“So I want to help,” Tony said again.
“Well, I think the best way to awaken our master is to find Christine, but according to Harry and me, Christine is most likely asleep in the sun.” Athena looked at Tony and said, “The problem now is how to bring Christine back to Earth.”
"Up on the sun?" Tony asked in surprise. Although he already knew Christine's identity, he still couldn't believe that she would be up on the sun. He frowned and said, "If she really is up on the sun, that would be terrible. There is currently no metal on Earth that can get close to the sun."
“Even if we had that kind of metal, it wouldn’t work, because with the current level of technology I have, it would take a very long time to build a simple spacecraft that could rescue Christine, not to mention the distance from Earth’s orbit to the sun.” Athena said calmly, “Therefore, we cannot use conventional methods to think about this. We must look for answers from humanity and the forces of nature, because we cannot wait that long. That room can hardly contain him anymore.”
"Natural forces? Do you have anyone in mind?" Tony asked.
“Jean Grey.” Athena stared at a series of data on the screen and said, “The only person I know who is willing to help us seems to be her. Unfortunately, her current situation is not good. Although there are alternative methods, I am not willing to use them.”
"why?"
"Because once I use it, my master will never forgive me, even if he knows I did it to save him. It's a life-for-life exchange."
"So now all we can do is wait?" Tony asked, somewhat puzzled.
“No, that’s not it. We need to make some preparations now,” Athena said. “I remember that before Master had his accident, he was building the Watchtower, which was an orbital space station with some Martian technology. It could perform space jumps. Because the device is not yet fully completed, we need to build a small firing platform. We need to activate the firing platform and the space jump machine at the same time to perform a space jump to the Watchtower.”
“I always feel like I’m living in a myth,” Tony Stark sighed. “So, is there anything I can do to help? Of course, you know I’m a well-known member of the Ming family.”
“I need energy. The reactor you built last year was excellent.” Athena’s eyes held a hint of admiration as she said, “To be able to build that Arc Reactor using only some fragments of data left by Mr. Howard, I must say you are a genius.”
"Haha, thanks for the compliment, but unfortunately I can't compare to you, brother." Tony smiled, then said somewhat sadly, "I've only recently come to understand the saying 'you only know what you've got when you lose it.' Hmm, with your help, perhaps I could build a small arc reactor here. I've been researching how to make that big thing a little smaller lately."
“As expected, you’re very clever. You can use the lab in the Dawn Building; my subroutines are there,” Athena said. “I’ll have them prepare the materials. Oh, and of course, we also have a few of those stupid robots you made; feel free to use them.”
"Didn't you upgrade them?" Tony took off his coat and threw it aside, looking at Athena and asking, "I've always hoped they could have the same intelligence as Jarvis, but unfortunately, maybe I've run out of intelligence, or maybe Jarvis's birth was just an accident. I can't increase their intelligence too much."
“Perhaps you are subconsciously afraid of the intelligence of robots.” Athena said nonchalantly, “When the master first created me, he also had this thought. Of course, this is what the master told me himself. At first, he only wanted to create a helper. Later, due to some accidents, my intelligence program began to improve continuously, even to the point that the master was afraid. However, in the end, the master still chose to trust me.”
"I can't believe it," Tony said, somewhat surprised. "That Adam, who was so smart and brave, was actually afraid."
"No matter what, he is still a person. He can get hurt, cry, feel sad, and feel happy. He just doesn't usually show it too much."
"As expected, the person who understands my brother best is still you, Athena."
“The lab is ready. You can go there and start building the arc reactor. Don’t worry, I’ve already told them not to bother you. The materials you just listed have been sent to the lab.” Athena interrupted Tony, saying, “I hope you can build it quickly if you really want him to recover.”
“You shouldn’t doubt me on this, Athena. I am Tony Stark, Adam Stark’s brother!” With that, Tony left.
Chapter 249 Launch Pad and Departure
"test·······"
"Ding, test started, first run begins..." The electronic voice promptly reported the situation.
"Great, all the data is normal. After a few more tests, OK, you can say I'm a genius. It seems I've broken my own record again."
With the help of a group of robots, Tony successfully optimized the Arc Reactor in just three days, creating a small energy source that met Athena's requirements.
