"Don't listen to their nonsense. Not every battle can go according to our wishes," Captain America reassured him.
“It was my oversight. I’m sorry that you all suffered such humiliation,” Wanda said in a low voice.
"No, it's not your fault. I didn't realize he had a grenade. I've fought him a few times, so I should have been able to figure it out." Captain America was unwilling to shift the blame onto a girl who had only been in this world for a few years.
"Will we be forgiven?" Wanda looked up and asked with a hint of expectation.
"Yes, we are doing this for their safety. Although our actions have some flaws, they will understand."
Captain America knew this was a crisis, and since it could create such a big commotion in such a short time, it certainly wouldn't end easily. But even so, he didn't want to disappoint this helpless girl and wanted to give her a glimmer of hope through a white lie.
Just then, a lifelike bronze-colored figure wearing a strange suit appeared from the wall. He seemed somewhat surprised to see Captain America and Wanda, and then calmly stated his purpose.
"Iron Man said he was going to have a meeting, and he brought a few people with him."
Captain America and Wanda were still staring at him. He was originally given a body by Ultron, but at the last moment Jarvis rushed in and fought with Ultron's program, which caused an incredible change and created a new life, namely this person named Vision. However, perhaps because some of Jarvis's data was also integrated into it, he had a very good relationship with Tony and was almost completely obedient to him.
“I said I would knock,” Wanda said, looking at Vision with a hint of exasperation.
"Okay, should I knock on the door and then come in?" As a newly born life form, he wasn't very familiar with some social customs, but he seemed to have a strange feeling towards Wanda, always hoping to attract this woman's attention. Therefore, he always seemed a bit weak in front of Wanda.
"Alright, you're already in." Wanda said, somewhat speechless.
"Since there's going to be a meeting, let's go together." Captain America watched the exchange between the two with amusement, which dispelled much of the gloom in his heart.
The three of them arrived at the Avengers' meeting room. Tony Stark and the others were already seated, looking at the elderly man who had suddenly appeared. Of course, some of them might recognize the elderly man, and they were all waiting for him to speak.
"Hopefully we're not too late." Captain America frowned slightly, glanced at Tony, and then said.
"Oh, no, it's just that this old man has arrived a bit early. Um, let me introduce myself. I'm the U.S. Secretary of State. You can call me Rick. I have some things I'd like to discuss with you today." This is Secretary of State Rick, who last night secured the Avengers' agreement.
"What brings you here today?" Falcon, who harbored no goodwill towards the government, asked with a frown. He was a retired veteran who held a deep grudge against the government for various reasons, which was why he asked so bluntly.
"Purpose? Heh, I'm here to talk to you about some things that have happened since your founding." Secretary of State Rick released some documents and said, "This is New York City. Several blocks were almost destroyed because of your battle with the aliens. This is Washington, D.C., which also suffered great losses in the battle between Hydra and you. And Scovia was almost razed to the ground. And there was that operation a few days ago."
"What are you trying to say?" Captain America asked, frowning.
"Every action you take has caused great losses to our country and people. You are no longer the beloved heroes of the people," Secretary of State Rick said bluntly. "You have become destroyers!"
Just then, a beam of light suddenly appeared in the conference room. Adam teleported in from the watchtower, looking at Secretary of State Rick with an indifferent expression, and said sarcastically, "That's very well said. Those guys who wanted to drop a nuclear bomb on New York are all fine, those who support Hydra are still at large, and the Avengers who clean up your mess have become your victims?"
