Tony initially thought the party was just a small gathering with nothing much to do, but once he entered the villa, he discovered that everything was different from what he had imagined. A group of beautiful women were frolicking in the villa's outdoor pool, making him regret bringing Pepper to the party.
Pepperpotts didn't disagree at this point, saying, "I didn't expect that Mr. Adam seems to have changed a bit since he woke up this time."
After listening, Tony walked into the villa and said, "Actually, I can't say he's changed, because in the beginning he was pretty much like me, um, a playful guy too. But from the moment he started to awaken more superpowers, I noticed he changed a bit."
"So, he's back to normal this time?" Pepper frowned and asked. "If that's the case, it's really bad."
Adam, who saw Tony and Pepper walk in, seemed to have heard Pepper's words and went over to them with a smile, saying, "Don't worry, I won't become like Tony. I've just figured some things out, and there are a few people who like to have fun among the people here tonight. It's normal for a few pretty girls to liven things up."
Pepper gave an awkward smile and said, "Sorry." After all, this was already considered speaking ill of someone behind their back.
Tony waved his hand and said, "Listen, Pepper, it's my brother who should apologize. He was the one eavesdropping on us. You shouldn't be the one apologizing."
Adam smiled and said, "Yes, that seems to be the case. Well then, welcome to your party, Tony, Pepper."
Tony walked over and hugged Adam, saying, "I'm sorry, bro. And thank God you were able to wake up. It's only when you're gone that you realize how much I love you."
After all, they had only met briefly before and didn't have time to say much before Adam and Christine had to leave in a hurry because of the situation in the Middle East. So this was a more formal meeting.
Adam patted Tony on the back and said, "Yeah, I love you too, Tony. But could you let me go? It's embarrassing for me, and you know I like women."
Chapter 259 Meteorite Attack
Four months have passed since the last party, a period that can be considered quite peaceful. In these days, in addition to attending a series of meetings and press conferences, Adam has been focused on building the Justice League headquarters—the Watchtower. He finally completed the work a little over ten days ago and successfully tested the teleportation function.
From that day on, the safety of New York City seemed to have improved significantly, because whenever something happened, the Justice League members were always able to arrive quickly. Adam, as the spokesperson for the Justice League, also revealed the existence and some functions of the Watchtower to the public in a news release a few days ago.
Of course, some dissenting voices emerged in the following days. They felt uneasy about the presence of a watchtower above them, and that it was unpleasant to feel like their lives were being monitored. However, Adam eventually stepped forward and assured them that the watchtower would not be used for such trivial matters, which silenced some people. On that day, Adam uttered the most arrogant statement he had ever made since his debut: "If I really wanted to monitor you, you wouldn't even know, and I wouldn't be telling you this here."
"I've noticed that you've changed a bit since you woke up," Maria Hill said with a sigh as she waited for him to leave after the meeting ended.
"Really? People always change. I've just figured some things out and don't want to argue with those politicians anymore," Adam said with a smile.
“But don’t you think you’re depriving them of their right to speak freely?” Maria Hill asked, frowning. “You weren’t like this before.”
"If you knew just how vast the universe truly is, you'd change your mind. I don't want any kind of dictatorship or one-man rule, because I have no interest in that. All I want is to act as a protector until Earth is fully prepared," Adam paused, then continued, "You can tell those people what I mean: Earth is just an unexplored territory in this vast universe. But some extraterrestrials or powerful beings from the universe are already watching Earth, so I don't have time to chat with politicians. I need to devise some foolproof plans. I hope they won't hold us back!"
Maria Hill asked, "Is it really that serious?"
“You’re in more serious shape than I thought,” Adam sighed. “Even I am like a child in front of some powerful beings in the universe, powerless to even throw a punch.”
“Alright. I will relay your words to the committee members verbatim,” Maria Hill nodded.
"Okay, that's settled then. I'll be leaving now. If there's any new information, remember to let me know." After saying that, Adam left the meeting. As a result, those who were planning to cause trouble behind the scenes never showed up again after that reply.