Athena looked at Tony, who was wearing a white coat and was as happy as a child, and felt that this was the real Tony Stark. This feeling was very subtle. As an artificial intelligence, Athena had evolved countless times and undergone some mutations, but she still did not understand why she had this feeling.
"Alright, come with me. Let's install the equipment on top of the Dawn Building and build the launch pad." Athena's attitude towards Tony had changed slightly.
Tony was taken aback. He knew that Athena would usually make sarcastic remarks at this point, but she didn't today. It seemed that she had begun to forgive him. He smiled. This was a good thing. Although he had broken with Adam because of someone's interference with magic, he had to admit that he was very jealous of his brother at that time and wanted to surpass him in every way, which was why others took advantage of his weakness.
"Okay, I'm coming. Hey, wait a minute, you're not going to make me move this thing all by myself, are you?" Tony pointed to the Arc Reactor, which was about a meter high and half a meter in diameter, and said with some frustration.
“Of course, this is to save my master. I don’t trust other humans, not even the people in this company,” Athena said calmly.
"Okay, okay, but even though I've been working out to pick up girls, asking me to carry this Arc Reactor to the rooftop is asking too much. Besides, don't you have other robots that can help?" Tony's fleeting smugness vanished instantly. Sure enough, Athena is Athena. Without Adam's constraints, she acts entirely on her own whims.
"They're building a platform, and I'm not asking you to carry me all the way to the rooftop. There's an elevator right behind you that goes straight to the rooftop; you're just too dense to notice." With that, Athena let out a clear laugh and vanished.
Tony was speechless upon hearing this, but he knew Athena was playing a trick on him. Instead of being angry, he was somewhat pleased, which meant his earlier assumptions were correct. However, he glanced at the Arc Reactor and knew that even lifting it onto the elevator by himself would be a difficult task. He then looked around, hoping to find a solution.
"My forte is my intellect. Let me see... Hmm, this seems like it will work."
Tony glanced around and got to work. Using a few simple auxiliary robots in the lab, Tony quickly created a simple tool, started the Arc Reactor, connected it to the tool, and nodded with great satisfaction.
"I really am a genius."
"What are you dawdling for? Hurry up!" Just as Tony was admiring his masterpiece and feeling smug, Athena's voice came through the loudspeaker. Tony shrugged and pushed his makeshift lift into the elevator.
When Tony went up to the rooftop, he found Athena standing in front of a computer, testing data from the launch pad. The launch pad was a black platform, two meters high and five meters in diameter, with text and patterns that Tony couldn't understand engraved on it, and many cables connecting the platform to other equipment.
"Is this the launch pad?" Tony asked.
“That’s right. This is the launch pad that connects to the Watchtower. Once we get news from the Xavier’s Institute, we can use this to teleport directly to the Watchtower in geosynchronous orbit,” Athena explained.
"And then what? If any Jean Grey does manage to awaken, how long will it take to reach the sun?" Tony asked. "The equipment in that house doesn't seem to be lasting much longer. I went to check on it today, and it can already crack with a single punch."
“If Jean Grey can truly unearth the power that the Dark Phoenix left within her and combine it with her own Phoenix Force, then her speed will surpass the speed of light. Apart from finding Christine on the sun, which will take some time, the rest will not be a problem.” Athena continued, “However, as you just said, we don’t have much time to wait. If we don’t awaken Master’s main personality within 72 hours, we will lose him forever.”
Tony frowned and asked, "Any news from Xavier's School?"
“There’s good news and bad news.” Athena didn’t keep them in suspense and continued, “The good news is that Jean Grey seems to have begun to awaken. According to Professor X, the same energy as the Phoenix Force appeared in Jean Grey’s room last time. The bad news is that we don’t know how long this awakening will take.”
"So what should we do now? Just wait around?" Tony asked anxiously.
"We can only wait; there's no other way."
"In the end, all we can do is wait? This...?" Tony was at a loss for words and could only remain silent, watching Athena direct the robots to continue assembling the launch pad.
About three hours later, the launch pad was finally assembled. Athena activated the launch pad's power, and all the runes on the platform lit up with a blue light, indicating that the launch pad was ready.
"Shall we begin the test?" Tony asked.
“That’s right. Although the master has already conducted a test before, the technology used then was from a Martian civilization, which is different from mine. Because I don’t have the core details of Martian technology, I can only combine the power of technology and magic to create this launch pad. But I’m not sure about its safety, so I need to test it. Let’s send a robot for the first test.” After saying that, he placed a robot on the launch pad, in the area marked with a red circle.
“Wow, this is a memorable day. By the way, is there anything I can do for you?” Tony asked, looking at the red halo that was already flashing and starting to spin.
"Just shut up!" Athena had no time to listen to Tony's musings. She stared at the launch pad with a serious expression. After the energy transmission stabilized and the entire launch pad reached a strange balance, she pressed the red button on the computer.
A cylindrical beam of light flashed from the launch pad, and the robot that had been standing on it had vanished. Athena and Tony stared at the computer screen, waiting for the robot's response.
After some time, a message appeared on the computer from Chloe, the intelligent butler of the watchtower. Chloe was an intelligent butler created based on Athena, but because she was a subroutine, she only had the same intelligence as Jarvis. Of course, this was also due to the deliberate actions of Athena and Adam.
"Alright, the robots we just sent out are all functioning normally. Let's begin the next test," Athena said with a smile.
Tony was also very happy. He personally went over and took an iron cage containing a monkey, placing it on the launch pad and saying, "I hope everything goes well." After saying that, he returned to Athena's side.
Athena, seeing Tony return, resumed the testing. After several rounds of testing, Athena and Tony were overjoyed to confirm that the launch pad construction was a complete success. Just moments before, Tony Stark, disregarding Athena's advice, had personally tested it twice. The first time, he teleported from Earth to the Watchtower, and the second time, he successfully teleported from the Watchtower back to the ground. Aside from initial nausea and dizziness, there were no other side effects. Now, all they needed was news from the Xavier's School.
Professor X had cordoned off the area around Jean Grey's room at Xavier's House, knowing that the seemingly stable energy was actually filled with destructive power. He worried that the students or teachers might be in danger and had to be quarantined, while constantly praying for Jean Grey and Logan's safety.
"It's all Athena's fault. If she hadn't suddenly come, Jean wouldn't have gotten into this mess," Rogue, now a member of the X-Men, complained.
"Sigh, I really don't know if Jean and Logan are in any danger." Phantom Cat glanced at the "No Entry" sign and sighed.
"Don't worry, they'll be fine. You have to trust them," Iceman, Phantom Cat's boyfriend, put his arm around his girlfriend's shoulder and comforted her.
"What are you doing here?" Storm asked as she came down the stairs and saw the three people standing there.
“We’re very worried about Jean and Logan, Professor. Do you think something might have happened to them?” Phantom Cat asked.
Storm shook her head and said, "I don't know either. We can only wait until the energy shield over there disappears. Even Professor X's abilities can't see through that shield. It seems to be the same kind of power as the previous Dark Phoenix."
"Perhaps I can try to send it over?" Phantom Cat volunteered.
"No, you can't do that!" Storm exclaimed in alarm. "With your abilities, you can't even pass through a normal energy shield, let alone one filled with destructive energy like this. Go back, Jean and Logan will be fine."
Just then, a faint golden energy suddenly emanated from the black energy shield, wave after wave, seemingly trying to break through the black energy shield. Each impact caused the entire building to shake violently.
"What's going on?" Little Rascal asked.
“It’s possible that Jean and Logan are about to come out. Perhaps, if we can break through this black energy shield, they can come back. Should we attack it from the outside?” Iceman said, frowning.
P.S.: Thank you so much for the generous donation and monthly tickets! I'm so touched! I'm adding an extra chapter for you today!
Chapter 250 Christine is back
"No, you don't need to do anything now, just leave this building." Professor X's voice appeared in everyone's minds. He said, "This situation seems to be what Miss Athena was talking about, awakening. Now all we need to do is wait for the harp to break through."
After hearing this, Phantom Cat asked, "Like a butterfly?"