In recent days, with Athena managing Dawn Corporation very well, Adam has stopped going to work and has taken to living the life of a recluse. After all, New York City doesn't need his help these days; Spider-Man is there during the day, and superheroes like the Punisher, Night Owl, and Daredevil are there at night, so there's nothing to worry about. Therefore, apart from occasionally returning to the Watchtower, Adam has been staying home researching things or traveling around with Christine, seemingly trying to make up for a year of missed romantic dates.
That day, Adam and Christine, who had just returned from a trip to France, received a call from Pepper. She said she wanted to come to a party that evening, a rather important one for Stark Industries, so Adam and Christine agreed to arrive on time.
“Pepper wants you to call Tony, right?” Christine said with a smile.
Adam shrugged and said, "Knowing Tony as I do, if I don't call him, he probably won't show up tonight, and Obadiah Stane will go up to accept the award again."
Afterwards, Adam called Tony somewhat helplessly and made it very clear to Tony that if Tony hadn't arrived by the time they got there, Adam would give him a free trip from Earth to the Watchtower.
That evening, in a large hall, inventors and entrepreneurs from all over the world sat watching a large screen on the stage, where Tony Stark was being briefly introduced and showcased for some of his inventions, as he had received a prestigious award that evening. Since Adam was also present, Tony was there, though he sat impatiently beside Adam.
"I really don't know what's so interesting about an awards ceremony where the results are already known?" Tony said, pursing his lips.
"I know this is meaningless, but they did give you the trophy, so you should at least show them some respect," Adam said helplessly.
“But that’s a huge waste of time. I could win a lot of money in that time.” Tony saw that the person speaking seemed to be looking at him, so he quickly gave them a smile, but then his expression returned to its listless state.
Are you short of money?
“Talking to someone like you is so boring. Ah, it’s finally time for me to go upstairs. I need to end this tedious party quickly.” With that, Tony stood up, revealing his sarcastic smile, and walked towards the front desk.
“I think he’s going to be on the front page again,” Christine said, looking at Tony. “You have no idea how much some of my celebrity friends hate him. He always steals the front page, and with such trivial news.”
“Let them be envious and jealous,” Adam shrugged. “Tony is a scandal and gossip machine. Wherever he goes and whatever he does, people report on him. Luckily, we won’t be bothered by that.”
"You really dare to say that," Christine chuckled, covering her mouth. "Who got Athena to intervene and prevent those reporters from taking pictures of us?"
Amidst the laughter and chatter, Tony had already received the trophy. The emcee reminded him to say a few words. Of course, according to the usual practice, those who go up first thank the organization that presents the award, and then share some of their own thoughts. But when it came to Tony, everything changed.
"Uh, do I need to say a few words?" Tony shrugged, holding the trophy. "I feel really awkward holding this trophy right now. You know, my hands aren't meant to hold this thing. Yeah, it looks terrible. I guess I should remind the organizers to get a nicer trophy next time. This one is completely unoriginal."
The organizer's representatives' smiling faces instantly changed, but after all, the other party was Tony Stark, not only the most powerful inventor of this century but also the owner of Stark Industries. They dared not offend him and could only force a smile.
"Oh my god, I knew this would happen," Adam said, covering his face. "I kind of regret forcing him to come here."
“But I think he’s right,” Christine laughed. “Their trophy really is ugly.”
Just then, Adam's phone suddenly started vibrating. Adam picked it up and saw that it was a message from Athena, saying that the watchtower's detectors had detected a giant meteorite and, after calculating its trajectory, determined that it would collide with Earth in 26 hours.
Adam frowned, stood up, and said to Christine, "Let's go, something's happened." After saying that, he nodded apologetically to the people around him and prepared to leave with Christine.
Upon seeing this, Tony immediately said thank you, then tossed the trophy to Obadiah Stane before jogging to catch up with Adam and Christine.
"What happened?"
“Athena discovered a meteorite, um, about the size of New York City,” Adam quickly explained. “Christine and I will go over and analyze the situation. Don’t worry.”
Tony frowned after listening and said, "If you need any help, be sure to tell me. I remember the watchtower's weapon system isn't fully developed yet; I can be of assistance."
"Don't worry, I'll definitely let you know if I need any help," Adam said with a smile. "Sorry, I didn't expect you to dislike these kinds of gatherings so much, otherwise I wouldn't have invited you."