Professor X smiled kindly and said, "That's right. Jean had some problems before and completely closed herself off. Although we don't know how Logan untied her knot, that's no longer important. What's important is that Jean is about to be reborn."
"Alright, children, let's go outside and wait. We're not sure if anything unexpected will happen when Jean and Logan emerge from their cocoons. Professor, what do you think?"
Everyone had left the dormitory building, and the students gathered on the lawn. Apart from most of the teachers who were responsible for looking after the children, the rest of the X-Men stood not far from the dormitory building, nervously waiting for Jean Grey and Logan to appear.
In Jean Grey's room, the black energy shield was completely covered by golden energy, which gradually devoured the black energy. After about half an hour, only golden energy remained in the room, and there was no trace of black energy left.
A clear bird song rang out from the golden energy shield, followed by six golden claws that suddenly emerged from within, drawing an X shape on the shield and tearing it open. Jean Grey, now fully restored to her former appearance, and Logan, the shirtless Wolverine, stepped out.
"That was a really good night's sleep." Jean Grey smiled and looked at Logan. "Thank you for staying with me. Otherwise, I really wouldn't know how I could have fought against the Dark Phoenix."
Logan looked at Jean Grey and said, "Although I was startled by you at first, we've become inseparable over the years, so there's no need to thank me."
Logan's tone, besides conveying his love for Jean Grey, also revealed a sense of vicissitude, as if he had been through a lot with Jean Grey.
"It seems the professor is waiting for us," Jean Grey said, glancing outside.
"It seems like only three days have passed outside, which is really eerie. I'd heard before that Adam's consciousness was living in an endless cycle deep within his mind, but I didn't think much of it then. Now that I've experienced it firsthand, I realize how terrifying that is," Logan remarked, glancing at the time and date on the wall.
“Oh, right, Athena seemed to want me to help her after I awaken. Maybe we can meet with the professor and then go over. She seemed quite anxious at the time,” Jean Grey said. She took a black top from the closet and said, “This is what Scott wore before. I don’t have time to buy you a new one right now, so I’ll alter it for you.”
After finishing her sentence, Jean Grey used her powers to transform her previous black top into a leather jacket that suited Logan's taste, and handed it to him, gesturing for him to put it on. Judging from her tone, she seemed completely unconcerned about Cyclops Scott's appearance. Logan didn't say anything, simply smiling as he put on the jacket and walked out of the room with Jean Grey.
Outside the room, Professor X and the others had been waiting for Jean Grey and Logan. When they saw the black light turn golden and then disappear, they eagerly asked about what had happened inside.
Professor X shook his head, but his tone revealed a hint of excitement as he said, "I'm sorry, I can't check the situation inside right now, but it seems that Jean has fully awakened this time, becoming the first mutant on Earth in modern times to advance to the Omega level."
Storm breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing this and said, "She succeeded?"
Professor X nodded. "That's right, she succeeded!"
Just then, Jean Grey and Logan, both wearing burgundy trench coats, walked out from inside.
Logan pulled a cigar from his pocket and put it in his mouth. One end of the cigar suddenly turned bright red, indicating it was lit. He took a deep drag and said, "Is this a welcoming ceremony for us? I'm truly flattered."
Jean Grey gave him a reproachful glare, then walked up to Professor X, looking at the kind old man. She said softly, "Professor, I'm back. I'm sorry I disappointed you before."
Professor X's eyes reddened upon hearing this, but he quickly regained his composure, took a deep breath, and said, "Welcome back, Jean. It's so good to see you like this again. There's no need for apologies. As long as you're alright, everything will be alright."
Qin had always treated Professor X like her father, so hearing him say that made her very touched and ashamed. She felt that she had always disappointed him, but she didn't expect that Professor X would not blame her.
Storm looked at Jean Grey, then at Logan with a strange expression, and asked softly, "Jean, what's your relationship with Logan...?"
Jean Grey smiled and said, "Just as you thought, I was able to come back this time thanks to him being by my side the whole time. Otherwise, I might have been devoured by the Phoenix Force."
Storm's expression changed slightly upon hearing this, but she quickly composed herself and said with a faint smile, "Congratulations on finding your happiness."
"Thank you. I believe you can find it too, as long as you can overcome your weaknesses."