"Oh, it's nothing, it's just that they always use my name for publicity, which I find a bit annoying. Since you're all leaving, I'll leave too," Tony said with a smile. "By the way, remember to let me know if you hear anything. I've never heard of such a large meteorite before."
As they spoke, they reached the door. Adam nodded and said, "Understood. I'll leave you a video. Well, we should go!" After saying that, a pale blue light flashed, and Adam and Christine disappeared.
Tony stroked his chin and said, "This seems much better than Athena's teleportation platform. Should we try it again? Never mind, we'll see later." After muttering to himself, Tony woke up the bodyguard waiting at the door and left. His wonderful nightlife had only just begun.
A little over an hour passed. At this time, astronomical centers in other countries also discovered that a huge meteorite was approaching Earth. They had already held a meeting overnight to discuss how to solve the problem. However, before they could figure out how to solve the problem, a letter from the Justice League made them all breathe a sigh of relief.
"It seems he was telling the truth; the Watchtower did indeed play a very good role this time," US President George W. Bush remarked, looking at the Justice League's letter.
"Yes, we've only just discovered the meteorite here, and Superman and his team have already devised a strategy," the British Prime Minister nodded, adding, "But can they really succeed? After all, this meteorite is exceptionally large."
"Now that we've come this far, we have no choice but to trust them," the Chinese chairman said, looking at the letter in front of him. "However, we can't just stand by and do nothing. We need to make some preparations. There's an old saying in our country: 'Better safe than sorry!'"
Chapter 260 Contact with Meteorite
Inside the watchtower, in the hall known as the Hall of Justice, Professor X, several helpful mutants, and the Fantastic Four were all present. Of course, the Justice League members, except for the seriously injured Vanguard, were all there. >≥
"Thank you for coming. Because of the urgency of the situation, I won't stand on ceremony. You all already know why I've gathered you all here. This time, we've encountered a meteorite about the size of New York City. If such a meteorite were to hit Earth, it would cause the extinction of humanity," the man said solemnly.
Professor X, his expression grave, asked, "So what are we going to do now? Try to destroy that meteorite?"
Athena was also there. After hearing the question, she said, "That's right. We need to destroy or change the trajectory of the meteorite. We have about ten hours left."
Humanity said, “For this operation, we need a few people who can operate in space. The X-Men need Logan and Jean Grey’s help, and we have me and Athena. I think the four of us can hold them off. The rest of you keep an eye on the situation on the ground. Some media outlets have already broadcast news about the meteorite. When we’re not around, the safety on the ground is in the hands of the others. With Athena’s assistance, there shouldn’t be any problems.”
Professor X nodded and said, "We have no problem with the issue of the survival of all humanity."
Jean Grey and Logan nodded. Jean Grey's Phoenix Force had fully awakened. As for Wolverine, he had also undergone a mutation due to his union with Phoenix Man, and was now fully capable of surviving in space, although he couldn't fly. However, with Phoenix Man's help, this was not a problem at all. Moreover, the adamantium claws in her hands had been strengthened, and they might come in handy this time.
"What if you can't stop the meteor this time? And we don't even know its composition yet; we have to investigate thoroughly, otherwise the consequences will be unimaginable!" Dr. Reed of the Fantastic Four asked, frowning. "We need to think about a backup plan."
The man nodded and said, "Dr. Reed is right. That's why I called you here. Time is of the essence, and we can't afford to delay any longer. Let us go over there and try to change the meteorite's trajectory. You can stay here and analyze the meteorite's composition and such, so we can avoid more serious consequences."
Dr. Reed stroked his chin and said, "No problem. Susan, Miss Athena, and I will work on it. As for the others, they will stay with the X-Men for now. We can't let those lunatics cause trouble at this time!"
After discussing it for a while, the four of them—Man, Sun Goddess, Phoenix, and Wolverine—flew towards the distant meteorite. Meanwhile, the people in the watchtower continued to study the meteorite's data and the situation on the solid ground, ready to rush over immediately if any riots or similar incidents occurred to help the police resolve the trouble.
Of course, before this, Athena, representing the Justice League and several other organizations with special abilities, announced to the world that they would be carrying out an operation to intercept the meteorite. She also promised that the footage would be broadcast to every household's television set via satellite and that the truth would not be concealed. This announcement reassured most people. As for the few who were eager to cause trouble, the heroes and police would deal with them.
On the other side, the group flew quickly and took nearly half an hour to reach the vicinity of the huge meteorite. Looking at the rapidly moving meteorite, both the group and the others frowned.
“This is absolutely enormous,” Logan said, hand in hand with Phoenix Man, their bodies enveloped in phoenix fire, as they looked at the massive meteorite.
"I'll try to stop it from continuing to fly!" the person said, flying directly in front of the meteorite and stretching out his hands, ready to try to stop it.
With a loud bang, the person was sent flying by the meteorite, but was caught by the Sun Goddess in a flash. The person wiped the blood from the corner of their mouth, a hint of fear flashing in their eyes.
"It seems I've become a bit arrogant lately, forgetting the kinetic energy contained in a meteorite flying in a vacuum. It seems my strength isn't quite there yet," the man thought as he waved his hand to let the Sun Goddess release him, hovering in space.
"Are you alright?" the Sun Goddess asked with concern.
"It's alright. I underestimated this meteorite, and I was a bit reckless just now," the man said, staring at the meteorite.
"What do we do now?" Phoenix asked.
"Let's try to change the meteorite's trajectory. After all, we don't know what the meteorite is made of yet. Oh, Sun Goddess, take a sample of the meteorite and send it to the watchtower so they can start studying it!" the man said.
"Understood!"
The Sun Goddess nodded, flew to the meteorite, and painstakingly scraped off a small sample with her divine sword. She frowned as she looked at the meteorite at her feet, and a miniature magic circle flashed in her hand, teleporting the meteorite sample to the watchtower.
“Something’s not right with this meteorite; even the surface is unexpectedly hard,” the Sun Goddess said as she returned to their side.
The three people above all knew that the Sun Goddess's power was no less than that of humans, so they were very surprised to hear her words, feeling that the universe was so vast and full of wonders.
“Perhaps this meteorite is the raw material of Adamantium,” Logan said, extending his claws and clashing them together with a clang.
“Now let’s try to change the meteorite’s trajectory. Let’s try dragging it up from below. Maybe we can succeed,” Phoenix said.
“Until we can’t attack the meteorite directly, this is the only way. Let’s give it a try.” The man nodded in agreement with Phoenix’s suggestion.
The group arrived at the base of the massive meteorite, gripped it with both hands to steady themselves, and then used all their strength to lift it upwards. After struggling for a while, both the group and Phoenix Girl felt a bit tired.
"Athena, has the meteorite's trajectory changed? Calculate it immediately!" someone contacted Athena and inquired.
“Yes, Master, please wait a moment,” Athena replied immediately. “The meteorite’s trajectory has indeed changed somewhat, but it may still collide with Earth. Moreover, if it does not continue to rise in three hours, it may collide with the Moon! Furthermore, the meteorite’s trajectory is very strange. It is currently in a very dangerous position because no matter how many times you adjust it, it will always hit a planet, either Earth, Mars, or some other planet.”
"How could this be? Has everything we did before been for nothing?" The Sun Goddess sighed upon hearing this. "Athena, what's the result of the meteorite's composition analysis? Can we destroy it?"
“The meteorite’s composition is still being analyzed. Last year, there were many substances that are not found on Earth, and I don’t have the corresponding information in my database, so we need some time,” Athena said.
"Athena, calculate a feasible orbit immediately. And don't forget to calculate the planet's gravity. We don't want to destroy other planets to save Earth," the man instructed immediately after hearing Athena's words. After all, no one knew what negative impact the destruction of other planets would have on Earth.
“Yes, Master, I will calculate an orbit immediately and give you a hint, so that we will have some time to analyze the composition of the meteorite,” Athena replied immediately.
Upon hearing Athena's reply, the man said, "Let's rest for a bit and recover our strength. Then, based on the trajectory calculated by Athena, let's slowly wear down this meteorite. Hopefully, it doesn't contain any explosive material."
"I hope so. This meteorite is really insidious; it seems to exist to destroy the solar system," Logan shrugged.
“Perhaps we can check the meteorite for any clues. Maybe we can find something,” Jean Grey suddenly said. “I just saw something that looked like an altar in that direction.”
After hearing this, the man said, "Alright, let's go take a look!"
